  • Anything new?
  • [23 Jan]: Request for letters
  • ^^ They requested letters back in mid-December. Literally every applicant had their references asked for letters.
  • ^^ ^^ I second this.  WNEU requested all letters back in early-mid November for me shortly after I submitted my application.  Whoever posted the Jan 23 comment either commented on the wrong job listing here or submitted their application very recently, thereby triggering the HR page to request letters...  ugh, to think that all applicants have a PhD.
  •  To be fair to whoever posted the [23 Jan] update--for the record, not me--they were responding to the "anything new?" post, and promptly provided (on Jan. 23) their most recent news, which is the point of this Wiki: to shine a little light on the dehumanizing experience of applying for these jobs, and to make us feel slightly nauseated every time we click "reload."  There's no reason to assume incompetence on the part of the poster.
  • "How dare PhD holders have their documents requested at different times? This is an outrage!" For the record, my letters were requested in early January after submission in mid-December, so I was not at all surprised to find [23 Jan] on the page.
  • 4 Feb.: Update from Department Chair: "After carefully reading the comments on the 'Academic Jobs Wiki' page related to our opening in 'circum-Mediterranean world to 1500,' we have decided to cancel our search. In the judgment of the search committee, these posts by junior medievalists criticizing their colleagues about the dates on which they received our requests for letters indicate that many medievalists are jerks. From our experience, we prefer not to have jerks for colleagues. This position was for a 4-4 teaching load. That means we would need to interact with a potential jerk at least eight times each week. This was not something that we wished to pursue. We wish you the very best in your search for a department that is looking for a jerk."
  • ...This is getting ridiculous.  Whoever the troll is that keep re-posting the same stupid shit here needs to stop.  This forum is here for meaningful information and is not intended to be a conduit for your faux-angst and lame attempts at humor.
  • I agree.  We all are on edge given the abysmal amount of job postings, but the last thing that we need is to attack one another and lose any sense of humanity and decency.  I'm glad to see that someone re-deleted the unfunny and tasteless posts of someone who is angry and not capable of dealing with their frustrations in a mature and adequate manner.
  • Disagree. This started with a couple of people attacking someone for posting a good-faith update. Give it a break. Stop deleting some comments while keeping other criticisms (and now profanity). It is immature. Give free speech a chance. Maybe try to toughen up and/or ligten up.
  • MOD NOTE: For discusions that go beyond content immediately relevant to the posting there is an associated Talk Page. While we do not have a blanket ban on 'profanity', please check that your postings are in line with the T&C of the wiki. Any further discussion here will be moved to the Talk Page. Thanks for your cooperation AFII (talk) 10:01, February 7, 2020 (UTC)
