  • Up to three Visiting Assistant Professorships, beginning September 2017. Appointments are renewable pending successful annual reviews for a maximum term of three years
  • Visiting faculty will typically teach a year-long Core course, “Globalization I and II,” focusing on Early Modern and Modern history from a global perspective and covering the period c. 1500 to the present.   • The University of Cologne is looking for a candidate with a distinguished international record of scholarly publications and research in 19th and 20th century international history and/or historical peace and conflict studies.   • The Associate Professor will engage in advanced research using primary sources in the Arabic language in any field of the history of Muslim societies before 1500CE and will publish the findings of that research in international journals and academic presses, as well as seeking opportunities for collaborative and externally funded research projects.  She/he will develop Islamic history in Oxford through conferences, workshops and seminars.  She/he will give lectures, classes, and tutorial (small group) teaching, co-ordinating (with colleagues) the undergraduate degree courses in Arabic and contributing to the teaching of pre-modern Islamic history for other undergraduate and graduate courses.  The Associate Professor will supervise undergraduate and graduate dissertations, and Master’s and research students, and may also serve as an examiner for relevant degrees.  There will also be a requirement to participate in the administration of the Faculty, and of the College.

He or she will also be expected to be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students and to participate in academic self-governance.
  • Applicants should be able to cover the entire field of Ancient History on an international level. One field of expertise should be the history of transcultural entanglements between the societies of the Mediterranean in Antiquity, their characteristics and their embeddedness within the Mediterranean Region and beyond. Particular emphasis should be placed on transcultural entanglements between this ancient cultural space and its environment. A focus should also be placed on researching such phenomena of society which developed in Antiquity and were determining factors for the history of Europe and its cultures, such as the analysis of complex political systems and participatory violence communities.
  • A reputation for research both in a national and an international context is essential, as is the number of publications and a proven track record as an active contributor to collaborative research projects. Candidates should be both willing and able to work within an international and interdisciplinary context. The successful applicant will have demonstrated the ability to work with colleagues to develop new perspectives and projects for larger research groups and to bring in the necessary third party funding.
  • The future post-holder will be expected to be willing and able to collaborate with the Centre for Mediterranean Studies in cooperation with colleagues from fields such as archaeology and theology. A high commitment to teaching is also an essential.

  • The fellowship is intended to provide a structured development opportunity for exceptional candidates embarking on an academic career. The fellow will receive mentoring from the History fellows in Balliol, and will be offered a carefully tailored package of professional development. This is a full-time, fixed-term post for the period of 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2021
  • The area of the post is Modern Global History, understood as the history of the non-western world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This includes the history of East and South Asia, as well as sub-Saharan Africa. We do not expect to make an appointment in Ottoman, Middle Eastern, North African, or South-East Asian History.
  • The fellow will teach undergraduate students and provide administration for the college, including assessing and interviewing for the annual admissions exercises. The fellow will also engage in research, leading to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Candidates should normally have obtained a PhD or equivalent by 1 October 2017, and should not normally have completed a PhD or equivalent earlier than 1 October 2012 (with the exception of career breaks, e.g. for maternity/paternity leave).
