Benedictine College - Assistant Professor of Theology (or Open Rank)

The Department of Theology at Benedictine College invites outstanding teacher-scholars to apply for a tenure track appointment in Theology starting Fall 2022. The successful candidate should be a dynamic teacher who is competent as a generalist in Catholic theology. Candidates with backgrounds in moral theology are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants should also possess a Doctorate in Theology by the start date. We anticipate hiring at the assistant professor level, but will consider applications for higher ranks from outstanding candidates.

Birmingham-Southern College- Assistant Professor position in Christianity

The Department of Religion at Birmingham-Southern College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Christianity at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2022.  The College’s curriculum is based on close faculty-student interaction in teaching, advising, and research.  The annual teaching load is three classes per semester and an intensive course during January.  The successful candidate will develop courses at the introductory and upper levels.  While the area of expertise is open, special attention will be given to candidates who frame their research and teaching in interdisciplinary and global contexts. Applicants with expertise in Black religious traditions and theology or Christian Ethics are especially welcome.  Ability to contribute to other interdisciplinary programs of the College is highly desirable. The successful teacher/scholar will have an avid interest in pedagogical development, a robust research agenda, and a desire to be an active and engaged citizen of the Birmingham-Southern community as well as a contributing and collegial member of the Religion Department. Eligible candidates must have received their Ph.D.by time of employment.

Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) is a selective residential liberal arts college. The College enrolls approximately 1200 undergraduate students and is a sheltering institution of Phi Beta Kappa. George Mason University - Assistant Professor in Judaic Studies

George Mason University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor in Judaic Studies to begin in fall 2022. The successful candidate will be a core faculty member of the Department of Religious Studies within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Located within the Greater Washington, DC area, George Mason University is a research university designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as an institution of “highest research activity” (R1). Within a 2-2 teaching load, the successful candidate will teach standard introductory comparative religious studies courses, lower through upper level undergraduate courses on Judaic Studies of their own design appropriate for a public university, and upper and graduate level courses on theories and interdisciplinary methods in the study of religion, as well as serve as director of the Judaic Studies minor.

Kenyon College - Visiting Assistant Professor in Buddhism and East Asian religions

University of Cincinnati: Assistant Professor of Modern Jewish Religion and Culture, Jewish Foundation Chair of Judaic Studies

The Department of Judaic Studies in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for the Jewish Foundation Chair of Judaic Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor of Modern Jewish Religion and Culture. This is a full-time tenure-track position, beginning August 15, 2022. Our mission emphasizes a commitment to diversity and to collaborative projects nationally and internationally.

Candidates should be trained and employ theories and methods in the study of religion in their research. Prior to the effective date of appointment, candidates must have a Ph.D. in Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, or a related field. Teaching responsibilities will be a 2-2 load and include Introduction to Jewish Civilization II: 1500 to the Present as well as other courses in the candidate’s field of study. University of Oklahoma - Contemporary American Christianities

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Oklahoma (OU), the flagship public research university in the state of Oklahoma (Carnegie Classification R1), announces a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Religious Studies with a focus on contemporary American Christianities beginning August 16, 2022. The teaching load is 2/2. The successful candidate will have broad training in religious studies with the ability to teach introductory and advanced courses relevant for understanding contemporary Christianity and with reference to issues such as race, gender, or Native communities that may fit the candidate's expertise. This will include a sophomore-level course on Christian traditions. In addition, the successful candidate will also have the ability to teach theories and methods as well as introductory courses in the study of religion. The ideal candidate will show evidence of promise for a robust research agenda. The potential for that research to speak compellingly to a broad public audience is preferred. A completed PhD in Religious Studies prior to the position start date is required. Salary, benefits, and start-up funds are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Texas at Austin: Associate/Full Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Religions

The Department of Religious Studies at The University of Texas at Austin seeks to appoint, beginning Fall of academic year 2022-23, a tenured Associate or Full Professor in the area of Ancient Mediterranean Religions with a focus on Christian Origins, Late Antiquity, and/or Biblical Studies of the New Testament.  The position is part of an active and internationally recognized program in Ancient Mediterranean Religions. We are interested in candidates whose interdisciplinary approaches will contribute to the mission and intellectual life of the Department of Religious Studies, and candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching, research and service.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of research and publication, a dedication to graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentorship, a commitment to service to the department, college, and university levels, and a willingness to contribute to the continued development of a vibrant and collaborative department.

Based on their qualifications, candidates will also be considered for one of two endowed chairs in Religious Studies: the Ronald Nelson Smith Chair in Classics and Christian Origins, and the Louise Farmer Boyer Chair in Biblical Studies. A Full Professor would hold the endowed chair.  An advanced Associate Professor could be a holder designate.  A new Associate Professor would be a Fellow of the Chair. Both endowed chairs come with an affiliation with the Institute of Christian Origins and Antiquity, an organized research unit within Religious Studies.

The University of Tübingen - Assistant Professor in the Study of Religion - Rethinking Global Religion

The contract is initially for four years and will be extended by another two years following a positive interim evaluation. After these six years, there is a final evaluation, and based on its recommendation, the University can offer a permanent position.

The position is within the future Institute for the Study of Religion. It is one of four assistant professorships currently being hired in connection with the University’s ‘Global Encounters’ platform. Established as part of its Excellence Strategy, this platform examines the construction, reconstruction and restructuring of global networks. It focuses on the processes and practices of interdependency and communication, as well as the consequences such global encounters have for the formation of knowledge and communities, which are studied with regard to their decoloniality and their future sustainability. The Global Encounters platform brings together and supports researchers from different fields, to help them channel the growing dynamic at the University of Tübingen toward attracting major external funding for anything from collaborative centers to Clusters of Excellence.

In the context of the interdisciplinary orientation of the Global Encounters platform, the position holder is expected to make theoretically and methodologically sound contributions to the analysis of religious dynamics in their global context from a non-European perspective, regarding the period from the beginning of the modern era to the present, and including postcolonial/ decolonial approaches. In addition to methodological competence, profound language skills and regional knowledge in Asian, African or Latin American contexts is expected; involvement in international academic networks, preferably in the corresponding region, is desired. In teaching, participation in Study of Religion courses currently under development is expected, as well as participation in related courses of study in other disciplines, e.g., in the Master of Arts in Interfaith Studies.

The position has an initial teaching load of two courses per semester, i.e. four hours per week, prior to the interim evaluation, and three courses/six hours thereafter.

Required qualifications include an outstanding PhD or equivalent international degree, publications in international journals, and teaching experience.
