Let's do this! Try to stick to a few guidelines when posting to keep things consistent:

  • Post information about the position (or positions) including rank, source of information, and desired specialties.
  • Update when you know if a school has announced or cancelled a search, done preliminary interviews, invited candidates out for job talks, or made offers, even if this information is anecdotal (but please note that it's anecdotal if it is)!
  • Add date of posting to information whenever possible.
  • Please Use "Heading 3" when adding names of schools to this page.

A couple of features of this page, based on additional posts from past years:

  • There are two general sections:
  • Discussion: Post other job search related information here. In the past, topics have included:
  • Tally of number of people checking this page
  • Information about salaries offered relative to cost of living.
  • Information about the number of places people have applied, number of initial interviews received, number of campus visits/job talks, and number of offers.
  • Info on regular teaching load for each institution (e,g., 3 courses/semester is a 3-3 teaching load)
  • Please feel free to add topics here!
  • List of Schools: Post information about positions, here: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS ACADEMIC, PLEASE DATE YOUR POSTS!

For those of you who haven't received/accepted an offer and are thinking that you might not this cycle, what are your plans for the next year?  []

  • Since I am currently ABD, I am thinking about adjuncting, submitting a couple of dissertation-related manuscripts, and hitting the market again next year.
  • I still have two schools I haven't heard back from (and I don't think either has hired/offered yet, or even started campus visits). I am also applying for a post-doc, so that is a possible back-up plan. If a person is interested in teaching schools, there are still a lot of new postings coming out, and will likely come out through the Spring. (1/17/19)

People who received a job offer, could you share please the period of time it took from campus visit to job offer?. Thanks.[]

  • Received verbal offer at coffee with dean and department chair last day of campus visit. Written offer came via email several days later.  (12/31/2018)
  • Received an offer one week after the campus visit (12/7/18)
  • Received an offer two weeks after the campus visit (3/12/19)
  • Which school? (12/8/18)
  • If it took only one week it seems that you were the last candidate invited to the campus visit?. Which university?
  • I got a call from the chair saying they are going to extend an offer. They said they are putting together a letter and any negotiations will be with the dean. (12/8/18)
  • Which school? (12/9/18) <- Arkansas (Fayetteville). I left my visit last Tuesday and heard from them by Friday. I really appreciate how quickly they have moved throughout this whole process.
  • Is anyone following up with the school after campus visit?. I am just curious to know. I hear from other fields that they send thank you letters and follow up emails. Thanks.
  • Yes, I sent a thank you emails to the search committee (I sent to the chair and asked them to pass along to the search committee), the Dean, and if there were people I specifically requested to meet with or had particularly great conversations with I reached out to them as well. (x2)
  • Received offer via email from the Dean about one month after campus visit (after the school finished campus visits; 12/11/2018)
  • Received my first offer 1 week after campus visit. Received a second offer one month after campus visit once I emailed the dean to say I had received an offer. (12/16/18)
  • I was on the market 2 separate years. In both cases, I received an offer about 1 week after the campus visit.  In my experience (and my colleagues'), the timing depends on lots of factors.... Whether schools are hiring for multiple positions, when other candidates' campus visits have been scheduled, whether an institution's first-choice candidate has competing offers and has managed pushed for an extended decision timeline.... It can be very variable! Good luck to everyone out there checking email every 5 minutes. :) (12/19/18)
  • Less than a week in all instances.
  • The campus visits I have had this academic year have all been over 3 days (fly in one day, full day of visit, half day of visit & fly out). As such, I believe they have brought candidates in on 3 separate weeks. At the end of my visits I was told that the decision would be made between 3-5 weeks from the end of my visit. (3/4/19)
  • Does this mean that no one received a job offer as of yet??
    • Based on the ratios above, no one has reported a job offer as of yet. I know that some schools have already extended offers, but possibly none of the recipients monitor this page. (11/30/18)

I have seen some people listing that they were offered $ 50-55,000 salary. I have to say that I am shocked to my core. Is this a salary that a PhD in Social Work Assistant Professor makes?. This is the same salary that individuals with high school education level working at any retail or restaurant would make. Those who accepted this salary, how do you support yourself and how can you live on this very low salary?.This is a very serious question and there is no sarcasm involved here.

I agree. I dont understand why someone would go through a "struggle", as it was described here, to find a job that pays this very low salary. Unless each faculty has a thriving business on the side, I dont know really how they support themselves and their families with such low salary. I`ve seen people receiving congrats on salaries of $ 45,000!! too. I dont understand this situation. Even 60 and 65 is still low. I dont know where do you live or what lifestyle you lead but really how do you support yourself with this low salary? how do you stand in front of your undergraduate students who may make more than you do? what are you going to do then?. I feel that these salaries if we dont accept them they will have to offer more. This is very disrespectful to the status of a PhD scholar and no one should despair to the point of accepting anything that the schools offer.

  • ^ 1. I'm not sure who this is directed to since the only offered salary listing I have viewed so far was listed as an example. 2. "How do you stand in front of your undergraduate students..." so rude. 3. Congratulations to all of you with offers! Whether you take them or now, congratulations for getting them!
  • I think cost of living should be taken into consideration. Also, if this is a person in a two income household they can easily be making over $100,000 with their partner. Some social workers before PHD have very small salaries (as many of you know) so I think 50K is likely and large step for many of these people. Also, if the school is small and has a small endowment, a local school, they can expect a smaller salary. Please try not to shame your fellow social work colleagues beause the nuances of everyone's lives are not known and should not be assumed. => it didn't sound to me like they were shaming anyone, I think a lot of us are very surprised to see low salaries after a phd. I think some of the comments were just saying there are other career paths. I know my advisor didn't tell me anything about non-academic jobs. I appreciate hearing about them. If anyone knows any other places to look for jobs, please post.
  • Like with any job, and as stated above, things like cost of living, experience, etc. factor into the equation. Further, working as an academic provides many more benefits that must be given some value. For one, there is very little structured time; outside of courses, office hours, and meetings, one can dictate their schedule. Also, with most being on a 9-month schedule, you have the freedom to teach more in the summers for additional money, vacation, or do research to lighten up the academic year load. Most schools offer educational benefits to employees and some extend them to their dependents. Being able to send your kids to school for free is a significant financial benefit. Further, the intangibles of working around like-minded, liberal-leaning, educated individuals and living out your passions is pretty nice. I don't think anyone goes into any level of education for the money. Nonetheless, there are plenty of faculty who make six figures. Those individuals are more concentrated in R-Is, areas with high cost of living, senior positions, etc. and/or bring in significant amounts of grant money. Regarding dollar amounts, the reported range for Assistant positions on last years WIKI was $59,500-$81,500. In my experience, when I compare cost of living with salary ranges from schools, it actually seems that many of the universities in smaller towns and lower-income areas are offering a higher income to cost of living rate then universities is larger areas with higher cost of living. For instance, in the Midwest salaries are closer to the $60k mark, but in a lot of places you can buy a home for that amount. In comparison to the Bay area where entry-level salaries may be closer to $80k or so, but you can't feasibly live on that money. Even in some of the larger cities in the Midwest, you can live pretty well on $40k. Not lavishly by any means, but you can have nice stuff and be financially stable if you are wise with your money.
  • This conversation is rather interesting in light of this being on the Social Work board.
  • ^ That's what I was thinking. I'm also amused by the idea that most restaurant and retail workers are making $50,000 a year. So I guess the fight for $15 is over and we already won the fight for $25? Either way, the original point makes sense, our labor is being exploited in one way or another and without pushback, it will only get worse. I'm just annoyed by the poster's inherent devaluation of retail and restaurant work. I think the class bias there is pretty glaring and unfortunately (in my opinion) pretty prevalent in academic and professional circles. If even social work professionals/academics don't value the work of people in the service economy, how can we expect pro-corporate politicians to get on board for policies that improve the lives of low-income working people?
  • If universities are paying TT faculty $50k per year, what are they paying adjuncts? And if a social worker with a PhD gets $50k per year, what does that do to an MSW or BSW's ability to negotiate a higher wage? I think across the board, social workers are exploited at low wages and as long as social workers continue to accept low wages, we will never get anything better. I don't think we need to accept explotative wages in order to be good social workers, in fact, I think accepting low wages gives permission to continue to pay unfair wages to a lot of people, including the service economy. It seems to me we should be less complicit in these salary negotiations.
  • Public Higher Education Institutions don't have money. It's not the case that social work faculty members are making much less than other similarly-situated faculty. In fact, We are in a much better situation than some of our other social science or humanities colleagues. At my university, social work adjuncts have one of, if not the, highest per course rate. It's still not enough to live on, but it addresses my point that its more about (Higher) Education as a profession and less about us as social work faculty
  • I accepted an a TT 9-month assistant professor position at a teaching institution for $62,000. If it were a 12-month contract, it would translate to roughly $80,000ish/year. I know that is not a lot, but I am happy with it. I left a higher paying government job to get my PhD because I wanted to teach, not because I thought I would make more money. If money is what you are interested in, you are certainly in the wrong field<--Congratulations!!!

  • What about after the offer was extended, how long did you have to make a decision? (12/13/18)
    • No set date
    • Both of the offers I received had to be signed by early January, but the deans (who were aware I had other offers) wanted to know my decision sooner so they could extend the offer to the next person in line in case I declined.

(according to the numbers above, there should be at least 10 schools, if allowed, can people let us know what other schools they received offers from please? People who received a job offer letter, who sent you the letter?. The chair of the department, the dean, the chair of the search committee??. Please share with us. Thanks![]

  • 2 offers: one was sent from the chair of the department and the other was sent from the dean of the school. Both emailed me first to say they wanted to talk on the phone to extend an offer. => where?
  • Haven't received an offer, but was told it would come from the Dean. Also, I believe I was told the Dean would call. In regard to your perceived sentiment, I would suspect this to be a little dependent upon the structuring of the department/school.
  • DID ANYONE HEAR FROM UNIVERSITY OF DENVER? Denver has already given two offers, can't say if they've been accepted.
  • I got an e-mail from the dean saying that the search committee had selected me and he was trying to schedule a time to speak on the phone to extend the offer and provide details. I then emailed the other place I visited and informed the dean of the offer I had received. I got an email back from the dean a few hours later with an offer from them (12/16/18).

SIDE NOTE (and what I keep telling myself): You are smart and qualified and you will get a job. Take care of yourself during this process.  **Thanks for this encouragement. It certainly is quite the process and a test of one's self-esteem!

  • You all are awesome! **********

Watch out: I think some search committees are getting tired because I had quite the committee today (and I'm not the only one).

  • Teach across the BSW and MSW curricula
  • Apply by Nov. 1, 2018
  • Full Job Posting
  • Anyone know about this social work program or school?
  • 10/3/18 - YES!  I'm currently in my first semester as an assistant professor at Augsburg.  It's a really special program and University -- very diverse (especially the undergraduate program -- over 50% of students are students of color, and many of those are first generation students), small classes (I have between 11 and 17 students in my courses), and the entire university has a deep commitment to social justice and community engagement - not just the social work department.  There is a strong focus on teaching and you will be well-supported with great faculty mentors and peers, a well-integrated and organized curriculum, and tons of workshops and resources that help you become a more effective teacher and scholar.  The school is in the heart of a diverse and vibrant community in Minneapolis and takes its connection to the city and its neighbors very seriously. The university offers both a BSW and an MSW. The department currently has 11 full-time tenure-track faculty (this new hire will add a 12th tenure-line) and 2 full-time non-tenure clinical faculty.
  • 10/18/18: The Religious Affiliation is listed as The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Student religious breakdown: 15.5% Lutheran, 10.2% Catholic, 25.4 other Christian, and 10.8% other religions. 61.9% of their student body identify with a religion.
  • I just want to clarify that although Augsburg is affiliated with the ELCA, it has a commitment to religious diversity and inclusion.  For those of you who aren't familiar with the Lutheran church, don't let the word "evangelical" scare you.  The ELCA is a very progressive mainline protestant church, and not at all affiliated with "evangelical" Christian churches.  There is a substantial Muslim student population on campus and the Office of Campus Ministry has a Muslim Program Associate on staff.  There is an active Muslim Student Organization and a campus chapter of Hillel (Jewish Student organization). In the Social Work Department, we have faculty who identify with a variety of faith traditions, including Christian, Jewish, and Hindu.
  • 12/6/2018: Does anyone know the teaching load for this school?  - 6 courses/year (generally 3:3, but there are 2 summer sessions and you can spread out your 6 over the 2 semesters + the summer session.  For example, you could teach 2 in the Fall, 3 in the Spring, and 1 in the 1st summer session.  If you want to supplement your salary, you could teach 3 & 3, and then get paid extra to teach a course or two in the summer sessions.  Summer teaching is generally available if you are interested)
  • Augsburg faculty will be at CSWE.  Formal interviews will not be scheduled, but if you are interested in an informational interview about the position, contact the Search Committe Chair: Dr. Ankita Deka, deka@augsburg.edu
  • Any word on this one?

Anyone know anything about the campus climate?

  • I was a little concerned to see how many calls they have out within the College of Public Health, especially since they just brought on 21 people this year. That made me wonder a little about the climate, but I haven't found an explanation. Also, Philly itself can be a pretty tough city and the neighborhood surrounding the campus could make some feel unsafe. It isn't built-up and busy like the campuses in University City, it's kind of just in a seemingly lower-income Philly neighborhood.
  • Answer: Temple's College of Public Health and School of Social Work are in growth period following the hiring of the dean several years ago. We have a large faculty and a large student body and have been hiring faculty in record numbers of four years. Achieving status as an accredited school of public health (following decades of having an accredited department of public health) required us to hire a number of faculty to fill new roles in epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and environmental health. In addition, we have prioritized bringing in faculty across all the other disciplines (physical therapy, communication sciences, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, health informatics, athletic training, nursing) to live up to our pledge to reimagine public health in pursuit of the common good. The School of Social Work is integral to this mission. With a Director of SSW in his second year, we continue to seek additional early career and senior faculty to join the two new amazing tenure track faculty who joined us this summer. Regarding concerns about campuses relative to others in Philadelphia, we urge you to come and take a look at the dramatic changes occuring on and near our campus. Yes, we're an urban campus and that's not for everyone -- but it is ideal for living up to our mission of preparing social workers and other professionals in realizing social and economic justice. We're building new programs that emphasize interprofessional practice and clinics that will serve our neighborhoods. Take a look! Contact us.
  • Anyone know where they are in their process? (11/17/18)
  • They have done screening interviews and are bringing people to campus for visits. They do 2 campus visits before making an offer (first visit includes the job talk and meeting with department, second visit includes meeting w/administration, other collaborators, Realtor, etc.). They are hiring for multiple positions.

Offer extended; declined. The person who knows about the offer that was extended by Temple University, would you share your reasons for rejecting the offer? Thanks! Response: For me personally, decided another option was a better fit.

The interviewers are usually working from an interview guide and spend the majority of time writing down what you are saying. The actual interview questioning time is maybe 20 minutes. The first couple minutes are taken up by everyone introducing themselves to you, and the last bit is for you to ask questions. I would say 6-9 questions would be the norm. Hope this helps, and GOOD LUCK with your interview!!  (11/19/18)

I have also been asked about publications I have in the works.
  • Thank you for adding your experiences! We will all get through this :)

  • Does anyone know about the climate here?  To your question, I have heard mixed and conflicting things regarding the climate there. All I know for sure is that they seem to have a high turnover rate and hired a lot of people over the past two years. Last year, they hired 14 new faculty members for this 2018-2019 academic year and the previous year was about 8-10 faculty members, of course not all were assistant professor positions.  I am not sure if this is due to the number of students they have in their programs or the culture and environment climate at play there.  I will say go with an open mind and judge for yourself. Rely on your gut after doing all your fact findings. All the best to those with campus visits. (11/16/2018) <- Thank you for this information.
  • In response to the climate question, I am a new hire at UTA - and it was my first choice school. While geography was a large part of my prioritizing UTA, I also wanted to land at a school that valued and supported rigorous, impactful research but didn't take themselves too seriously. The many new positions are in response to school growth (the number of students in increasing by quite a bit every year) combined with many retirements in the last several years.  The great number of retirements in this field is happening across the nation, and the healthy economy is encouraging many other schools to be hiring multiple positions year after year.  Almost all the schools I see listed here this year are schools that were also hiring multiple positions last year. The climate can be tough if you are not used to hot weather, but the winter is pretty mild. Also, the cost of living is amazingly affordable here.  As for *school* climate, I have really enjoyed it so far - the leadership is relaxed, warm, family-friendly, and my colleagues are helpful, creative and inclusive. There have been numerous social events for faculty and staff, hosted in formal school spaces and at the homes of faculty and leadership.  The students are very diverse and just as talented as students I have taught in three other well-ranked social work programs at major state universities. As far as I can tell so far, my initial assessment that UTA is a place where faculty are committed to their research and teaching, but know how to keep it real and have fun -- appears to be true. < Thank you for this response.

Offer accepted 1/15/19 - They seem like a really great group of scholars and people who would be great colleagues,  the impression I got during my campus visit was very much in line with the response above.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VA)[]

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work announces three exciting opportunities on the horizon with The Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry & Innovation (iCubed), which builds human capital across the university and communities. It connects multiple disciplines and lived experiences through the creation of transdisciplinary cores, which are university-community partnerships that endeavor to solve problems that disproportionately affect populations in urban areas.  iCubed is unveiling several new transdisciplinary cores involving the hiring of visiting scholar positions, some of which will be affiliated with the School of Social Work.  Details and application instructions may be found below:

Wayne State University (MI) []

Position Opening for THREE Assistant/Associate Professors (Posted September 19, 2018)

  • To begin August 2019
  • The School of Social Work at Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan is committed to its urban mission. We invite applications for three faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, who are outstanding candidates with focused research, exemplary teaching, and commitment to community engagement. Evidence of a beginning research trajectory, potential for external funding and some teaching experience is desirable at the Assistant Professor rank. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure requires a strong record of research, external funding, publications, teaching and service.

Content Areas for Interested Candidates

  1. Behavioral Health and Criminal/Legal Systems; Assistant or Associate (Posting# 043859). We are interested in a dynamic leader in this area of expertise who can step into our Center for Behavioral Health and Justice; capitalizing on the ongoing research, evaluation and technical assistance currently in place across the state. Expertise in behavioral health includes mental health, substance misuse, and /or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Expertise in criminal/legal systems include one or more of the following: law enforcement, diversion, courts, community supervision, jails, prisons and/or reentry. We are particularly interested in recruiting a scholar whose research agenda is integrated across these two disparate systems to the extent that they can be a ‘boundary spanner’ in developing, implementing and evaluating interventions – at the individual and policy levels. Because the genesis of problems facing individuals involved in the justice system are multidimensional, faculty in the position will be strongly linked with Wayne State University scholars in other departments and colleges (i.e., Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychiatry, General Medicine, Public Health).
  2. Child Welfare; Assistant or Associate (Posting# 043857). Wayne State University School of Social Work has excellent relationships with Wayne County and the State of MI Department of Health and Human Services. Currently we are involved in several funded projects that provide support and technical assistance and opportunities for research. WSU is also home to the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development – a world-renowned center of translational research – that includes an Infant Mental Health Program and Early Childhood Center. We are recruiting a scholar who has in-depth knowledge of the child welfare system, with expertise in abuse/neglect, foster care, and work force development in child welfare and/or integration of child welfare with other systems of care. Experience in management and analysis of large data sets would be advantageous.
  3. Health Inequities/Healthcare Social Work; Assistant (Posting# 043858) Wayne State recently began a joint MSW and Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree program and we are excited to recruit a faculty member whose research and teaching is related to social determinants of health, health care systems, public health, environmental justice and/or epidemiology. The university and SSW are particularly interested in scholars focused on health issues pertinent to urban populations. Our campus supports a School of Medicine that partners with nationally known medical institutions and a robust research environment that includes an Integrative Biosciences Center (IBio), and a Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES), fostering transdisciplinary urban health research and scholarship.
