University Lecturer in Urban Studies (Assistant/Associate Professor, permanent post)

The Department of Architecture wishes to appoint a University Lecturer in Urban Studies with a focus on global challenges. The Department invites applications from candidates with a research focus on urban issues through transnational and/or transcultural perspectives across different geographic areas of the world. Relevant areas of research include smart cities, planning, mobility, migration, landscape, urban heritage, digital urban modelling and computer simulation, and the socio-political, technological and cultural implications of rapid transformations. 

Candidates must have an excellent first degree in Architecture and a doctorate. We are seeking an individual with a rising academic trajectory and a strong record of research publications commensurate with their level of experience, who has the potential to become a key player in the Department's teaching and research activities. The successful candidate will be expected to take up appointment on 1 September 2020.

We seek an innovative and productive scholar whose research, teaching and service are grounded in theories, scholarship and practices of community development such as: racial and income equity, affordable housing, real estate development, community development action, community engagement, social justice, healthy places, food systems and related areas.

Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in planning or related discipline, to show scholarly promise through a research and publications record commensurate with their career stage, and to demonstrate dedication to the teaching and mentoring of students.

The School of City and Regional Planning is a global leader in fostering sustainable, resilient and just communities. The Department of Public Policy and Administration at Rutgers University’s Camden campus invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor position for the academic year beginning 2020-2021. We are a multi-disciplinary department offering students an undergraduate program in Urban Studies and Community Development; a Master of Public Administration (with an optional specialization in Community Development), including an accelerated BA/MPA, and an Executive MPA program for working adults with managerial experience; and a Master of Science and Ph.D. programs in Public Affairs with a concentration in Community Development. We are looking for a candidate whose training, teaching and research interests generally are in the areas of Community Development, Urban Land Use, Sustainable Economics, or Economic Development Policy. Special consideration will be given to those scholars with research interests in urban policy, housing policy, economic analysis of public policy, research methods, spatial analytics, city or regional planning, or urban agriculture.

Teaching responsibilities will include two courses per semester on community development topics across our programs, but especially in the undergraduate Urban Studies program and the Public Affairs M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise students and serve on doctoral dissertation committees. All applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarly potential commensurate with expectations at a public research university. Assistant Professor in Community Development Planning

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in community development planning. We are seeking a new colleague whose research and teaching engage with neighborhood change; community organizations; and the city, state, and national institutions and actors that shape neighborhood-level planning. We are especially (but not solely) interested in candidates whose scholarship and practice engage the role of arts, culture, and creative practice in neighborhoods and communities, and on the holistic evaluation of the impact of such practices. We seek a colleague whose work focuses on community development in the United States; individuals with transnational and international interests are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will play an active role in teaching and advising across our department’s four degree programs, and will contribute to the Social Justice undergraduate concentration and Community Development for Social Justice graduate concentration. Based upon the candidate’s expertise and interests, the successful candidate may also contribute to our undergraduate Global Cities concentration and graduate transnational planning stream.

In 2013, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning celebrated one hundred years of planning education at Illinois, and has an international reputation for training professional planners and developing future scholars. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a land grant R1 institution. DURP is a unit of the College of Fine & Applied Arts, which provides opportunities for collaboration with scholars, practitioners, and artists, and which also provides opportunities for outreach and engagement via the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and the Krannert Art Museum.

DURP faculty contribute courses to the Department’s four degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning (BAUSP), Master of Urban Planning (MUP), Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Management (MSSUM), and Ph.D. in Regional Planning. They also secure funding to support masters and doctoral student research assistants.

DURP currently has 17 full-time faculty members in addition to its adjunct and affiliate faculty, 89 students in the BAUSP program, 55 students in the MUP program, and 18 Ph.D. students. Its curricular offerings span sustainable design and development, community development for social justice, local and regional economic development, and environment and land use, and transportation concentrations, as well as a cross cutting transnational planning specialization.
A Ph.D. in planning or a related field is required. ABD candidates will be considered. The position is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty appointment that begins August 16, 2020. Salary is commensurate with experience.
