• Any word that their 18th century prof. is leaving? Or is this more of a 19th century search? Seems odd to maintain two 18th century experts at a school of this size, while lacking a Victorianist. [Answer: Yes, our 18th-century professor is retiring. We also lost our Victorianist a few years ago and were unable to replace that position, hence the large net cast by this job posting].

  • The request for additional materials asks that a teaching statement and letters be sent as a single PDF to the Chair and CC'ed to the secretary. I just spoke with Interfolio, and apparently others have called them to ask about CC'ing. It is not possible. Is everyone else going to send two separate Interfolio deliveries (and pay twice)?
  • I realized the same thing. Decided to send two separate emails, hence two payments, too.

Any progress on this search?

  • I was wondering the same.

NOTES:

  • Set aside a good 4-6 hours to complete the interminable online application. (10/21)
  • Not only is it interminable but it demands that one parcel out elements from the cover letter, CV, teaching and research statement, etc, etc, into truly strange categories. Eg: prepare complete and separate statements on your “effective communication style and excellent interpersonal skills” and “Ability to develop and use effective, flexible and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment” and “Ability to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to support teaching and learning” and “Ability to contribute to the assurance of academic quality and standards” and “Ability to support the diverse academic and personal needs of individual students” and “Ability to engage in innovation, knowledge construction and knowledge dissemination”... seriously, there are twenty, TWENTY, different categories of such statements required. Then they have the temerity to ask you to upload a CV and cover letter!

What on earth was the search committee thinking with clusterfuck of an application...

  • For non-UK applicants who may not know this: Edge Hill is one of the UK's newest universities, which usually means a lot of teaching and very little research funding/time. This is not a reflection on the quality of Edge Hill's degrees, of course.

NOTES:

  • NOTE: the search committee has set up its Interfolio account so that you must submit your application in paper format. I'd recommend to everyone interested in applying that you complete your application as much in advance of the Dec. 1 deadline as possible.
  • No news on this front yet? Anyone know if UoL is planning to conduct interviews at the MLA?
  • Perhaps UoL will conduct Skype interviews soon?
  • I'm still waiting to hear as well. Mysterious!
  • There was this concerning news last night. Jindal is working to cut $300mil from higher education funding. I wonder if the committee is taking it slow until they know more about the financial situation. http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2015/01/college_university_closures_mi.html
  • In response to my query on this subject, the chair indicated that "the search committee is still evaluating applications" and that they "hope to have more information in a few weeks." (1/19)
  • Thanks for the update. Much appreciated.
  • I am confused by the department's response if someone has already posted a phone interview.
  • Me too. The search chair confirmed for me on 1/19 that they "are still evaluating applications", as I wrote above. So the 1/16 backdating for a phone interview request is strange.
