GENERAL DISCUSSION

Musicology/Ethnomusicology 2020-21 Wiki Moderator: 5120j (5120janon@gmail.com)

  • A few comments from 5120j:
1. My rule of thumb for deciding which jobs to post is: "COULD an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" Not the more narrow question "WILL an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" So, this means I will post more general "humanities" jobs, and positions (mostly at small schools) looking for someone to teach music history/appreciation but also direct an ensemble/teach applied lessons/etc. (If the most important part of the job seems to be the ensemble directing/applied lessons and music history/appreciation is an add-on, I don't post it.)
2. I post almost the entire text of the job ad (except in the case of part-time/adjunct jobs) so that if any changes are made later, they can be noticed and noted. The ads also usually disappear from the institution's website after the application deadline has passed, so it's helpful to preserve them here. And it's very instructive to see how the winning candidate did and didn't fit the job as it was advertised. I do usually excise the description of the hiring school/department/facilities and the EOE boilerplate, but I leave the rest of it as-is. Removing anything more feels like editorializing on my part.
3. I don't have a current membership to CMS/MVL or SEM so if jobs are posted only in those locations, I won't see them. I don't think we've missed too many in the last few years though, since most jobs are advertised fairly widely.
4. My anon email is 5120janon at gmail, and I welcome comments and questions about the wiki and its moderation this year. I'm not a musicologist of any type and am not (and will not be) on the market myself, but I have a professional interest in the ethno/musicology job market and have been moderating the wiki for (ugh) going on six years.
  • Alt Ac jobs for ethno/musicologists discussion
    • 9/24 As an alternative to the VAP and/or adjunct gig market, where have you found employment? How do you market your work in music research within these fields? [I'm an ethnomusicologist and I've had some luck within the museum/heritage fields.]
  • Is the SEM annual meeting now (or has it ever been) an opportunity for finding full-time employment? Are you attending the SEM 2020 virtual conference in order to interview for a position? If you are unemployed, can you afford the expense of attending? (10/24)
    • 10/25 As someone who's presented at 5 of the last 6 SEMs and applied for ~200 jobs during the past three years, I haven't found SEM to be a useful place for networking. At least, I've never met someone at SEM who has then been on a job search committee. Most job committees are comprised of a majority of musicologists with one ethnomusicologist. So, I'm inclined to not renew membership at SEM and instead join AMS, just out of a sense that networking there might be more beneficial. Can't afford both and really wish for a dual-membership or conference situation like AMS-SMT this year. And none of my interviews have been at conferences. All of this is not to say that networking at SEM hasn't been useful at all. I've met wonderful and kind people, and I'm sure my presence at SEM has helped my candidacy w/ jobs. But the job crisis means that I can't wait 10 years to build these slow connections but need a job soon. So when I speak of usefulness re: networking, I'm thinking of the short-term job-getting approach.

  • 6/7/21: 2021-22 Wiki
    • I will probably create the 2022 wiki within the next month or so, so now is the time if anyone has comments about the structure for next year. I think this year's setup worked reasonably well; "Miscellaneous" still got too big but that's par for the course in the current market where institutions want to hire someone who can teach anything and everything. A couple questions - do I/we cast the net too far afield? Would it be better to streamline and stick to more purely musicology/ethnomusicology jobs (ie omit most of the miscellaneous section)? What about the "other positions of interest/alt ac" postings - was that useful for anyone? And the adjunct jobs section - keep it, or streamline and post only full-time positions? Personally my tendency is to put up anything that a music historian could conceivably be interested in/qualified for, but maybe people would find it a more useful resource if the focus were more narrow? Comments welcome. -5120j

  • 8/10 Thank you for this category -- I think that "related jobs" might be better, as "alt-ac" has been used less, currently. Also thanks for the smaller number of categories -- easier to scroll through for updates and comments.
