Ashland University -- World Religions and Global Christianity

ASHLAND UNIVERSITY, a regional university historically related to the Brethren Church, announces a tenure track position in World Religions and Global Christianity. Ph.D. required; demonstrated abilities in effective classroom and on-line teaching and course development required; academic administrative experience desirable. Teaching load of eight (8) courses per year, includes sections of the general education World Religions course, intermediate courses in Eastern and Western religious traditions, Global Christianity, and an upper-level course in the area of expertise. One course a semester will be taught online in AU’s extensive Corrections Education program. The position includes oversight of the department’s virtual courses in the Corrections Education program (admin duties come with 2-course reassignment). Carleton College -- Judaism

Carleton College, Department of Religion, seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position in the study of Judaism at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin September 1, 2021.

We are open to a range of specializations and disciplinary methods within the study of Judaism, but all qualified candidates should (a) have primary training in the religious, textual, and cultural traditions of Judaism; (b) be skilled at relating both classical and contemporary Jewish materials to their various historical, sociological, and cultural settings; © have a strong interest and teaching competence in theoretical and comparative issues in the field of religious studies; and (d) be keen to contribute to interdisciplinary programs such as Judaic Studies, American Studies, European Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Environmental Studies, Middle East Studies, and/or Gender, Women’ s and Sexuality Studies. Cornell -- Jewish History

Jewish History in the Americas, 1500-1800  The Department of History at Cornell University, in conjunction with the Jewish Studies Program, seeks applicants for the Slovin Assistant Professorship in Jewish history. Candidates are expected to have expertise in the history of the Atlantic world between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries, with a particular focus on Jewish migration and settlement in the Americas. We welcome all areas of specialization, including religion, race and ethnicity, imperialism and colonialism, commercial exchange and trade, historical geography, diaspora and cultural studies, transnationalism, gender and sexuality, and politics and citizenship. Teaching responsibilities will consist of two courses per semester, including one undergraduate course covering the broad sweep of American-Jewish history, 1500-present, highlighting the history of the Jews in North America.

The Department of Religion at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Asian Religions. Appointment to begin as early as July 1, 2021. We invite applications from candidates who specialize in either Japanese religions or Southeast Asian religions, whose academic specialization lies in religion or in an academic discipline relating to the study of religion. The successful candidate will be grounded in both theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of religion, as well as the relevant primary languages. Qualifications include Ph.D. by the time of appointment, along with a record of outstanding scholarship and effective teaching. Requirements include teaching four courses per year (0-2 per quarter over 3 quarters) and normal department service. Competitive salary, benefits, and research support. Hope College -- Religion and Society

The Religion Department at Hope College seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Religion position to begin on August 1, 2021, specializing in Religion and Society. Candidates are expected to be trained in the analytical and comparative study of religion, with a focus on Islam, Buddhism, Middle East, and/or Africa. Expertise in relevant languages (like Arabic or Pali) is required. Cognate expertise in World Christianity, Gender Studies, and/or Peace Studies may complement a scholarly emphasis on Religion and Society.

The successful candidate will primarily teach lower division courses, including introductory courses on Islam and/or Buddhism, along with occasional upper division courses in the candidate's areas of expertise. The Assistant Professor will teach 12 credits per semester and is expected to participate in co-curricular departmental activities.

Qualifications

A completed Ph.D. is strongly preferred, but late-stage ABD will be also considered. Evidence of excellence in teaching undergraduates and introductory courses is required.

Stanford -- American Religions

The Religious Studies Department at Stanford invites applications for an open rank, tenure track position in American Religions with a focus on race and inequality. 

This search is part of a university-wide initiative in which Stanford seeks to hire as many as 10 strong researchers and scholars who study the significance of race in American society, including the nature and persistence of racial inequality and its consequences. Stanford seeks to support, deepen, and enhance the important research and teaching in these areas long underway on our campus. Appointments may be made in the following schools and departments: Stanford Law School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Stanford Graduate School of Education, and the following departments within the School of Humanities and Sciences: Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, History, and Religious Studies. Stetson University -- Hebrew Bible

Stetson University invites applications for a tenure-track position in biblical studies (specialist in the Hebrew Bible [Old Testament]) at the assistant professor level in the Department of Religious Studies.  

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in biblical studies in hand by September 2021. We are seeking a colleague with a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, an active scholarly agenda, and a willingness to be a strong, contributing member of the Department and the University community. The Religious Studies department is committed to an open and accepting environment in which students of varying backgrounds and aspirations critically engage topics involving race, gender, class, and religion, among others, and encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds and/or experience in these areas to apply.

The teaching load is three courses per semester.  Teaching assignments will include introductory courses in biblical studies and upper-division courses more specifically in Hebrew Bible. Such courses would be expected to support the Jewish Studies program offerings.  The successful candidate should be conversant with biblical studies within Judaism and Christianity as well as specialized segments of the Hebrew Bible. Although specific courses will be based on the candidate’s expertise, the ability to teach courses that satisfy specific general education requirements, such as Culture and Belief, Historical Inquiry, and Personal and Social Responsibility requirements (including courses in Ethical and Spiritual Inquiry, Human Diversity, and Social Justice) is expected. Description The Department of Religion at Tufts University is seeking an assistant professor in modern Judaism commencing September 2021. Assistant Professor - Hebrew Bible - Department of Near Eastern Studies The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Hebrew Bible at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021.

Prospective candidates should have strong philological skills in biblical Hebrew and Aramaic as well as a methodological philological competence in dealing with the Bible's composite texts. A grounding in another relevant language of the ancient Near East is desirable. Engagement with scholarship in one or more other fields in the humanities and social sciences is also expected. These fields include (but are not exclusive to) literary criticism, anthropology, historiography, folklore, history of religion, history of sexuality. The holder of this position should be willing to enter into dialogue with scholars in other disciplines and with the faculty of Jewish Studies who work in later periods. University of California, Irvine -- Ferdowsi Presidential Chair in Zoroastrian Studies

The University of California, Irvine announces an open search for a tenured position (Associate or Full) to fill the Ferdowsi Presidential Chair in Zoroastrian Studies. The Ferdowsi Presidential Chair is an endowed chair established for the purpose of teaching courses in religious studies, and creating a locus of Zoroastrian and Ancient Iranian studies at the University of California, Irvine. The University of California, Irvine seeks a dynamic colleague with a sound record of both scholarly achievement and successful teaching that embraces the full range of Zoroastrian history and tradition. The holder of this position is also expected to have competency in two or more ancient Iranian and Middle Iranian languages such as Avestan, Old Persian, Middle Persian, Sogdian, and Parthian. Knowledge of Persian or Gujrati which encompasses a major part of the Zoroastrian tradition, is also welcome. The candidate should have knowledge of the Zoroastrian textual and the religious tradition from remote antiquity, but also be able to teach courses regarding the Zoroastrians of Iran and India, and those in the diaspora. Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is embarking on a (multi-year) cluster hire initiative to hire multiple faculty across a range of disciplines (History, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Film Studies, and Religious Studies) whose scholarly/creative focus is in the area of Race, Racial Inequality, Social Justice, or Africana Studies. Our goal is to instantiate our values of diversity and inclusion as we build regional and national interdisciplinary strengths in these areas. Given our commitment to community engagement and engaged scholarship we seek to appoint faculty who are deeply imbedded in the communities they study. The position of Assistant Professor of Religion within the Department of Philosophy and Religion is part of this initiative.

This nine-month tenure-track position starting August 2021 carries a teaching load of three courses per term while maintaining an active research agenda in their specialization area. 2020-2021 THEOLOGY JOBS and/or Divinity School Positions - Full-Time / Tenure-Track

Atlantic School of Theology--Biblical Studies

Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, Nova Scotia, intends to hire two new tenure-track faculty members at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to commence in summer 2021 (date negotiable). One of the positions is in Biblical Studies, the other in Pastoral Theology. To fulfill statutory requirements, one (1.0 FTE) of the two appointments must be filled by a Roman Catholic.

In addition, to allow some flexibility around local needs for institutional fit and global demands related to the pandemic, each position may be filled by either one full-time appointment, or two half-time appointments. All finalists will be expected to come to Halifax for on-campus interviews, public health requirements permitting; however, only full-time appointments would be expected to relocate to Halifax. Half-time appointments could be remote positions.

Applicants to the position in Biblical Studies should specialize in New Testament or Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, and should have a strong secondary competence and ability to teach in at least one of the following areas:

• Hebrew Bible/Old Testament (if NT is primary)
• New Testament (if HB/OT is primary)
• Patristics
• History of Christianity
• History of biblical interpretation
• Biblical exegesis/hermeneutics
• Interreligious/interfaith dialogue

Note that no person is expected to teach in all these areas. Rather, each faculty member will contribute courses and leadership in their areas of expertise. Your application should make clear where your primary and secondary expertise lies. If (and only if) your secondary expertise is in Pastoral Theology, please refer to and address the separate listing for that position. AST is not seeking a generalist, but it is interested in candidates with potential for crossover in a relevant theological discipline.

Qualifications

• A terminal degree in New Testament (or else Hebrew Bible/Old Testament)

Founded in 1971 by three founding parties – Anglican Church of Canada, Roman Catholic Church, and United Church of Canada – Atlantic School of Theology began as an experiment in ecumenism and has matured over fifty years into a public university with deep anchorage in its commitment to serve the church. A free-standing university with full provincial authority to grant degrees, AST shares an affiliation agreement with nearby Saint Mary’s University but retains its independence. The faculty feels a sense of dignity and pride in its work, bound together in common purpose to serve our students, our churches, and the broader public good.

A new hire to the Roman Catholic faculty would contribute to the design and delivery of courses in a variety of programs:

• a three-year MDiv degree with on-campus and summer-distance models tailored to the denominational requirements of candidates for ministry in the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada;

Case Western Reserve University (USA:OH) - Nord Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities - Deadline: December 1, 2020

The Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University seeks applicants for The Virginia and Walter Nord Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities.

• The purpose of the Nord Postdoc is to support research in the humanities by providing scholars in the early stages of their careers with the time and resources necessary to advance their work.
• During their time at the Baker-Nord Center, Fellows will pursue a research and writing project for the full academic year.
• An essential feature of the program is that Fellows make intellectual contributions to the CWRU community, through their participation in workshops, lectures, and courses.

Areas of Expertise

• Fellows will be affiliated with one or more of the following departments: English, Philosophy, and Religious Studies.
• We are particularly interested in Fellows whose research explores issues related to Race Studies, Ethnicity, and/or Social Justice.

Duration and Teaching Load

• BNC Post-Doctoral Fellows will be expected to offer an undergraduate course during the spring of their fellowship year, following consultation with their host department.
• The Fellowship may be renewed for a second year, during which candidates will be expected to offer an undergraduate course in each term.

Qualifications

• Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand from an institution other than Case Western Reserve University before the start date of the fellowship
• Ph.D must date from no earlier than 2011.
• Candidates must have a demonstrable potential to contribute to one of the academic departments affiliated with the Baker-Nord Center.

Leiden University -- University Lectureship in the Religious Traditions of Japan

As part of the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), the Japan Studies programme is committed to the integration of disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives, on a solid foundation of excellent language skills. Likewise, the Religious Studies programme brings together expertise in specific religions with a comparative approach that draws on a variety of humanistic and social scientific disciplines. Priorities include cooperation across the full width of (East) Asian Studies and Religious Studies. The local research environment includes an excellent library, and is further enhanced by research networks and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), as well as the Leiden University Centre for the Study of Religion (LUCSoR), and Leiden Asia Centre (LeidenAsiaCentre). 

We offer a parttime, for 0.8 FTE per week, fixed-term position from January 2021 through December 2022, with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.
