We are looking for an exciting scholar and teacher of the literature and culture of the long 18th century. Areas to be covered will include Restoration and Augustan literatures, and literature in the age of Empire, with a specialisation in one or more of the following fields: the rise of the novel, trans-Atlantic Victorian literature, travel narratives. Interest and expertise in Victorian and/or Romantic poetry would be a plus. Classes to be offered will include Literature in the Age of Empire as well as more specialized classes according to the candidate's expertise. Candidates will need to have the Ph.D in hand by the time of joining Ashoka. Teaching experience pointing to a vibrant, dialogic, and fascinating classroom pedagogy would be welcome. The Arts and Humanities Division at Babson College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position specializing in an area of Early Modern Literature c.1500 to 1800. Areas of specialization may include but are not limited to literature of the long 18th century, global Shakespeare, world literatures, and transatlantic literary studies. We seek to hire an assistant professor with a Ph.D. in early modern literature, with a secondary interest of her or his choice. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring global approaches to their teaching and scholarship, and we value engagement with issues of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality.

Candidates must have completed their doctorate by the time of appointment. They must demonstrate teaching excellence and evidence of scholarly promise. Beyond teaching, duties include research as well as professional service within the College and for one’s professional community. The position starts on September 1, 2017 with a normal teaching load of 4 courses per year in the pre-tenure years, and 5 courses per year thereafter, with opportunities for research support.

Candidates must be prepared to teach literature and culture to non-majors who are enrolled in both liberal arts and management courses throughout their four undergraduate years. Candidates must be qualified and willing to teach in our Foundation Program, which includes both our Rhetoric courses and the interdisciplinary liberal arts required Foundation course. Foundation courses thematically explore the challenges that individuals face as they struggle to exercise ethical agency in midst of changing social, cultural, political, economic, historical, and aesthetic and representational structures. The Department of Western Languages and Literatures at Bogazici University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position to be filled by a foreign national in American and British Transatlantic literature in the long-eighteenth century.

Responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester in a variety of survey courses in British and American literature as well as upper-division BA, MA and PhD courses in one's specialty; thesis supervision at the undergraduate and graduate levels; administrative duties. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to integrate active scholarship with excellent teaching.

  • This is a VERY specific list of desired expertises, and, lo and behold, they've got a non-tenure track visitor who meets all the criteria. 
  • I typically discourage this sort of worry, given the actual record on "inside hires," but the specificity of this posting is truly unlike anything I've seen in eighteenth-century jobs in past years. Certainly not your typical "subspecialty" category language here.
  • Yes, I'm usually skeptical as well. But the reason I pointed this out is that it's so egregious. The listing on higheredjobs doesn't contain the specialization language (that's practically taken from a dissertation title). I don't know if they had second thoughts or whether the version we have here was tampered with. There might be an earlier version up on highered that I missed. I think we should apply anyway.
  • This seems like a genuine inside hire. Few really ever are, even if there is an insider. Most times inside hires fail. Everyone should apply.

The typical teaching load is 3/3 (12 units per semester), with correspondingly reasonable service and research expectations. We seek an innovative and dedicated teacher/scholar who can contribute in various ways to our flexible curriculum and diverse course offerings. University of New Hampshire (NH) - Postdoctoral Research Associate / Managing Editor - Eighteenth-Century Studies - SKYPE INTERVIEW SCHEDULED[]

Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will be Managing Editor/Copyeditor of the academic journal Eighteenth-Century Studies, to commence June 1, 2017. The Managing Editor/Copyeditor will help set the research agenda for eighteenth-century studies at UNH and beyond for the next generation of scholarship by working with key scholars on the journal. The post-holder will work closely with the editor, the UNH 18th-century Interdisciplinary seminar, and the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS). The Managing Editor/Copyeditor will help design the journal's issues by surveying cutting-edge work in the field broadly conceived and make suggestions for areas of future research and special issues of the journal. Responsibilities include office management, receiving and cataloging all manuscripts submitted to the journal, passing the manuscripts on to the editor to decide whether to send them out for peer review, ensuring that the peer reviews come in in a timely fashion, and discussing with the editor whether to accept, reject, ask for revision, or send out for a third review. Responsibilities also include copy editing accepted manuscripts and proposing in which issue the articles should appear. The post-holder will be encouraged to participate in the larger intellectual community of the UNH College of Liberal Arts, the university as a whole (including the UNH 18th-Century Interdisciplinary Seminar), and other regional academic institutions.

We are searching for candidates who possess excellent organizational and administrative skills; experience as an administrative assistant or in other office roles a plus. The managing editor must also be experienced in copyediting manuscripts for publication. Minimum qualification is a Ph.D. in a discipline within or adjoining the long eighteenth-century period in order to be acquainted with the subject matter and the work of the experts capable of peer-reviewing manuscripts. 40 hours/week. This is a one-year renewable postdoctoral position.
