The American University in Bulgaria invites applications for a professor of Early Modern British Literature. Secondary expertise in digital humanities, gender studies, and/or film is welcome. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in teaching both literature and composition at the undergraduate level.

Candidates will be expected to teach the freshman composition sequence, sophomore-level literature surveys in British and world literature, Shakespeare, and upper-division courses within their areas of specialization. As full-time faculty, instructors are expected to teach a minimum of three courses per semester, to participate in university and departmental service, and to publish within their fields. Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate the ways in which their teaching and scholarship will contribute to the ongoing mission of AUBG as a liberal arts institution furthering the advancement of democratic ideals in Eastern Europe.

The Arts and Humanities Division at Babson College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position specializing in an area of Early Modern Literature c.1500 to 1800. Areas of specialization may include but are not limited to literature of the long 18th century, global Shakespeare, world literatures, and transatlantic literary studies. We seek to hire an assistant professor with a Ph.D. in early modern literature, with a secondary interest of her or his choice. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring global approaches to their teaching and scholarship, and we value engagement with issues of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality.

Candidates must have completed their doctorate by the time of appointment. They must demonstrate teaching excellence and evidence of scholarly promise. Beyond teaching, duties include research as well as professional service within the College and for one’s professional community. The position starts on September 1, 2017 with a normal teaching load of 4 courses per year in the pre-tenure years, and 5 courses per year thereafter, with opportunities for research support.

Candidates must be prepared to teach literature and culture to non-majors who are enrolled in both liberal arts and management courses throughout their four undergraduate years. Candidates must be qualified and willing to teach in our Foundation Program, which includes both our Rhetoric courses and the interdisciplinary liberal arts required Foundation course. Foundation courses thematically explore the challenges that individuals face as they struggle to exercise ethical agency in midst of changing social, cultural, political, economic, historical, and aesthetic and representational structures. In addition to its liberal arts requirement, Babson College has a vibrant and growing arts scene, including its theatre-in-residence, the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, The Empty Space Theatre Company, and robust visual and literary arts exhibitions and productions. Responsibilities include teaching Shakespeare in a liberal arts context, as well as other courses in British literature and drama. The Department of English and Comparative Literature invites applications for a beginning tenure-track assistant professorship in early modern drama, 1500-1700. Broad knowledge of the dramatic canon, of the non-dramatic Renaissance, and fluency with current critical approaches desired. Its holdings include 42 million manuscripts, one million books, five million photographs, and over 100,000 works of art. The Ransom Center hosts 142,000 visitors annually, including undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, and members of the public. The Pforzheimer Curator provides curatorial support for the Center’s early book and manuscript holdings through the hand-press era, including the Carl H. Pforzheimer Library of English Literature. The Pforzheimer Library is internationally known for first and important editions of plays, poems, novels, essays, polemical writings, and translations of the most important English writers from 1475 to 1700, including Caxton, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, Marvell, Donne, Dryden, Congreve, Marlowe, and Bacon, among many others. The Pforzheimer Curator also provides curatorial support for other early book and manuscript holdings, including the Wrenn library, the Recusant collection, the Uzielli Aldine Press collection, and incunabula.

The Pforzheimer Curator will participate in a variety of interpretive activities (writing, exhibitions, lectures, and talks) that promote the teaching and research use of the Center’s early book and manuscript holdings and promote the greater understanding and appreciation of these collections. He or she will provide specialized reference support for researchers working with the Center’s early book and manuscript holdings and will contribute to the annual review of research fellowship applications. The Pforzheimer Curator will select books and manuscripts for the Pforzheimer Library, keeping in mind existing strengths, trends in scholarship, and classroom needs. He or she will work with Preservation & Conservation staff to establish treatment priorities and with Description & Access staff and Digital Collections staff to promote enhanced access to the collection by consulting on cataloging and access initiatives. The curator will contribute to the broader institutional mission and work of the Ransom Center by participating in regular meetings with the Center’s curatorial group, serving on Ransom Center committees, and collaborating with colleagues across the Center. He or she will represent the Ransom Center within professional and scholarly communities related to early book and manuscript culture and serve as a liaison with relevant faculty at The University of Texas at Austin.

Six Degrees of Francis Bacon is a digital reconstruction of the early modern social network that scholars and students can collaboratively expand, revise, curate, and critique. The successful candidate will likely have a PhD in History, English, Library and Information Science, or a related discipline with demonstrated experience in web development or digital humanities.

The fellow will be housed in the Department of English in the Dietrich College of Arts and Social Sciences and work with Associate Professor Christopher Warren, Principal Investigator of the Six Degrees of Francis Bacon project.   • Just a note that this is a "term adjunct" poisition. The hired candidate will be paid sessional rates (about $8000-9,000 CDN per course) without any kind of ancillary pay or benefits. Since they are only looking for 2 courses per term, this means around $32,000 - $36,000 CDN per year, without benefits. In short, unless you already live in the Kingston area and have another source of income, this job may not be financially feasible. Even if you do live in the Kingston area, it may be worth thinking carefully if you want to work in an institution that would hire you to teach both graduate and undergraduate courses and not even offer the benefits or the minimal prestige of a VAP position. To this writer, the position seems a touch predatory.
  • $8,000-$9,000 / course is a lot of money. The 2/2 course load means more time for research. Isn't Queen's University one of the best colleges in Canada? This actually sounds like a great opportunity.
  • Er, that's CAD$ 9,000, which is not quite the same as US$ 9,000. It's a great university indeed, but the job may not be worth it, economically, unless you are already in Canada or, better yet, in Ontario. Entirely unrelated to the money aspect, my understanding is that they are more interested in people specializing in poetry and prose rather than drama.

University of California, Davis (CA) - Managing Director, UCD/Globe Center for Teaching of Shakespeare (1 yr. appt. - potentially renewable)[]

The School of Education (SOE) was established in 2002, building on a 95-year tradition at UC Davis of working to strengthen public education. The School offers preparation for the California teaching credential, master's and doctoral-level programs for both educational researchers and practitioners, and professional development for educators throughout Northern California. The School is organized into 8 functional units, with approximately 50 senate and clinical faculty and 50 staff, including a growing number of research centers.

Background on the development of SOE's newest Center, the UC Davis/Shakespeare's Globe Center for the Teaching of Shakespeare in the American Classroom, is highlighted below.

In 2005, Shakespeare's Globe and UC Davis created a Globe Education Academy (GEA) for middle and high school teachers working in Northern California. Initially a collaboration between the Mondavi Center (MC) and Globe Education, Shakespeare's Globe, the Academy attracted interest and support from the UC Davis School of Education who became a third partner. The GEA now has over 110 alums.

In addition to working with the GEA, Globe Education Practitioners visit Davis every year to lead professional development workshops for teachers at the university and workshops for students in schools.

In 2013, Globe Education, the MC and the SOE established the first Shakespeare Works When Shakespeare Plays weekend workshop conference for teachers at the Mondavi Center. The Shakespeare Theatre Association was invited to participate and became a significant partner.

In 2015, conversations around how Globe Education might share its approaches to working with Shakespeare in schools and across the curriculum led to Globe Education Practitioners working with faculty and pre-service teachers in the SOE. The UCD SOE and Globe Education, Shakespeare's Globe are now establishing a Center for Teaching Shakespeare in the American Classroom.

The Center's work will be based on the ethos and principles of Globe Education's practice drawing on its approaches to working with pre-service and qualified teachers as well as with elementary, middle and high-school students. The Center should become the leader in the field of exemplary teaching of Shakespeare in the US Classroom.

Job Summary: Under the general direction of SOE Dean, as director independently manages and grows the self-supporting UC Davis/Shakespeare's Globe Center for the Teaching of Shakespeare in the American Classroom. Duties include identifying ongoing funding, managing daily operations and budget for diverse center projects, strategic planning for the Center, and communications including online and web-based. Ensures Center programs are consistently delivered with high quality in order to meet the needs of K-12 teachers and students, while helping the School of Education and affiliated faculty to develop the Center's national presence. Organizes the activities of a team of Advanced Skills Teachers chosen from The Globe Education Academy alumni who will implement the Center's strategies for teaching and learning based on Globe Education practices.

The Managing Director works closely with Center-affiliated SOE faculty and with Globe Education administrators to implement programs and manages the Center's budget to ensure that all programs are sustainable.

Physical Demands: Sit for extended periods of time at a computer. Occasional transporting of meeting materials to other locations on UC Davis campus or Sacramento. Lift materials weighing up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications: Advanced degree in education or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working as a K-12 teacher or working in educational environments. Knowledge of or experience teaching Shakespeare. Experience with coordination of educational programs. Managerial experience and skill to work in operations, budgeting, program development and implementation of various concurrent projects. Strategic experience in developing both long-term and short-term program plans, with proven results for deliverables on stated timelines. Experience coordinating programs involving in-house staff and external collaborators. Experience in event planning or project management, especially education related, such as symposia, seminars or conferences, including assisting with agenda, marketing, materials, and other content. Experience aligning budgets to project goals. Highly developed verbal and written communications skills incorporating political acumen to work and communicate confidently and effectively with various representatives of school districts and academia.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching Shakespeare in a classroom setting. Experience in successfully managing self-supporting programs. Comprehensive understanding of educational programs and the properties of sustainable business model. Experience using financial information systems. Experience with web content management systems.
