  • This might be the same as with Pomona where they are waiting for letters to come in. I would email so you don't waste your time if that's the case.
  • I wondered that too, until I remembered they didn't ask for letters in the first round.
  • From the ad - "Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but applications received before October 5, 2018 will be given full consideration." There is a glitch with the posting so it looks like the deadline is November 5 - Interfolio is intended to be open until the position is filled.
  • Interfolio ad now says due December 5...
  • Any updates? Not yet (10/16) Me neither (10/18) No (10/22), but I assume it takes 3-4 weeks from 10/5 deadline?
  • (10/23) NWSA interview request x2
  • Are campus invites out yet?
  • (11/16) Campus visit request
  • [13 Dec.] Rejection. Email says that they got "close to 400" applications (!) (x3)

  • Friends! Kyla Wazana Tompkins here. I am a member of the search committee but not the chair of the committee.  Please note that Pomona provides some helpful information about how to craft a diversity statement on our website: https://www.pomona.edu/administration/academic-dean/faculty-jobs/how-prepare-diversity-statement
  • Where we are legally able to we will periodically check in here and update people on the status of the search. We know this is a hard and taxing process and send you our warmest wishes, our support and want you to know we are eager to read your materials.
  • When I click the link to Academic Jobs online, there's a message in red text that the opening is closed and no longer accepting applications. Is that an error? -> They originally misclassified the link under "Art History" on Academic Jobs Online and have since made a new one: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/11485 (I have updated this above, too).
  • Any idea when invitations will go out for phone interviews and NWSA interviews? --> Hi, Kyla Wazana Tompkins here, search committee member but not chair. We are reading files now and don't have a precise deadline for invitations yet. Our goal is to leave a reasonable amount of time for people to book tickets, if they want to go to Atlanta. We are also doing skype interviews, as the ad states. So many wonderful projects! It's a real honor to read your work, candidates.
  • Any new updates? None yet (10/16)
  • UPDATE: Dear candidates. Kyla Wazana Tompkins here. At this point we have moved to scheduling skype and NWSA interviews. This does mean that we have formally moved to a long short list, however according to college policy all applications will remain live for now, and therefore we won't send out formal letters until the end of the search. Please know that we read your *entire* applications carefully and in detail. Many many applications were cut largely because of interdisciplinary overlap with current professors, and others because the fields simply didn't fit our curricular needs. I wish we had jobs for all of you, I really do, we would be the luckiest department in the world. For those of you not currently in TT jobs, please also note that the deadline for the Chau-Mellon fellowship is now up at AJO and the deadline is November 16th. Please see the link here: <https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/11893>. We wish you the very very best. Your projects are important and crucial in this moment. [posted 10/20/18]
  • For addressing our cover letters correctly, does anyone know who the chair of the search committee is? Thank you!
  • Aimee Bahng here (also a member of the search committee): Please address cover letters to Zayn Kassam, current chair of GWS at Pomona. -- thank you!
  • Is this job still accepting applications? The listing states that applications were due by Aug 31st, but Academic Jobs Online lists the deadline as Sep 14th and is still accepting new submissions. Thanks for clearing this up!
  • ????is this position still accepting applications? The online application says 9/21 ???? --> Kyla Wazana Tompkins here. So sorry for this confusion. We had to extend the deadline on AJO software to let late letters come in but the first deadline of August 31 did stand. I apologize that it took us too long to respond to this question.

  • ^^ thanks so much for asking!! do you think that means finalists won't HEAR until february, or will they hear the end of this week?  thanks!
  • ^^ Based on what I was told, I would guess that finalists will hear in early February as it will likely take at least this week for the committee's recommendations to make their way up the chain and be approved by all parties. But that's just an informed guess based on my own experiences with such things at my current institution (though, maybe things move more quickly at Siena). • Any word?
  • Nothing here [1/6/19]
  • Skype interview request via email (x3) [1/18]
  • Any word on campus visits?
  • Not yet. Did anyone get a timeline for decisions?
    • I was asked to do the Skype on 1/11 and the interview was held on 1/18. In the initial email it said "We would hopefully schedule campus visits in early February" but I have not heard anything since 1/18. (x2) [1/29]
    • Thank you!
  • Anyone hear anything? I asked for an update from the search chair but received no response [2/5]
  • No news over here yet. Thank you for asking--let us know if you get a response. [2/6]
  • Checking for updates (2/11)
    • Nothing on my end (I'm the one from above who asked the chair for an update on  2/5 and then posted here). I can't decide if they are just slow or if the people who got the on-campus don't read the Wiki or just aren't sharing here. :)
    • Thank you, OP! Either way, it's been a week since you wrote the chair so I'm surprised at the silence (2/12)
    • Thank you OP! I would also like to confirm I have not heard anything. Based on the time between when the applications were due and when they contacted people for Skype interviews, I hypothesize that they might be slow. (2/12) Also, best wishes to everyone :)
  • As someone with knowledge of the committee, campus visits have been scheduled. It was a very strong application pool and final decisions came down to fit, not quality of the candidates. (2/12)
    • Thank you for the update, and for your kind words about the quality of the candidates. As one of the shortlisted folks who wasn't asked for a campus visit, it definitely helps to hear that it's about fit and not something actually under my control. (2/14)

University of California Santa Cruz (CA) - Assoc/Full Prof - Feminist Studies and Africana Studies[]

The Feminist Studies Department [1] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the tenured Associate Professor or early stage Full Professor position in Africana Feminist Studies. We seek a scholar with a demonstrated track record of creativity and excellence in problem- and question-driven scholarship on Africa and/or the African Diaspora, capaciously construed, who would contribute to the Department's undergraduate major and Ph.D. program.

Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz is an interdisciplinary department that, while located in the Humanities Division, nevertheless embraces methodologically-reflexive and epistemologically-attentive approaches to thinking that seek both to destabilize and to trace the construction of traditionally-wrought distinctions between the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences. We welcome candidates who would complement or deepen department strengths in intellectual and disciplinary history, postcolonial and poststructuralist engagements with language and power, critical area studies, transnational cultural studies, and feminist science and technology studies, as well as candidates who might push departmental forms of expertise with new directions and challenges. Collaborations of heterodox approaches to interdisciplinary scholarship receive support from the Department's strong and longstanding relationships with the Center for Cultural Studies, the emerging Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Program, and the Science and Justice Research Center.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research, teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, and service to the department. This position carries a five-course equivalency workload, which normally means teaching four courses over three quarters and carrying other academic and service responsibilities.

We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minorities who are underrepresented in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Candidates will be considered in three categories: (1) Four of the fellowships will be awarded to early-career scholars employed in the equivalent of tenure-track positions who are expected to return to their position. (2) One fellowship is set aside for a postdoctoral research associate who at the time of application does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment. (3) In addition, one fellowship will be awarded to a senior scholar. All candidates must be based outside the United States.
  • During the academic year 2019-20, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Thinking Globally.” How people have thought about the planet has informed the institutions, norms, and policies that have pulled it together and torn it apart. For centuries, ideas of free trade, human rights or global governance have framed cooperation and competition, order and disorder. Such ideas have also spawned border-crossing movements, from campaigns to end slavery to commitments to reduce carbon emissions. In turn, global thinking and action have often reinforced commitments to national ideas and efforts to curb global exchange. The goal of this research theme is to explore how ideas framed the understanding of interests and the making of institutions that have yielded commonness and conflict across and within borders. We also want to understand how these ideas and practices came into being through scientific networks, foundations, and think tanks. The Program will also examine rival world ideas that have challenged prevailing orthodoxies. Nowadays, with cooperative norms under challenge, global institutions under stress, and a century of guiding ideas about global convergence in doubt, we want to take a broad look at where these ideas came from, their effects, and the prospects for intellectual renewal or rethinking. The goal of the 2019-20 Fung Global Fellows cohort will be to explore the ways people learned to rely on or to reject strangers far away, as well as to imagine how global relationships came to be and could be different. We welcome applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields from the sciences to the humanities whose work addresses this set of themes in any historical period or world region.
  • All candidates must reside outside the United States. To be eligible, postdoctoral applicants must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. before August 1, 2019 but cannot have received their degrees more than three years prior to the start of the appointment on September 1, 2019. Early-career fellows must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent no earlier than September 1, 2009. Senior scholars, who have received their doctorates before 2009, must have faculty appointments and a record of scholarly accomplishment in the designated theme of the program. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate’s proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program theme, the candidate’s scholarly record, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.
