The Department of English at Florida International University invites applications for a full-time instructor specializing in 19th Century British/Victorianist, beginning fall 2017. Possible subspecialties include empire, race, gender, and sexuality studies. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in English or a related field and have a strong teaching record. The successful candidate will have a 4/4 teaching load over nine months, with courses in lower and upper divisions.
The appointment will be made at the level of Instructor, with possibilities for promotion to Senior Instructor. This position is renewable, contingent upon budget, and offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

The Department of English at the Ohio State University at Mansfield invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in nineteenth-century British literature beginning in Autumn 2017. Candidates who work on Romantic and/or Victorian literature are invited to apply, and a secondary specialization in poetry is especially welcome. Teaching load for tenure-track faculty is typically 3/3 with reductions during the probationary period. - What's up with their doing campus interviews in November? Seems improbable. Insider candidate? They're asking an awfully lot from applicants if that's the case...
- Many smaller universities do early searches before MLA. It gives them leverage because their candidates have to accept or decline before they have offers from other schools. It keeps the university in question from having to compete as much by minimizing the potential for a given candidate to have received multiple offers (since most interviews haven't yet happened). As more schools ditch MLA and move to Skype interviews, this will probably become more common.
- Although it's hard to believe these schools would believe the multiple-job-offer scenario is much of a risk -- considering there are about 10 jobs in this field per year for hundreds of candidates.
- Well, it happened several years ago at a school I was VAP at. Top two candidates took jobs at other institutions and the third flamed out in the campus interview. Called in a couple more from the short-list, but ultimately the department determined it was a bust. It seems nuts, but it happened.
- I'm also at a small, 3/3 university. The first year in my current job, I was on a search committee, and we ended up hiring our fourth choice after MLA interviews. One candidate couldn't make the campus visit and dropped out, one candidate was rude and annoying, and another candidate (the one I'd initially really wanted) crashed and burned in his department presentation during the campus visit because he couldn't manage his time (he had clearly memorized lengthy answers that didn't fit the time allotted, and when asked to adjust for time, couldn't).

- Skype interviews happened in mid January. At the end of the interview they told me that they didn't really have a specific timeline going forward. It's entirely possible that they have invited people for campus visits already and those people just don't update this wiki. Also possible, though less likely I think, that there are unique circumstances in this search.

- I need to register the particular cruelty of this search. The ad requests applications from the most vulnerable people in academia, and requests that we highlight that vulnerability in the cover letter, so we compose narratives that incorporate what may be a very painful history into a trajectory that leads to this position. Then they email everyone to ask us to set aside an entire day for interviews -- no small task for many of us -- just in case we make it through the first round. They tell us that the first-round decision will be emailed the evening of election night, when those same vulnerable populations encouraged to apply are waiting to see if we can expect to retain even our current modest legal protections under the coming administration. No email comes and we are left to interpret silence as rejection as we come to terms with the fact that we will, in fact, not be safe; neither will our friends and loved ones; neither will our students. We cannot take a starter job at a rural school or in a red state and flip it for something better, because we are not safe outside cities. And the glimmer of hope that we had that this position, in a major city, at a school that seemed to value our perspectives, might offer a lifeline turns out, of course, to be fantasy. All job applications involve a level of self-delusion, the ability to cast oneself into an unlikely future in the hope that such casting might conjure such future into being. But this application, the level of investment required by the structure of the search, and the timing of the decisions, is mind-boggling in its callousness, and undermines whatever commitment to diversity the call aspired to communicate.
