The successful candidate will teach senior-level classes and graduate seminars in seventeenth-century English literature as well as lower-level classes in British literature and will also direct the dissertation and thesis research of graduate students. He or she will demonstrate a productive research agenda and maintain a strong publication record while also engaging in service to the department and university.

Required Qualifications: The Department of English seeks a dynamic scholar to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in seventeenth-century English literature. Candidates should have a strong research agenda and be an effective teacher, with the Ph.D. in hand at the start of the appointment.

The Beloit College Department of English invites applicants for two tenure-track positions to begin August 2018:

Primary expertise in 20th- or 21st-century ethnic American Literature.
Primary expertise in medieval and/or early modern non-dramatic British Literature.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of English offers its diverse student population a rich array of courses in literature, language, creative writing, and composition. The B.A. in English fosters an understanding and appreciation of 1) the major works of British, American, and global literature, including works by and about ethnic and cultural minorities and women, 2) the history and structure of the English language, and 3) the aims and processes of creative and critical writing. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach coursework in Medieval and Renaissance literature at all levels, emphasizing Shakespeare. All faculty are expected to teach coursework in composition and general education. Other coursework taught as assigned. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. in English (or Literature) at the time of appointment is required. Evidence of a record of scholarship (including dissertation) pertaining to Medieval and Renaissance literature, with specialization in Shakespeare, is required. Secondary emphasis in one or more of the following areas is required: composition and rhetoric, digital humanities, general education, global literature, or teacher preparation.

Dartmouth College (NH) - Tenured Professor of English in Shakespeare Studies/Early Modern Literature and Culture[]

The Department of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College invites applications for a tenured position in early modern literature and culture, with a focus on Shakespeare and renaissance theater, at the level of Professor or advanced Associate Professor, to begin on July 1, 2018. Core teaching responsibilities will involve courses in Shakespeare and in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century literature more generally. While we are interested in all subfields related to early modern literary studies, we especially encourage applicants whose research engages with contemporary critical/theoretical models and innovations; poetics and poetic theory; queer theory and gender studies; theater history, performance and the phenomenology of theater; ecocriticism; critical race studies; postcolonial approaches or the role of Shakespeare in world literature.

The Dartmouth Department of English and Creative Writing ranges across all periods of literary history and has a strong creative writing program. Responsibilities and Duties: We are seeking a tenure-line Assistant Professor of English to teach courses in medieval and early modern British literature. The Folger Shakespeare Library seeks to hire three post-doctoral fellows for a multi-year collaborative and cross-disciplinary research project entitled “Before ‘Farm to Table’: Early Modern Foodways and Cultures.” This is the inaugural project in the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Mellon Initiative in Collaborative Research. It is headquartered in the Folger Institute, whose mission is to foster vital research questions, gather knowledge communities, and stimulate collections-based research. The Folger Shakespeare Library is home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection and supports research on all aspects of British, European, and Atlantic world literary, cultural, political, religious, theatrical, and social history from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries. “Before ‘Farm to Table’: Early Modern Foodways and Cultures” will investigate the pervasiveness of food in everyday life as a window into early modern culture, addressing such issues as labor, freedom and enslavement, practical knowledge, ethics, and imagination. These perspectives from a pre-industrial world will shed light on critical post-industrial dilemmas and aspirations. The positions are renewable for three academic years (through June 2021).

Applicants must hold a recent (within 5 years) Ph.D. in early modern (c. 1450-1750) studies; specific disciplines may include art history, anthropology, food studies, history, literature, philosophy. A successful candidate will bring his or her own individual research to bear on collective decisions about projects in this innovative research initiative. The three post-doctoral fellows will work closely with the project’s co-directors and will be responsible for defining and pursuing research agendas, helping to select short-term fellows and other project associates, and creating scholarly and public programs as well as print and online products. We aim to assemble an interdisciplinary team of post-docs with a diversity of cognate interests and approaches, who will engage in independent and collaborative research, writing, and experimentation. Post-docs will share their findings in a variety of formats and with a variety of audiences, assist with organizing scholarly programs and public events at the Folger, and contribute to online digital projects and exhibitions. The three post-doctoral fellows will be considered employees of the Folger and will receive a generous salary of $5,416.67 per month (equivalent to 65K per year) and a comprehensive benefits package. Digital Research Fellow (one fellowship available): The Digital Research Fellow will be tasked with developing, building, and trialing a structure for accessing and researching texts, images, and metadata relating to the major themes of the project, with an emphasis on the Folger’s unique collection of food-related manuscripts. Working closely with co-directors and Folger stakeholders, the post-doc will help establish and implement editorial and mark-up conventions for creating a searchable corpus of food-related texts and images. The corpus will provide quantitative and qualitative data for the team’s innovative explorations of a wide range of issues in food pathways and cultures of the period through a variety of techniques, including data mining, data visualization, mapping, network analysis, and text analysis.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with technologies and standards used in digital humanities scholarship such as TEI markup, data visualization, text and network analysis, and common scripting languages, is required. Relevant experience in developing and leading digital humanities research projects is preferred. The position entails managing the organization’s financial operations and budget planning; supervising staff who maintain the website and membership databases, among other administrative duties; conference planning, including regional fundraising, site selection, negotiations with hotels, and special events planning; supporting subcommittee work and initiatives; and coordinating elections.

The directorship is a five-year position (renewable), with a start date of September 1, 2018.

We invite applications from full-time, non-contingent faculty (including academic administrators), with a strong preference for faculty with tenure. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and have significant administrative experience as well as scholarly expertise. All applications must include guarantee of financial backing from a host institution willing to serve as headquarters for the organization. The sponsoring institution must provide substantial teaching relief for the Executive Director, at least one full-time support staff (with benefits), office space, and equipment. The Executive Director receives a summer stipend from the SAA.
