Bridgewater State University (MA) - TT Asst. Professor - Nineteenth C. British Lit. (1789-1914) - CAMPUS VISIT STAGE[]

Bridgewater State University is a four-year comprehensive university in southeastern Massachusetts, serving over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students via opportunities for close student/faculty interaction and a commitment to social justice. Two-thirds of our students are first-generation college students, students of color, and/or Pell Grant recipients. BSU is committed to the achievement of academic excellence by students from diverse backgrounds. BSU is primarily a teaching institution with ample opportunity for research (especially in collaboration with students), where faculty teach a 4/4 load with opportunities for course reductions and reassignments for service and research.

The successful candidate joins a vibrant campus supportive of literature and writing that includes a Visiting Authors Series, thriving Undergraduate Research program, and nationally recognized student journal, The Bridge. In addition to the literature major, the English Department houses numerous concentrations and minors, including those in Writing & Writing Studies, Film Studies, Childhood Studies, American Studies, Irish Studies, and Ethnic and Indigenous Studies. The Department also offers a Master's degree in English. Faculty are encouraged to teach and design courses according to their particular areas of interest. Our mission is to cultivate critical reading, writing, and thinking through the study of language, interpretation of literature, and the creation and analysis of texts. In doing so, we aim to develop ethical and discerning individuals prepared for civic, professional, and intellectual life.

Essential Duties: The Department of English at Bridgewater State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in nineteenth-century British literature with the ability to teach across the long nineteenth century (1789-1914). The successful applicant will design and teach upper-division and graduate courses in 19th century British literature and lower-division courses in composition or literature, as well as advise undergraduate and graduate students. Continuing scholarly activity and active participation in departmental and university-wide professional activities are expected.

Required Qualifications: PhD in English and university teaching experience required.

Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching and advising, and to working in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity. They should also have the ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning, the ability to work collaboratively, evidence of scholarly activity, and a commitment to public higher education.

Since faculty in the Department teach first-year writing, preparation in composition will be an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with a publication record or comparable professional preparation are preferred.

Candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to college and university initiatives in digital pedagogy and scholarship and/or interdisciplinary collaboration are particularly encouraged to apply.

BSU is actively seeking to diversify its workforce and encourages candidates to discuss the perspectives or experiences they bring to their teaching and scholarship that would contribute to this goal.

Special Conditions for Eligibility: Please be aware that employment at Bridgewater State University is contingent upon completion of a successful background check.

EEO Statement: Bridgewater State University (BSU) is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer which actively seeks to increase the diversity of its workforce. We are dedicated to providing educational, working and living environments that value the diverse backgrounds of all people.

The Department seeks an English Ph.D. in British and/or world literatures in English, with a particular focus on 19th-century British literature and its interrelations with transatlantic/postcolonial literature across time and space. It welcomes secondary proficiencies in the history of the novel; Arab/Muslim or African or Asian literatures in English; critical theory at the intersection race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality; and/or the interrelationship of English studies and digital humanities.

In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in 19th-century British literature and/or world literature, the successful candidate will be expected to teach core English Department courses in American and British literature, as well as general education and composition courses. Although the college is strongly teaching-focused, faculty at Lehman are fully engaged in research, scholarship and creative works. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty during the first five years for scholarly development, and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development, travel awards, and research with students. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. degree in English (or a closely related academic field) in hand is required by commencement of the appointment. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Evidence of commitment to public service is a plus.

COMPENSATION: Salaries are commensurate with education and experience.

Starting Date: July 1, 2018

Qualifications: Minimum requirements are a PhD. or "All But Dissertation" by the time of appointment.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience

The English Department at the University of California, Riverside has immediate needs in this area. We especially wish to attract scholars whose work engages nineteenth-century Britain’s global contexts, an emphasis that will complement our departmental strengths in transnational, hemispheric, and diasporic literatures. “Global contexts” may be conceived in diverse ways, whether as imperial and colonial power; as part of the Black Atlantic, Pacific, and other regional constellations; as a node within international political, cultural, and industrial connections; as related to environmental contexts or eco-critical methods; and other literary, cultural, theoretical, historical, and scientific interpretations of “global” not anticipated in this list. We are interested in scholars taking the very newest approaches to the field, beyond the limitations of conventional understandings of “Romantic” and “Victorian.” We seek a scholar whose work will create the richest connections across the department and campus.

We encourage applicants to visit our departmental website for information about our undergraduate and graduate programs as well as our faculty: http://www.english.ucr.edu

Application Procedure: Please provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a sample of teaching evaluations, a statement of contribution to diversity, a statement of research and teaching, a writing sample and a minimum of three recommendation letters. NOTES:

  • It's quite surprising that Skype interview requests went out only four days (over a weeknd) after the deadline applications.
  • Yes, agreed the turnaround is unusually quick. They probably had a candidate in mind.
  • I'd be more understanding of such a quick review and/or a candidate in mind if the search committee hadn't asked for *so many* things up front, and so many of which aren't typical pieces one already has drafted (like a diversity statement and a combined research and teaching statement). Multiplied by hundreds of candidates, that's a lot of wasted time for documents that clearly didn't get much of a look.

  • Did those who posted about not receiving an interview get an email?
  • I would assume so.  I'm still waiting on a response as well.
  • This is the rejection email: "Dear applicant, We appreciate your interest in the position. At this point, we have solicited references and writing samples from candidates whose applications remain under active consideration. We were fortunate to have an overwhelming response to our advertisement of the position, and we had to make difficult decisions. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Warm regards, Search Committee, Barnard College Assistant Professor of English" [posted 12/7]
  • I'm slightly confused. I was asked to submit more materials, but I have not heard anything and that was about three weeks ago. Are the people who are saying that they were rejected with no interview also people who were asked to submit more materials? Or are they people who were rejected without being asked to submit more materials?
  • I received a rejection letter and was not asked to submit more materials. The letter implied that, since you were asked for more materials, you may still be under active consideration. Looks like they still haven't invited people to interview yet.
  • Has anyone heard anything about interviews? If so, please update the Wiki.
  • Nothing here as of 12/15.  Perhaps they aren't holding MLA interviews?  Seems weird.
  • It is odd. But I found last year that even people who used this wiki failed to update it as the process went further along. It seems likely that they have already notified and that the interviewees just haven't updated here.
  • Can the poster who updated the banner (to Campus Visit Stage) also post when they heard or scheduled the campus visit? Was the poster asked for a campus visit themselves, or did they hear from someone else that the committee had moved onto campus visits? [posted 1/22]

NOTES:

  • Job description lists desired teaching area as 18th century literature
  • Also posted at Restoration/18th-Century 2018
  • Received letter saying that I made the first cut of applicant pool. Committee members will contact references and begin scheduling interviews in the next couple of weeks. (email; x10) -----congrats!>
  • To Above: the letter was sent via email
  • Has anyone who received the letter about references confirmed that their references have been contacted yet?
  • as x10 above, let me just say that I think it's highly unlikely they are doing phone calls to our references.
  • I would add that, based on the response here, it seems like a pretty liberal use of "semi-finalist" in the letter.  That said, making the first cut of an applicant pool is still worth something.
  • I have a friend who works at Georgia Southern in the writing program (but is not involved in this search), and I asked about how GS conducts searches. They told me that this first round of cuts doesn't mean much. All it means is that they've identified all the applicants who meet the minimum degree and area requirements for the position. It looks like some people received a request for additional materials, but not everyone received this request.
  • If you were someone who received a request for more materials, would you mind sharing what it/they were (writing sample, teaching portfolio, etc.)? Thanks
  • Has anyone received such a request? I am under the impression that they are not yet at materials phase. The letter simply informed applicants that they made a very preliminary first cut. There will be another cut before they reach out to references, then they will move from there to a narrow pool of finalists. [?]
  • Agreed. The letter did not state this, but two responders indicated above that they had received a "request for additional materials" (indicated on 2/9), and someone changed the status language to "Additional Materials Requested." So unless this is a mistake, or the individuals who changed those things are interpreting "additional materials" in some other way..... (2/19)
  • Is it possible that contacting references/or getting rec letters was understood as "additional materials requested"?
  • That's how I understood it (I'm one of the two who marked the request above).
  • Aha! That makes sense now. I made the intial note indicating that a first cut had been made. So it seems that we are all on the same boat. Our references are being contacted, but we have not had any direct correspondance from GS wherein they ask for additional materials. At least, this is how I am understanding it. If there is someone out there who has received an email asking specifically for additional materials, please let us know!
  • What's up with the Google Hangout request? Of all the people who received requests for recommendations, only one person received an invite for a phone interview? Why would the search committee ask for recommenders, and then proceed to the next stage without bothering to contact them? I know nobody has contacted my recommenders yet, so the whole thing seems strange. In fact, I've never seen a search committee operate in such a bizarre fashion. The whole time, I've received several weirdly formal letters (!) from the department chair at stages in the process that wouldn't normally require any communication at all. Then there's this request for recommenders at a strangely early stage, which has only garnered confusion and false hope on this forum. Somebody indicated that this is all pretty normal for this particular school, but it seems like this process has been handled rather ineptly.
  • I also received an interview invitation but had not yet had the chance to update. They have now requested recommendation letters.
  • Anyone heard anything post-interview yet?
  • They said they would try to make their decisions by the end of this week. They just finished their interviews on March 5. (3/6)
  • Still quiet for everyone?
  • Received email saying position has been filled. (4/23)
