The Amherst College Department of Theater and Dance invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin on July 1, 2017. We seek candidates with expertise in acting at all levels. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; percent of our students are domestic students of color. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion. Rock Island, Illinois, is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents, located about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.

Candidates for this position are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to interdisciplinary education and the teaching of theatre as a liberal art. Specific responsibilities include teaching at least one section of Introduction to Theatre, two courses in Theatre History, and one section of Dramaturgical Research. The Bates Department of Theater and Dance invites applications for a full-time tenure track position as assistant professor of theater to teach acting and directing, and to direct departmental productions beginning August 1, 2017. The teaching load is five courses a year. Bates is an undergraduate liberal arts institution in Lewiston, Maine offering a major and minor in both theater and dance. Bates and the Department of Theater and Dance are committed to enhancing the diversity of the campus and the curriculum. The most competitive applicants will have a record of inclusive pedagogy and of engaging students from diverse backgrounds.

The requirements for this position include: an MFA or PhD, a minimum of three years of college-level or equivalent academic teaching experience, and a firm commitment to the values of an undergraduate liberal arts education. Teaching experience in a department that houses both theater and dance is preferred, as is an interdisciplinary approach to the performing arts as a whole. We seek a candidate with a firm grasp of the principles of the Stanislavski approach to Acting and Directing, as well as a demonstrated command of one or more of the following: non-majority or cross-cultural theater; contemporary and physical performance techniques; or new media. The successful candidate will be well versed in the history and literature of the theater and have the ability to relate theater and drama to their wider intellectual, cultural, and social contexts. An established record of professional achievement and evidence of ongoing creative and/or scholarly research in the field of theater is required and is given substantial weight in tenure decisions. A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a capacity to contribute to the department’s commitment to a diverse curriculum and inclusive pedagogies.

Specific classroom and campus responsibilities include: teaching beginning and advanced levels of acting; teaching beginning and advanced levels of directing, including directing theory and styles of play production; directing at least one departmental production annually; advising students and mentoring student independent study projects and theses. Additional responsibilities and priorities include supporting departmental or institutional ventures such as recruiting and working with visiting artists; engaging in interdisciplinary projects; and participating in events involving the wider community. Brown University (RI) - Open Rank Position in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies

The Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown University invites applications for an open rank faculty position in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies. We seek a scholar who will join a vibrant department that emphasizes the intersections of scholarship and practice. The ideal candidate will diversify our methodological, geographical, and theoretical strengths. This performance studies scholar could have expertise in performance theories and/or histories in one or more of the following areas of specialty: indigenous, global, and/or diasporic performance; queer theory; neurodiversity; critical race studies; and performance. The successful candidate will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, and will be expected to participate actively in teaching and mentoring students in our PhD program. Bucknell University (PA) - TT Open Rank - Theatre History and Dramatic Literature - CAMPUS INTERVIEW STAGE

The Department of Theatre and Dance of Bucknell University invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position in Theatre History and Dramatic Literature to begin August 2017. The candidate should be a student-centered teacher-scholar-artist who will support diversity, inclusion, and a liberal arts mission.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications for a successful candidate include a PhD in Theatre or Performance Studies, experience in directing at the undergraduate level, demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, and strong evidence of work as a collaborator and a mentor with excellent communication skills. Candidates must be dedicated to developing coursework related to specialized areas of interest in scholarship and research. Examples of potential areas of scholarly interests include: African American theatre and performance, Latino/Hispanic theatre and performance, Asian and/or Asian-American theatre and performance, Theatre and Social Justice, etc. Other qualifications could include knowledge of and commitment to the liberal arts tradition as well as professional theatre experience.

Teaching Responsibilities: We seek a culturally competent theatre teaching artist to teach a 3-2 teaching load with courses in Theatre History, Dramatic Literature/Script Analysis, and Introduction to Theatre (which could include Global or World Theatre). A beginning acting course could be added to the rotation. All courses are taught with an emphasis on performance practice. Additional teaching load includes THEA 102, a performance credit for students in faculty directed productions, and mentorship of various student directing and/or dramaturgy projects. Course development related to specializations and/or areas of interest is expected. Teaching load will not only serve requirements for the Theatre major, but also the College Core Curriculum, with a potential to cross-list courses with other programs.

Production Responsibilities: Direct one mainstage or showcase production at least every two years in rotation with other faculty, student, and guest directors. Mainstage productions are developed collaboratively with faculty, student, and guest designers. On-campus interdisciplinary projects are also encouraged.

Other responsibilities: Faculty members participate fully in department and college activities, including serving on committees, advising students, and contributing to the arts at Bucknell.

Scholarship: Directing productions on campus are considered primary scholarship. However, it is expected that this candidate will maintain and/or develop scholarly projects outside the university. Examples may include: directing, performance, written scholarship, digital scholarship, presentations, workshops within your specialization, and/or presentations at conferences or festivals.

Bucknell University invites applications for a full-time, open rank, tenure-track faculty position in Africana Studies beginning fall semester of the 2017-18 academic year. Bucknell University seeks to hire a dynamic educator who is committed to teaching and creative practice that integrates Africana (African, African-American, and/or African diasporic) studies with performance studies. Our chief concern is not with a specific arts disciplinary specialization, but rather with attracting an artist-teacher-scholar with an Africana Studies orientation, who is eager to work with students and faculty in creative, collaborative, interdisciplinary, imaginative, and original ways. California State University - Sonoma (CA) - TT Asst. Professor - Acting

The Department of Theatre Arts & Dance invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts in Acting, with demonstrable expertise in the teaching of either voice OR movement, beginning August 2017.

Primary responsibilities include teaching a variety of acting courses in rotation, including voice OR movement courses based on the candidate’s expertise, as well as lower-division, general education courses on the creative experience the Freshman Learning Community (FLC) or Second-Year Research and Creative Experience (SYRCE); creative or scholarly productivity, including regular directing in the department season as well as an active profile as a professional director; and participation in the success of a highly active and collaborative department and in the university through recruiting, mentoring, and innovation. Capacity to grow and to take on leadership roles in the program, department, and across campus is expected.

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in academic advising, to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work, and to serve on campus-wide committees. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of undergraduate research. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in Freshman and Sophomore year programs when available in their schools.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have an M.F.A with a focus in acting or Ph.D. or DFA along with demonstrated excellence in directing and other creative activity. Degree must be in hand at time of application. Preferred qualifications include at least 2 years’ previous university teaching experience, professional performance and directing experience, and experience serving diverse student populations. The successful candidate will come with a deep capacity and proven record of teaching or professional coaching of actors, either in voice and speech production OR in physicality and approaches to embodiment.

Voice and speech candidates should be able to teach traditional skills in voice, vocal anatomy, vocal production, International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), dialects and accents, rhetoric and speech. ROLE of the POSITION: Reporting to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, the Department of Theatre Chair is a full-time, tenured faculty position on a 12-month contract, ideally beginning July 1, 2017. The Chair represents the Department and the Nevada Conservatory Theatre to the College, the University, the community, throughout the state of Nevada and the country. In collaboration with faculty and staff, the Chair leads the department in all aspects of program and curricular development, scholarly/creative activity, advocacy, and service while fostering diversity and collaboration. Additionally, the Chair duties include a leadership role in the Nevada Conservatory Theatre. The Chair schedules and staffs all classes, supervises departmental employees, administers personnel evaluations, and recommends faculty for promotion and tenure as outlined in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Code. The Chair develops and manages departmental budgets, oversees facilities and equipment, and responds to concerns expressed by faculty, students, University officials and outside constituents.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position is full-time, tenured and on a 12-month contract. Ideally the successful candidate will take office July 1, 2017, possess a terminal degree or equivalency in Theatre from a regionally accredited college or university, and have a record of excellence in teaching and artistic or scholarly activity. Demonstrated administrative experience, including a history of resource management, fundraising, recruiting, promotion of university Theatre programs, program development, and community outreach is expected. The successful candidate must possess the qualifications for appointment with tenure. Further, the successful candidate will hold a documented record of advocacy with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with experience that includes a strong record of administrative leadership at the level of chair or higher; experience and facility with curriculum development; experience and facility with arts performance, management and production; integrating high impact, engaged pedagogies and new technologies into the curriculum; strategic planning; and student learning outcomes assessment. This position includes teaching acting, directing, theatre history, and theatre education classes in a NAST accredited program, as well as directing selected productions as part of the department's six-show season. Colgate University (NY) - Visiting Assistant Professor of Design

The Department of Theater at Colgate University invites applications for a one-year position in Design at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning in the fall semester of 2017. There is a possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on department needs and successful teaching in the first year. Completion of a terminal degree (M.F.A.) or equivalent professional experience is expected prior to the date of hire. The field of specialization is open, and versatile candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply: scenic, costume, lighting, sound, and/or video design. The teaching assignment of five courses per year (or the equivalent) will include at least one introductory design course in the candidate’s field(s) of specialization, as well as the design of two departmental productions per year. We especially welcome candidates interested in offering an advanced design course, and in developing an interdisciplinary, cross–listed course in collaboration with the Department of Art and Art History. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MA) - Senior Lecturer in Theatre Arts (Playwriting) - 5 yr. appt. (renewable)

The Program in Theater Arts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology seeks an inspired master teacher and an innovative artist in the field of playwriting to join MIT’s internationally-renowned faculty at the rank of Senior Lecturer. Successful candidates will demonstrate significant teaching experience and a deep commitment to excellence in undergraduate, practice-based education in the performing arts. The successful candidate for Senior Lecturer should have a secondary emphasis in acting, directing, dramaturgy or performance studies.

Responsibilities include teaching five courses per year, based on departmental needs and areas of expertise. Courses may include: Introduction to Acting, Script Analysis, Playwriting, New Play Production, Playwrights in Performance, etc. The opportunity exists to contribute to the curriculum by developing new courses and new play development initiatives Other duties include shared mentoring of students in pursuit of the major, minor, or concentration in Theater Arts, advising at least one student-led production per year and actively contributing to the continued intellectual and artistic growth of the Program in Theater Arts. Pursuit of independent research projects and productions is encouraged and supported.

Senior Lecturers are appointed to an initial five-year contract, renewable by review. As a vibrant partner in the Music and Theater Arts Section of the School of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences at MIT, the successful candidate will make significant contributions to the Section. MFA, PhD, DFA or equivalent professional experience is required. Proven experience and skill as an educator required. Relocation to the Boston area required.
