  • I first saw it here. I'm not sure it was posted anywhere other than their own HR site! It's "open until filled" ad, though, so you ought to be able to apply still.
  • I am writing this as the search chair: The Dean's office got a bit ahead of itself with the 2/28 initial application review date. NOTES AND QUERIES:

  • What is a "statement of Scholarly Interests"? Is this a research plan (inclunding funding applications, articles, etc), or is this a place where you elaborate on current and future projects? And how lond should this document be? I hope someone doesn't mind helping :/ I haven't produced one before.
  • I'm assuming it's a cover letter.
  • I've applied for several jobs at CUNY schools, and I've never been able to figure this one out. It doesn't help that they're website is really bad. This time I used the email they provided, and sent a cover letter, CV, and research statement.
  • Somebody in your department should be able to help you with the research statement, but I found this advice useful: http://theprofessorisin.com/2012/08/30/dr-karens-rules-of-the-research-statement/
  • “. . . survey of British and American literatures ranging from the middle ages through the early nineteenth century.” Hmmm, which medieval American author should I mention in my teaching statement? ;)
  • Update 12/12: I'm one of the requests for additional materials. According to the e-mail, they have just started reviewing applications, so I'd expect to see a number more requests over the next couple of weeks. Next round (Skype interviews) to be scheduled "well after MLA."
  • Question for above poster. First, thank you for the information. Then, was it clear from the email whether they meant the Skype interviews would be scheduled to TAKE PLACE after MLA (but be scheduled before MLA) or would actually themselves not be scheduled until "well after MLA"? I.e., are they imagining this as a job search that won't kick into gear until the MLA round is over?
  • I am not the above poster, but am the other person (of the 2 listed) that posted about getting the RFAM. After re-reading the e-mail, it does appear that they mean to say they will be scheduling interviews after MLA.
  • Thank you (from above question poster) for sharing this information. I am wondering now if that really was the only round of material gathering, though...No one else seems to have heard anything...Good luck!
  • Who knows what schedule they're working on. This year has really forced me to confront the fact that it *truly* is all about fit, as they say, however much we might want it to be about merit. GL to you, too.

NOTES AND QUERIES:

  • NOTE: while ad is extant at InsideHigherEd, this job does not yet appear at Spelman HR site (10/26/14)
  • 11/01/14: Link to apply is now available.
  • 12/11/14: My application has disappeared from their server; when I login, it says I have never applied for a job there?  I realize they scheduled interviews today so they could've deleted applications, but this still seems odd to me.  Is this happening to anyone else?  The application appeared and said "Under Review" this morning, so I'm afraid I accidentally unapplied.  (Not that it matters this late in the game; I'm just curious if anyone else is having this problem.)
  • 12/11/14: I can still see my application, but it doesn't say "under review" and never did - it just indicates that the position is open and has a blank space under "interview scheduled." (x2)
  • 1/12/15: this ad has reappeared on InsideHigherEd. Does anyone know why?
  • Any word about campus visits from those who interviewed?
  • I've been wondering this, too. I interviewed and haven't heard anything, but I've also noticed there are very few updates re: campus interviews on the wiki. Either schools are really taking their sweet time, or successful candidates aren't posting.
  • Spelman has already scheduled their campus visits. Or at least some of them.
  • To the person above--how did you find out? Do you know how many they invited from MLA?
  • A colleague was notified for a campus visit. And, no clue! I have no idea where they are in their search.
  • Any updates on this search? 2/13
  • An offer was made and accepted last week. 2/16

NOTES AND QUERIES:

  • (12/19) Updates?
  • I emailed two days ago to ask the status of the search and have not had a response.
  • Poke around on their site. Very likely an inside hire.
  • Just received an email (1/12) saying that they will be contacting applicants for next steps soon.
  • This search has not been conducted in a professional manner. They have repeatedly violated the timeline communicated to applicants. Who knows if it's going to their visiting Romanticist whose spouse is in the department. What kind of R1 program cannot get their act together to interview candidates at MLA?
  • If they do intend--and always did--to hire the spouse then it makes sense they didn't go to the MLA. Very likely they have HR policies they have to follow that mandate they interview a field of candidates. So while the department might want to just hire the spouse and be done with it, they have to follow administrative regulations. It sounds like they are not responding to emails and are dragging their feet to send as strong a signal of discouragement that they can. That's small comfort I'm sure (and who knows what will happen with any search) but it does not seem like they are notenthusiastic in pursuing this search and that is usually a sign.

NOTES AND QUERIES:

-Did this request actually happen? I find it odd that the header got changed with no note in the body of the listing. Moreover, the fact that the advertisement does not specify between Skype or MLA, and neither does the new heading, seems suspect to me....

Something strange does seem to be up here. What are the odds that there is just one interview offered? Has no one else heard from this school? 12/8 is also very close to the closing date for applications. Perhaps they had a single person in mind for this from the beginning.

Thank you! I'm just saying, usually requests go up, even for jobs with fewer applicants, showing 2-3 people having gotten a request. This one just seemed fishy to me.

  • -Yes, it actually happened. What would be the point in lying about it? They are scheduling MLA and Skype interviews.
  • -Never underestimate the power of denial
  • -Anyone heard if they've scheduled campus interviews yet? (1/23)

NOTES:

  • Has anyone had any recent contact w/ infor re: when interviews might be scheduled?

  • (curiously, MLA JIL version of ad posted on 11/28 suggests Nov. 15 as deadline, but Dec. 13 deadline stated at UVU application page seems more reliable, given late posting)
  • I cannot add my recommenders' e-mails to the application. The system keeps telling me that these e-mail addresses are invalid. Consequently, I cannot complete my application.
  • I did not have this problem. However, I could not figure out how to get it to send e-mails to my recommenders, gave up, and sent my letters to the search committee chair via Interfolio.
  • The HR system is set up rather dumb, but it does work. The 2nd screen ('attach documents') gives you the option to upload three letters of rec as 'optional documents.' If you're like me and all your letters are confidential and house at Interfolio, that presents a problem. However, if you keep going, one of the final screens will give you the opportunity to enter your referees' information. For the email address, if you use Interfolio, just cut and paste the unique email address that Interfolio creates for each letter (to get this email address, login to Interfolio, click on 'documents,' then click on each letter -- it's at the bottom of the pop up bubble). It should work. That said, I did have an exchange with the search committee chair about this issue before I figured it all out, and he indicated that letters sent directly to him via Interfolio are OK too.

Is the above change beside the school's name saying "ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUESTED" meant to reflect an additional material request to the one made on 10/29? If it is not it needs to be removed.

  • My impression is that the Add Mat tag in the header is so that one can see how far along each search committee is when looking at the TOC. When the committee schedules MLA interviews the tag would be updated to reflect that, and when campus visits, again. I'm pretty sure it was how it was done last year and years before.
  • If someone receives a new additional materials request s/he would mark a second date in the space above. Some comittees go through the stack bit by bit and make several additional materials requests. But for some comittees the first request does mean that those without a request have generally been passed over.

  • I sincerely hope that this went the current contract faculty member. It is terrible to imagine that someone would give up 2 years of their life and move halfway across the country, only to then lose their job. This madness needs to stop. We need to start valuing the labour of teaching and service paid.

NOTES:

  • Wow. There is something really suspicious about this job posting. Two years back they advertised for a visiting position in Victorian literature, and as evidenced by the dept’s faculty listing, they found someone for the limited appointment. But now they switch gears and decide to hire a Romanticist? I can’t help but feel like this is a very callous attempt at cutting out the current adjunct. This economic climate brings out the worst in hiring committees!
  • If they ran a search for Victorian literature everyone would be up in arms that the game is rigged in favor of the inside candidate with callous disregard of all those who take the time to apply!
  • Two years back they advertised for 19th-Century British Literature (a year before Monmouth in NJ hired in Victorian Literature). Although it is perhaps true that 19th-Century positions go to Victorians it is also possible this particular VAP went to a Romanticist and that has caused them to emphasize that for the new TT search.
  • Yes, my mistake. The position was advertised as a 19thC position 2 years ago. However, I still feel awful for the current VAP, who is a Victorianist (British and American, or perhaps transatlantic). FYI, I have no vested interest in this position. I am simply an observer who has noticed over recent years the increasing exploitation of adjuncts and sessionals. So many schools take advantage of candidates' desperation, asking them to give them X years of services, causing untold stress on the candidates' personal and professional lives. But then these same schools cut the VAPs loose without any sense of moral obligation or guilt. People get used and abused in this system. It stinks.
  • As someone who had the exact situation you describe happen to them I totally understand. My thinking was that they had hired a Romanticist and were nicely emphasizing that for the TT. If their hire was a Victorianist (and I don't doubt you here) then that does seem pretty odd.
  • I don't know anything about this specific situation, but it's worth pointing out the possibility that things aren't working out perfectly with the current VAP, hence the change in direction. You just never know what's going on in a department, so I'm not sure we should jump to the conclusion that this one is mean-spirited and exploitative...though I second everything said here about the general tendency to exploit adjunct and VAP labor.
  • According to Interfolio, this position is closed. Would have been nice to know before I wasted time crafting an application.
  • 11/07/14: I believe you can still apply. The MLA JIL ad offers two options for applications (also note extended deadline): "Please submit letter of application, vita, evidence of teaching excellence, statement of teaching philosophy, unofficial transcripts, and three letters of recommendation by email to Marlo Belschner, Chair English Search at facultysearch@monmouthcollege.edu or through Interfolio's ByCommittee. Review of applications will begin Monday, December 1, 2014 and continue until the position is filled. Interviews will be held at MLA."
  • 11/10/14: I had the same problem, but I found that if you go to Interfolio, begin a "New Delivery," and enter the name of the college, a link will pop up for that position. Click on the link, upload your docs, and submit the application. Not sure what the problem is--I e-mailed the search chair about it, and she seemed confused as well--but that's the workaround.

NOTES:

Has anyone noticed that the position status changed from "reviewing applications" to "position closed" on Interfolio? According to Interfolio, when a position is closed, evaluators can no longer review candidates' dossiers. (11/7) x3

  • That's strange - from what I could find online, interfolio status is only supposed to change to "position closed" once an offer has been made or the search has been called off, neither of which seems remotely likely in this case.
  • I don't think this is a worry, or maybe there's just been a misunderstanding; I'm chairing a different search at a different institution, and we are using Interfolio. Our position has shown as "closed" ever since the deadline hit, but all of us have access and are evaluating the materials submitted. As far as I have seen, "closed" means "no longer accepting applications," not "position is filled" or "search is over."
  • A friend involved with the search has told me that the committee's still in the middle of reading applications. Interfolio's just being odd.
  • Given their weather woes, I am quite impressed that a department in Boston was already able to complete their search.
  • Re: question above as to "position filled" header, first-hand information from them on 2/17.

  • - (12/5/14) Surely they've already asked for additional materials and have interviews lined up since they're going to MLA, right?
  • - Not necessarily. There are cases in which search committees contact candidates just right after Christmas (of course, this is not an ideal scenario, but what can one do?)
  • -Also, since the search requested most materials up front, they've got more time since they don't need to request additional materials and review them.
  • - Has anyone else received an interview request? I haven't received the rejection letter yet, but also no word about an interview.
  • - Does anyone know if campus interviews have been scheduled? Thanks.
  • Same as above; do people know of anyone who has been contacted for a campus interview? Seems like it's getting a little late, but I can't remember what they said their schedule was after the MLA interview (1/23).  News on any front would be helpful.
  • I also interviewed and haven't heard anything -- they were interviewing 12 people at MLA and I thought they said decisions would be in 1-2 weeks? (Unless my foggy interview brain misunderstood the timeline.) Also been hoping against hope here! (1/23)
  • I think that they scheduled campus visits.
  • Could you tell us why you think so? (1/23)
