The Department of English at Albright College invites applications for a tenure-track Professor position in nineteenth-century British Literature. Applications in the areas of empire, transnational and postcolonial studies and gender and sexuality studies will be given special consideration. The successful candidate will have an established publication record or the promise of excellent publication and evidence of effective teaching.
Teaching expectations include six undergraduate courses annually, including a survey course that offers students the opportunity to engage in the study of world literature so as to expand their horizon beyond the Anglo-American orbit. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin prior to the start of the Fall 2016 semester.

Job description: The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen invites applications for the position of Full Professor of Modern English Literature and Culture. The position
The professor will:

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary depending on qualifications and work experience. For candidates at full professor level, the salary ranges from a minimum of € 5,219 to a maximum of € 7,599 (salary scale Full Professor 2 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) gross per month for a fulltime (1.0 fte) position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. For international candidates an advantageous tax rule may be applicable.
The new professor will start work in January 2017. An assessment may be part of the procedure.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to a wide range of teaching outside her/his own area of specialisation, including literary theory and English literature from the Middle Ages to the present day.

- There's a spot for "Reference Requests" in the application form on the UH HR site. It will e-mail your recommenders automatically when you finish.
- Ditto. I used the "recommended letter of refs" tabs to upload all of the additional teaching materials separately.
- Infurtiating that they requested all these documents only to narrow the pool so quickly.
- Agree with the above poster. Houston only had about a week with numerous materials (cover letter, CV, writing sample, recs, abstract, teaching packet) from between 100-200 candidates at least, and they already have an interview list? Abington requested interviews a little over a week after their deadline closed. (<--True, but they also only requested two short documents from candidates which makes that quick decision more ethical in my mind) Is there a new criterion that enables these lightning-fast decisions? Let's hope these search committees have enough sense to stop the cannibalization of the profession that we keep seeing each post-2008 job season where half of the already scarce entry-level positions go to already-employed TT Assistant/Associate Professors whose jobs are not being replaced.

Teach a wide range of English courses during the 9 month academic year, focused on Romanticism, British literature, and critical theory, as well as core courses in support of the English and University Studies curricula. Contribute to departmental and university governance as appropriate and attend departmental meetings. Participate in College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the University Studies program, and general University events and functions as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD degree in English, Comparative Literature, or a related field.
Research background, as demonstrated in publications, conference presentations, and/or the dissertation, must include: British and Continental Romanticism; Animal Studies; Human Rights; Ecocriticism. Successful completion of a background check.

- I second this comment! Whoever gets this job please tell their HR department not to send such an obnoxiously callous letter. It is the worst I have seen in over 200 letters. Disrespectful and unprofessional. Good luck at such a school.
- The issue of how we as candidates react to and live with rejections letters is so important in our current academic culture and climate. A warm rejection letter has the the power to bath a difficult application process in a softer light, even if that only lasts for a moment. Several years ago at least one school mentioned our book or dissertation titles by name.
- Another applicant's adviser emailed the department about the wording of the rejection letter and received a response. The rejections are automatically generated by HR, which doesn't make it any less horrible, but at least now they know about wording and tone of the letter.
- As though members of the department have no control over the tone of the letter! Please. Unfortunately this just reflects the current attitude toward untouchables, the untenured applicants. There are so many of us they don't even feel the need demonstrate the most basic respect. You would think that at a time when the humanities is under attack from all sides in our culture we could at least work to be thoughtful to each other.
- I agree with the above sentiments and concerns, although I have to warn people who are going into their first job market that the disregard can be even more ugly. It is good to see people remarking on this lack of professionalism. Even in this abysmal market, there are still searches that are conducted professionally. Unfortunately, you will also be subjected to numerous searches where there is clearly a favored candidate, there's no communication, and/or the committee says one thing and does another. For example, the search committee that doesn't follow up after an interview. I just have to keep reminding myself that I wouldn't want to work with people who think it is permissible to treat people with such disregard. It might seem like you have no power in this horrible process, but you do have a voice and its good to see it expressed here. I would think twice about taking this job.
- It's really true. Personally, I think all rejection letters should be titled, "Trigger Warning: Unhappy Professional Feelings Inside." Otherwise, even though I obsessively read the wiki every day and already know that I wasn't one of the people solicited for more materials or invited for an interview, I might accidentally open a completely innocuous-looking email and discover a cold rejection letter that bathed my application process in harder light (am I doing the mixed metaphor right?), opening up all kinds of trauma. I hope everyone wrote a strongly worded email to the department to chastise them for the behavior of an HR department that let us know we were rejected months before most other schools will have the courtesy to let us know they even received our applications. I expect every school that rejects me to wash my feet and loins with their own hair, which has been soaked in appropriate tears shed over the corporatization of the university.
- To the above poster with the snide response: What is needed is solidarity, not hostility. Perhaps you think that needling desperate people somehow makes you superior. It's a foolish stance because we are all desperate, including you. What makes this market miserable has serious consequences for all humanities faculty at every level of higher education. Expressing disdain for people with professional aspirations who wish to be treated in a professional way only further undermines job candidates and the profession. The barb about corporatization doesn't make any sense because it would be hard to argue with the fact that the University has been undermined by the systematic exploitation of labor, among other damaging trends. The recent MLA report on the job list shows that the market has not recovered. In fact, it's worse than immediately after the recession, and the trough is deeper than the aftermath of Black Monday in the late 80s. The people who come here to find some semblance of hope, and dare I say it camaraderie, don't need to be shat on anymore than they have been and will be, even if it momentarily makes your feel like you have some kind of power over this nightmare situation.
- ^^^^THIS. I personally found the e-mail comically representative of the "state of the discipline" as it were, but I was troubled by this condescending comment. We gain nothing by cutting each other down. It doesn't help any of us get hired more quickly, for instance, whether we are in solidarity or contention, so why not facilitate positive emotions and connections rather than bitter ones?
- Trolling the wiki is grotesque behavior. Yet did neither of the two subsequent posters understand the rude poster above? Is this what a doctorate in English lends one in terms of reading skills? Courtesy notwithstanding, clearly the point is that the outrage regarding the content of an automated email is out of proportion. An automated email from human resourcesl in no way serves as a barometer of the field. To assert otherwise demonstrates poor critical reasoning (or demands some kind of actual evidence). Further, many jobs will, if past experience is any indicator, hold out in rejecting us for weeks or months after the interview has taken place. The language of solidarity, detached from anything like material improvements in the labor market, is nothing but a safety blanket. The “barb about corporatization” does indeed make sense as the desire of the wiki posters above is clearly to feel as though one were cherished and loved in these rejections emails, a feeling which demands carefully calibrated but hollow praise and useless platitudes about how impossible the whole situation is.

- As a member of the hiring committee and the English Department at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, I would like to apologize to you all about the message that HR automatically generated and sent to many of you. We truly had no idea that such a message would be distributed, and when it was brought to our attention, we were outraged. This college and the department will be a waste of your time. The English department at Sewanee has not hired a person of color for nearly 150 years. Such is the case with the majority of the liberal arts programs. This is a racist department and a racist school. (You might also run in to a few locals working at that Inn and might experience racism from them too. One of the people working at the Inn deliberately gave me wrong information to cause me delay for a meeting.) The only reason you will be short-listed here is so that they can fill the EEOC form. Even if your research and teaching are way superior to the next white guy in line, you will NOT be hired. White privilege here runs deeper than that valley surrounding the school. If you are short-listed here be warned that you will not be hired. Either use the experience to learn how campus visits happen or simply do not bother to apply at all to this school. - No, not here either (2/17). I wonder if the SC knows how obscene this is? Maybe they've never done a search or never done one in this market, but BASIC etiquette (I know from too much time on the market and now some time on the other side) is that you ONLY send emails like this to a SMALL, preselected group (usually smaller than MLA) that you are ready to move on. If this was a general email, the committee is either clueless or sadistic. - Agree with the previous poster about the obscenity of this. Sadly, this kind of clueless behavior seems to be the norm. I try to remember that most of the people running these searches would never have jobs if they were "competing" in this abysmal market. I think many of them know that (although they'd never admit it), and it scares them. Just like an immature jerk on a dating website, they entice, yo-yo, and ghost. It's often really creepy how these people behave, especially when they start talking about "fit" as the relationship progresses past the hotel interview.
