  • For AHA interview apply by : 22 Nov. 2013
    • intend to inteview at the AHA & bring finalists to campus in February
  • It looks like they hired a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow (2013-'15) to teach this course just last year. Pure speculation, but is this search potentially a public posting for (what will turn out to be) an inside hire? (Seen this before and becoming rather jaded...) (11/15)
  • Could be. But who knows? There were several jobs advertised last year where there was a PD/VAP or someone nearby who looked like the perfect fit, like the description had been written for a particular candidate, and that person was not hired, for whatever reasons. Maybe the PD at Colby wants to leave. who knows?
  • Yeah, of course you're right. I'm just getting increasingly skeptical about the whole process after wasting a lot of time and energy on applying & interviewing for a job last year that was for an internal candidate all along...
  • Fair enough. Cold comfort, to be sure, but the committee also had to do tons of work just to hire an internal candidate. Of course, committee members all have jobs.
  • I'm certain that this is not an inside hire, although the current Mellon Fellow will be applying for the position as well, and is likely to make the short list.  (11/20)
  • Appreciate the inside input, thanks. (11/22)
  • Aren't they cutting it a bit close to interview at AHA?
  • AHA Interview scheduled by email, 12/11
  • Any word from them after the AHA? (19 Jan)

Hope College (MI)[]

  • Tenure track Assistant Professorship in World History, to begin Aug. 2014
  • "Hope College is a liberal arts undergraduate college affiliated with the Reformed Church in America with an ecumenical vision of offering an education in the context of the historic Christian faith."
  • Teaching Load: 3/3 " Qualified applicants should be enthusiastic about undergraduate teaching and should be prepared to teach upper-level courses in African history and other global area(s), as well as general education courses in world history before and after 1500"

Candidate’s  letter and transcript should indicate what graduate training, research, or courses taught have prepared them to teach courses in African history. Submit materials to www.hope.edu/employment"
  • Deadline: 15 Oct. 2013
  • Intend to interview at the African Studies Association conference, and/or by Skype
  • On 10/17, received the following email: "We would like to pursue your candidacy further. To that end we invite you to submit the following: 1) Three letters of reference; 2) Official transcripts from any post-baccalaureate institution you attended; 3)  A personal statement of 1-2 pages in response to the attached document “Mission of Hope College” and “Qualities Hope College Seeks in its Faculty.” (x2)
  • Following this up with another point... Hope appears, in parts of their website and mission statement, to downplay/marginalize their religious affiliation. For example, there is one point devoted to "the historic Christian faith" in the college's faculty mission statement; many more points are given to standard Liberal Arts College practices and expectations (teaching, pedagogy, student mentoring, research, etc.). Does religion take a back or front seat at the college, or is it fluid? I'm left with really mixed messages when I puruse their website. Ideas?
  • I know some departments at the college take their religious affiliation *extremely* seriously.  Can't say for sure about the history department, though.
  • Received rejection in mail, dated 10/17.  Fastest turnaround ever, although language not extraordinariy kind.
  • Invitation for ASA/Skype interview (11/1).
  • If religion (Christianity) is not important to you HOPE COLLEGE is not the right place to be.
  • Does anybody know the status for this search? Have campus invites been issued? (12/13) Yes
  • Have heard nothing. Said they had a new dean and might take time to get campus visits approved. Expecting that someone will hear before Xmas for Jan visit.

  • Deadline: 1 Oct. 2013.
  • Any news?
  • Not yet (x6)
  • Received over 300 applications... heard from VERY reliable source that, in order to triage massive quantity of application, they will only be looking at candicates from US/UK Ivy League schools. So much for publish or perish...
  • That's one way to do it. They also coulda just thrown out every other one.
  • Not VERY reliable. There are no UK Ivy League schools.
  • Cambridge? Oxford? LSE? Equivalent to US Ivy League, I would say.
  • Some sort of filtering took place in getting this message from the committee to this website. Surely Stanford, Duke, Northwestern and Toronto would get looked at.
  • Also, this job surely has many applicants who already have TT jobs at lower-tiered institutions. One would expect that publication records would count for more than PhD locations in those cases.
  • This also seems unlikely given the obligation of Canadian universities to give priority to Canadian citizens when hiring for academic jobs. Of course, in reality, this is something of a meaningless rule. But it is a rule nonetheless, and I doubt UBC would flout it so brazenly. Also, never in my life have I ever heard anyone who works at a university, in Canada or the US, say "UK Ivy League."
  • Above info about PhD selection is, like most wild rumors on wiki, wrong except for 300+ applicants. 15 shortlisted, no conference interviews.
  • Request for more info (11/19, x3)
  • Any movement on this since?
  • Not here, but the additional materials were not due until 11/30, right?
  • Extra materials were due 30 November. From the email: " I hope to be able to update you with news by the end of December."
  • What additional material did they ask for, they already asked for everything up-front!
  • They took my book manuscript, additional syllabi, and asked for a 1-2 page statement on the state of International History. They'll certainly have plenty of material to sort through.
  • They made you write a special mini-lit review just for them!? Soon enough search committees will be demanding custom-tailored articles on topics they choose. (And then of course they will lament all the more how they are buried in paper, so they will have to rely all the more on signaling devices like quality of PhD institution.)
  • What crap. The search committee is punishing applicants for its own inability to decide what it wants.
  • lemme guess. you weren't invited?
  • 339 applicants!!! rejection (12/9 x3)
  • Unusually thoughtful rejection email. Much appreciated.
  • Agreed. "You belong to a cohort of highly accomplished historians, and my colleagues and I have nothing but admiration for the depth and variety of research that now dominates international history and related fields."
  • Well, the above quote was confidential
  • Right. for the eyes of the 320-odd applicants who received it.
  • Anybody hear anything positive? (12/10)
  • Very polite email rejection, 12/11 (x2)
  • Any new movement? (12/16)
  • I know someone who has an interview this week with them! (1/13) x2
  • Any updates? Offers?
  • This is the funniest wiki job site discussion. If there was an award it would surely win. Hats off to the participants! Disclaimer: I don't specialize in this area nor did I apply for this job. Just your friendly neighborhood spammer :)
  • Moved on to second round of on-campus finalists. Visits over next few weeks (3/27)
  • Did this fail? I don't see any sign of a new hire...

  • The deadline for applications is January 31, 2014.
  •  It's hard to know whether this is worth applying for without salary numbers. 45000 dollars a year makes a bad life with a family in NY. Does anyone know what the salary has been in the past?
  • presumably youre not sustaining a family on a single stipend? If your partner works and you're willing to live somewhere other than the village, it's doable, especially if your kid's in public school. It wouldn't be glorious, but by no means "bad"
  • Has anyone heard news recently about this position? 3/10 No word? 3/24

"
  • Deadline: 1 Nov. 2013
  • Intend to interview at the AHA
  • Any news/info?
  • Nothing. But, I gues it is a little early, if they intend to inerview at the AHA.
  • Someone MUST have heard something by now, no?
  • 12/9: anyone hear anything?
  • Still nothing as far as I know. Honestly, I imagine by now they've already set up interviews, and the selected applicants have simply not updated this page. AHA is only 3 weeks away. 12/10
  • Email request for AHA interview (12/16).
  • Request for campus interview [2/3]
  • 4/4 teaching load is a death knell for research. I feel sad for the person who gets stuck with this terrible load.
  • That depends on how many preps are required.  Hey, in this market?  A job is a job.  Good luck to the finalists (not one myself).
  • This is a liberal arts school with small class sizes. Has this job been filled yet?
  • hate to break it to you--but small classes are as much if not more work than big classes. Big classes usually comes with TA's for grading. Small liberal arts colleges are founded on the principle of hand-holding. I know I have taught in them and I have taught 4/4. If you can pull off 4 classes twice a week you can gain time for research. I have done that too: 4 a day. It's a killer but it gives time off for research. Double classes with same prep definitely helps. But then as the person above said: a job is better than no job. Good luck & negotiate the number of preps at the outset if possible
  • Add'l campus interview(s) being held this month. 3/10
