Allen University: Assistant Professor of English[]

Allen University is seeking applicants to fill a full-time position at the rank of assistant professor beginning August 2020.  Responsibilities include teaching first-year composition and upper division courses relevant to the applicant’s field of research. Candidates with a background in rhetoric/composition or communications are particularly encouraged to apply, especially those with experience teaching new media. The position also requires advising students and service on university committees.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should have completed a PhD in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a related field by August 1, 2020.  ABD will be considered. The normal teaching load is 5/5, so applicants must have a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level. About the position

The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film at Brock University invites applications for a full time tenure track position in Media and Communication Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2020. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film offers four interdisciplinary undergraduate programs. Two of these programs — Business Communication and Media & Communication — are home to 650 majors. The BA in Business Communication is offered in collaboration with the Goodman School of Business.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a PhD in communication, media studies, business, or a related discipline and a strong record of research and teaching that addresses digital technologies and practices at the intersection of business communication and media industries. Expertise in the areas of digital platforms and media analytics is of particular interest. Experience with online, blended, and applied/experiential pedagogy would be an asset.

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The English Department at Baruch College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for two full-time lecturer positions in Writing to begin September 2020. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our mission of educating one of the most diverse student bodies in the U.S. Successful candidates will collaborate with an engaged full-time and adjunct writing faculty to design and teach courses in first-year writing. This position represents an investment by the College to increase student contact with full-time faculty during students' crucial first year.

Through student-centered pedagogy, innovative curriculum design, co-curricular programs and student mentoring, our First-Year Writing Program faculty contribute to the College's first-year student retention and academic success rates. In addition, lecturer writing faculty will have the opportunity to work with colleagues and the Writing Program Director to further develop a shared first year text implemented in fall 2019 and accompanying teaching resources, as well, as to design, implement, and assess specialized curriculum and faculty training for SEEK first-year writing course, Learning Communities, and multilingual and multimodal composition.

Lecturer faculty teach a 24-hour course load. Courses in the First-Year Writing sequence (English 2100 and 2150) are 4-credit hours, so teaching responsibilities entail three courses per term, with an average of 75 students total. Taking on administrative or other college service positions with reassigned time attached, as available, can reduce teaching responsibilities.

Lecturer faculty makes a substantial contribution to the Writing Program at the College through participation in Writing Program assessment, curriculum design, and faculty mentoring. Lecturer faculty participate as full faculty members of the English Department, the College, and the University. Service may include serving on committees and contributing to projects and programs, especially those related to teaching and learning. Promotion to a Certificate of Continuous Employment (tenure-like status) is possible after the fifth year based on teaching excellence.

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates who hold an MFA or a MA in Rhetoric and Composition, English, English Education, or equivalent field are encouraged to apply (an MFA or MA in these fields is required). Candidates with additional graduate coursework or degrees will be considered. Please note that the lecturer position does not require nor consider for re-appointment or promotion a scholarly, research, or publishing agenda. Rather, re-appointment and promotion are based on teaching success. Participating in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and writing studies and pedagogy conferences is encouraged, and lecturer faculty are eligible for professional development and travel funds.

Candidates for Full-Time Lecturer in Writing Position, should have demonstrated ability in the following:

- Teaching students of diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, and educational backgrounds
- Creative curriculum and assignment design in research-based academic writing at the post-secondary level
- Active, student-centered pedagogy and significant student mentoring experience
- Use of technology to support teaching and learning
- Excellent teaching and peer classroom evaluations

At least three years of demonstrated, successful experience teaching first-year composition at the college level.

With this search, we are particularly looking for candidates who have the following specialized experience and demonstrated knowledge:

Commitment to Diversity. Teaching a diverse student body. Baruch faculty should have a strong understanding of and experience with the literacy practices of multilingual student, incorporating diverse rhetoric’s and literatures in their courses as well as pedagogical practices informed by translingual and multilingual composition theories.

Digital Literacy and Rhetoric. Since our second semester writing courses include a multimodal composing requirement and given the importance of digital rhetoric knowledge in our students' lives, lecturer faculty in the Writing Program should show evidence of creative use of digital platforms and multimodal composing in their courses.

The English Department at Baruch College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor line with a focus in Digital Media. The successful candidate will serve as the Associate Director of First-Year Writing beginning August 26, 2020.

The Associate Director of Composition will serve as a faculty administrator with reduced teaching responsibilities, collaborating with the Writing Program Director, other faculty, and Graduate Writing Fellows on curriculum development, personnel management, professional development, assessment, program research initiatives, and program operations. We especially seek candidates who focus on digital media in their research and teaching and who can contribute to a burgeoning concentration in rhetoric, writing, and linguistics in the department by developing and teaching courses in such areas as digital humanities, multimodal composing, advanced editing, and digital storytelling. 

Tenure-track and tenured faculty teach 18 hours per academic year. Pre-tenure faculty are awarded a significant amount of reassigned time for the first five years and reduced teaching responsibilities, and faculty who hold administrative positions are granted additional reassigned time.

The Department of Writing and Rhetoric (DWR) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is seeking an experienced scholar administrator to direct its undergraduate degree programs (including a major or B.A., minor, and undergraduate certificate). This is a 9-month position with a typical teaching load of 1/1 that includes reassigned time for administrative duties. An administrative stipend is provided to support the work of the programs in summer terms. Teaching responsibilities will typically include upper-division courses in writing and rhetoric studies, graduate courses, and occasional first-year writing courses. Administrative duties will include overseeing the following as they relate to undergraduate degree programs:

  • Scheduling and staffing of upper-division courses;
  • Course and curriculum changes or additions;
  • Outreach, marketing, and student recruitment;
  • Advising processes and support, including for new student orientation;
  • Program assessment;
  • Faculty development;
  • Co-curricular opportunities (e.g., events, publications, Honors in the Major, etc.);
  • Alignment with college and university goals (e.g., around student engagement and high-impact learning).

The coordinator is supported by a programmatic team that currently includes a staff member with shared responsibilities for the composition, undergraduate, and graduate programs; two faculty academic advisors or coordinators; and a faculty member supporting high-impact practices. The coordinator will work closely with the department chair, the undergraduate programmatic team and faculty committee, and other program directors and coordinators in the department to support and enhance the writing experience and success of UCF students.

DWR is a vibrant, independent department. It employs 14 tenure-earning Rhetoric and Composition faculty members, 26 instructors and lecturers, and 17 graduate teaching assistants in its ongoing efforts to support comprehensive, vertical writing instruction that includes an award-winning first-year composition program; an undergraduate major (B.A.) in Writing & Rhetoric, minor, and certificate; a M.A. in Rhetoric & Composition and graduate certificate in professional writing, and; a Center for Writing Excellence that includes the University Writing Center and the Writing Across the Curriculum Program. The department’s upper-division programs feature, among other elements, an undergraduate research journal; a student-edited-and-produced online magazine; an annual Knights Write Symposium; several undergraduate student organizations; support for student internships and e-portfolio creation; courses designated with service-learning, research, and integrative learning emphases, and curricular threads that include professional writing and editing, civic and cultural rhetoric, and digital and multimodal communication.

  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or related field from an accredited institution;
  • At least four years of experience teaching college-level writing and rhetoric, including some upper-division courses;
  • Substantial experience advising students (which can include advising as an instructor);
  • A record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service/leadership commensurate with a tenured appointment, pending a successful tenure vote and approval by the Board of Trustees;
  • At least two years of significant experience serving in some administrative capacity for a program;
  • Experience with course and curriculum development;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A nationally recognized record of scholarship in some area(s) of writing, rhetoric, and literacy, ideally building on one or more of the department’s research strengths or addressing one of our gaps or needs;
  • At least two years of experience directing an academic program;
  • Experience in marketing and growing a program, and a commitment to recruiting diverse student populations;
  • Expertise and interest in using digital media in writing and rhetoric pedagogy and developing innovative online and hybrid writing courses and program-level curricula;
  • A record of facilitating professional development opportunities for faculty, particularly those new to teaching upper-division courses;
  • A demonstrated commitment to curriculum revision in response to assessment results, students’ changing needs, and the scholarship of the field.

Biola University invites applications for an open-rank, full-time, tenure-track position as English Department faculty member and Co-Director of the English Writing Program (WPA), to begin in August 2020.

Department Background: The English Department houses 11 tenure-line faculty members, with responsibilities ranging from literature and language instruction to writing center and core curriculum work. The department offers bachelor’s degrees in English with concentrations in Literature, Secondary Education, and Creative Writing. The department is also home to 10 adjunct instructors who teach composition and other courses in the University’s Core Curriculum. Writing in the Core operates vertically, with a first-year WAC writing course, a second-year writing-intensive literature course, and a third-year WID writing course. The English Writing Program (EWP) is nested within the English Department, which in turn is housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, as well as experience creating and supporting high-impact practices.

Job Duties: This faculty member will teach in the Core and the English major programs, participate in departmental, school, and university service, and conduct research and publish in the discipline. Additionally, the English Department functions under a collaborative leadership model, where individual directors meet and provide cross-programmatic support to one another. As co-director of the writing program, the person hired into the position will work collaboratively to:

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: Experience administering writing courses in a University Core Program, or demonstrated potential for such work in writing program administration. The Rhetoric and Writing Studies Program, housed within Appalachian State University’s Department of English, invites applications for one tenure-track position at the rank of assistant, advanced assistant, or associate professor. ENG 185/6: “Writing & Inquiry in the Liberal Arts” introduces students to the range of writing and inquiry they will encounter as part of their liberal arts education, engaging them with the role of writing in inquiry. It is designed to introduce students to rhetorical principles for writing, including disciplinarity as an important element of academic rhetorical situations and exposing them to writing across a range of disciplines and purposes. Using inquiry-based approaches, the course introduces students how to ask good questions about new writing situations and unfamiliar genres as well as strategies and tools for developing, revising, and editing their writing. As a Verto Field Instructor, you will bring the course alive for students through a dynamic combination of classroom instruction and experiential field work. High-level syllabi are designed by Course Directors and approved by our school of record, Richard Bland College, but there should be opportunity for collaboration on how the course comes together in the program location. This would include meeting virtually with the Course Director and our in-country partners to  discuss the hands-on projects, arranged expert guest speakers sessions, and community-based initiatives that will form the experiential portion of the course.

During the semester you’ll teach in a classroom setting (though not a typical one!) and accompany your students on excursions designed to connect to course content. You’ll meet with the Course Director bi-weekly to discuss cohort progress and resolve any challenges that might arise. Your Course Director will help ensure unity across instructors, offer feedback and coaching, and provide course materials to ease the burden of preparing for class while in the field.

While this position is an academic position, the ideal candidate will be a team player, ready and willing to jump in and assist where necessary to support students.


Course Description:

Rhetoric & Composition

This course is designed to strengthen students’ writing mechanics and prepare students for the demands of academic writing. This course has been designed to develop writing and rhetoric skills and will leverage core content explored through other Verto courses and immersive fieldwork.

Students will use their experiences from other courses and program activities during the semester to contextualize the importance of strong academic writing, develop strong academic prose, and explore the relationship between language and rhetoric. This course includes a combination of faculty-led seminars and writing workshops.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide an engaging classroom experience through a combination of lectures and structured academic activities.
  • Engage with students and help them connect the coursework to what they are experiencing in the field.
  • Collaborate with a dynamic team of Program Leaders, Field Instructors, Academic Success Coordinators, Regional Managers, and in country partners.
  • Facilitate coursework in compliance with credit requirements as set by the Course Director.
  • Maintain flexibility with curriculum as dictated by a changing travel itinerary.

  • Ph.D. preferred in technical communication or a related field at the time of appointment
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness
  • Commitment to meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities
  • Strong evidence of the promise of scholarly research and publications
  • Two (2) or more years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level, preferably in technical writing
  • Experience teaching on-line and face-to-face

The Department of English at Virginia Tech invites applications for an Instructor position in Professional and Technical Writing to begin August 2020. Teaching load is 4/4. Responsibilities include teaching multi-section technical writing courses and participation in the department’s faculty development activities. Instructors are expected to work well with students from diverse backgrounds and to support the goals and methods of multi- section courses. Instructors are not required to serve on committees or in advising, but they may do so voluntarily. The appointment is for one year. The department gives priority to faculty who have served as instructors on restricted contracts should openings be available in subsequent years. Required qualifications: Master’s degree in professional and technical writing or related field, or a Master’s degree with relevant industry or teaching experience. Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching technical writing; experience with on-line writing instruction; and demonstrated ability to work well with diverse constituents.
