University of British Columbia Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Indigenous Theatre and/or Film Practice

The Department of Theatre and Film at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus, invites applications for the position of Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Theatre and/or Film with a focus on any or all of the following; Indigenous story-telling methodologies, Indigenous dramaturgy, Indigenous filmmaking, and Indigenous new media. This hire will enhance the capacity of the Department of Theatre and Film at UBC to be a world leader in the evolution of new artistic practices through an Indigenous lens. The successful candidate for this position will be an Indigenous artist recognized by Indigenous communities for outstanding artistic contribution to Indigenous storytelling through film, theatre and media.

UBC is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking Musqueam people. The Department of Theatre was founded in 1958 by Professor Dorothy Somerset to provide opportunities for students to study the theatre both practically and academically. The Department taught its first film courses in 1966 and was formally renamed the Department of Theatre and Film in 1992. The Department offers a comprehensive set of undergraduate (BA, BFA) and graduate degrees (MA, MFA, PhD) which include the study of acting, directing, design, production, dramaturgy, film production, Cinema and Media Studies and Theatre and Performance Studies.

This CRC in Theatre and Film is expected to be a full-time, tenure-stream appointment, made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful applicant will have an MFA, Ph.D. or a related terminal degree and will have a compelling record of artistic practice, be an emerging international leader in their field of creative activity, and whose profile and research proposal both meets CRC program criteria (described below) and demonstrates an excellent fit with institutional strategic goals and the aims of the position. The Chair will be expected to maintain an outstanding program of research and creative practice, to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to supervise undergraduates, graduate students, to contribute to service at the Departmental level and beyond, and to contribute to the public role of the Department and the institute through various types of artistic and critical engagement.

The ideal candidate will have established an innovative program of research that advances both disciplinary and interdisciplinary artistic practice and contributes to UBC’s strategic priorities and new initiatives and the Indigenous Strategic Plan. We anticipate the candidate would find productive collaborations with related units at UBC such as the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies, the Creative Writing Program, the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, the Museum of Anthropology, the Department of English Language and Literatures, and the Faculty of Education, among others. The candidate must demonstrate a keen interest in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Canada Research Chairs Program supports outstanding artists and researchers in areas that will further UBC’s strategic plan. The successful candidate should remain eligible to hold a Tier 2 CRC following approximately 12-18 months from their proposed UBC appointment start date. All Chair nominations are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat.

To meet the criteria of the CRC program, Tier 2 Chair in Indigenous Theatre and/or Fim Practice nominees must: be excellent emerging world-class artists who have demonstrated particular research creativity; have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; as chair holders, have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future artists and researchers; and be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality.

Tier 2 chairs are intended for exceptional emerging artists and scholars. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The School of Theatre offers comprehensive and diverse undergraduate focused programs with tracks in professional and applied theatre training. We offer a BFA in Acting, BFA in Design and Production, and a BA in Theatre and Performance in a program that has gained a national reputation and currently has a steady population of over 220 majors. The Department of Performing Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for two tenure-line positions in Theatre/Musical Theatre to begin in August 1st, 2020: one at the rank of ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR, one at the rank of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR. We seek highly dedicated teachers and artists/scholars who are deeply committed to interdisciplinary learning, innovative and impactful practice in scholarly/artistic work, and the preparation of students for life in a diverse and rapidly changing global society.

ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR candidates will have an established regional/national/international reputation in creative, professional, and/or scholarly practice with continuing potential for growth, and significant experience in teaching at the undergraduate level. The most competitive candidates will already be qualified for tenure consideration.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR candidates will have as well as strong scholarly, creative, and/or professional expertise, high potential for continuing growth, as well as demonstrated excellence teaching theatre and/or musical theatre.

Responsibilities for both positions include teaching undergraduate courses in the theatre and/or musical theatre majors, as well as general education classes within the AU Core.  Demonstrated ability to teach across disciplines or in multiple areas also is desired. Both faculty positions will teach four classes per academic year, maintain and grow their professional/scholarly profile, and engage with service at the department, college, and university level. Directing a production in the Theatre/ Musical Theatre program season is considered a course, and is included as part of the teaching load. Demonstrated ability to direct plays and/or musicals is required.

A terminal degree in theatre, musical theatre, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.

Received an email asking for three letters of rec, "all teaching evaluations for the last two years," "two representative samples of scholarship," and "a short (10 minutes or so maximum) video, briefly introducting yourself" while answering four questions. These were to be submitted by Nov. 8. I was applying for the Assistant Professor job. 

Received an email on 11/26 indicating that they will contact selected candidates for campus visits early spring semester.

Recieved a request for additional materials via interfolio that, in the end, appears to have been a system error. Frustratingly, the admin was aware of the issue (I sent an email asking for clarification) but rather than informing me of the error, they allowed me to generate all the materials listed above and simply revoked my ability to submit them without any notification. When I called to inquire about this change, I was informed of the mistake and was told they had not responded to my email because they were "busy." I know the market is rough, but I think folks shortlisted should be aware of how little regard this institution displayed towards colleagues.

Baruch College (USA: NY) - TT Assistant Professor of Theatre

Baruch College is seeking to hire a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Theatre. The Theatre Program is part of the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences within the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. 

Candidates are expected to develop and teach courses in Theatre Management or Arts Administration and Leadership. In addition, candidates are required to teach a large introductory lecture class in theatre arts once a year, as well as courses in their areas of expertise. Other responsibilities include course development, student advisement, and production coordination. Service on department, college, and university committees is required.

The Theatre Program offers a growing Ad Hoc Major in Theatre Arts Administration, which the candidate will be expected to help develop. The Department also has a large enrollment in the Theatre Minor and supports the other schools within Baruch with elective courses. We offer students coursework in a range of theatre and performance topics, from theatre history to directing. Our program produces two theatrical productions per year.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. required in theatre, performance studies, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have a proven record of teaching on the college level and an ongoing record of scholarly research, writing, and publication.

College of the Holy Cross, Worcester (USA:Mass) - Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Dramatic Literature

The Department of English at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment specializing in dramatic literature to begin in August 2020.  We seek a literary scholar focused on dramatic literature and performance from any period or periods.  We are especially interested in candidates whose research and pedagogy bring ethnic or global perspectives to the study of drama.  Teaching duties will include our Shakespeare survey as well as courses on the development of drama through the present.

The School of Theatre and Dance at Illinois State University seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member in Arts Administration who will also serve as the Managing Director of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival. This is a nine-month tenure-track appointment with an additional summer contract with the Illinois Shakespeare Festival. This position will begin August 16, 2020. Duties: Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in theatre management and arts administration. Serve as Managing Director of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, overseeing its business operations and audience development. Of particular note is an intensive 6-hour-per-week acting technique course which serves as our acting students’ accelerated introduction to actor training. Muhlenberg theatre faculty mentor undergraduate theatre students from a variety of cultural, socioeconomic and artistic backgrounds. As such, strong cultural and gender competence is required. Our faculty provide artistic leadership germane to their expertise in departmental production work, including directing, acting, coaching, choreographing, dramaturgy and supervisory mentorship.

The Theater Department at Occidental College seeks a highly collaborative Theater and/or Performance Studies scholar and practitioner for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate rank who will support and strengthen our current offerings in theater and performance scholarship as well as in acting and directing both in the classroom and in our department productions.

The ideal candidate is a practicing artist who has professional and collegiate directing credits and has strong connections to current scholarship and artistic trends in theater and live performance. This candidate should demonstrate both interest and expertise in a specific area of directing and scholarly or creative research, such as devised theater, community-based theater, applied theater, African- American Theater, Latino/a Theater, LGBTQ theater, or other areas of contemporary or international theater. We are looking for an innovative artist scholar excited to redefine courses and merge theory and practice in their teaching and directing. SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALS

The department looks for a colleague who will commit:

• to develop a truly interdisciplinary approach to the study and making of live performance in collaboration with colleagues, students, and guest artists from other disciplines, including our current collaborators in MAC and Music. Eventually, interdisciplinary collaborations in the classroom and in production should invite departments across the campus.

• to ensure that social justice and community based learning, practiced hand-in-hand with sophisticated artistry, will be cornerstones of our department.

Demonstrated leadership ability is expected in order to contribute to the management of the varied aspects of our program, including curricular innovation, season planning and publicity, recruitment and retention of a diverse community of theater students, support of our guest artist programs, fund-raising, and other initiatives.

We expect that in addition to teaching upper division acting courses (THEA 310 Acting 2) and courses in directing (THEA 310 Directing), this new hire will develop new courses in their area(s) of specialty and with interdisciplinary collaborators across campus. We expect that the successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to creating equitable opportunities for learning and for mentoring students, particularly underrepresented students. Of the typical course load of 5 4-unit courses, we expect that one of these courses will be to direct in our production program. QUALIFICATIONS

• We seek a colleague with a Ph.D. and/or M.F.A. in directing, or equivalent professional experience in Performance Studies, Theater and Performance, or Applied Theater.

SUNY New Paltz - Assistant Professor of Theatre

Major Responsibilities:

This position is a 9-month tenure eligible faculty position in the Department of Theatre with an academic rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The department has a long and celebrated history of achievement in the MFA in Performance Pedagogy degree, particularly in the area of Movement Pedagogy. Our ideal new colleague will contribute to the revitalization and continued success of that program by teaching movement courses in the BA and BFA programs as well as in the MFA in Performance Pedagogy program. Specific courses will change as demand requires and will be at the discretion of the Chair. The faculty member will mentor and coach performance students and will educate, organize, and mobilize student workers who are essential to the realization of productions.
The faculty member must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and will have experience in developing or the potential to develop initiatives, mentoring, and teaching that makes a meaningful performing arts education accessible to underrepresented or disadvantaged groups. Our colleague will demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools.

The preferred candidate will have an active professional career and demonstrate the potential for development on a national and/or international level and must continue a professional career in nationally recognized theatres and/or film/television. The faculty member’s creative and research activity should make a significant contribution to a body of knowledge within an expanded definition of the disciplines of movement/performance/theatre, as well as reflect a high standard of quality.  Creative activities should be related to the program’s curriculum, be consistent with and support the broader mission and initiatives of the department, School, and University, and exhibit potential for or evidence of securing external funding for scholarship or creative expression.

As a member of a community-oriented, tight-knit department and School, the faculty member will provide service, such as serving on School/University committees; contribute to recruitment efforts for the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs; participate in and support the coordination of student activities, open houses, and other department events/performances such as Mainstage productions and/or Shafer Street productions. The faculty member will mentor students; supervise graduate students and serve on thesis committees; and foster collaborative curriculum and research across the arts and broader campus.

Qualifications: Required
MFA or equivalent professional experience and training that equates to an MFA;
At least five years of professional experience choreographing movement in professional theatres
and/or highly visible academic institutions;
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU;
Active artistic practice and reputation in the field;
Demonstrated effectiveness in classroom critique and teaching movement based disciplines beyond graduate school;
The faculty member will be required to have a well-established creative research agenda/creative practice (if hired at the Associate Professor level), and/or clear potential for external funding, as appropriate, and potential for scholarship or creative expression that complements and expands existing expertise in the department and School;
An emphasis will be placed on candidates who are able to help students transition from academia to the professional world;
