The Department of English, Modern Languages and Journalism at Emporia State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of pre-1800 British Literature to begin in August 2014. Any area of research specialization within this field will be considered, but the department seeks a candidate who is prepared to teach a wide variety of courses, including History of the English Language.   • Search Committee Chair, here. Obviously, the timing of this search is a bit strange: not many schools run TT searches that begin in late April. But, we had one of our Brit Lit profs announce her departure recently, so we have begun this search ASAP (as soon as we got through the various steps to receive official approval for the search). You will notice the ad says "review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled." I never quite knew what this sort of language meant when I was on the job market, but in this case we plan to move as quickly as possible with the search. We understand many of you are nearing the end of your semester--a particularly busy time for us all--but please do try to submit application materials as promptly as is feasible (the search will be using Interfolio's ByCommittee system, so you will need to wait for the JIL ad to appear, then apply through the Interfolio link).   • I had the pleasure of having this gig before leaving this year for a TT position closer to home.  But I left somewhat reluctantly: the department is youthful, supportive, and humane, and the curriculum is  progressive. Like most small universities, Drake feels more like a liberal arts college since the faculty are deeply committed to the success of their students. And if the position is currently non-TT, the department is lobbying hard to see the line convert. In the meantime, the job feels a lot like a TT position since it qualifies for sabbaticals, research funding, etc., and contracts are relatively long-term.

1/15/14: Has anyone heard anything from this school recently? I had a phone interview with them on Nov. 12, and I haven't heard a word.Just wondering if this position is still active or if they've progressed at all since conducting their phone interviews.

  • I also interviewed with them and haven't heard anything. However, they told me they would get back to me "some time in January" so I'm not too concerned yet. I know they were still interviewing in December, and because of the holidays they might not have been able to meet until a week or so ago.

2/14/14: Received the following e-mail today: "First, please accept  our apologies for the delay in sending you an update following the phone interview before the holidays.   • Any idea what the teaching load is on this one? I imagine it won't get a huge amount of applications because of the location.
  • No idea what the teaching load is, but I wouldn't bet against this job receiving just as many apps as everyplace else. Given how weak the job market is and the large number of PhDs and ABDs looking for jobs, most of us can't afford to be too picky about location.
  • Au contraire: for a good subset of folks, this location is ideal. A flagship university in Alaska? That's a draw , not a deterrence; quality of life may trump prestige.
  • UAA is technically a branch campus. UA-Fairbanks is the flagship.
  • So has anyone heard a peep from these guys? (1/2)
  •  I inquired, and was told that they've completed the first round of the review and are in the process of conducting the second; initial interviews will be by phone. (1/5)

Medieval and/or early modern Mediterranean Literatures and Cultures. Work in at least two languages, including Arabic, Byzantine Greek, Italian, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, Spanish, or other relevant languages. Candidates should have a strong grounding in the tradition of their primary literatures, with interests in ways the larger Mediterranean region is a relevant category of analysis. We seek scholars with the appropriate linguistic expertise whose work transcends traditional literary and textual approaches by conceptualizing the medieval and/or early modern Mediterranean as a dynamic space of cultural and historical significance. The successful candidate will be expected to teach large undergraduate lecture courses and small advanced seminars, and to actively participate in the graduate program. This position carries a five-course equivalency workload, which normally means teaching four courses over three quarters and carrying other academic and service responsibilities. The ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.

This job went to the internal candidate. I went on the campus interview and it was a complete joke - and a waste of time. They couldn't have been more obviously intending to give the job to the internal guy. The committee was composed of only 2 people and one of them was his supervisor. They didn't even bother to spend a full hour with the rest of us. If you didn't waste the money on the campus interview, consider yourself lucky.

The CLIR/DLF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Curation for Early Modern Studies is an expansion of the CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Academic Libraries. These five, fully-funded fellowships will provide recent Ph.D.s with professional development, education, and training opportunities in data curation for Early Modern Studies. Through this program, CLIR seeks to raise awareness and build capacity for sound data management practice throughout the academy.

Each fellowship is two year appointment, with a commensurate salary, plus benefits, and a yearly travel and research stipend.

Who May Apply: Recent Ph.D.s from any discipline with relevant expertise in Early Modern Studies are encouraged to apply, so long as they meet the eligibility criteria for the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program . Folger Shakespeare Library
  • The Folger Shakespeare Library seeks to appoint a postdoctoral CLIR-Folger Digital Communities Fellow, for a period of two years, beginning fall 2014. The CLIR-Folger Fellow will join a community of 50 long- and short-term residential fellows at the Folger, fully participating in the daily exchange of ideas, sources, and research strategies. Fellowship will come with opportunities to present on work-in-progress to the Folger’s scholarly community.   • The CLIR postdoctoral fellow’s research will focus on the challenges for data curation posed by the different types of readers’ annotations on early modern books. To date the guiding principle in digitizing early modern texts has been to provide “clean” copy. But where does this leave the common phenomenon of those books that readers have annotated, sometimes in painstaking detail? The Clark owns books so heavily annotated that they straddle the divide between published book and manuscript. As a consequence, our received histories of the transition between manuscript and print no long appear adequate. The annotations in many Clark volumes contain a trove of information on their circulation and consumption. How might metadata address the methodological and conceptual challenges presented by these objects, recording the level and type of annotation? How might recent work in the field of material studies/history of the book impact curatorial decisions? If, as seems likely for these texts, the study of annotation shifts the focus of understanding early modern volumes from authors to readers, how might this influence our description and cataloguing of the volumes?

  • Penn Provenance Project Fellow
  • The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seek an innovative and energetic CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Curation for Early Modern Studies to play an integral role in the working life of the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at Penn’s Van Pelt Library, including overseeing the transition of the Penn Provenance Project (PPP) and its data to a new platform.
  • Penn Provenance Project (PPP): Through its faculty and library resources, the University of Pennsylvania has long been at the forefront of book history and material text research, especially in the early modern era. Building on this strength, the Kislak Center is actively becoming a node for provenance history research. This research is essential for understanding how texts moved through the early modern world, what kinds of books collectors and libraries of the period valued, and the nature of print and manuscript cultural production. The fellow will play a key role in developing this field through his or her research and involvement in working with book historical data at the Kislak Center through the Penn Provenance Project.

Principal Duties

Teaching

This is primarily a teaching role and the post-holder will take teaching and marking responsibility for courses at all levels of the undergraduate programme in Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature, and will also contribute to MA teaching.

The post-holder will take joint responsibility for the 1st Year core course EN1106 Shakespeare, and will be supported by larger teaching teams on the 2nd Year course EN2010 Renaissance Literature. The post-holder will have sole responsibility for the 3rd Year course EN3014 Early Modern Bodies. He or she will also take Foundation Tutorials for 1st year students, and supervise dissertations for 3rd year students. The post-holder will be expected to contribute teaching and marking to the MA Shakespeare programme.

Administration, monitoring, guidance

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the administration of the Department through the assumption of appropriate administrative responsibilities, such as personal tutor, and contribute to open days, UCAS days and other events held in the department.
