  • The ad strongly resembles the research profile of their current VAP, for what it's worth.
  • Yes, I noticed this, too. However, the committee apparently is trying to attract applicants having posted the ad in at least three major job bank listings as well as distributing it on listservs. Perhaps the VAP is leaving or not "a good match"? Who knows.
  • I would avoid placing too much stock in an ad matching a VAP. It's quite common for the inside candidate not to get hired (I speak from experience). There are myriad reasons for why this happens. Certainly don't let this deter you from applying for any job. Committees want to attract the best candidates--it is in their best interests to do so, even if they have a good fit with a VAP or Lecturer.
  • I do know that the faculty is reaching out to colleagues in PhD programs and at other universities to try to attract candidates. I don't think they'd do that if it's a pro-forma search. And, as someone running another search with a possible "inside" candidate, I know that I'm ready and eager to take a look at the whole pool.
  • I know for a fact that this is a "real" search. Do not let the fact that there is a VAP discourage you from applying here (or anywhere for that matter).
  • No interviews yet? (Jan 19)
  • Invitation for phone interview, 1/29

  • Last year they closed this search without a hire. Anyone know the story behind that? Is it even worthwhile to apply to it again if you didn't get a first-round interview last year?
  • I don't know the story behind last year's search but I can say without reservation that it is absolutely worthwhile to apply again if you didn't get a first-round interview last year. Hiring committees change from year to year - different people on the committee will change the dynamic and even if the same people are on the committee, aspects of the Department's priorities change from year to year. Also, the pool of applicants changes from year to year. There are so many variables that factor into a search. No reason not to apply this year if you are interested in the job.
