  • Any word? (12/3)
  • It's been quiet on my end.  Almost too quiet... (12/3)
  • I received a request for teaching evaluations and evidence that my forthcoming work is forthcoming on Nov. 7, but didn't post it here because no one else had posted anything and because I thought it was probably specific to my situation, which is a bit unusual (further along and at a university that is failing). No word since then, though, so they are either still thinking or have decided to go with people not on the wiki.
  • Hey, any news that isn't a rejeciton is good news!
  • So ... still no interview requests?
  • Did this get scuttled, or did someone land it behind the scenes?
  • 1/14: I heard they've invited 3 finalists for campus visits.

University of Stirling (UK) - Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Scottish Literature (Romanticism)[]

The University of Stirling seeks to make a full-time, open ended appointment at Grade 8/9 in Scottish Literature.

At Stirling, the Scottish Studies Network draws in colleagues from Literature and Languages, History and Politics, and Communications, Media and Culture, and caters for cross-disciplinary exploration, through scholarly and creative work, of issues of national and international concern in Scotland. The appointee will be able to develop the momentum already established by the Network and build on a recent track-record of outward-facing events and successful grant-funded initiatives. The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in an area of English Studies relevant to the post and with existing research specialisms in areas of Scottish Literature that complement areas of strategic importance for Scottish Literature within the Division. These include:

Description of Duties

The successful candidate will be required to teach on a variety of cross-period modules in the undergraduate English programme, to contribute to postgraduate teaching on the MLitt in Scottish Literature, to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, and to attract, recruit and supervise PhD students in relevant fields. In addition they will take a leadership role in developing a dynamic, interdisciplinary and impactful research programme for Scottish Studies which includes developing links with external stakeholders and is likely to result in grant capture. They will produce research outputs at an appropriate level for inclusion in REF, and they will take on appropriate administrative functions within the Division and Faculty.

Salary: Grade 8: £40,792-£48,677/Grade 9: £50,132-£58,089. This is a permanent position.

Complete applications received by November 1, 2018 will be given full consideration. Applications received after that date may be given consideration at the discretion of the search committee.

  • Guys, this was listed here as due Nov. 30, but someone on the Restoration/18th c. Wiki points out that all the ads (including the one on the university website) have it due Nov. 1. Application is still up, so I'm applying late.
  • Thank you for the update.  This is the second time that I have seen this happen this year.  So frustrating!
  • Totally frustrating. And you know, I just noticed that the date in the, surely cut and pasted, job advertisement was wrong too--seems like someone may have pasted and then deliberately changed the date. I hope not. But not sure how this particular mistake happened.

NOTES:

  • Also posted at Theory 2019 and New Media and Digital Humanities 2019
  • I've been asked to upload letters to "MLA’s Interfolio Faculty Search system" because the links in the official University site didn't go through. But it's unclear to me how to submit letters without an Interfolio link or an email address (and the search chair just repeated the instructions without more info.). Has anyone else had more luck figuring this out? MLA seems to just refer everyone back to Interfolio -- unless I'm missing something?
  • If this is an active query, I believe you need to go through the MLA's JIL listing, click on the tiny apply button in the JIL ad, and go from there (IIRC, you are correct:  the wording on the HR website and in the ad itself is not particularly clear).
  • Thank you! I just tried this and it worked -- only complication is that, since the ad has expired, you have to select the JIL option to search for expired ads. In case anyone else gets a similar email notifying them that their applications are incomplete! (And for everyone else, it appears that the committee is reading through materials.)
  • So I received a request for my letters on 11/28. I'm curious to know if this should be regarded as a "Request for more materials" as they have rejected someone already. That I received this request today, while others have received it before, suggests that they are doing a rolling request. Any clarity on this point from anyone? Has anyone asked the search chair if the pool has been narrowed?
  • See the job ad above. Letters were part of the original application. If you didn' submit yours, they probably couldn't consider your application without them, so they requested them. An additional materials request is usually the committee contacting you (not an automated system) asking for materials that were not requested up front.
  • Yes, I read the job ad above. The request wasn't from an automated system, but from the chair of the committee. I do think that you're right, but it's an odd situation. Most committees would reject all incomplete applications immediately.

  • Any news here? [10 Dec}
  • No news (10 Dec), but it seems late.  Perhaps they contacted someone not on the Wiki.
  • Anyone else who neither got a rejection nor an interview request?
  • Yep. I've yet to receive either (12/15).
  • Rejections usually come much later. If interviews have been scheduled, no news is usually bad news. (Nb: I've yet to hear, either)
  • ^^I'm the above poster. My mistake--I just noticed that some people have received rejections at this point. I'd say that either means they're reviewing on a rolling basis (as some of the job ad wording indicates), or that some committees keep a "back-up" pool in case they don't like the first round of interview candidates.
  • The point about the rolling review and back-up pool is defiitely correct, although I agree with the above poster that it is very rare to hear from a committee once interviews are scheduled.  Usually, they find their person and if they don't, often times the search is cancelled or postponed until the next year (as in the case of the Oklahoma State position, which appears to have gone unfilled last year and is back again with a slightly different focus).
  • I'm the rejected one. My sense is that they might not have whittled to a final interview pool. They wrote a very thoughtful, personalized note telling me that I was close not quite. I'm assuming, tho, though Oklahoma State really has moved on. Interviews are done and some have been invited, which is pretty much a rejection.
  • I'm one of the interviewees: interviews will be held "online" to avoid the cost of MLA; scheduling interviews for January 5, 6, 7
  • Given the personalized rejection of the above poster, here's a wild guess (and it's pretty wild, given the idiosyncrasies of search committees in general): perhaps those who received rejections were in the semi-finalist pool, and the rest of us who have received neither a rejection nor an interview request will be rejected later on.
  • ^^ that does seem pretty unusual, but anything's possible. My feeling is that, given that interviews are 1/5-1/7, it's *possible* more candidates will hear this Monday, but after Monday I would call it a wash. Thanks to the above posters who sent more information for us to theroize about.
  • Just, while I'm thinking about this: if the rolling theory is correct, then the date of application *might* be a clue to who has heard and who hasn't? Those of you that have heard something, would you mind sharing the date you applied?
  • I'm in limbo (neither interview nor rejection); however, I am a comparatist and contacted the search committee chair the day the position was announced to inquire if they'd be willing to accept applications from people with a Ph.D. in Comp Lit; I applied a day later. About a month ago, the search committee chair wrote to me because they couldn't find my writing sample (perhaps the fact that I applied early could account for that). It's, again, a wild guess, but since I applied early and haven't been contacted, the rolling theory seems to be improbable. But, again, we never know...
  • I'm in limbo, as well, and applied around Thanksgiving. Odds are seeming to be in favor of the limbo-ists being rejected, I think. Unless...it's alphabetical?!  Hope springs eternal...
  • Since the committee knows about and reads the wiki, maybe it's worth pointing out that if they are taking the time to personalize rejections, then that is an incredible achievement (even if they can't ultimately do it for all of us), one that other search committees could and should emulate, and one that is well worth to me at least a bit of time spent in limbo. <--So true! You've probably actually hit the nail on the head. I'm thinking all interview requests went out, and the time remaining is because they're being humane and writing kind rejection letters.
  • I just added a second rejection notification. I don't normally post on the wiki but I decided my information might provide some illumination given the speculation going on. LIke the poster above, I received an extremely thoughtful note directly from the chair notifying me that my application was seriously considered but I would unfortunately not be invited to interview. I sent in my application on November 1st and, for what it's worth, I'm definitely at the end of the alphabet. My guess is that requests for interviews went out on Friday as well as notes to those cut just before the short list was finalized. My friends who applied and haven't heard from the search committee have concluded that they'll be receiving the template rejection in the coming days/weeks. [PS -- I hope all the confusion caused by the "interview requests" and "personalized rejections to long-listed candidates" being sent out simultaneously won't dissuade future committees from doing the latter -- like the posters above, I experienced the gesture as such a welcome touch of humanity amidst this brutal process.]
  • Has anyone who hadn't heard as of 14 Dec heard anything yet? (18 Dec)
