Massachusetts College of Art and Design - Literature & Writing - Liberal Arts - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

Tenure-Track Faculty, Literature & Writing-Liberal Arts.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design seeks to fill a full-time tenure track position for the teaching of literature and expository writing in the Liberal Arts Department. The teaching load at this Massachusetts State University institution is three courses per semester and alternative and departmental responsibilities. Faculty serve on governance committees. English is not offered as a major.

We are looking for someone to teach, primarily, a required, chronologically organized course exploring the sources of Western culture through a survey of literature. Mandatory readings include Genesis, Iliad or Odyssey, a Greek tragedy, selections from Dante or Chaucer, and a Shakespeare play, augmented by other major works selected by the professor (e.g. Gilgamesh, Sappho's poetry, a synoptic gospel, selections from Virgil, Ovid or Catullus).

The Assistant/Associate Professor will teach freshman foundational courses (Written Communication and/or Freshman Seminar). At this time, the Assistant/Associate Professor will teach a Shakespeare elective in alternate years and will develop new electives for juniors and seniors related to the performing arts.

The department seeks candidates whose pedagogy favors close, attentive reading and practical criticism, not theory, and for whom works of literature are complex provocations to the imagination and to ethical inquiry rather than tracts or specimens for cultural studies. The Assistant/Associate Professor candidate should have an interest in western visual and/or musical arts, and a strong record of teaching experience. It is desirable that candidates have experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives.

The candidate's area of expertise should engage and stimulate students' imagination, participation, and scholarship.

The Assistant/Associate Professor will be accountable for ensuring that affirmative action, equal opportunity and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions for which they are responsible and which fall within the scope of the Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity Plan.

Review of applications will begin on Friday, January 6, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled.

Received a follow-up on 2/1 to an earlier inquiry about the status of the search: "The committee has not completed their review of applications. Hopefully this process will not take very long."

4/12: Rejection email indicates offer has been made to another candidate.

4/24 - Rejection email.

Any ideas on why there seems to have been two waves of rejections? I'm new to the market, so I'm just curious if this is common?

I am no expert but sometimes they will reject people immediately who do not meet the requirements/not a good fit (as in the case of some religious schools for example). Then they will have a pool of candidates that they want to interview and a backup pool (sometimes). Those people don't usually get rejected until an offer has been made an accepted. It stinks because if you get a phone interview you then have to wait and wait and wait until a campus interview has been condicted and a cadidate accepts the job. If you can, the best thing to do is to forget about your applications until you hear from them. It can drive you crazy! <--- Many thanks!

Has anyone heard anything?? zero.

- I haven't heard anything, either. But I'm pretty sure they've at least set up a first round of interviews and they don't definitively say anything to anyone else in case candidates don't accept the job or back out, etc. This could drag on and on. That said, it would be nice if people who have heard something updated the wiki.

Makes sense; but they've been decent in the past at getting back to people. I echo your sentiment regarding the wiki: there's flurry of excitement until folks get what's there's - and then silence . . .

- Paranoid silence.

Offer accepted: 2/10

NOTES:

I applied for a job here a few years ago - same position. I didn't get an interview. I wonder if they have high turn over...

I too can't help but wonder about turn over, or something. It's always kind of hard to bring myself to apply for the same position more than once, but I'm doing it anyway.

This is Grinnell's 3rd Renaissance hire in 5 years. The 2 previous hires left after 2 years each.

I would imagine, given Grinell's prestige, this is an excellent stepping stone to R1 jobs.

NOTES:

Just as an FYI: Word is that there is an internal candidate for this position, for whatever that is worth.

Helpful email from Dr. Fremo (12/2) x2: "Thanks so much for applying for our Early Modern British Literature position. We received a tremendous number of applications, all of them excellent, and our search committee enjoyed reading about your project and your teaching experience. Since we received so many applications, it took us a bit longer than expected to review them. I thought it might be helpful, then, to send a brief update on our process.

My earlier message acknowledging your application suggested that we would probably contact applicants to request additional materials at the end of November. Instead, we've decided not to request materials until we've narrowed our pool to 12-15 applicants. In other words, if you haven't heard from us yet, this simply means that we're still reviewing files.

I'll contact our 12-15 finalists personally the week of December 13. At that point, I'll also let everybody else know where they stand in the search. It's been our experience that candidates generally like to get their news as soon as possible, regardless of whether we've invited them for an MLA interview."

NOTES:

11/28: The online application asked for email addresses for references. I filled out the application more than a week ago and used Interfolio's individualized addresses for my various letters, but Loyola has not yet put in a request for letters (I ticked "yes," when they asked if they could send an automated request). In others' experience, do they only send requests for letters if you reach a second stage, or should I be calling Interfolio to see is something went awry? A: I also used Interfolio and the letter requests were immediate and clearly automated. I would look into things. A: I had a similar situation. It took about 10 days before the request appeared on my Interfolio account. My guess is their job site doesn't process request emails automatically but maybe generates them in batches every two weeks or so. A: After reading this, I realized I hadn't received a reference request on Interfolio either and just called Loyola's human resources department (11/30) and was told that references are only requested when the search committee decides to pursue the application further.

Q: Did anyone get a request for recommendations through Interfolio without getting a writing sample request? (12/6) Yes, also 12/6 (x3)

Q: I got a request for a writing sample but have not received a request for my dossier. Is anyone else in my boat? The fact that they're asking some candidates for dossiers and some candidates for writing samples seems odd. Does anyone know why?

12/09: Is it possible that people who are being requested for recommendation letters only (and not writing samples) already have some work published/forthcoming? I can't think of any other reason for the discrepancy. (Well, then I guess it doesn't make much sense to ask only for Writing Samples and not letters.)

NOTES:

Does anyone else find it odd that the job application website has extra slots for documents the ad doesn't ask for? It has required ones for "writing sample," but also "sample of scholarly work" (redundant), and "other," and only a single slot for multiple "syllabi." Plus non-required slots for teaching philosophy etc. Are we just supposed to put the extra syllabi in the extra slots, even though they don't match the document type?

Also -- does anyone know how many and how detailed the sample syllabi are meant to be? And in response to the Q above: I suspect this is a template website for uploading materials for all of their jobs. So I'd suggest just attaching all syllabi as a single document, and leaving the non-required slots blank.

A. 1. The interface is for all jobs. Upload the ones specified in the ad. 2. Syllabi: Well, I'm not on the committee, but here's the best advice I can think of: it doesn't hurt to submit a syllabus like the one you would hand out on the first day of class--course description, required texts, schedule, assignments....things that give the committee an idea of how you frame literary study for undergrduates, how up to date you are with the field, pedagogy, etc., how prepared you are to hit the ground running should you get the job. Take a look at the major requirements and submit a syllabus for a core service course (intro to lit.study, Shakespeare), as well as a specialized seminar course, and possibly one or two more.

Spousal hire, no doubt.

I heard that it was a spousal hire through the grapevine as well.

Or maybe they hired one person to cover both positions?

A: I'm sorry that I didn't see these questions sooner. I am the person who accepted the 17th-century position. There were two totally separate searches for two separate positions. My husband and I received the two offers, so I have been updating the wiki for both of us.

I'm guessing that means that campus visits are scheduled or funding dried up.

-- 1/19 I, a mostly-medievalist, was interviewed for this position at MLA. The Medieval page of the wiki indicates no campus interviews have yet been scheduled.

NOTES:

According to this link, they seem to have hired someone for this position at the Assistant level last year . But they are advertising almost exactly the same position, except at the Associate level, this year? Does anyone know what's going on here?

They hired an assistant last year, who was (and is) a member of the Princeton Society of Fellows, and he will join the faculty in fall 2012, at the end of his fellowship. This is a separate job, for a more advanced person.

The EM group there is small; they could use another person; they can afford a more senior hire; and this approach means they won't be faced with the job candidates they interviewed (but rejected) last year.

It has been the intention of the department for several years to make two new hires, one at the assistant level and one at the associate level. This search for a more senior person has been long-planned and has nothing to do with facing job candidates rejected in last year's search.

This job is not listed on the University of Maryland pages - nor is it on the Employment Opportunities page of the English department. Does anyone know if they are still conducting a search?

  • Often the departments initiate a search before Human Resources can catch up with the listings. Since this was just recently posted on the MLA Job List I would say that it's still on-- you might just have to wait a couple of days for the Univ of Maryland HR department to post on their site. As for it not being on the Department's site-- still, I would wait a couple of days since admin and staff are probably trying to catch up with the semester's start, etc.
  • Agree with all above. Just would add that it also might be a good idea to alert their HR to the issue.
  • Thanks. The advert went up today on both the English department site and the HR site but they are not accepting applications until 9/26.

NOTES:

The job advertisement seems to have been removed from the Chronicle, and isn't appearing anywhere else yet. Does anyone know if the job is still being run?

7/17/11: The job announcement is still posted at UWM HR: http://www.ohr.wisc.edu/pvl/pv_070538.html

From someone in Employment at UW-M English: "Interviewing/campus visits will be conducted prior to MLA, with the hope an offer can be made about the time of the MLA conference. This is a somewhat difference process than has been done in past years, but this is the approach the search committee is taking this time around."

From acknowledgment email: "We will be in contact with you after the initial screening of candidates. We expect the initial screening to be completed by mid-fall." This suggests perhaps that they do plan to interview before MLA.

Question: Anyone know the potential ethical implications if they make an offer to someone at or near MLA? What sort of time frame would one have to make decisions about other offers/interviews?

One Answer: The whole process is clearly designed to avoid competition with other offers; while it is of course impossible to know until you are in the happy position of being given an offer, we can bet that your Madison committee will give you a very firm deadline to approve or reject, and that deadline will be far in advance of any offers which you might get from interviews performed at MLA.

Another: It very well may be that UWM wants to roll like this with this search (i.e. pre-MLA offer). A few schools every year seem to try to do searches like this (although usually not schools of the caliber of UWM). However, it does seem to fly in the face of "best practices" recommended by the MLA: "No candidate should be required to give a final answer before 22 January to an offer of a position with-out tenure for the following academic year. After 22 January, candidates should normally be allowed two weeks to give a final answer to a formal offer." See: "Advice to Search Committee Members and Job Seekers on Faculty Recruitment and Hiring," ADE Bulletin 132 (Fall 2002), pp. 63–65 <http://www.ade.org/bulletin/index.htm>. Maybe that date should be updated since MLA is now in early Jan. - but it seems it should rightly be pushed back, not forward.

A third answer: They might need to make the hire this fiscal year in order to use the Mellon money.

Is this a tenure track or visiting position? The ad doesn't specify. . . Answer: It is tenure track

From the invitation to interview: "Our English department is running multiple searches this year and we were looking at a log-jam of job talks in the spring, so, as chair of the early modern search, I volunteered to run an accelerated search for early modern in an attempt to ease things up. We are not planning to go to MLA, but to bring a few people through to give talks, starting in November.... Please be assured that we will not be making any official job offers until the end of January and we will be scrupulously fair in our subsequent negotiations with our chosen candidate, taking account that he or she might have other offers of campus visits in the spring."

2/2/11: Any news? Has an offer been made?

NOTES:

Does anyone have an update about this post? No -- I received a really nice e-mail from Terri Bourus when I submitted my application last November, but have heard nothing since. I'm wondering if the funding dried up. Is it ever appropriate to e-mail a committee chair and ask for an update?

Word is that the interviews with the finalists have been held already (2/16). Judging from the 2/14 rejection email (above) a decision has been made also.

They're holding interviews with the three finalists in March.

^^^Are these phone or campus interviews?

What is the basis for the claim that they are interviewing three finalists in March? Unless you have been scheduled for one of these interviews, please do not change the headline of this job.
