Beloit College (USA: WI) - TT Assistant Professor - Critical Identity Studies - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

  • Beloit College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Critical Identity Studies (CRIS).
  • This position is part of the ACM-CIC Faculty Fellows Program for a Diverse Professoriate funded by the Mellon Foundation; candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education and with doctoral degrees from “Big Ten” institutions are especially encouraged to apply.
  • The successful candidate will hold a recent doctoral degree grounded in interdisciplinary, identity-based scholarship (such as ethnic studies, gender studies, or disability studies); have demonstrated abilities in teaching and/or mentoring diverse (by way of race, socio-economics, disability, and/or first-generation status) students; have a skill set for the development of collaborative partnerships and impactful programming for students, faculty, and staff related to social identities at the College.
  • This full-time, tenure-track position starts August 2016 with a teaching load of four courses per year (4/5ths time) and responsibility for developing collaborative leadership and programming for students, faculty, and staff around issues of social identities at the College (1/5th time).
  • Teaching duties will include one introductory CRIS course per semester along with a rotation of advanced theory, topics, and all-college courses that align with the candidate’s research, programming, and pedagogical interests.
  • We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching interests address race and embodiment as it applies to the College’s residential living and learning environment.
  • Applicants should send a single PDF or Word document that includes a letter of interest, curriculum vitae with names of references, and a statement of teaching philosophy and/or relevant syllabi to cris@beloit.edu. Preliminary interviews will be scheduled during NWSA in Milwaukee, November 13-15 for completed applications submitted by November 6th.  Final application deadline: December 1, 2015.
  • Does anyone know if it is even worth applying to this job now that NWSA is over? Why hold prelim interviews there but have a Dec 1 deadline? <-- I'd guess that the deadline is 12/01 because the position was only posted with 10 days or so to send in materials for NWSA interviews; presumably they're doing phone or Skype interviews for applicants who apply after that date. The search committee struck me as authentic people who mean what they say. I'd be willing to bet money that it really is open till 12/01.
  • Had an interview at NWSA [posted 11/18]. I also received the same email mentioned below but I had already gone through the first round of interview at NWSA. So I am bit confused! Did anybody submit Reference letter? I remember they just asked for names of referees but my referees did not receive any request for reference letter.
  • 12/2: Received an email from the search chair with a tentative timeline (phone interviews late January, campus visits late February into March).  I applied before the NWSA deadline, but didn't have a conference interview (x4)
  • 12/4: NWSA-interviewed candidates were confirmed that the conference interviews were prelim interviews.
  • 1/22: Phone interview scheduled (x2)
  • Did any of the NWSA-interviewed candidates hear anything? (Yes, I was interviewed at NWSA and have a phone interview scheduled.)
  • 02/02: Rejection email - campus interviews scheduled (x4). I thought this email was exceptionally kind... (x3)
  • 03/31: Has anyone heard if an offer made and accepted?
  • 04/12: An offer was accepted.
  • 4/22: KINDEST. REJECTION. LETTER. EVER.

Bowdoin College (USA:ME) - TT Asst. Professor - Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies - SKYPE INTERVIEW STAGE[]

  • The Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Program at Bowdoin College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of assistant professor in the field of sexuality studies, to begin in July, 2016.
  • Ph.D. expected at the time of appointment.
  • Under exceptional circumstances a tenured appointment may be considered.
  • We seek a scholar working at the intersections of gender and sexuality and especially welcome applications from those working in one of our three key areas of interest: critical sexuality studies, sexuality in national/transnational contexts, and intersectionality/critical race theory. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work overlaps with traditional social science fields.
  • The teaching load is two courses per semester, including courses in the candidate’s area of specialization and contributions to the program’s rotation of core courses.
  • Please visit https://careers.bowdoin.edu to submit letter of application describing your scholarly interests and teaching experience/philosophy, curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation upon request.
  • Review of applications begins October 30, 2015, and will continue until position is filled.
  • I notice that they have a visitor and a couple of postdocs. Anyone know if this is an inside hire?
  • I don't know, but fwiw, the visting prof seems to be a more senior rank than they're recruiting for, and appears to have a home institution overseas.  This is just based on an informal look at the internet, so I may be off base.
  • Has anybody got an interview call? I didn't hear from them.
  • me either, AND it feels like so many jobs on this list simply froze a few weeks ago.  No movement.  Am I crazy? (x5)
  • I'm just taking solace in the thought that no one seems to have heard anything from anyone in the past few weeks! (x2)
  • ^I agree. I mean, based on reports for other jobs, these committees are getting 300-400 applications. It's going to take them some time to do this process justice.
  • I guess we can take solace in the belief that the more time they spend making a short list, the less likely it is that they're pushing an internal candidate through... :)
  • My Goodness! 400 applications? Hoping against Hope! At some places I found it says offer accepted/ offer being made in such short notice and here no movement!
  • Please share the other places where you are seeing updated information! I'd be really grateful. Some of these postings had deadlines over a month ago. Would like to be put out of my misery if there is news somewhere.
  • 12/1: Anybody heard anything at all?
  • 12/2: Haven't heard a thing (x7)
  • 12/8: I was contacted and asked to submit a writing sample. (x8 woot!)
  • 12/10: A colleague was emailed today and asked to schedule a Skype interview
  • Has anyone else recieved a Skype interview request?
  • I haven't. (x2)
  • I want to reiterate the question, just in case: Has anyone else recieved a Skype interview request?
  • Yes, interviewed via Skype last week (x3)
  • Any news on this job?
  • Has anyone heard after the Skype interview?

  • Didn't they do this search last year? What happened?
  • ^I don't see them on last year's wiki.  I wasn't on the market yet, though, so I don't know for certain whether or not they ran a search.
  • Similar position was advertised (and evidently filled) 2 years ago; see Queer/Women's/Gender Studies 2014
  • This is an entirely different search: they've had a  retirement and a sudden death of a senior faculty member that taught cross-listed classes. The person they hired in the most recent search is still with the department. In other words, these are replacement hires.
  • Invitation for NWSA interview (10/16) x3

  • My email included the option for a remote interview if my NWSA plans had changed, so I would assume that yes, they are doing them.  I can't speak to whether or not those requests have gone out, though.
  • You could check your status on the application. They should have indicated whether you were selected for an interview by now.
  • I just checked my status and it says "not selected for an interview."
  • Has anyone heard from them since NWSA?  I thought this was the week we were supposed to find out about campus visits. (12/11)

  • Both offers have been made and accepted (2/22)

  • -----> Link to posting doesn't work!

  • The link is now live:  http://indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/1759
  • Does this mean IU will hire 2 people this season and one will start the 2016-2017 AY? I'm confused by the description of 2 lines. Any clarification is appreciated.
  • They're hiring one person this year, then they'll run a second search and hire a second person next year.
  • My application has been successfully submitted (received a confirmation email), but I'm using Interfolio for my recommendations and the online system says the recommendations have not yet been solicited. I input the Interfolio email address you use when you have to upload reference letters to an online system, so not sure what's going on. I haven't received the confirmation from Interfolio either. Anyone else experience this?
  • You have to log back into IU application and go to references, then click send or request for letter.  It will then send to Interfolio and then you go into pending and check out.
  • Thanks very much. That solved the problem on the IU side, but I still had to call Interfolio to get them to find the emails - somehow they had gotten lost in their system. Sigh.
  • Could you help me please? I have the same problem. The IU job site indicates that it has not even solicited the letters. I clicked "Send Email Reminder" but it seems that the emails do not go to the Interfolio. x2
  • I don't see how you can tell if the recommendations have been solicited? I don't see the "references" section mentioned above? Advice?? Thanks!
  • When you log in, go to "Your Applications." Then click "Reference Request" below "Application" and next the date of application. Then it shows "Recommendation Solicited" and "Recommendation Received" for each letter writers. Mine says none was solicited. Is this the same to everyone else?
  • I'm the original poster above. And yes, mine says none have been solicited as well. Sorry, should have clarified that when I said it "solved the problem on the IU side. " What I meant was that even though the status wasn't changing, Interfolio did receive the emails (though they had also gotten lost on their side and I had to call). Before I called Interfolio, I clicked on the "send reminder emails" buttons for each. I am now waiting for Interfolio to upload the letters - they are still in processing since its the weekend. I'm happy to update as soon as they are uploaded -hopefully the status will change to "recommendation received" at that point!?
  • Thanks for your clarification!
  • No problem! Here's a quick update - Interfolio uploaded my letters and under the "Reference Requests" link, it now says the date/time that each of the three letters was received, i.e. "10/31/15 7:37 pm." I also got email confirmation from the IU job system stating that each one had been received. Weirdly, it still says "No" under the "Recommendations Solicited" column. Not sure what's up with that...
  • Hi all. I'm a little confused by this interface. Does that mean we are supposed to manually solicit letters if we are NOT using interfolio. As in, I have just entered the actual email addresses of my letter writers. I figured IU would solicit them if they wanted further materials, but should I actually go ahead and send the email reminder even though it says recommendations have not yet been solicited? Hope that question is clear.
  • There appears to have been a snafu with the IU website, whereby (for some of us) letters were not automatically solicited after we entered the email addresses of our recommenders. So we had to go back in and click the button on the IU website to manually solicit them (11/4/15)
  • Hi everyone - writing from IU here to clarify this matter.  We are not asking for letters until we narrow the applicants to an extended short list.  We are in the process of doing that now.  The system will automatically send requests to the references you provided if you are moved onto the shorter list.  From there, we will have Skype interviews and narrow again, and then we plan on-site visits for Janaury 2016.  We had nearly 400 applications (!), so bear with us.  Thanks.
  • - Thanks for taking time to give us an update! Very kind of you!
  • That's how we roll at IU - but thanks for saying so!
  • I think the update here is helpful, but it would have been more helpful if -- in the future -- IU were to tell applicants not to have letters uploaded for the initial application, even if the system prompts you to do so. I am sure that many of the 400 applicants spent a few hours, as I did, trying to figure out the system and getting it to interface with Interfolio. And many of those 400 applicants probably also spent between $12 and $20 having Interfolio upload between 3 and 5 letters at $4 each. For most of us that money will have been in vain. A half-sentence of more specificity in the original ad -- noting that the system asks for letters but that you shouldn't upload them yet -- would have been best for everyone. Just a note for the future: letters aren't free.YEP
  • We do apologize for the confusion.  It is precisely because we were trying to respect the costs associated with applications that we elected not to ask for letters in the initial submission of materials.  We appreciate the feedback in how to signal that better since we hope to make the process as congenial as possible to all of the applicants.  Thanks.
  • 11/22 Message from IU system that references have been received
  • Invitations for Skype interviews have now been extended.

  • Has anyone heard anything from here yet?  (11/18)
  • No, I haven't heard anything. And there seems to be an internal candidate. <-- There are 2 internal candidates
  • Prelim interviews scheduled for this week (11/18)
  • Can someone explain what a prelim interview is? Some people seem to have been invited for interviews. Others received a rejection letter. But I haven't heard anything at all. So I'm not sure how to read this. (x3 - I also haven't received an interview invite or a rejection letter...)
  • (11/20): I received neither reject or invite. Probably means we were on the long short list and now they have gotten this down to the short list. I assume our rejections will be forthcoming. Good luck to those who got interviews!
  • I'm confused: I don't see that anyone has posted rejections here...11/21
  • Phone interviews occured last week (and maybe next week?). The timeline seems to be mostly determined by HR, rather than the committee. No idea how many people were interviewed or if it was a definititive list.
  • Cold and impersonal form rejection, seemingly auto-sent by the online HR system (12/23) x6
  • ^I'm so glad someone pointed this out - beat me to it.
  • Did anyone else recieve neither an interview nor a rejection?
  • I didn't either.  & I just looked- my application status hasn't changed in the HR system.  A tiny little part of me wants to hold on to the hope that they're just doing interviews in slow waves, but it's much more likely that they're keeping us on ice just in case.
  • I hadn't received a rejection but I just checked HR and it is listed as "not selected"
  • I finally got the cold, impersonal rejection email- a month after everyone else. (1/19) *2

Wheaton College (MA) - TT Assistant Professor, Sociology & Women's & Gender Studies - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

  • The successful candidate must have a PhD in Sociology with extensive graduate-level training in women’s and/or gender studies. The annual teaching load is 5 courses, with courses and service to the College shared equally between the two programs.
  • Candidates must be able to teach Introduction to Women’s Studies, and must indicate willingness and interest in developing courses in both Sociology and WGS around their area of expertise. Specialties within the fields are open, but we are particularly interested in candidates who bring intersectional, comparative and global perspectives into their teaching and research.
  • Link to Apply: https://jobs.wheatoncollege.edu/postings/1481
  • Applicants must upload a letter of application outlining the candidate’s teaching and research interests, current curriculum vitae and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Application deadline is October 16, 2015.
  • FYI, I contacted the faculty to ask if applicants with Ph.Ds in WGS are allowed, and they said it must be a Ph.D in Sociology.
  • OH COME ON!  Well, thank you for asking.  :)
  • Glad you got a response. I did not. Also, that's some BS.
  • This is a really upsetting representation of how people view our field.  What's the logic here?  Anyone can teach a Women's Studies class, but you can't teach in Sociology without a disciplinary PhD?  That.... doesn't even make sense. Ugh.
  • ^Preach!
  • I don't know this for sure, but my guess is that the department that will grant tenure down the road is sociology, so they want a sociologist. I also don't think it's accurate to assume that "anyone can teach women's studies." I think they're looking for someone trained in the particular tradition of sociology but has interdisciplinary experience. Yes, it's annoying if your degree is in gender studies. But every department has specific needs that they're addressing when hiring. Vent freely-- I'm not trying to shut that down, just trying to add another perspective to the mix. There are probably plenty of folks on the other side of the table for jobs that are prioritizing gender studies degrees. Sure, "require" and "prefer" are very different but still various degrees are seen as more valuable for various jobs. Not much we can do about it unfortunately.
  • Considering there are more sociology jobs than WGSS overall, and considering how there are still many WGSS positions that don't actually require a WGSS Ph.D even though plenty of us are on the job market, it's absolutely infuriating. I think it does promote the idea that those in a disciplinary program can "do" gender studies but not vice versa. That gender studies can be something you "add on" to your discipline but that interdisciplinary degrees aren't as serious or that we're wishy-washy "jacks-of-all-trades".
  • FWIW, it's a new Sociology department, freshly split from Anthropology, so possibly wanting to establish themselves.
  • Received a Skype interview request on 10/19
