Essential Duties: The Department of English at Bridgewater State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in nineteenth-century British literature with the ability to teach across the long nineteenth century (1789-1914). The successful applicant will design and teach upper-division and graduate courses in 19th century British literature and lower-division courses in composition or literature, as well as advise undergraduate and graduate students. Continuing scholarly activity and active participation in departmental and university-wide professional activities are expected.
Required Qualifications: PhD in English and university teaching experience required.
Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching and advising, and to working in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity. They should also have the ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning, the ability to work collaboratively, evidence of scholarly activity, and a commitment to public higher education.
Since faculty in the Department teach first-year writing, preparation in composition will be an advantage.

The Department of English at Lehman College CUNY invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor, effective August 2018. Candidates must have an active record of research and scholarship, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Department seeks an English Ph.D. in British and/or world literatures in English, with a particular focus on 19th-century British literature and its interrelations with transatlantic/postcolonial literature across time and space. It welcomes secondary proficiencies in the history of the novel; Arab/Muslim or African or Asian literatures in English; critical theory at the intersection race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality; and/or the interrelationship of English studies and digital humanities.
In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in 19th-century British literature and/or world literature, the successful candidate will be expected to teach core English Department courses in American and British literature, as well as general education and composition courses. The candidate will also be expected to engage in scholarship via conference presentations, journal articles, and book publication, and to provide service to the department, college, university, and community through advising, committee membership, and administrative assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-track academic appointment. Evening teaching may be required.
The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York, and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students, preparing them for employment, the professions, and further study. The teaching load is 21 hours (6-7 courses) per year. Service to the college, university, and community is part of the Lehman mission, as is a clear commitment to student engagement, including advisement.
Although the college is strongly teaching-focused, faculty at Lehman are fully engaged in research, scholarship and creative works. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty during the first five years for scholarly development, and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development, travel awards, and research with students. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. degree in English (or a closely related academic field) in hand is required by commencement of the appointment. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Evidence of commitment to public service is a plus.

- I'd be more understanding of such a quick review and/or a candidate in mind if the search committee hadn't asked for *so many* things up front, and so many of which aren't typical pieces one already has drafted (like a diversity statement and a combined research and teaching statement). Multiplied by hundreds of candidates, that's a lot of wasted time for documents that clearly didn't get much of a look.

Utah Valley University’s Department of English and Literature invites applications for a tenure-track position in 19th Century British Literature, to begin August 2018.
Responsibilities include: teaching advanced courses in 19th Century British literature, lower-division surveys of British literature after 1800, lower-division courses in literary theory, and first-year composition. Average class sizes of 20-25 students remains a departmental priority. Faculty teach a standard course load of four courses per semester, with reassigned time competitively awarded for scholarly research.
The English and Literature department offers BA and BS degrees in English and English Education. THE POSITION: This is a full-time, tenure-track position for a generalist in British literature after 1700. A secondary area of specialization in creative writing is welcome. Primary specializations in Romantic, Victorian, or twentieth-century literature are desirable, as is expertise in postcolonialism or ecocriticism. All department members teach upper- and lower-division courses, including first-year composition. The college operates with a 3-1-4 (or 4-1-3) course load that includes a 3-week January term. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Languages and Literatures includes five tenured or tenure-track faculty as well as contingent members. We offer two areas of emphasis for English majors (Literature and Writing) as well as a Spanish major and (newly) a Publishing major. We also offer teaching endorsements in English and Spanish and participate in the college's Master of Arts in Teaching program. Approximately 40 students are English majors and minors, another 10 are Spanish majors, and a handful are Publishing majors. The department also provides general education courses taken by almost all of the students at Hastings College.

They told me that this first round of cuts doesn't mean much. All it means is that they've identified all the applicants who meet the minimum degree and area requirements for the position. It looks like some people received a request for additional materials, but not everyone received this request.

- Has anyone received such a request? I am under the impression that they are not yet at materials phase. The letter simply informed applicants that they made a very preliminary first cut. There will be another cut before they reach out to references, then they will move from there to a narrow pool of finalists. [?]
- Agreed. The letter did not state this, but two responders indicated above that they had received a "request for additional materials" (indicated on 2/9), and someone changed the status language to "Additional Materials Requested." So unless this is a mistake, or the individuals who changed those things are interpreting "additional materials" in some other way..... (2/19)

- Aha! That makes sense now. I made the intial note indicating that a first cut had been made. So it seems that we are all on the same boat. Our references are being contacted, but we have not had any direct correspondance from GS wherein they ask for additional materials. At least, this is how I am understanding it. If there is someone out there who has received an email asking specifically for additional materials, please let us know!
- What's up with the Google Hangout request? Of all the people who received requests for recommendations, only one person received an invite for a phone interview? Why would the search committee ask for recommenders, and then proceed to the next stage without bothering to contact them? I know nobody has contacted my recommenders yet, so the whole thing seems strange. In fact, I've never seen a search committee operate in such a bizarre fashion. The whole time, I've received several weirdly formal letters (!) from the department chair at stages in the process that wouldn't normally require any communication at all. Then there's this request for recommenders at a strangely early stage, which has only garnered confusion and false hope on this forum. Somebody indicated that this is all pretty normal for this particular school, but it seems like this process has been handled rather ineptly.
