Any area of research specialization within this field will be considered, but the department seeks a candidate who is prepared to teach a wide variety of courses, including History of the English Language. PhD required. The typical teaching load is twelve hours per semester, including graduate and undergraduate courses in literature and freshman composition. The ability to teach courses in literature by women writers is desirable. We are especially interested in candidates who can develop innovative courses for our evolving curriculum.

  • Search Committee Chair, here. Obviously, the timing of this search is a bit strange: not many schools run TT searches that begin in late April. But, we had one of our Brit Lit profs announce her departure recently, so we have begun this search ASAP (as soon as we got through the various steps to receive official approval for the search). You will notice the ad says "review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled." I never quite knew what this sort of language meant when I was on the job market, but in this case we plan to move as quickly as possible with the search. We understand many of you are nearing the end of your semester--a particularly busy time for us all--but please do try to submit application materials as promptly as is feasible (the search will be using Interfolio's ByCommittee system, so you will need to wait for the JIL ad to appear, then apply through the Interfolio link).   • Is anyone planning on messaging the department mentioning the mix up (about electronic vs. snailmail)? My application certainly won't be there by the due date now.
  • I'm in the same situation as above, caught off guard a few days ago by the realization that the "apply through interfolio" link did not involve an electronic submission, without enough time for the materials to arrive by deadline (not sure how one could anticipate the snailmail until getting to the final step). I sent it by mail, but I also just went ahead and emailed the department chair directly (using interfolio) attaching all my materials.
  • November 4th is the postmark deadline, so as long as you sent everything by November 4th, all should be fine.

Harvard University - 18th c. Lit. - TT Asst. Prof. - OFFER MADE[]

English: The Harvard University Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the literature of the eighteenth century. While the emphasis is on early fiction and the novel, including precursors of eighteenth-century fiction and broad acquaintance with English fiction through the early nineteenth century, the application will be strengthened if the candidate can demonstrate knowledge and teaching ability in several genres of the long eighteenth century covering the Restoration, English Enlightenment, and transition to Romanticism. Both breadth and expertise are desired. The appointment is expected to be effective July 1, 2014, and at the rank of assistant professor. A doctorate or terminal degree is required by the time the appointment begins. The successful applicant will have a strong doctoral record and should show promise of excellence in scholarship, along with a strong commitment to teaching in a variety of areas. Those in serious consideration for the position will be expected to submit in late November or early December the entire dissertation or as much of it as is completed (or, alternatively, a book-length publication). The position requires teaching four courses during the regular academic year.

We seek a specialist in British literature of the long eighteenth century to teach in the undergraduate major and the Graduate Program in Literature and Criticism (M.A. and Ph.D.).

The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of the field and will be able to contribute to the graduate program through the teaching of theory, criticism, and pedagogy. Applicants must also be prepared to teach undergraduate writing and introductory literature courses, to advise majors, and to participate in departmental governance.

The regular doctoral program in Literature and Criticism is augmented by an intensive summers-only program which enrolls current college teachers; the program takes pride in the integration of theory, applied pedagogy, and supportive mentoring. To qualify for graduate teaching, candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship, including relevant publication and professional activity.

Position Qualifications: Ph.D. must be in hand at the time of employment. Additional expertise in such areas as Renaissance, Romanticism, digital humanities, transatlantic studies, the novel, or across genres is also desirable. Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview process, which may include both a scholarly talk and a teaching demonstration.

Would someone maybe move the post-MLA-deadline jobs to the top? It would be easier to see that way and I'm guessing that by now most people who are coming back here are looking to see if there are any late breaking jobs, since most of the jobs have scheduled campus visits. I would do it myself but am intimidated by making large structural changes.

Sorry guys. I wasn't sure how to edit this onto the page, but there's a job at Calgary looking for a 'digital humanist' with an 18th or 19th century specialization. Application due Nov. 15th. If anyone wants to add it to the page, I'm sure others in here will appreciate it. I don't have the PDF for the ad, but it seems to have made it onto the digital humanities page, so you can copy the ad from there. Obviously, I'm not a digital humanist otherwise I'd know how to do it myself.

Nov 10, 2013: Is there a reason that the RSS updates are not showing up on the actual page itself? I'm still about 2-3 days behind. I can see changes made on recent updates, but when I search the regular Restoration 18th C wiki, it's largely not updated to match. Glitch of some sort?

  • Usually, there is a bit of a lag with the RSS updates available at the top of the page (probably a slight glitch with Wikia, yes). If you use a third-party RSS reader to receive the page feed, however, there shouldn't be much of a lag. For what it's worth, the feed at the top of the page seems to be fully updated right now [11/11/13].
