2019-2020 RELIGIOUS STUDIES JOBS - Full-Time / Tenure-Track

Tel Aviv University - Assistant Professor in Japanese or Chinese Religion

The Department of East Asian Studies at Tel Aviv University invites applications for a tenure-track position in East Asian Studies with a focus on Japan or China, effective from October 2020.

We seek candidates familiar with current theoretical discourse, with a proven record of excellence in research and teaching, who have published their work in academic journals and presses. Focusing on the core themes of the department, in the following order, may be an advantage: modern and contemporary Japan or China; History of science in Japan or China; Religion and thought in Japan or China.

The position requires teaching in Hebrew, which the successful candidate will be expected to do by the beginning of the third year of employment, and the ability to conduct independent research in the relevant field. Candidates must hold a PhD or receive their PhD before filling the position.

Salary and conditions will conform to Tel Aviv University regulations. Appointment procedures will be carried out according to the rules and regulations of Tel Aviv University and are subject to the approval of the University authorities.

American University, Assistant Professor in Religious Studies (Islam) [1 ]

The Department of Philosophy and Religion in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in religious studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2020. Candidates should be effective teachers and must be strongly committed to excellence in scholarly research. Amherst College  Assistant Professor of Religion (Ancient Christianity)

The Department of Religion seeks a scholar of ancient Christianity for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor, beginning in July 2020. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; 44 percent of our students are domestic students of color. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.  The candidate’s teaching interests should cover the historical sweep of Christianity in the ancient Mediterranean world. Specific areas of teaching expertise and areas of research might include Christian scripture (New Testament and Apocryphal literature), Christianity’s social and intellectual history, its practices of iconography and visual art, traditions of Biblical interpretation, hagiographical literature, artifacts, ecofacts, and archaeological evidence that bears on the written and non-written sources of religion in the ancient Mediterranean world.  We seek a scholar and teacher who is familiar with Western and Eastern manifestations of Christianity, who is fully trained to handle the philological work required to navigate Greek, Coptic, Latin, and Syriac texts or some other combination of languages relevant to a specific field of research within ancient Christianity. We expect the successful candidate to possess both interdisciplinary dexterity and the ability to integrate research and teaching into a liberal arts education. Brandeis University - Christian Studies

Brandeis University invites applications to fill the Robert and Myra Kraft and Jacob Hiatt Chair in Christian Studies, starting July 1, 2020. This is an open-rank, permanent position in the School of Arts and Sciences to be housed in a department (or departments) appropriate to the candidate’s discipline and area of research. We especially encourage applications from scholars of early Christianity with a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean or on Coptic, Syriac, or Arabic-speaking Christians in the first millennium CE. Through this appointment, we aim to expand Classical Studies at Brandeis and to complement our existing course offerings in Mediterranean studies, early Islam, and early Judaism. Earlham College (IN) - Jewish Studies (Chair position; Visiting Assistant Professor, renewable up to three years)

Earlham College invites applications for a Chair in Jewish Studies at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor for a one-year appointment, renewable for up to three years. The appointment begins in Fall 2020. The College seeks candidates committed to teaching at a liberal arts institution that serves a diverse body of students.

Primary duties and responsibilities include teaching introductory-level Jewish Studies courses as well as upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of specialization. A willingness to teach courses of interest that can contribute to at least one of the College’s interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies; Peace & Global Studies; Environmental Sustainability) is highly desired.   

Co-curricular responsibilities (one-third of the position) include coordinating religious activities and observances, engaging and providing support to Jewish students and faculty, participating in interfaith programming, and arranging for Jewish speakers and cultural groups to visit campus.

Harvard University, Islamic Studies [2]

Harvard University’s Faculty of Divinity seeks to make a full-time, tenure track appointment in Islamic Studies. We are particularly interested in a candidate with scholarly expertise either in: Islam in the Americas, Islam in Southeast Asia, or Quranic Studies. The candidate should be competent in the appropriate research languages and conversant with the broader, global history of Islamic religion and culture.

This is a tenure track position. The successful candidate will work closely with students in the Divinity School’s masters programs and the doctoral program in the Study of Religion. It is likely they will also teach undergraduates in the Comparative Study of Religion and graduate students in related departments of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It is expected that this scholar will be in conversation with those in other programs and schools at Harvard critical to Islamic Studies. Openness to our growing program in ministry studies in Islam will be an advantage.

Applicants should also be able to contribute to the Divinity School's degree programs, including its multi-religious Master of Divinity program, and be familiar with forms of analysis that address race, gender, and social location. The doctoral degree must be held by June 30, 2020.

Hong Kong Baptist University, Associate Professor of Ethics (Religious Ethics) [3]

The appointee is expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate degree levels related to Religious Ethics, Philosophical Ethics, or Applied Ethics. The teaching is both for undergraduate General Education and for B.A. in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. He/She is also expected to conduct high-level independent research in the field of Ethics or Applied Ethics, supervise postgraduate students and research assistants, and contribute creatively and professionally to the Department and the Faculty. Administrative duties will be required as assigned by the Department/Faculty.

Applicants should possess a relevant PhD degree with a strong track record of research and teaching accomplishments. Those applying for a Professor rank should demonstrate an outstanding track record of publications and grant capture, as well as strong leadership potential and administrative capacities.

Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of three years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding. Outstanding candidates for the rank of Associate Professor or above may be considered for appointment with tenure.

The Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies (www.icjs.org) seeks a full-time experienced Muslim Scholar. The ICJS is an independent, academic research and educational non-profit devoted to the dual tasks of confronting religious bigotry and establishing models of interreligious engagement. Founded as the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies in 1987, the ICJS incorporated Muslim communities and the study of Islam in 2014. The ICJS is looking for a dynamic scholar and educator who will develop and implement educational programs for non-traditional adult learners and pursue an active research agenda, while simultaneously working in partnership with colleagues and organizational leadership to further integrate Muslim traditions and communities within ICJS. By shaping a new relationship among Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the Baltimore area, the ICJS addresses the contemporary challenges of religious pluralism in scholarship, teaching, and outreach. Our mission is to build learning communities where religious difference becomes a powerful force for good. The Muslim Scholar will be the ICJS’ key point of contact with Baltimore’s ethnically and socioeconomically diverse Muslim communities (African American, South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian). S/he will also serve as a dialogue partner with Baltimore’s Jewish and Christian religious communities. We seek a candidate with a demonstrated commitment to interreligious dialogue, preferably a strong record of interfaith work and competence in the field of Interreligious Studies. While the candidate should have interest and experience in the dialogue among all the Abrahamic traditions, a focused commitment to Jewish-Muslim and/or Christian-Muslim conversations is strongly encouraged.  The ideal candidate will:

Lafayette College - Assistant Professor of East Asian Religions link

Lafayette College in Easton, PA, announces a full-time, tenure-track position in the Department of Religious Studies at the rank of assistant professor, beginning July 1, 2020, with specialization in religious traditions of East Asia.

The Department of Theology and Religious Studies includes twenty-one full-time faculty members.  We serve undergraduate students in the boroughs of Queens and Staten Island in New York City and on the university’s global campuses.  We offer a Master of Arts in Theology on our Queens campus and online.  Our faculty members embrace the teacher-scholar ideal, maintaining active research agendas while delivering excellent instruction in the classroom.  Over the years, several of our faculty members have been selected to participate in nationally competitive summer workshops on teaching sponsored by the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religious Studies.  Our faculty publish widely across of range a of sub-disciplines in theology and religious studies.  They participate actively in the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Theological Society of America, College Theology Society, and the Society of Christian Ethics.  In 2016, the Department secured a grant of nearly $600,000 from the Lilly Foundation to establish the Vincentian Summer Leadership Institute, a summer program that brings high school students for a weeklong residential experience of service and theological education. 

Responsibilities

We seek a scholar with strong interest and ability in undergraduate teaching, a specialization in Religions of South or East Asia, able to teach courses on Hinduism and/or Buddhism.  Course load (3-3) would include introductory courses and more specialized offerings.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a terminal degree in theology or religious studies by the time of the hire, show evidence of effective teaching experience, demonstrate a strong capacity to pursue an active research and publishing agenda, and be committed to the university’s Roman Catholic and Vincentian mission.

The Pacific Theological College (PTC) is looking for a full-time lecturer in the Theology and Ethics department. The position will be based on a potentially renewable 4 years contract starting 15th January 2020. PTC is an ecumenical institution made up 20 member churches of the Pacific. The campus is located on the Suva coast in Fiji and is minutes away from the Suva CBD, shopping centers, cinemas and churches. Tasks

Teaching and Supervision

• Will exercise academic skills expected of a Lecturer in Theology and Ethics

• Will act as academic advisor to all students in the Theology and Ethics department

Qualifications and experience

Required

• A suitable doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in Theology or Christian Ethics.
• Ability to teach and supervise in English.
• At least two years of teaching experience in tertiary level
• Endorsement from a church organisation or mission board where the applicant has previously served

• Understands and openly embraces the diverse worldviews of the college community both in and outside of the classroom and its connection with theology and theological hermeneutics

Wartburg Theological Seminary—a vibrant, innovative, and growing seminary—is seeking an Assistant Professor of Latinx Theology and Ministry to teach as a member of a highly collaborative theological faculty. This position foregrounds the commitment of WTS to emerging theologies and expansive approaches to church leadership. This position requires skill and commitment for teaching both in one’s academic discipline and across disciplines to form all students with competence for global engagement. Because WTS values and supports interdisciplinary teaching, this position is intentionally open to scholars across a variety of academic disciplines, including biblical studies, practical theology, systematic theology, church history, and missiology.

Candidates should be thoroughly grounded in their own academic discipline, responsible to extant scholarship, and teach from a clearly theological perspective. Candidates should be qualified to teach both required courses and electives in the Masters and TEEM certificate curricula, including team teaching with other faculty colleagues. This professor will oversee the Hispanic Ministry Concentration and should connect Latinx Theology and Ministry with contemporary global realities.
