    • I wonder if they will regret not posting a deadline for submissions?! (11/9)
    • In the email confirmation of receipt of my application (10/26), they indicated that they would receive aplications through December 8 and then begin review.
    • Received an email to arrange a meeting at AAR. (11/16) x 2
  • Any more news on this? (12/12)
  • No news. I am wondering too. (12/13)
  • They've been reviewing for less than 4 days. (unless they started reviewing on Saturday, in which case, less than 6 days).  They have Christmas shopping to do too, as well as exams to give, papers to grade, etc.
    • They've apparently been reviewing as applications have come in... enough at least to interview a few people at the AAR three weeks ago.
    • Formally, though, their deliberations only started on the 8th. They can't start calling people they interviewed at AAR for on-campus interviews if they're telling candidates they're accepting applications until the 8th.
  • Received phone call invitation for brief on-campus interview. N.B., this is not a full campus interivew, but just a 90-minute in-person interview with the committee in January. Full on-campus interviews will follow after they use these interviews to narrow the list. (12/18)
    • Are these preliminary campus interviews just for local applicants? I can't imagine that they'd fly people out for such a short interview.
    • Not just for local applicants. Yes, it is a bit odd.
      • Bizarre. Maybe a good question to ask is how they are doing financially. Sounds a bit spendthrifty to me.
    • Recived invitation via phone call. I understand the interview to be along the same lines as the above candidate. An introduction to the larger committee/faculty. (12/18)
  • Any more news? (2/19)
  • Campus interview scheduled (email, week of 2/18)
  • Phone call. I was passed over, offer was/will be made to another candidate. Congrats! (3/26)
  • Offer made and accepted. (3/27)

Emory University, Candler School of Theology - Religion and Human Difference[]

Candler School of Theology at Emory University invites applications and nominations for a full-time faculty position to address fundamental issues of religion and human difference. Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2013. Made either at the level of a tenure-track assistant professor or an associate professor with tenure, this appointment will commence with the fall 2013 semester. Made possible by support from the Mellon Foundation, this interdisciplinary position seeks to bridge religious and theological inquiry based in the humanities with other disciplines, including the social and natural sciences, through new fields of study, critical approaches, and analytical tools. It focuses on ways in which religious traditions and communities engage dimensions of human diversity, including but not limited to race, gender, generation, ethnicity, disability, class, and sexual orientation, through methods that may be comparative-historical, ethical, ethnographic, literary, phenomenological, philosophical, or theological.

The humanities scholar appointed to this position will be committed to theological education, take part in the Contextual Education program of Candler School of Theology, and teach in its M.Div., M.T.S., and Th.M. degree programs. They will participate in the Ph.D. program offered by Emory University’s Graduate Division of Religion, and in Emory’s Interdisciplinary Humanities Collaborative.

Further information on this position may be found athttp://www.candler.emory.edu/about/positions-available.cfm. Applications and nominations may be sent to Religion and Human Difference Search, c/o Ms. Brenda Roberts, Manager of Faculty Development, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322, or email documents in Microsoft Word to brenda.roberts2@emory.edu. • Acknowledgement of receipt by email (1/11/13 & 1/22/13)
  • Email request for writing sample (1/24/13 x3) + 1 [updated 1/31]
    • Did those who received writing sample requests already have relevant, published materials available that SC could have otherwise accessed?
      • yes, i did.
  • This is a ridiculously broad, interdisciplinary search. For those of you getting follow-up (writing samples and interview requests, etc) it would be great if you could post your area of study and specialization.
  • I didn't apply for this position, but this kind of broadly-stated position is one no one wants to get their hopes up about, because they could want anything.  It might be ridiculous, but that's show business, kids.
  • "that's show business, kids" = priceless.
  • Don't forget to tip your waitresses! I'll be here all week.
  • Invitation to campus interview (02/15/13)
    • Area of specialization?
  • Rejection emails sent. One of the most remarkable administrative email fuck ups I've seen. (4/26/13)

    • [1/25] Anyone hear anything on this yet? Nothing as of 1/26

      • Selected for first round phone interview on 2/6
      • rejection letter: was not selected as finalist (2/16)
      • a friend of mine received and accepted the offer at end of March

This tenure-track appointment will be at the associate or assistant professor level (in the former case, tenure upon appointment is possible). The appointment will begin in August, 2013. The Florida State University is a Public Records Agency and an Equal Opportunity/Access/Affirmative Action Employer.
    • Emailed that the position has been filled (11/20) (x2)
    • Does anyone know how they filled this position only three weeks after the deadline for applications passed? Clearly they could not have interviewed at the AAR.
    • From what I understand, they already had a more senior scholar in mind. His on-campus visit happened even before AAR. I wish they had not asked us to send our transcripts (obviously, that was an added expense to the application process). As a department who has struggling PhD students desperate for jobs, they should have known better. (x3)
    • Offer made to second candidate and declined.
    • So did the search fail?
    • Rejection letter received by email; position has been filled (once more). (2/27)
    • So did they ever really hold an actual search? It sounds like they asked for applications, but then just gave it to who they wanted. Or the third person they wanted. For a program that really wants to be viewed as top tier, this really seemed like amateur hour down in Tallahassee.

  • Request for AAR interview via email (11/5)
  • Request for Skype interview (since I'm not attending AAR) via email (11/2)
  • Received email verifying that they had fixed the short-list for AAR interviews but were keeping my file open depending on how the interviews go (11/12) x7
  • Did anyone get the email describing it as a "Faulty Search"? I thought that was funny, but I'm not very mature. x4
  • campus invites went out
  • AOS for those of you invited to campus?
  • offer made and accepted

  • Anyone hear (e.g. confirmation of receipt of application, etc.) anything yet?
    • I'm sure we can blame Sandy for some delays. They may need some time...
    • Only an email confirming they have received my application, back in mid-October
    • Has anyone heard anything yet? I'm beginning to wonder if Sandy may have done more than just delay the search.
    • They are also looking for a new "dean and president"... could this help explaining the delay?
    • Not heard anything and have pretty much given up, but I note that they've at least completed the search for a dean & president: link . (2/3)
  • Skype interview request by e-mail (4 Feb)

Skype interview request as well (4 Feb)

  • rejection via email (2/5) (x2)
  • This is odd: received an email that they're still working on their short list, and will have one within a week. (2/5)
  • Anyone else not hear anything? (and to whomever deleted my previous comment to the same effect, not cool). (2/12)
  • If you had a Skype interview:  have invitations for campus visits gone out yet?  (2/27)
  • Rejection (following Skype interview) by e-mail (13 March)
  • Does anyone know what's going on with this? Seems a farily odd and protracted interview scheme took place (and is possibly taking place?). I never heard anything, but I'm farily certain they lost my application materials. Just wondering if a hire has been made. (4/22)

  • Any news from anyone on this?
  • Other than an e-mail back in Sep. confirming that all application materials had been received, nothing.
  • Skype interview requested. [posted 10/27]
  • I just received from them the single nicest rejection e-mail I've ever had (and one that indicates they have drawn up their list of finalists). (11/8) x3
  • Those of you who got rejections, did you have skype interviews or nothing?
  • I received nothing except a confrmation e-mail when all materials were received and then as others have noted, a very nice rejection via e-mail.  Nothing else.  (11/30)

Grinnell College - Gender and Religion in Asia[]

  • Tenure-track position in the Department of Religious Studies (Gender and Religion in Asia), starting Fall 2013. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible. While the area specialty for the position is Asia broadly defined, the successful candidate will be able to teach courses on gender, Buddhism and an introductory course on religions of East Asia. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. The College’s curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The teaching schedule of five courses over two semesters will include both introductory and upper-level courses; every few years one course will be Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented toward a special topic of the instructor’s choice).
  • To be assured of full consideration, all application materials should be received by November 1, 2012.
  • Why were previous posts deleted? Speculation that interviewees would be notified this weekend proved correct. Previous post read "AAR interview scheduled (11/9)." I'll x2 that.
    • A: These are the posts that seem to have been accidentally deleted on 11/10:
  • Has anyone heard back from Grinnell?
    • Not I (11/8 x5)
    • Rather soon, don't you think?
    • AAR is next week, but nobody seems to be in any hurry to schedule interviews..
    • If somebody doesn't hear tomorrow, I would assume they just aren't doing them. My own, 97.5% unscientific impression is that AAR interviews are less common than they once were. Skype is almost as good and requires less unpleasantness...or at least I suspect that's the logic.
    • Rumor alert** they might be letting folks know about interviews this weekend.
    • AAR interview request (11/9x3).
  • Appears "Gender" in this description was a code for wanting to hire a woman.
    • Their current department is all men.
    • They're VERY serious about their new hire being able to teach gender-focused courses.
    • Yes-- but being able to teach gender-focused courses (which is about gender-- not "female") is not contingent upon a person being male, female, transgender, etc.
      • Agreed. My comment about gender-focused courses was intended as a rebuttal to the "code" comment.
  • Has anyone been called for a campus interview yet?
  • No, but they said people would be contacted in mid-December, so it could be a while yet.
  • Phone call to arrange campus visit (12/14).
    • Thanks for the post. Now I can stop holding my breath. Good luck! (x2)
    • May I ask your AOS?
    • East Asian Buddhism
  • Three finalists on campus for job talks, etc., 1/24, 1/28, and 1/31
  • I had an interview with them in November. They didn't even send me an email letting me know they weren't interested. Pfft.
    • This is normal. Most departments do not notify people until AFTER the position is filled. This is why we have sites like this Wiki page to alert people in the interim.
  • Any word on this one?
    • They are going fishing again (pursuing other candidates beyond the initial 3).
    • Thanks for letting us know!
  • Hmm... They couldn't hook any of fish or they threw them all back?
  • I wonder whether they are planning to continue the search this year, or repost for next year?
  • If they're not satisfied with ANY of their applicants, there's something going on there. Future interested parties beware.
  • I'm didn't apply for this job, am not in this area, and know literally less than nothing about this search, but searches can fail for all kinds of reasons - departmental needs are complicated and also constantly changing.  You just never know.
  • I was under the impression that this isn't that unheard of- that there are many different factors involved and sometimes they just have to go back to the drawing board.
  • It's reasonably common, yes.
  • I had an interview with them back in November, and I immediately got the impression that they were not exactly sure what they wanted. Although I don't do East Asia, they clearly wanted someone to take over the teaching duties of a professor about to retire who does teach East Asia. They kept asking me how I might teach a course on East Asian religions even though it's not my expertise. Nice guys, though.
  • I am not a candidate for this position and have no idea what's going on with this search, but see that their orig job description clearly states they want someone who can teach East Asian religions/Buddhism. I don't think it's that common to go fishing again. It happens of course, but barring an unanticipated change in the structure of the department (a retiring faculty member falls under the rubric of "anticipated"), it more often reflects the inter-personal dynamics of the committee and/or department, e.g. power-struggles, etc. Searches are expensive and failed ones for reasons other than an unanticipated change, especially in an era where there is an abundance of highly qualified candidates for any given job, can reflect poorly on the department, especially if a pattern emerges.
  • Anyone receive a rejection letter/email? Asked 4/30.
  • Not yet. (x3)
  • Just received an email notification that the search is closed and will re-open next year. [posted 5/8]

We fully intend to inform candidates of their status in the search by the middle of December 2012." Impressive! I wish more universities did this.

    • I was wondering this too. They want evidence of creative teaching experience, do you think they want course evaluations in the "dossier"?
    • Some Universities have a dossier service which keep copies of your recommendation letters on file and then send them out to search committees at your request so that you don't have to pester your recommenders once a week. The "dossier" is just a collection of recommendation letters.
      • Anyone have the job listing for this? I had it but lost a bunch of things and now can't find it posted anywhere! Has it been pulled?

Indiana University of Pennsylvania - Christianity[]

  • Position: The Department of Religious Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Christianity at the Assistant Professor rank beginning August 2013. We seek a scholar who is committed to undergraduate liberal arts education, and who specializes in an aspect or aspects of the history, writings, or traditions of Christianity. In addition to upper level courses in his or her specialty, the person to be hired will also be expected to teach introductory courses in religious studies, such as "World Religions" and "Introduction to Religion."
  • Qualifications: Ph.D. required by the time of appointment. Ongoing research and publications appropriate to one's area of specialty are expected, and teaching experience is preferred. Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interviews, which may include a teaching demonstration.
  • Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate courses in the Department of Religious Studies, advise students in the undergraduate program, engage in scholarly work in the field, and participate in related university and community services.
  • How to Apply: Send letter of application, curriculum vitae, copies of graduate transcripts (official transcripts required before hiring), evidence of teaching effectiveness, and three letters of recommendation to: Dr. Tawny Holm, Search Committee Chairperson; Department of Religious Studies; 452 Sutton Hall; Indiana University of Pennsylvania; Indiana, Pennsylvania 15705. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2013, and continue until the position is filled.
  • Receipt of application materials via mail (12/14) (x4)
    • Isn't it odd to be asked for proof of citizenship and all that before an interview, let alone before hiring? (12/18)
    • It's illegal, but it happens all the time (12/19).
    • Illegal!? I am not turning that information in till I know I am a candidate. If that keeps me out, so be it. (12/19)
    • Seriously, before getting worked up read the letter again: The Employment Eligibility Verification form "is enclosed for informational purposes and should not be returned." They are not asking for proof of citizenship or anything else other than the vita supplement at this point.
      • I thought this statement meant that you need to submit proof of employment eligibility, but not the employment eligibility form (i.e. the instructions).
  • Has anybody been invited to interview, or heard how many they are interviewing?
  • No, I haven't heard anything (1/17).
    • Is it possible they weren't able to arrange the interviews before the end of the Fall term?  The letter indicating receipt of materials came pretty late, which could indicate they got a late start once they organized and sifted through the application materials.
  • Any developments?
    • Still nothing.  But their Spring semester begins today (1/28).  I figure there are three possibilities: 1.) they weren't able to arrange interviews before the end of the Fall term, so it will be on their agenda early in the Spring semester; 2.) they arranged interviews and people just haven't posted that here (that seems unlikely given the history of this WIki); 3.) they've had to cancel their search for some reason (funding didn't come through, etc.).  If I had to bet, given their late deadline and the nature of academic committees, my money would probably be on the first option.
  • Seriously, has nobody heard anything?  Or are you interviewees just being coy, watching the rest of us squirm?  In all seriousness, is this search still moving forward?
  • I haven't heard anything either - it might mean that they're taking a while, or the money didn't go through, but it might also mean that the interviewees just aren't even checking the wiki.
  • A very close friend of mine interviewed for a different position there last week.  He asked the Dean about this position b/c he knew I had applied.  Apparently the Dean has approved the list of applicants to interview, so it sounds as though the search is definitely going forward.  I just don't know if anyone has been invited to interview yet.
  • Invited for campus interview in early March (2/12).
  • Candidate has been hired. Rejection letter received. (4/9)

The successful candidate will be an exceptionally dynamic teacher who generates student interest in our religious studies curriculum and will be able to teach the following: a) upper level undergraduate courses in at least two major religious traditions other than Christianity; b) Religion and the Human Quest, an introductory core course that explores what it means to be human in relation to the sacred; and c) an upper level course on interfaith dialogue. The ability to teach courses that place Christianity into dialogue with other religious traditions would be helpful. In addition, faculty members across the disciplines in Regis College develop and teach interdisciplinary, integrative core courses on themes such as justice and the common good, the search for meaning, diversity, and global environmental awareness. Rollins College - Religious Studies (VAP)[]

  • The Department of Religion and Philosophy at Rollins College, a comprehensive liberal arts institution in Winter Park, Florida, invites applications for a 2 year visiting position in Religious Studies, with the possibility that the position may be converted to a tenure-track appointment. This full-time visiting assistant professor position will begin in August 2013. We are seeking a teacher/scholar with academic training in Christianity, who could also offer a variety of courses, which might include New Testament, Religion in America, Religious Ethics, Religion and Literature, Women and Religion, Religion and Science, or an introduction to Islam. Responsibilities: the expected teaching load for this position is six courses, distributed over a two-term academic year.
  • Review of applications will begin Fall 2012, and continue until the position is filled. Interested applicants must apply online via the College's employment website: www.rollinsjobs.com.
    • Question: under the listing for additional details on AAR's posting, they selected an option for "Religious commitment/affiliation (bona fide occupational qualification)" as a "Required Attribute" (under Ph.D.). This is surprising for several reasons: (1) Rollins has no religious affiliation; (2) they do not mention anything about religious commitments/affiliations in the actual description; (3) they include "religion" in their non-descrimination policy. My understanding is that a "bona fide occupational qualification" means that they are allowed to discriminate on this basis because it is an essential attribute of the job. So, does anyone have any insight into whether this means they will only hire someone with a religious affiliation and will not consider someone without an affiliation?
    • Is it possible that someone in HR simply clicked the wrong box when posting the ad? Might be worth calling Rollins HR ...?
  • Emailed to schedule AAR interview [posted Oct. 26] x3
  • Any news on this position?
  • Campus invites sent out (12/17). (x2)
  • For those who got campus invites, what are your research areas?
  • Anyone know how many campus invites total?
  • Offer made and accepted.

  • Deadline for receipt of applications will be Wednesday, September 5, 2012 Monday, October 1, 2012. All applications must be made online at jobs.slu.edu and must include: a letter of application, curriculum vitae, one sample of scholarly work, and a sample course syllabus. Please have three letters of reference sent by mail to Dr. Jay Hammond, Chairperson, Department of Theological Studies, Saint Louis University, 3800 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63108-3414. Email recommendations sent to theology@slu.edu. Top candidates will be interviewed by invitation only at AAR/SBL in Chicago.
    • The website says the deadline is October 1st - why is September 5th given here?
    • Sept. 5 was the original date given in the ad when it was first posted in July. All extant versions of the ad have now been updated with an Oct. 1 deadline, so the deadline has also been updated above.
    • Any interviews calls or letters of rejection? (10/22)
    • Nothing yet. (10/23) (x2)
    • I got an email on 10/18 saying that I was "among the top candidates" but that they needed answers to some supplemental questions, which were to be emailed back by tomorrow (10/25). The email said that based on the various candidates answers to these questions, a long-list will be made for telephone interivews at the end of October, following which will be made a short-list for campus interviews in early December. The email further said that there would be no AAR interviews.
      • I say bogus. The job ad clearly stated AAR interviews and yet you magically received an email stating otherwise while the rest of the applicant pool hears nothing! I say to you, "among the top candidates," your post is bogus because no search committee would say such a thing, especially this early in the process!
      • "Rest of the applicant pool"? The posters and lurkers here are unlikely to be more than a small fraction of it. And I'm sorry to say, but absence of communication from the search committee is the norm, not the exception. Last year for those jobs that I didn't make the second round I often never heard back at all, and only through the good graces of the people on this site did I learn that things had progressed.
        • This is not my field and I didn't apply for these jobs, but I happen to know several people in the department, and I can confirm, completely independently of what the previous poster has said, that in fact this search is *not* doing AAR interviews (despite the plan stated in the ad -- the systematic theol. search *is* doing AAR interviews, but not Asian Religions), and a short list for phone interviews for Asian Religion search has been developed (as of late last week). The poster who reported the email did not deserve to be attacked for reporting his/her experience (which I know to be accurate from other sources), and I would just suggest this site will work a lot better if everyone is given the benefit of the doubt and addressed with a spirit of generosity. [10/31]
        • A shortlist has been invited for campus interviews.
        • When was the shortlist for campus interviews sent?
        • I don't know. What I do know is that one person has come to campus, and two more are coming before mid-December.
        • Offer has been made and accepted.

Southern Methodist University - Christian Theology[]

  • Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, seeks a faculty member in Christian Theology #050174. This is a full-time, tenured or tenure-eligible position, with rank open.
  • Position begins with the fall term of 2013. Apply online at www.interfolio.com/apply/11541. To ensure full consideration the application must be submitted by October 31, 2012, but the committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled.
  • To view the full job description, visit our website at www.smu.edu/Perkins/FacultyAcademics/FacultyOpenings.
    • Confirmation of application and request to fill out Affirmative Action form. (10/9)
    • Received invitation to SMU-Perkins reception at AAR (10/30). Last year many candidates appear to have worked themselves up into a tizzy about this. This just appears as a general invitation to come schmooze. (x5)
    • Any applicants to Perkins here who did *not* receive this "general" invitation to their reception?
      • I did not receive the invitation, but I also applied at the very last minute (10/31) x3
      • I did not apply to this job, so I have no skin in this game. However, I was one of the applicants for last year's EC seach. They invited us all—before interviews had been announced or decided—to the AAR reception, and I must say, it was quite awkward. All the applicants inevitably found each other, and talk quickly turned to things like, "So, I see that you applied for this job too. Ok...How's that going?" What made matters worse was that neither the SC chair nor any members of the SC (as far as I could tell) attended the reception. Talking with other SMU faculty as you do as drinky parties, I quickly learned (as other applicants did) that no really expected our presence, or really knew why we were there. Afterwards, I narrated the event to my confused advisor and other faculty members, who responded with things like, "So, wait. Why were you invited to this thing again?" At any rate, I did not land an interview, and aside from the three free beers (Anchor Porters, at that!) I had while there, the reception was a waste of time. I suppose SMU feels like the invitation is a friendly gesture, but it's one made at the cost of an uncomfortable and perplexing experience. My two cents.
      • Thanks for this perspective. It's outrageous to hear that the SC chair or member did not attend - an invitation like this inevitably raises expectations and that seems deeply careless. Perhaps this weekend will be different.
    • Anyone else have a "wonderful" time at the reception?
    • SMU's "informal" reception interviews are awkward, unprofessional, and unfair to the candidates. They have to put a stop to the practice. It puts the candidates in an impossible situation. They don't know what to do, how to act, or who to speak with. I'm sure SMU believes it's a comfortable, non-threatening environment for introductions, but it's not. Candidates should not have to compete with each other in person, even if, ostensibly, it's only informal. We all know it's never informal. People familar with the powers that be should gently tell them to stop. Also, the AAR should be notified of the practice.
    • Any news? (12/04).
    • The Chair said they are still reviewing application materials (12/05)
    • Don't expect campus interview news until the New Year (12/14).
      • Yes, but don't they have at least phone interviews before scheduling campus interviews?
      • Has anyone had phone interviews? (12/17)
      • As this is open-rank, I suspect they may be pursuing first the tenured faculty who have applied, and if they don't find the right fit, then perhaps they'll move onto those who would be hired at Assistant-level. This may be why nothing is being reported here, because it doesn't seem that Associates are much involved on this site. Or maybe they really haven't made any moves, and it will all come in January. (12/18)
    • Just received very nicely worded rejection email stating that 3 finalists have been invited for campus interviews (01/15) (X3)
    • Agreed, thoughtful rejection letter.
    • Any word on rank of invitees (assistant, associate, etc)?
    • What is happening with this search?!
    • at least two invitees are at assistant level...
    • An offer has been made and accepted

    • Amen! I applied in mid-June.

    • 9/28/12 This posting disappeared from the AAR listing. Anyone know if the search has been cancelled?
      • Just e-mailed the department chair to ask.
      • And, a mere five minutes later, I got a reply. The search is still open.
      • Does anyone know if they'll be interviewing at AAR/SBL?
  • Received a letter in the mail acknowledging receipt of application (10/20/12) (x3, 10/30/12)
  • AAR interview request by telephone (10/31/12) x 6
    • For those who received requests for interviews: given the broad nature of the posting, what area(s) do you specialize in? (11/2)
    • Early Christianity (11/8) (x2)
  • Emailed rejection. 170+ applicants. (11/6) x7
    • Stunned that I did not get called for an interview. (x4)
    • If you're stunned, you must be new to the job market. It's not equitable, it's not objective, and it's not predictible. Rather, it's capricious, driven by politics and institutional factors beyond your control. Nothing in the job market will surprise you once you realize that fact. Also, you're up against 170 applicants. Do you really think you stand out so clearly against, say 30 stellar applicants? It's time to temper expectations: the market's flooded with talent. Expect nothing.
    • Surprised as well. It would be helpful to know the specializations of those interviewed.(x2)
    • And I was surprised that I was called for an interview: selecting 10-15 to interview out of 170 seems a daunting task, however you cut it. My own specialization is historically very broad (though with an ancient focus) but constructive in method.
    • I think a lot of people were stunned. I think part of it is that this job ad was designed so vaguely that everyone was able to read themselves into it. I think people actually trained to teach "American religious history" have the most cause to be stunned. That criterion in particular made this ad very weird. It seems that they didn't really know what they wanted. (agreed!)
    • Yep ... It seems to me that they may have advertised for a generalist but wound up with something more specialized in mind, at least by the time they were evaluating apps. If it's American church history or patristics, I can understand my not making the cut.
    • I believe there was an implicit emphasis on be able to teach. Although vague in description a further read of the school shows that all the faculty members teach a variation of this course (sounds like its a required course that every faculty member needs to be able to jump into teach)
  • Has anyone else just not heard anything? I just received my confirmation letter (dated 10/11, but sent 11/5) and have not yet received my rejection email or a phone call. (11/8)
    • I have not been invited for an interview or received a rejection letter, but I did receive a confirmation letter some time ago. (11/8)
    • I did not even receive a confirmation letter. Submitted around 10/10. (11/11).
    • Any news post-AAR? (11/28).
    • they told me it would be at least two weeks before I would hear back from them about an on campus visit (that's *if* I made it to the next round). I'm not expecting to hear anything until at least Monday. (11/29)
    • still waiting... (12-3)
    • email from chair: didn't get on campus interview (x3)
    • Campus Interview (x2) (please remember to include the date you posted this)
    • offer made and accepted

    • email RE: AAR interview 11/6
    • rumor mill-- they are looking to hire a woman for this position
    • Is this rumor based on anything more than the observation that the department as stands is 90% men?
    • 11.26 - Email invitation for a Skype interview this week. This is after having already had an AAR interivew. Apparently the full search committe could not be at the AAR, and they are doing these Skype interviews before settling on the short list.
    • Wait, are you saying you were interviewed twice? Once at AAR and again by Skype? I'm confused.
    • Thats right - once at AAR, and now again by Skype. I should add that I do not know if this is something somehow particular to me or only a few people, or they are doing to this as a kind of "medium-list" in between the long and the short. So I don't think that not being asked for a Skype interview necessarily means anything at this point. But who knows, really.
    • It totally means something--even just getting chosen for an AAR interview means something. Good luck and best wishes!!
    • Got a phone call for a campus interview 12/7 (x3)
    • Just out of curiosity, did anyone get a campus interview who did *not* have a Skype interivew subsequent to the AAR interview?
    • Nope.

    • Quick acknowledgment of application (less than 24 hours). Interesting step in the process: they will send out a letter and questionnaire to potential candidates, and select candidates to interview based on the responses. (9/28, [x4] 10/15)
      • To be clear: you emailed your app (as they request) and got an acknowlegment that it had been received within 24 hours with an indication that you'd later get a letter and questionnaire? When (about) did you email your app? Thanks.
      • Yes, except that the letter and questionnaire will go out to potential candidates, not everybody. My sense is that this is how they will select their interview candidates. Entry above edited to indicate date (sorry!).
    • Has anyone actually recieved the "questionnaire" at this point?
      • Yes (10/31 x3) Essay answers to their three questions are due Nov. 15th, after which they will schedule phone interviews.
        • What is the AOS of those who received the questionnaire?
        • Americanist with broad teaching experience
        • Comparative Religious Ethics
      • Nope (11/6) x9
      • The very quick acknowledgment letter explaining the process also said that this is a "lengthy process" and one should not expect to hear back from them any time soon.
        • Just to clarify slightly: the acknowledgment letter said that the number of candidates who apply determines how long it will be until the "questionnaire" is sent to selected candidates, and that the evaluation of these questionnaires can be a lengthy process so it might be a while between submission of one's answers to the questionnaire and hearing back again whether or not you've been selected for an interview.
      • Any follow-up from those who received questionnaire and responded? Any sense if they are still in the process of making initial contact with applicants? (x2 11/28)
      • To those who received a follow up on 11/28, was it a request for a phone interview?
        • I don't think anyone has reported a follow-up.  We were asking if anyone had heard anything post-questionnaire.  I haven't as of 12/10.  It would be nice to hear after taking the time to do that extra step. (agreed - my intent in asking about follow-up too. Thanks for clarifying. 12/10)
        • Heard from a colleague that they have been doing phone interviews this past week. (12/12)
    • Email rejection, stating that they have invited people for campus interviews along with a generic statement about how my application stood out from the large applicant pool (they sent that to everyone I think). (12/18) (x2) [Actually, I have heard nothing as of 12/28--I assume my application and extra essay writing was simply lost--bummer I guess].
      • At least they thanked us for spending the extra time answering their essay questions.

  • I applied and they asked my references for letter within two days.  Anyone else apply?
  • they also asked for my references to send letters (x7)
  • any idea when people might hear if they are candidates/have interviews?
  • I'm going to guess at least a month, if not more.  This is based on nothing other than my experience with the market in general.
  • Anyone heard anything (since we are past the proverbial "one month" mark?) (2/15)
  • Nothing yet. I hope we hear something soon, it's getting late in the season for tenure-track appointments (2/15).
  • Couple of things to keep in mind that might be impacting their response time: 1) they are running multiple searches; 2) Canadian universities are typically behind schedule in comparison to U.S. searches; 3) next week is their "reading week" (Canadian spring break).
  • Any updates? (3/6)
  • Nothing yet--anxiously waiting...(3/6)
  • I worry that the search has been cancelled for budgetary reasons... It's just been such a long time since the deadline! (3/7)
  • I heard they have scheduled or have completed two campus interviews. Time for us to move on (3/21).
  • Thanks for the update ... it will be interesting to see who they hire (3/23)

    • The Jewish Thought search ended awhile ago. Any updates on the Islam VAP position?
    • Does this search have any long-term implications or just a 1 year sabbatical replacement?

Yale Divinity School - Philosophy of Religion[]

  • Yale Divinity School seeks to make a tenure track appointment in the field of Philosophy of Religion to begin July 1, 2013. In an ecumenical environment Yale Divinity School prepares students for ordained ministry in diverse Christian churches and for a wide range of professional involvements, including higher education, law, medicine, the arts, management, and public service. A Ph. D. or its equivalent and strong potential as a teacher are required. The successful candidate should have expertise in metaphysics and epistemology as these apply within the philosophy of religion and philosophical theology, and should be conversant with the Christian theological tradition together with the philosophy of religion more broadly construed.
  • A letter of application with curriculum vitae, at least three letters of recommendation and a brief writing sample should be submitted to Dean Gregory E. Sterling, Yale Divinity School, 409 Prospect Street, New Haven, CT 06511-2167. Review of applications will begin on November 1st, 2012.
    • Email indicating that the search has been suspended, perhaps to be reopened next year. (11/7)
    • Wait, I'm confused: yesterday there was a note saying that someone had contacted the search committee and the job search was still on. Was that information incorrect?
      • This is the prior information, which seems to have been accidentally deleted on Nov. 10:
        • I inquired and was told the search is still very much in process and that interviews will be held soon. (11/8)
        • Very odd disparity here...curious what is actually going on
          • perhaps the first comment above was actually about the search in Religious Studies below
    • I posted on 11/8. To my knowedge (based on a response to an email asking if the Philosophy of Religion position was suspended), the search is still on-going.
    • They are currently scheduling 1st round interviews (to be held in Nov and Dec)
    • So has anybody actually been contacted about this? Are they interviewing at the AAR?
    • They'll interview at AAR and at the eastern APA.
    • Any clear intel on how they decided to schedule interviews for one or the other conference?
    • re earlier discussion about cancellation: I think there was some confusion between this search and the one in the Religious Studies department, which really was cancelled.
    • Form letter acknowledging receipt of application materials rec'd.  Letter apologizes for the slowness of the process... (12/3) x 4. (12/4, London, w/request for Affirmative Action card).
    • Has anyone actually been contacted for an interview?  Otherwise highly doubtful that they managed to interview anyone at AAR, given the lateness of the acknowledgments.
    • Many stout souls of heroes, not yet hurled into Hell.
    • I was one of (my guess is) about 10 to 12 people interviewed at the AAR in Chicago.  I was told that they will conduct 5 more interviews at the APA (end of December), decide on a final list of 3 at the beginning of January, and hold campus interviews in February.
    • They told me (at the APA) that they will decide on 3 or 4 finalists in the first 2-3 weeks of January, campus interviews in February, and decisions in March.
    • Do we know yet if they have contacted candidates to schedule on-campus interviews?
    • 21/1: They've invited two people for on campus interviews (e-mail notification)

Yale Divinity School - Religious Education[]

In an ecumenical and increasingly inter-religious environment, Yale Divinity School prepares students for lay and ordained ministry in diverse Christian churches and for a wide range of religious leadership roles, professional involvements, and public service. A Ph.D. or its equivalent and strong pedagogical skills are required. A successful candidate will have expertise in the theories and practices of Christian education, as well as an understanding of the interreligious, intercultural, and global conversations in the field.
  • A letter of application with curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, and a brief writing sample should be submitted to Dean Gregory E. Sterling, Yale Divinity School, 409 Prospect Street, New Haven, CT 06511-2167. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2012.
  • Rejection letter received (3 Feb).

Yale University - Religious Studies - CANCELLED[]

  • 14 August 2012: Noticed this today on the AAR website :
  • YALE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES intends to make a tenure-track appointment in the field of Religious Studies beginning July 1, 2013, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Applications are invited and welcome from scholars with research specialties in the anthropology, sociology or social-scientific study of religions who also possess demonstrated teaching proficiency in methods and theory in the study of religion.
  • Also in Chronicle: apply at https://academicjobsonline.org. The review of applications will begin October 1, 2012 and continue until the position is filled. Preliminary interviews will be held at the AAR annual meeting in Chicago, Nov 17-20, 2012.
    • This seems to be the same position that was advertized last year, but according to last year's wiki, the result was "offer made and accepted." Anyone know the story here?
    • Last year's hire does philosophy/ethics, and now they are looking for a social scientist.
      • The very extended list of faculty appears restricted to the field of hermeneutics. Does anyone know how serious they are about a "social science" approach to religion, or how they would define this?
    • The dept was going to do a second search this year in modern religion, but the hire from last year covers this area well, so the decision was to forgo looking for someone else for that. So the search is repeated in its original form, i.e. for someone who does method (with the tools of a social scientist rather than a constructive thinker).
    • Does anyone know who the applications should be addressed to?
  • Any news from anyone (10/30)?
  • Search cancelled this year-- with a possibility of re-opening next year. (11/7)
  • Does anyone know why the search was cancelled? (11/7)
  • A senior scholar at another institution who is the partner of a current Yale faculty member was hired.

Youngstown State University - Asian Religions[]

  • Assistant Professor of Religious Studies - Asian Religions
  • Youngstown State University's Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Asian Religions, especially Buddhism, beginning August, 2013, pending funding and administrative approval. PhD required prior to appointment. We welcome candidates who can also contribute substantially to one or more of the following areas: Religion and Psychology, Religion and Ecology, Religion in the Americas (Central and South America), and Religion and Contemporary Thought. Candidates should be conversant in broad questions that animate the contemporary study of religion, including theoretical and comparative concerns. Excellence in teaching undergraduates is a priority, together with the promise of scholarly excellence. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the position to reflect his or her areas of expertise and interest.
  • All applicants must fill out the initial on-line application at jobs.ysu.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=50598.
  • Candidates should then send all application materials to the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, which must include: a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and no more than two representative writing samples or publications. Both hard copy and electronic application materials are acceptable; send electronic submissions to >bnwaller@ysu.edu, subject line faculty application, with all supporting material attached. Hard copy application materials should be mailed to Bruce Waller, Chair, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Youngstown State University, One University Plaza, Youngstown, OH 44555. (Letters of reference may be sent separately, if necessary.)
  • To receive full consideration, applications must be received by November 5, with later applications reviewed as needed until the position is filled. Selected candidates will be interviewed by phone or videoconference.
    • Contacted for Skype interview. (12/5)
    • Skype interviews Friday (12/6) and Monday (12/10)
      • What is the teaching load here? Nothing posted, but saw another ad indicating 4/4
      • Good question - I better ask that in the Skype interview! But seriously, I perused their current-semester course offerings, and from the courses listed and the names of the instructors, the load looked more like 2/3, at least for tenure-track faculty. I could be wrong about this though.
      • It is a 3-4
      • Contacted for Campus Interview. (12/11) (x3)
  • I just saw this job re-posted. Does anyone know what happened? (x2)
    • Where did you see it reposted?
    • Also saw reposting on HigherEd jobs (1/28). Is this a mistake? No deadline given on job ad. Perhaps those who had campus interview can share what committee said re: timeline?
    • I just contacted the search chair and was told that the position was already filled. Must have been a mistake.
    • This is strange-- I still have a campus interview with them. Can someone confirm that the position is filled?
    • Strange, indeed. I sent a second email to the chair and forwarded the website where the job was reposted (higheredjobs), and he replied saying that it was reposted by mistake. Maybe he told me in the first email the job was already filled as a way of saying, "thanks, but we already are conducting on-campus interviews and the job will be filled." Good luck with the interview, though!
  • Offer made and accepted, (2/20)
