Keele University (UK) - Lecturer in Early Modern English[]

School of Humanities Starting Salary: Grade 7a, £32,267

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer with research interests in literature of the period 1550-1640, who will join a successful, established English programme, delivering a range of degrees at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. An ability to teach Shakespeare, early modern drama and other literature of the early modern period is a requirement of the post; research interests in Shakespeare and/or other early modern dramatists would be an advantage, as would openness to teaching modules outside the candidate’s period of specialisation. Third-year options run by previous Early Modernists at Keele on Shakespeare on Film have proved popular in the past not only with English students but also with Media and Film Studies students; it would be an advantage (although not by any means essential) if candidates for the current vacancy were able to develop a similarly filmic offering at level 3. Candidates for the position will be engaged in high-quality research, suitable for submission to the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to: Professor Susan Bruce, Head of the School of Humanities. Email: s.e.bruce@keele.ac.uk, tel 01782 734119

NOTES:

Q. I applied for this position last week, and uploaded to Interfolio all the documents requested in the ad (cover letter, cv, abstract, 3 letters). So I believed the application was complete. However, I was checking through my "Delivery History" in Interfolio this morning and noticed that the system is claiming the application is *not* complete because a "Writing Sample (1)" is still needed. However, when I try to add another delivery of a writing sample, the system won't let me: "Sorry! This position has been locked and you cannot create another delivery to it." So is this "required" writing sample just a placeholder for when/if the committee requests one later or is there some other glitch in the system? I guess I'm just not going to worry about it right now (since I can't seem to send anything else for this application), but I did wonder if anyone had run into this issue or inquired with Interfolio about it. [10/26]

Update: Just FYI in case anyone else encounters this issue and becomes concerned, here is the (very prompt) email reply that I recieved from Interfolio Help: "Thank you for contacting us. I have taken a look a the application to Brown University and their requirements through our end. It looks like you have submitted all the materials necessary for the position. The writing sample is something they will contact you about submitting in the second stage of the application, after they have viewed the original materials. I apologize for the confusion with this process. Please feel free to follow up if there is anything else I can help you with."

Ghent University - TT position in pre-1900 European Lit.[]

Subject to final approval from university authorities, the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at Ghent University (Belgium) will soon advertize two tenure-track positions as docent (equivalent of Lecturer in the UK system and Assistant Professor in the US system) with a focus on academic research. The advertisement will include four disciplines; the two posts will be awarded to the candidates most likely to contribute to the Facultys strong research profile. The Department of Literary Studies wants to draw attention to the vacancy in European literature from Antiquity to 1900, and asks potential candidates to get in touch now, so as to receive detailed instructions on application deadlines and procedures as soon as that information is available. Applications from individuals with expertise in any European literature taught in the department (Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, Scandinavian) and any period prior to 1900 will be considered. Applications from individuals with transhistorical, transnational, translingual or interdisciplinary research interests are particularly welcome. This may include but is not limited to:

  • publications or research plans that cover more than one period (for example, studies tracing the development of a concept, trope or textual tradition from antiquity through the Middle Ages or the reception of Classical works in the early modern period).
  • publications or research plans that cover more than one national or language tradition (comparative approaches, the study of influence and imitation across borders, etc.)
  • publications or research plans that create bridges to other departments and disciplines (history, art history, archaeology, history of science, law, philosophy, etc.)
  • publications or research plans that involve innovative methodologies (for example, New Philology, New Historicism, Digital Humanities, history of the book, textual materialism, stylometry, computational philology)

The successful candidate will play a central role in the organization of the new two-year M.A. programme in Historical Linguistics and Literature (ancient, medieval and early modern). This M.A. programme teaches students to decipher texts from earlier periods and to situate them in their wider historical, social, cultural and philosophical context. Coursework focuses on diachronic linguistics, techniques of textual analysis, history of ideas and cultural history as well as period-specific topics in the various languages taught in the department. For more information on the programme, see: tinyurl.com/75hqxvw The successful candidate will also contribute to one or more of the following interdisciplinary research groups at the university:

The successful candidate will play a role in coordinating research collaborations across the language groups and research periods within the department and in establishing bridges between the department and other research units both at the University and beyond. Collaborations could include the development of new course offerings or programmes of study (for example, through Erasmus Mundus) or larger research projects (for example, through HERA: www.heranet.info).

Please note that the candidate must have obtained a doctorate in a relevant field between 1 Feb. 2006 and 1 Feb. 2011. This window, however, may be expanded in the case of medical or maternity leave or extenuating circumstances. If in doubt, please get in touch.

This is a tenure-track position. At the time of appointment, the lecturer and the university will agree upon a set of personalized goals, which will be laid out in an addendum to the tenure-track contract. After a five-year trial period, the lecturer will be granted tenure and promoted to Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) provided that s/he has met these goals.

Candidates are encouraged to clarify in their applications not only their past research and publications but also their future research plans and how they might collaborate with research groups and with colleagues both inside and outside the department. It is recommended that candidates give as much detail as possible about future projects and plans including possible sources of funding and the venues to which research will be submitted.

The Department of Literary Studies at UGent is a vibrant community of 168 people, including some 50 fully funded PhD-students and 20 postdocs; the professor will join 27 colleagues specialising in nine languages as well as General and Comparative Literature.

Ghent University is committed to internationalization and welcomes applications from foreign scholars. Knowledge of Dutch is not necessary to apply, but candidates should be willing to learn the language. The International Staff Office assists with the transition and orientation of foreign employees.

The deadline for application is likely to be 15 August 2012 (subject to confirmation), but candidates are advized to get in touch with the contact persons. NOTES:

Odd and rather impolite rejection email with the subject line of "regrets" and very little info. This and other stuff I've heard makes me think it might not be a great place to work. I'm an assistant professor at a much higher ranked liberal arts school, and we would never handle things in such an unprofessional, less-than kind manner.

  • I had a campus visit there last year and found the entire department wonderfully professional, warm, enthusiastic, and welcoming (even if I didn't get the job in the end!).
  • If you are an assistant professor at a much higher-ranked LAC, then why are you applying for this job in the first place?
  • At least they sent the rejection? They're the only ones so far nice enough to tell me I'm out of the running, and it didn't seem impolite to me. But then, this is my first time on the market and it's my first rejection, so maybe I do't know what a 'polite' one looks like.
  • Agreed. Only official rejection I've received so far, too. I'm hoping some schools may be holding out on rejections until they hear back from their first choices...
  • My only official rejection thus far as well, but I also found this letter to be extremely odd and impolite. I'm considering starting a business drafting polite and polished rejection letters for English departments, because so many of them (based on the last couple of years, anyway) are terribly awkward and even obnoxious

Does anyone have any news about campus visits for this position? (Moved this to "Notes" since that seemed like the more reasonable place for it)

  • I was told that they would meet on 1/16 to decide who to invite. Other than that, I have no idea. x2
  • Word is that campus visits have been scheduled for this position.
  • Received an email today (1/21) that there had been a "minor complication" and it was taking longer than expected for them to come to a decision on campus visits. They anticipate notifying people this week. I don't know how this relates to the previous comment, but at least it's something in writing. x3
  • Received an email yesterday (1/23) saying that the department and the dean had approved the short-list of finalists to bring to campus. Very nice, informative, courteous message. Contra the sour grapes of the applicant who didn't make the first round (above), I've found JCU to be extremely courteous and very good at keeping candidates in the loop. This is far from my first rodeo, and I know just how unconcerned about job candidates and their anxieties hiring committees can be. Kudos to them and good luck to the finalists. (x4) I concur; I found the search committee to be extremely thoughtful and professional. Lucky person indeed who ends up having such colleagues.

NOTES:

Question: Anyone have any idea what the teaching load is? I couldn't figure it out from their website.

A: It's 3-3, though it can sometimes be 2-3 with research 'waivers'...

FYI - if you apply for this job via the RIC system (which you have to do) and you are sending your letters of reference via Interfolio it will cost you $2 extra dollars (so $8 in total). They are not paying the cost for delivery and you can only send the letters separately by way of Interfolio which will charge you $6 for the first letter and a dollar each for the other two. It is no big deal and I did it because I had no choice but it was rather thoughtless.

Question: Anyone else have issues getting letters to/through their system? I cut/pasted the automatic email addresses that Interfolio provides, as per other apps via this software elsewhere, but Interfolio has never received the request needed to start a delivery. The online system still lists that it is awaiting reference letters.

A: I just put in the emails of my references and they sent in their letters (I'm not sure if via Interfolio or direct upload), but I do know they received an auto email asking them to send in their letters, if that helps.

A: I called HR at RIC and the representative said not to worry. They'll send the email request out today.

Followup (from poster of last question): I contacted HR (via email) to check on my reference letters and never received a response. However, Interfolio did finally receive the request, and I sent a delivery immediately; it still took about 3 business days (just past the deadline) for the reference letters to show up as "received" in the RIC system.

Anyone hear anything? Dec 20/12  Are they definitely interviewing in Boston? (12/26)  No word yet, and I'm wondering about the request for additional materials on 12/18 since the posting called for a writing sample in the application.  Were these writing samples in addition to what wa originally requested? (12/27)

They are not interviewing at MLA.

The request for additional materials indicated they would not be at MLA, and would be doing campus interviews in late January or February. (1/2)

NOTES:

Q: Anyone have a clear sense of what they mean by a "brief statement of research and teaching interests"? This is separate from the letter of application, right? Do you think they want a brief statement of research plans AND another statement on teaching, or are they requesting a single additional statement that combines and condenses our research and teaching interests (which is how I'm now understanding it)?

Q: I had the same question. Are they actually asking us to produce one, maybe two new documents that replicate the content of our other documents, but follow a slightly different format? Right now I'm thinking of just sending my teaching letter and dissertation summary; it's pretty unethical of universities to require these kinds of customized documents in this job market. What are other people planning on doing?

A: I've checked with my placement director and two of my committee members, and there seems to be agreement that this should combine elements from the research statement and statement of teaching philosophy, and "brief" in this context means about 1000 words. Also, they all said that it should closely echo the research and teaching sections of the letter, as it might be used in place of the letter for search committee discussions. ETA: The Interfolio application process has further directions: "Brief summary of research and teaching interests: should include dissertation abstract (if applicable) as well as statement of teaching interests." So, I'm revising what I'm doing to just submitting the dissertation abstract with a paragraph each on my teaching philosophy and what I would teach.

A: For those outside of North America without Interfolio accounts: Stanford will generate a free account for you on receipt of your application.

NOTES:

To those who received requests for more materials: Did you get an email, or did the status of your Interfolio delivery simply update?

Ans: received an e-mail asking for additional materials and instructing that they should be uploaded through Interfolio. When I logged in to Interfolio and accessed my original application, there were new spaces for uploading the requested additional documents.

My interfolio page for Towson updated and requested additional materials but I did not receive an e-mail reuqesting them. Has this happened to other people also?

A:  Yes.  In fact, if I hadn't just read your note I never would have snooped around on Interfolio and seen the request.  Q:  How are we supposed to know that materials have been requested if there is no email from the school or Interfolio, or some kind of notice when you sign in?

Does anyone *not* have a request for additional materials? That might help us solve this problem?

I also just checked my interfolio history, which indicates that I should submit additional materials. I suspect this is a computer error for those of us who didn't get an email... I will call HR on Monday to confirm.

  • Different user*: There is no specific request for additional materials, but there are two buttons added to the app to either "Send Additional Materials" or "Withdraw Application." It now says that the application is incomplete and that "Stage 2" requires a writing sample and 3 letters. I'm also thinking that this is an Interfolio mistake.
  • I also accessed my account today and had the incomplete application notification but had received no email request. I'm guessing they just added the option to submit additional documents on interfolio for everyone, but only sent emails for real material requests. I submitted documents today just in case, but I don't think this is a real materials request.
  • Any news on the possible Interfolio error? I have a slot for extra materials, too, but didn't receive an email from the school.

Is this Bradin Cormack's job, i.e., has he left or is he leaving? This ad sounds like it's written FOR him.

NOTES:

Is this a repeat of last year's search or a totally new position?

A: No, I know the person they hired last year for this fall. They are hiring again this year.

  • Thanks for clarifying (9/20)

Does anyone know what they mean by "book abstract"? Will a dissertation abstract do?

A: I think it indicates they are probably looking for an advanced assistant professor, because such a person would have to have a book abstract to be competitive at UW-M (this is speculation, not fact). But since the job ad isn't specific about that, I would assume that a dissertation abstract re-labeled as a book abstract would be what they were looking for from someone still in or just out of grad school.

A: My advisor also thinks that a diss abstract re-titled "book abstract" should do the trick.

Q: by "dossier" do they just mean letters of rec or are they asking for teaching materials also?

A: I assume letters only if nothing else is specified.

Q: Has anyone been able to confirm what the "dossier" really is?

A: I'm really hoping it's letters because that's what I sent... but I have no idea.

Q: Has anyone heard anything? (12/14)

A: MLA interviews were scheduled yesterday [posted 12/19]

McGill University (Montreal, Quebec) - 2 Postdoctoral Fellowships in Studies of Early Modern Europe  - PHONE INTERVIEW REQUESTED[]

The Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas at McGill University seeks two postdoctoral fellows in Studies in Early Modern Europe. One will have a demonstrable research interest in the public life of arts and ideas (A). The other will have a demonstrable research interest in Digital Humanities (B). The Fellows will join a large, international, interdisciplinary research project entitled, “Forms of Conversion: Religion, Culture, and Cognitive Ecologies in Early Modern Europe and its Worlds.” “Forms of Conversion” will study how early modern Europeans changed their confessional, political, social, and sexual identities. It will consider how these subjective changes interrelated with broader transformations in early modernity—the geopolitical reorientation of Europe in light of emerging relations with Islam and the Americas; the rethinking of the knowledge of Antiquity and the Middle Ages; the reimagining of God. By examining forms of conversion across disciplinary boundaries as a network of movements and transformations, the project will develop an understanding of religious, cultural, and cognitive change that will provide a new account of early modernity and a foundation for a renewed understanding of the present age. Members of the team include scholars in Art, Architectural, Literary, Music, and Theatre History, History of Religion, History of Cognition and Emotion, Social and Intellectual History, and Digital Humanities.

The start date for the year-long positions is August 1, 2013. There is the possibility of a one-year renewal. Candidates will have a PhD in a field consonant with “Forms of Conversion,” a research program relevant to the central interests of the project, and a record of work in one of the two fellowship tracks. The Fellows will work on their own research program, collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary context, and may have opportunities to teach courses in their areas of specialty. Fellow A will also take part in the development of the project’s program of public outreach, education, and exchange and serve on the project’s Education Advisory Committee. Fellow B will take part in the development of the project’s Digital Humanities infrastructure and serve on the project’s Management Committee. Fellowship stipends will be approximately $40,000CDN per annum, plus travel and research support. Applications, consisting of a description of research program, writing sample, and CV must be sent by email (.pdf attachments only) by April 5, 2013 to Paul Yachnin, Tomlinson Professor of Shakespeare Studies, McGill University at Conversion.IPLAI@McGill.ca. Please indicate clearly whether you wish to be considered for the A or B track. Please also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to the same email address by the April 5 deadline.
