Specific research interests are open, but should complement existing course offerings in twentieth-century U.S. history and the history of Sub-Saharan Africa. This is a one-year, full-time position, with potential for longer-term renewal.

  • Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2011, and reviewed as they are received. Hiring will be carried out on a rolling basis. Please send a letter of interest, current CV, statement of teaching philosophy, and names and contact information of three references by email only to hr11029@bard.edu. • Finalists invited to campus, 11/3
    • oh.my.god.neverconfirmedreceiptofmaterials... (x3)
    • I have applied for jobs here and World Hist postdoc in previous years, and this failure to send ack, followed by spamming the unsuccessful candidates with info about their World Hist seminar (and request to join their "research registry") is typical. As is a failure to use bcc, effectively revealing all the candidates names.
    • Don't they learn from their unprofessional gaffes?
    • They'll be sorry. Next year I won't spend countless hours working on an application for them to ignore...there!
    • NO, think only of yourself, save yourself, why should you care a whit about them? they (or any other university) dont even think one nanosecond about us.
    • Same for me- no response at all but was stuck on their mailing list- quite an elaborate self-promotion strategy for their world history center
    • Got rejection e-mail. (11/16) (x1) "We regret to inform you..."
    • Funny, not even a "We regret to imform you...." or a receipt of materials. But hey, I got the world history seminar email!! (x2)
    • Rejection email 11/17, no acknowledgment and won't be attending online seminar!
    • No ack + no rejection + a second world history seminar email = priceless (11/25)
    • Rejection by e-mail. I wonder if it's worth e-mailing the Department with some of the comments above? Probably not; I'm sure they're happy to have publicity for the World History Seminar.
    • What would be effective is if someone wrote to the Chronicle..
    • offer has been made.
    • ABD or Ph.D.? What geographical focus?

Stonehill College

  • Tenured track Assistant Professor of Islamic History/World History position to begin in August 2012. The area of specialty is open, but the candidate must be able to teach the history of the broader Islamic World as well as World History survey courses, upper division courses in candidate's area of specialty and on transnational global themes. Annual teaching load is 3-3 and strong preference will be given to candidates who have graduate training in World History and/or teaching World History.
  • Applications will be reviewed until October 14, 2011. Finalists will be brought to campus after a first round of interviews at the Annual Meeting of the AHA in January 2012.
    • Is this the same position that was advertised last year?
    • Sure looks the same! I wonder what happened.
    • Difficult to know unless a previous candidate posts. Apply anyway. Sounds like a good school.
  • Received e-mail scheduling AHA interview x 4 [posted 11/14]
  • Received rejection email (11/17) (x3)
    • Received a second (identical) rejection email (11/30) - twist the knife in me a little more Stonehill!
    • They should be under the Universities to Fear. Chair fell asleep during my AHA interview and I got the impression that there isn't a strong sense of community there. Heard other horror stories as well. Could be wrong, but
  • This is Kevin Spicer, chair of Stonehill's History Department's search. I am aware that one candidate did receive a second identical rejection email. This was an unfortunate clerical error for which we apologize. We as a department have a very strong sense of community. In addition, we take all our interviews at the AHA quite seriously and are looking forward to our conversations in Chicago.
    • I am the 2x rejectee mentioned above. I am sorry if my attempt at humor cut too deep. I honestly didn't care that my application was rejected once or even twice. In this job market, I would have went insane long ago if I took rejections to heart. That said, I do not know what to make of your apology, Dr. Spicer. Until reading your post, I found my 2x rejection something to laugh about. Now I'm a little perturbed. You seem to have the time to come on this wiki, read through all the posts, and then type a defense of your search and offer me an apology, but you do not have the time to send me a quick email saying, "whoops, we are really sorry for the mistake"? I just happened to be scrolling down on this page and your post caught my eye. Otherwise, I would never have learned that you were aware of my second identical rejection email. I know you are busy, not just with this job search but with your other responsibilities. However, we, the applicants, are also busy and have our own responsibilities (job, school, family, etc.). We spend a lot of time (which we don't have) on and put much effort into our applications, and many of us have to cut into our ramen budgets in order to send SCs our letters of recommendation and/or other application materials. Our livelihoods, nay, our futures are at stake here. I think all many of us want is just a little courtesy from SCs, regardless of how our candidacy for a job plays out. I must say, however, that at least this year my rejection email from Stonehill was addressed to me by name. Last year the rejection didn't even have a salutation (not even a Dear Applicant), so that's an improvement. I am sure you take your interviews at the AHA quite seriously, and I wish you the best in your search. I also wish all those who received an interview the best of luck in Chicago.
    • very odd very odd indeed (! x 2)
    • Campus visit scheduled
