Word on the Street / General Discussion[]

  • 10/26: Hi religious studies and theology people. It doesn't look like there's much activity on this wiki this year, and I'm curious if there's another place that people are reporting job updates and such? I know other fields such as philosophy and classical studies use different websites and was wondering if I'm missing something? Thanks all :)
  • 2/2: which classics websites???
  • 10/28: same question. I've looked around and can't find another site.
  • 10/28: I think this is it, but this site has fallen out of use lately.
  • 11/1: Would someone put this section at the top of the page? Also, have you tried H-Net for jobs? (https://www.h-net.org/jobs/job_browse.php)
  • 11/2 I restored some accidentally deleted content (please make sure you are editing the most recent version of the page, and don't ignore any red warning messages you get when editing) and did some general formatting cleanup. -5120j (wiki moderator)
  • Does anybody know what happened to the job that was listed at Chapman? I went to look at the ad again, since the due date was 12/1, and it's just gone, both on their job site and on other job ad sites.
    • 11/13: I'm wondering the same thing!
    • 11/13: I applied to that position (finished my application early) and received the following three days ago: "Thank you for your interest in the Comparative Religion position at Chapman University.  Unfortunately, due to university budget concerns we are cancelling the search at this point.  We wish you the best of luck in job search." Which is the kind of rejection I love. I mean, we all know the rejection is coming one way or another, but this is the only way it feels more like a tie than a loss. So, already, my record this application year is better than most years! Thank you, Chapman University!
    • 11/13: Aah! Thanks for the update. Disappointing to hear but glad you were able to see it in a somewhat positive light :)
    • 11/13: Yeah, well, without humor, what do we have? May the odds be ever in your favor.
    • 11/13: That's really interesting. The Chapman position was posted like a month ago; had they not considered budgetary concerns prior to posting? Interesting how the position was canned so fast.
    • 11/19: Just checked the wiki and wow! I had been planning on applying to the Chapman one. Yikes.
12/16 Any one hear from TCU about the Christianity job?[]
  • 12/17 I had a first-round interview with them mid-November, and they said they were going to be letting finalists know at the end of December or beginning of January. I have not heard anything yet.
  • 12/17 Same here, thanks.
  • I didn't advance. Good luck to others!

12/20 Anyone hear back from Northeastern about the religion in the U.S. job?

  • I received a rejection letter from them back in February that the position had been filled.

1/5 Any news on campus visits for Northeastern?

12/20 any news on second-round interviews at Rhodes College?

12/23 Wondering if there's any news about the TT Religious Studies position at Northwestern, Early Modern Mediterranean Religion? Can't find anything on the page about it.

  • 1/11 campus visits have been scheduled

12/27 Any word on the politics/environment job at LSU?

  • 01/22 - I received a personalized rejection email in early December, so maybe no word yet is good!
  • 01/04 - any word on campus visits yet?
  • 01/18 - know someone with a campus visit scheduled for next month.

1/22 — Any other early Christian studies scholars on this wiki? I was talking with a friend who said that there seems to be more TT early Christianity jobs than usual this cycle. Do others think this is true? This is my first year on the market, so I don't know. Just curious what others think.

1/25: Any update on the Mt St Vincent job?

1/27 Did any one else apply to the Penn State Early Christianity job? Anyone hear anything yet? — 1/27: Friend had an interview for this one last month - 1/31: any update on this?

1/31 any update on Yale?

2/1: Any update on the Loyola U Chicago New Testament job?

2/11: Any movement on the job at Huron in Ontario?

2/18: any update on the Religion and Social Justice job at the university of Nebraska?

2/23 re: Nebraska, initial interviews scheduled last week

3/2 any news on offers from the Davidson religion and science job?

3/3: Any updates from Georgia State?

4/20: Has the Danforth Center (WashU) begun interviews?

5/3 Has Colgate U invited people for virtual campus interviews?

-> Final interviews take place the week of May 9, with a hire expected immediately.

5/3 Has U Tennessee Chattanooga made an offer?

-> UTC offer under consideration

5/21- what’s with this professor of practice job at the university of Indianapolis? Looks like it’s written for an inside hire but they’re running a full search?

  • 11/3 Dept Chair emailed all applicants to say candidates for preliminary interview will hear from them by 11/10
  • 11/8 - any further updates?
  • 11/9 - nothing yet. anyone else?
    • The email from Search Chair last week was sent out at around 5:30pm, so safe to presume that he tends to get to emails after hours.
  • 11/9 - Looks like their Interfolio page has updated requirements (used to be 7 documents required, now 11 with 3 letters or recommendation and a writing sample). Not sure if this is done automatically or its a good sign?
    • 11/9: (this comment looks like it was accidentally deleted) **I see this too. I would think that only those applicants that they intend to ask for interviews would see this change, since otherwise they'd be flooded with folks submitting extra materials. So far as I'm aware, a Search Committee can modify the interface on Interfolio so that only a sub-group can be asked to submit additional materials. Now, no doubt, it surely is possible (and arguably a bit more direct and simple for those who are not frequent admins on Interfolio) to just modify all. Hard to say what any of this means, but there's a slim chance that if you happen to see the option for more materials, you're on the shortlist and they have not yet sent out formal notifications--which makes sense, since you have to modify the application system to accommodate extra materials *before* inviting candidates to do so. ...does anyone NOT see the option to submit additional materials ??<br />
      • 11/9: I saw that, too, but you can't upload anything to those categories at the moment. I assume that those sections will be enabled for the people they plan to interview (but that's just a guess). Hang in there, everyone!
      • 11/9: saw that too, but I also can't upload anything. Glad I'm not the only one waiting trepidatiously. It would have been kinder to not have 11/10 deadline for "not hearing". While everyone is here, just a q - in the original app, it said to upload 3 contact references - what did people do? Did they just include a PDf with 3 references? What other options were there?.
        • 11/10: They actually sent out an email addressing this, and said that they just needed a PDF with the contact information of each of the three references. I had submitted my application prior to this email and gave them one PDF for each reference.
  • 11/10: just received a rejection email. it said less than 8% of applicants made it to the interview round. given that they said they would interview about 12-16 people, it seems like they received between 150-200 applications. good luck to the rest of you!

The position is within the future Institute for the Study of Religion. It is one of four assistant professorships currently being hired in connection with the University’s ‘Global Encounters’ platform. Established as part of its Excellence Strategy, this platform examines the construction, reconstruction and restructuring of global networks. In teaching, participation in Study of Religion courses currently under development is expected, as well as participation in related courses of study in other disciplines, e.g., in the Master of Arts in Interfaith Studies.

The position has an initial teaching load of two courses per semester, i.e. four hours per week, prior to the interim evaluation, and three courses/six hours thereafter.

Required qualifications include an outstanding PhD or equivalent international degree, publications in international journals, and teaching experience.

Those who have already completed a habilitation will be excluded from consideration for this position.

Training in race and ethnic studies, gender studies and/or postcolonial/decolonial theories, and/or any other relevant critical methodologies is desirable, as are other strengths in globalized and/or historically-marginalized interpretations of Christian texts and practice, particularly those outside Europe and the United States.

Candidates should be grounded in broad theoretical issues regarding the study of religion and should be able to offer courses that are accessible and appealing to undergraduate students representing a broad range of majors with no background in religious studies. They should also be able to a teach a mix of advanced undergraduate majors. In addition, candidates ideally should also be able to offer graduate-level courses for the area of specialization of the M.A. program in Sacred Texts and Lived Religions as well as doctoral courses in Bible, Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity for the DU-Iliff Joint Doctoral Program in the Study of Religion. Finally, candidates should have the appropriate advanced-level training in Greek and any other relevant languages or related textual expertise to be able to support and train graduate students in their area of specialization. The department is particularly interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their teaching, research, and service. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to integrate content and issues relating to, and to work effectively with, ethnically/racially/religiously diverse populations.

A doctorate in religious studies or a relevant field is required prior to appointment. ABDs who cannot provide proof of a scheduled defense date should not apply. A candidate’s doctoral degree may be from religious studies or any relevant department with religious studies training. Please note that we are not a theology or ministry department, and that the University of Denver is a secular institution.

  • 2/21 — Any updates?
  • 2/21: I applied before the original deadline, which was the end of December 2021. They reached out to me on January 14 to say that they were reaching out to my references AND that they were extending the deadline to February 7. They sent an email to my references on January 19, but I haven't heard anything since then.
    • 2/21 — Exactly my situation; thanks for the response! I'll update here if I hear anything back.
      • 2/21: Likewise! The not-knowing is painful, so best of luck to you as we suffer through it together.
      • It's...excruciating in so many ways. Wish this wiki was more active; it would make the process so much easier.
      • 2/21 The call for this one says Christianity but specified language training, which made me think they wanted a more bible focused person (not me). Wonder if they didn't get the kind of apps they wanted.
        • 2/21: Yeah, it's so hard to tell but you may be on to something. The emphasis on language skills may have more to do with the joint program with Iliff than the university itself (especially based on the courses offered). I wish they had been clearer about how much of the position would be devoted to ancient material at Iliff vs. the university. Rather than addressing the job as "knowledge of Christianity. All of it." I've been thinking that they had to have received a TON of applications because it's so broad. Since it's only been two weeks from the revised deadline, perhaps that's why it's taking some time.
        • 2/21 — FWIW, two weeks past the deadline is quite early. In my experience so far, it takes about a month to hear back after the submission deadline for an interview request.
      • 3.14: first-round interviews took place last week through tomorrow.
      • 3.30: any updates?
      • 4.4: Campus visit email went out to at least one person I know of, who was offered dates through the month of April.
