NOTES:

Is the "personal statement" supposed to be a teaching philosophy and research statement rolled into one? Or is this actually supposed to be a cover letter?  It's odd that a cover letter is not part of the application materials.

  • - It's not odd; it's outrageous.

- When you go to apply through Interfolio, you'll discover they require you to upload a Personal Statement, with the instruction, 'Statement that addresses your experience and potential as a teacher, and your scholarly interests'; i.e., a cover letter. Not sure why the ad is worded as it is.

  • - Right; thus the confusion. The ad asks for statements (plural), the Interfolio form allows only one. Also not sure why they would say 'personal statement' if they mean cover letter. Wonder what the person who has received acknowledgment ended up submitting.
  • - That was me. I submitted a standard cover letter, including teaching experience and scholarly interests.
  • The peculiar phrasing of this ad should tip you off to a couple of things: first, that those who wrote it are quite disconnected from the norms of writing such ads, and second, that they want to emphasize teaching rather than (serious) scholarship--hence the odd, euphemistic call for a "commitment to undergraduate research." For an account of what this place is like, see Universities to Fear, the Chronic issues section.
  • The peculiar obsession of a former colleague should tip you off to a couple of things...Anyone who wants to find out what people at Bucknell do can check the English Department website and faculty profiles.
  • ^^ Agreeing with this last commenter. An oddly-written job ad is simply NOT proof "that those who wrote it are quite disconnected from the norms of writing such ads." Often ads are written (or rewritten, and sometimes re-re-written) by HR or by deans and provosts, and the committee has relatively little input or simply doesn't have the time or energy to fight that fight. If you want to know how much research is valued, do some research of your on the department web page. (For the record, I'm not at Bucknell and don't know anyone there. But I'm a veteran search committee member at a comparable institution.)

NOTES:

  • Is there any chatter on this job at all? Was it a targeted hire? I heard that so many people were applying for it, but I've heard nothing official or unofficial. [12/01]
  • A: I know someone who was asked to send in letters of rec (right around T-giving), although not sure if this was an actual shortlisting or simply problems with the AcademicJobsOnline system. Anyway, at the least it suggests they have a review of apps underway and this is not necessarily a targeted hire. [12/07]
  • Just 1 interview scheduled? Charade search seems likely if true. [12/15]
  • I think it's more likely that advanced asst. and assoc. profs contribute to the wiki at a lower rate than other jobseekers, for a variey of reasons (age difference and reduced camaraderie with non-tt jobseekers are two that spring to mind). Don't encourage paranoia for no reason, please (there are enough things to be anxious about on the market already!).
  • ^^ Agreeing with this. Committees interview as fews as 10 candidates, and many of the postings here only list 1-3 interviewees. Best explanation is that most people on the market aren't contributing, not that committees aren't interviewing.
  • Know for sure of at least 1 other interview here with someone who doesn't post to wiki. You only ever get a fraction of the action here--best not to draw larger conclusions from the # of x's. [12/16]
  • I'm disapppointed that, at this level, there was no "thank you, but no thank you" letter. I understand that a department would be overburdened by sending individual rejections when they get 200+ applications from ABDs/new PhDs, but for a position at this level (advanced asst/assoc--I'm in my first year as an assoc) I had hoped for more civility. [1/03] --> edited to add: the explicit rejection I was looking for came today, 1/5, in an email from the chair's secretary.

NOTES:

Nothing yet? Anywhere?

  • The posting does say "Review of applications begins October 1, 2014.   Applications received up to 30 days after review begins will be given full consideration," which makes the deadline seem more like 10/31 than 10/1. Perhaps they're waiting until after that to begin to request additional materials.
  • Does anyone who has *not* received a request for more materials notice that the status of this application in Interfolio has changed to Submitted (Incomplete) with slots for letters, disseration abstract, writing sample, teaching statement, etc.? [11/10]
  • ^^ Yes, I have not recvd word for more materials, but my Interfolio status is the same as yours with the option to submit more work. IIt could just be the way the system is set up. but fingers crossed, friend! (x3!)
    • Pretty sure it's just a glitch with Interfolio - another search had the same thing happen for all applicants. Hate to be a Dudley Downer here, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. [11/10]
    • Don't fret though. It's not likely that they are done asking people for materials yet. I'm sure they are doing it in waves.
    • For those who have been contacted about more materials - For what did they ask?
    • ^^ Writing sample, 3-4 reference letters, teaching statement, and dissertation/book abstract. I was also one of the people who had the "Submitted (Incomplete)" status on interfolio and was notified yesterday to send in more work. I'm hoping this bodes well for the other people who posted with the same interfolio status--my fingers are still crossed!
  • Does anyone's Interfolio status *not* say Incomplete now? Asking for a rather dejected friend, of course, who definitely isn't me. To know if I my friend should be hopeful. [11/14]
    • The person who suggested that the incomplete status is a "glitch" is correct, I think. "Incomplete" does not mean that you are going to be asked for additional materials. That said, they are clearly asking for additional materials on a rolling basis. There is no reason to be dejected at the point. Quit checking the Wiki so often :)
    • I haven't been asked to send more stuff, but my status still says "incomplete."
  • No interview invitations yet? It makes me wonder if they don't know already who they will offer the job to.
  • I would guess they're probably running late (wouldn't be surprised if they are still reviewing all the additional materials they asked for). Really, for MLA interviews to be scheduled, there's still plenty of time (some SC's will ask for MLA interviews right before X-mas, although hopefully that's not the case with Emory). [12/07]
    • a thousand yeses to this. it's still early to be scheduling interviews, and people will post news when they have it. there is no need to constantly inquire and there is even less need to be so paranoid about it being a 'real' search. there are enough real issues to worry about already without adding fatuous fuel to the fire.

The English department at Occidental College, a highly selective liberal arts institution in Los Angeles, seeks applicants for a tenure track position of Assistant Professor with a specialization in either medieval or Renaissance English literature. Candidates should be able to teach standard surveys in a period that ranges from Beowulf to Milton, as well as specialized, upper-division courses in both the medieval and Renaissance periods. This is in keeping with Occidentals mission of excellence and equity as well as with the English departments commitment to developing historically informed critical perspectives among our students.

  • 11/11: Anyone hear anything yet?
  • Note from search chair: Since it is the time of year when people are eager to know when they might hear, I thought I would post the search committee's timeline.  The search committee is meeting Dec. 4th to determine whom to interview at MLA.  Thus, requests for interviews should go out by Friday Dec. 5th or VERY early the next week. Following MLA the full committee will meet again and select 3-4 candidates to bring to campus from those interviewed at MLA. Because of when our semester starts, campus visits are typically late January to mid February. I hope that helps! [posted 11/25/14]
  • ^^ Many thanks for this information! Much appreciated
  • Agreed! Thank you! I very much appreciate your continued communication and transparency regarding the process here.
  • 12/11: Wondering if the search chair (or anyone else) could confirm for those of us who have not yet heard anything that we are officially out of the running at this point. I ask because it's a little odd that only one person reports getting an interview. I really appreciate how transparent the process has been so far and am grateful to you and the rest of the committee for all your work.
  • Note from search chair: My apologies that I hadn't looked at the wiki for awhile and hence the delay in response.  If you did not receive a request for an MLA interview, you should have received an email shortly thereafter letting you know you were out of the running. (There was a brief delay between the yes and no emails as we needed to hear back that people had accepted the MLA interviews.)  Thank you so much, though, to everyone who put in the time and effort to apply. I know the job market can be trying and wish everyone the best of luck. My deep apologies if you didn't ever get either an "yes interview" or "no interview" email.  If all you got was radio silence, definitely let me know, as we want to make sure all the necessary emails are going out to people.
