The Department of Religious Studies at Allegheny College invites applicants for a tenure track position in Islamic Studies beginning August 2013. The Department seeks a teacher-scholar specializing in Islam, with teaching interests in historical, social and political aspects of Muslim societies, and the ability to teach comparative religions. Candidates will contribute to the newly developed Middle East and North African Studies Program. Teaching load is six semester courses per year (3/3). All faculty are expected to participate in delivering college-wide first-year/sophomore seminars that emphasize writing and speaking.

Arizona State University - Global Christianity[]

Assistant Professor in Global Christianity (JOB#10226) The School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies at Arizona State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in the history and/or the anthropology of global Christianity, to begin August 2013. The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses per semester which may include large survey courses well as theoretical and thematic courses in the study of religion at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
Required qualifications include: 1) Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field at the time of hire, 2) a research agenda that explores the global expansion of Christianity as well as the ways in which Christian movements have developed historically in different regions of the world; and 3) evidence of teaching effectiveness, publication, research agenda, and professional activity appropriate to rank.

Baylor University - George W. Truett Theological Seminary - Practical Theology[]

Assistant to Full Professor of Practical Theology
The position requires teaching seminary level courses in Practical Theology. The area of specialization is open (e.g., congregational studies, family ministry, homiletics, pastoral care, and youth ministry). Requirements for the position may also include teaching Doctor of Ministry seminars and supervising Doctor of Ministry students. The successful candidate will begin teaching responsibilities in August of 2013.
Candidates must hold the Ph.D. degree. They must possess ministry experience and be committed to the Baptist tradition with evidence of active involvement in the life of a congregation. They should also have a calling to educate students for ministry in practical theology and demonstrate academic credentials and a commitment to collegiality. Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level and a record of academic publications will be highly valued.

Boston College School of Theology and Ministry - Moral Theology/Social Ethics[]

The Ecclesiastical Faculty of the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry seeks applications for a fulltime, tenured or tenure-track position in moral theology, with a specialization in social ethics.
To be considered, applicants must hold an earned doctorate in Catholic moral theology or Christian social ethics. The possession of, or willingness to pursue, a license in sacred theology (STL), would be highly desirable. Candidates should be prepared to teach courses appropriate for the Master of Divinity as well as offerings for other theology and ministry students at the masters and doctoral level covering most or all of the following topics: Catholic social teaching and fundamental moral theology, theories of Christian social ethics, racism, and other possible specializations such as the history of Christian political thought, sociology of religion, ethical dimensions of economic life, theology of labor, environmental ethics, the ethics of gender and family life, social justice and scripture, and the ethics of peace and war.
Candidates must be committed to core Catholic teachings, especially in social justice, and approach their teaching and research in an interdisciplinary way, with sensitivity to pastoral needs and cultural diversity. Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong teaching and research ability, including ability to contribute to the formation of Jesuits and other candidates approved for ordination studies, women and men for lay ecclesial ministries, and for service rooted in faith. The Department of Religious Studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor with expertise in the academic study of Islam. The department seeks a dedicated teacher who can offer a variety of courses in Religious Studies, including a survey course in World Religions, a course on the history and methodology of Religious Studies, and new courses in Islamic Studies to be developed by the successful candidate. The Colorado College Religion Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level in Global Christianity/ies beginning in the fall of 2013. We seek a promising scholar of religion trained in anthropological or sociological methodologies, with broad knowledge of Christian traditions and specialization in one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. - They've apparently been reviewing as applications have come in... enough at least to interview a few people at the AAR three weeks ago.
- Formally, though, their deliberations only started on the 8th. They can't start calling people they interviewed at AAR for on-campus interviews if they're telling candidates they're accepting applications until the 8th.
Received phone call invitation for brief on-campus interview. N.B., this is not a full campus interivew, but just a 90-minute in-person interview with the committee in January. Full on-campus interviews will follow after they use these interviews to narrow the list. (12/18)

Furman University - History and Theology of Christianity Before the Modern Era[]

The Department of Religion at Furman University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship beginning Fall 2013. Tenure-track position in the Department of Religious Studies (Gender and Religion in Asia), starting Fall 2013. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible. While the area specialty for the position is Asia broadly defined, the successful candidate will be able to teach courses on gender, Buddhism and an introductory course on religions of East Asia. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. I'm didn't apply for this job, am not in this area, and know literally less than nothing about this search, but searches can fail for all kinds of reasons - departmental needs are complicated and also constantly changing. You just never know.
I was under the impression that this isn't that unheard of- that there are many different factors involved and sometimes they just have to go back to the drawing board.
It's reasonably common, yes.
I had an interview with them back in November, and I immediately got the impression that they were not exactly sure what they wanted. Although I don't do East Asia, they clearly wanted someone to take over the teaching duties of a professor about to retire who does teach East Asia. They kept asking me how I might teach a course on East Asian religions even though it's not my expertise. Nice guys, though.
I am not a candidate for this position and have no idea what's going on with this search, but see that their orig job description clearly states they want someone who can teach East Asian religions/Buddhism. I don't think it's that common to go fishing again. It happens of course, but barring an unanticipated change in the structure of the department (a retiring faculty member falls under the rubric of "anticipated"), it more often reflects the inter-personal dynamics of the committee and/or department, e.g. power-struggles, etc. Searches are expensive and failed ones for reasons other than an unanticipated change, especially in an era where there is an abundance of highly qualified candidates for any given job, can reflect poorly on the department, especially if a pattern emerges.

- Still nothing. But their Spring semester begins today (1/28). I figure there are three possibilities: 1.) they weren't able to arrange interviews before the end of the Fall term, so it will be on their agenda early in the Spring semester; 2.) they arranged interviews and people just haven't posted that here (that seems unlikely given the history of this WIki); 3.) they've had to cancel their search for some reason (funding didn't come through, etc.). If I had to bet, given their late deadline and the nature of academic committees, my money would probably be on the first option.

I haven't heard anything either - it might mean that they're taking a while, or the money didn't go through, but it might also mean that the interviewees just aren't even checking the wiki.
A very close friend of mine interviewed for a different position there last week. He asked the Dean about this position b/c he knew I had applied. Apparently the Dean has approved the list of applicants to interview, so it sounds as though the search is definitely going forward. I just don't know if anyone has been invited to interview yet.

- I got an email on 10/18 saying that I was "among the top candidates" but that they needed answers to some supplemental questions, which were to be emailed back by tomorrow (10/25). The email said that based on the various candidates answers to these questions, a long-list will be made for telephone interivews at the end of October, following which will be made a short-list for campus interviews in early December. The email further said that there would be no AAR interviews.
  - I say bogus. The job ad clearly stated AAR interviews and yet you magically received an email stating otherwise while the rest of the applicant pool hears nothing! I say to you, "among the top candidates," your post is bogus because no search committee would say such a thing, especially this early in the process!
  - "Rest of the applicant pool"? The posters and lurkers here are unlikely to be more than a small fraction of it. And I'm sorry to say, but absence of communication from the search committee is the norm, not the exception. Last year for those jobs that I didn't make the second round I often never heard back at all, and only through the good graces of the people on this site did I learn that things had progressed.
    - This is not my field and I didn't apply for these jobs, but I happen to know several people in the department, and I can confirm, completely independently of what the previous poster has said, that in fact this search is *not* doing AAR interviews (despite the plan stated in the ad -- the systematic theol. search *is* doing AAR interviews, but not Asian Religions), and a short list for phone interviews for Asian Religion search has been developed (as of late last week). The poster who reported the email did not deserve to be attacked for reporting his/her experience (which I know to be accurate from other sources), and I would just suggest this site will work a lot better if everyone is given the benefit of the doubt and addressed with a spirit of generosity.   - I did not apply to this job, so I have no skin in this game. However, I was one of the applicants for last year's EC seach. They invited us all—before interviews had been announced or decided—to the AAR reception, and I must say, it was quite awkward. All the applicants inevitably found each other, and talk quickly turned to things like, "So, I see that you applied for this job too. Ok...How's that going?" What made matters worse was that neither the SC chair nor any members of the SC (as far as I could tell) attended the reception. Talking with other SMU faculty as you do as drinky parties, I quickly learned (as other applicants did) that no really expected our presence, or really knew why we were there. Afterwards, I narrated the event to my confused advisor and other faculty members, who responded with things like, "So, wait. Why were you invited to this thing again?" At any rate, I did not land an interview, and aside from the three free beers (Anchor Porters, at that!) I had while there, the reception was a waste of time. I suppose SMU feels like the invitation is a friendly gesture, but it's one made at the cost of an uncomfortable and perplexing experience. My two cents.
  - Thanks for this perspective. It's outrageous to hear that the SC chair or member did not attend - an invitation like this inevitably raises expectations and that seems deeply careless. Perhaps this weekend will be different.
- Anyone else have a "wonderful" time at the reception?
- SMU's "informal" reception interviews are awkward, unprofessional, and unfair to the candidates. They have to put a stop to the practice. It puts the candidates in an impossible situation. They don't know what to do, how to act, or who to speak with. I'm sure SMU believes it's a comfortable, non-threatening environment for introductions, but it's not. Candidates should not have to compete with each other in person, even if, ostensibly, it's only informal. We all know it's never informal. People familar with the powers that be should gently tell them to stop. Also, the AAR should be notified of the practice.

- If you're stunned, you must be new to the job market. It's not equitable, it's not objective, and it's not predictible. Rather, it's capricious, driven by politics and institutional factors beyond your control. Nothing in the job market will surprise you once you realize that fact. Also, you're up against 170 applicants. Do you really think you stand out so clearly against, say 30 stellar applicants? It's time to temper expectations: the market's flooded with talent. Expect nothing.

- And I was surprised that I was called for an interview: selecting 10-15 to interview out of 170 seems a daunting task, however you cut it. My own specialization is historically very broad (though with an ancient focus) but constructive in method.
- I think a lot of people were stunned. I think part of it is that this job ad was designed so vaguely that everyone was able to read themselves into it. I think people actually trained to teach "American religious history" have the most cause to be stunned. That criterion in particular made this ad very weird. The successful candidate's research will be grounded in the academic study of the Modern Middle East/Islam (19th century-present). Secondary specialization is open broadly to such topics as Islamic history and global development. Knowledge/fluency in language(s) appropriate to the candidate's field of study is expected. The successful candidate will be conversant in theoretical approaches to Islam within the academic study of religion as well as history.

- This university is embroiled in a serious academic freedom dispute over their pres' cancelation of a visit by a distinguished woman theologian who says the question of gay civil marriage is a matter of conscience. Look at the student newspaper story on their website. The students and faculty are up in arms there. I also saw a story about it last week in the UK Guardian.

- Last year's hire does philosophy/ethics, and now they are looking for a social scientist.
  - The very extended list of faculty appears restricted to the field of hermeneutics. Does anyone know how serious they are about a "social science" approach to religion, or how they would define this?
- The dept was going to do a second search this year in modern religion, but the hire from last year covers this area well, so the decision was to forgo looking for someone else for that. So the search is repeated in its original form, i.e. for someone who does method (with the tools of a social scientist rather than a constructive thinker).

- Strange, indeed. I sent a second email to the chair and forwarded the website where the job was reposted (higheredjobs), and he replied saying that it was reposted by mistake. Maybe he told me in the first email the job was already filled as a way of saying, "thanks, but we already are conducting on-campus interviews and the job will be filled." Good luck with the interview, though!
