Does anyone have any info on whether this is a real search? I've got my ear to the ground for jobs and I heard of this only through a fluke. It all seems very suspicious: it's barely been advertised and the lead time between the initial posting and the September review of applications makes it seem like they must have an identified or inside candidate they are trying to hire quickly under the radar while doing the bare legal minimum of running a search. It'd be nice to know before putting in the effort of applying, but I guess that's the position job candidates are always in!
^^They did run a VAP search ("Scholar-in-Residence") for an Early Modernist last Spring, so they could be happy with their hire.
Seconding the likehood of an inside candidate. It's a very early date without a hard deadline and with little application material needed. Smells a bit strange. It might well be that they're doing the minimum needed legally before they make a hire. At least they're not asking for large volumes of customized documents.
This is obviously a fake search--no serious place would do a national or even local search for a TT position with such little adevrtising and odd timeline. Of course this happens all the time but it is rarely so brazen. I suppose we should be grateful that they are not getting our hopes up? In any case, anyone qualified should apply nonethelesss--at least make it hard for them. And you never know whether the administration of the college is also in on the fix. If not, and if they take any oversight of the process, the more applications that come in, the better the chance someone outside the dept. will spot a good candidate and maybe start asking questions about why certain appications are not being considered and force a real competition. I wonder if there is some way to alert someone in provost office or something without seeming too paranoid? Small chance, but maybe could help make it all more fair and legit. Otherwise, I guess we just hope the inside person is some long-suffering adjunct they've been exploiting for years? a happy ending for a deserving soul at least.
^^ Calm down with the hysteria. This is not "obviously" a fake search. (Even when there *is* an inside candidate he or she is frequently bested by an outside candidate--I've seen it happen many times.) I agree that the early review is odd, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything other than that the committee will be looking at applications as they arrive. Regardless, though, the department is not operating freelance here, and if something is up, admin knows it. +1

Just an observation, but it's interesting that the search failed last year instead of offering the job to the second choice (or third, or interviewing more people). Isn't it more hassle to have to redo the search than to review the applications you already had? I've heard of lots of jobs going to second and third choices before. (In fact, I have a TT job, and was a second choice candidate.)
Depending on the timing, it might have been that the second or third choice candidates were no longer available, etc. Who knows! So many possibilities.

Anyone have thoughts on the "one-page" research and teaching statements? Will breaking the rule really have an adverse effect on consideration for the position?
I think breaking that rule would be a rather bad idea. If they asked for one page, I'm going to give them that, even if it starts with "Although I can't cover all my research agenda, here's the highlights." I've been told that you might be able to get away with giving a search committee a writing sample that doesn't fit their requested limit if it's a published article, but you should strictly abide by all other length requests.
How adversely it could affect you probably depends a lot on factors you can't control. I wouldn't risk annoying the person who has your application as the last in a stack and then you give them twice as much as they asked for. (How much do you like it when a student turns in a paper that was twice word limit?)

Has anyone been able to submit letters of recommendation using the job application site? I followed the directions for generating Interfolio email addresses to fill in the "reference email" fields, but then it also wants .pdfs of the letters of recommendation. How is that even possible while maintaining confidentiality? Any help appreciated!

After contacting them and being told to send the letters to a specific email address (the person contacted seemed unaware the form would not submit without the documents and did not acknowledge my mention of the problem), I opted to click on the option to "write" each letter, simply wrote "submitted via Interfolio" in the text field, and then used the Interfolio emails for my reference emails. I have confirmation from Interfolio that those letters were then delivered.
Similarly, I clicked on the option to "write" the letters and cut-and-pasted the Interfolio email ["send.xxx"] address for each letter. I then used the Interfolio letter addresses again when asked to supply contact info for my references. Not sure if that was right thing to do, but I suppose they can call my recommenders if they really want to discuss something that is not addressed in their letters.
I got all the way to the end of the process of applying for this job, then said "forget it" and quit because it was so sketchy. Is it really necessary for them to obtain rights to contact your friends, family, or neighbors to inquire about your character? I mean, come on; we're not applying for a job at the FBI. Given the choice between taking a job at a school like this (not to mention that it's a damn 4/4) and going on the job market again next year, I'd be happy to decline. Who the hell wants to work in that envionment anyway? Absurd. No thank you.

^^^ Furthermore, this "damn 4/4" is at a university with an overall student to faculty ratio of 16:1. I looked at the registrar's online schedule, and many of the literature courses offered this fall appear to be running with ony 5-12 students in them.

Regarding the LORs, there is a page where you asked to enter contact information for referees after the confusing document upload portion of the application. Was this always a part of the process or has it been recently added? Do you think it still necessary to send the letters via Interfolio even after entering the contact information?
Two-step process for LORs: 1) upload for each letter the contact information for your referrees with a note saying that they have been sent to HR; 2) have those documents emailed to Vanessa Cottingham (cotting@montevallo.edu), and she will attach them to your application.

We are looking for a Research Fellow in English & Creative Writing to undertake a significant piece of research during the tenure of an award in collaboration with the lead researcher. “Before Shakespeare: The Beginning of London Commercial Theatre” is a two-year research project funded by the AHRC on the first thirty years of the Elizabethan playhouses (c 1565-95). There will be significant archival work, aiming to produce a census of what we know about this period of theatre history and how we know it. There will also be administrative support relating to a number of practice and performance based experiments with Dolphin’s Back and Shakespeare’s Globe. A successful collaboration will result in named co-authorship of an article, essay collection and monograph. We are looking for applications from candidates with a complementary academic background.
