  • Received invitation for campus visit (12/11) (2)
  • Received invitation for campus visit (12/13) (1)
  • Campus visits completed, 4 candidates.
  • Other finalists: Anyone heard from them yet?  Received an offer?  Haven't heard a peep since my campus visit so I assume I didn't get the job but wondering if someone did?  (3/9/13)
  • Hi! One finalist here. No word from PSU since my visit either. Relieved to hear that the absolute silence wasn't just me. So very curious who the other finalists were, and what is going on with this search... (3/10/13)
  • Another finalist here. As of about 10 days ago the search was not concluded (though whether that means they've made an offer or they're still deciding is unclear). I guess the question is whether the fourth one of us knows any more... (3/11/13)
  • Question for 3/11: How did you find out the search was not concluded? Contact with the dept.?
  • Hi, 3/9 poster here.  I am going to query them now and will report if I hear anything useful.  My guess based on my experience on searches is that the search not being "concluded" means that they either made an offer to the other finalist and are in negotiations (but want to keep the rest of us in the mix in case their offer is turned down), or that there is an administrative hang up at the dean's level.  Will let you know if I find out more.  Kudos to all of us for being finalists.  (3/11/13)
  • 3/10 Poster here. Thanks, 3/9, and congrats to you and 3/11.
  • 3/9 poster here.  Heard back from chair of search committee in record time.  As I suspected, they "have an offer out but nothing has been finalized."  No info on ranking of the remaining candidates, i.e. "you're our second choice!" but she said she would "be in touch if things change in any way."
  • Curious if I'll get a rejection letter...it's been over 2 months since the campus visit. :-( (4/8/13)
  • Would be nice to have some closure, it's true.  I wonder if they are still in negotiations with their first choice?  Maybe time for another query?  (4/9/13)
  • Second offer made and accepted. (5/9/13)

    • I don't understand why they are hiring TWO professors in the same exact area, the same exact year. Did I miss something? This is the same exact description as the Open Rank position that they already interviewed for earlier this year. Any info? A:  This may be just rumor, but I heard that they have someone specific in mind for the assistant tt position.  I don't know about the other, tho.
    • I believe it was San Antonio that had the open rank position [NOTE: this seems to refer to open rank position in Latina/o Literary and Cultural Studies in the English Dept - see Other Ethnic American 2013]. Austin DID have a search in the "same exact area" earlier at the Associate level. I take their search at the Assitant level in the same area to mean that their Associate search failed. • Request for letters of rec (2/10)
  • Request for campus visit (2/14)
  • Heard this was offered and accepted

    • HELP! I can't seem to find the job in the university's employment site. Have emailed Historical Studies (12/10) x2
    • Received reply apologizing for the problems, noting that the issues with the online system have been corrected, and suggesting I email them any documents that cannot be uploaded using the online system (12/10)
    • Thanks!I was able to locate the job in the university's employment site without any issue. I received an acknowledgement right after I submitted the app. Good luck!
  • Does anyone know if Toronto-Mississauga is planning to interview at MLA?
    • I'm not sure, but my guess is no. It doesn't say so in the ad, and I don't think a lot of Canadian WGS programs interview there. Though this isn't always true, the Canadian market tends to run a bit later than the American one.
    • Doubtful, for the reasons above and because this is a pretty interdisciplinary search - "Social and Political Thought; Cultural and Literary Representations; Transnational and Diasporic Contexts; Canadian Histories and Perspectives," per the ad...not just MLA folk.
    • what do you think folks? will interviewees hear in January or any moment now?
    • long-listed candidates interviewed on January 7 via Skype.
      • There are 3 on campus interviews; last interviews are happening last week of Jan. There were 185 applications.
    • Rejection email -- "well over 100 highly qualified candidates" (2/27)
    • Looks like this was an internal hire.
      • If you don't mind sharing, how do you know?
      • this is someone else responding. I am a prof in Toronto and have followed the search carefully since several students have applied, but I am not on the search committee. Two of the three candidates had prior relationships with the University of Toronto. One of the three candidates has been teaching at UT-Mississauga as a sessional instructor; this is the person who was offered, and accepted, the position.  (4/9/13)

I'll move to the next thing in my job-search journey for this cycle (this time around, I am enjoying it!)

University of Wisconsin-Madison - Assistant Professor of Queer Theory, 1750-Present (English Dept.) -- OFFER ACCEPTED[]

The Department of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for an assistant professor position (tenure-track) in any field of literary studies from 1750 to the present and are focusing on queer theory and/or LGBTQ studies. Appointment will begin August 2013. Ph.D. required prior to start of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates who are thinking in innovative ways about literary and queer studies. • For full consideration, applications must be received no later than November 15, 2012. Interviews will be conducted at the MLA conference in Boston, MA.
  • 11/13: Application acknowledged (2)
  • 12/3: Received request for more materials (letters of reference) (x6)
  • Had you already sent reference letters with your original application?
  • This does seem strange since they'd requested letters up front.
  • It seems like they have already drawn up their first short or long list. I know, who wouldn't love to be working in the same department with Anne McClintock? Let's invest time in other great jobs now >_<
  • Actually, they didn't request rec letters upfront (see above).
  • My understanding-- which I think is a fairly widespread one-- is that when a search asks for your dossier, they're also asking for your letters of rec.
  • Hmmm. Every other posting on this page specifies letters quite clearly. And it does seem odd that they would just be filling the gaps in un-reviewed apps at this point, three weeks after the deadline. But as you can tell I'm trying to be hopeful! Good luck to all.
  • Oh all of you are right, I shouldn't be too negative about all of this then. Yes, when search committee asks for "dossier" that means letter of rec, or a document service that includes everything, especially letters of rec. Let's keep hanging in there ya all!
  • Anyone hear anything yet? Fares are increasing as I type.  Any info much appreciated.
  • contacted for MLA interview (12/17) x3
  • rejection email (12/18) x2
  • Campus Visit Request (01/10)
  • Anyone know who got this one?

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee- TT Assistant Professor of Women's Studies - DEADLINE PASSED[]

The Women’s Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a BA and minor, graduate certificate, MA , MA/MLIS , and MA/MSW.  The Program seeks an accomplished scholar for an assistant professor of Women’s Studies position to begin August 19, 2013.  Applicants must have  Ph.D. (by 5/31/13) in Women’s or Gender Studies;  Cultural, Ethnic, or Media Studies; Sociology, Political Science, History, Anthropology, Geography or a related field, sufficient to teach feminist theory and feminist research methods at both undergraduate and graduate levels.   Expertise in transnational feminism, narrative theory or Asian Studies desirable.  Women’s Studies graduate certificate or advanced degree is a plus.  Two courses per semester; service to program; research/scholarly agenda.  Applicants should upload letter of application, curriculum vitae, and writing sample of 25 pages or fewer (upload to “Other 1”) to: http://jobs.uwm.edu/postings/12514.  Three letters of recommendation should be sent by email to: Professor Gwynne Kennedy, Director, Women’s Studies Program, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (gkennedy@uwm.edu), PO Box 413, Milwaukee, WI 53201.

  • The deadline for application is March 8, 2013. UWM is an AA/EEO employer.
  • Rejection email (3/11) x4
    • This must be the quickest rejection in the history of academic job searches.  Sheesh!
    • I started laughing when I got the rejection...I submitted my application last Thursday. (3/11/13) - In response to your comment. I also submitted my application last Thursday but I didn't get a rejection email. My profile meets all of their desired qualitifications but one. I think it's mysterious that rejections were sent out so quickly but what's more intriguing to me is the fact that those of us who didn't receive a rejection email didn't get any other kind of message from the Search Committee either. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.  (03/12/13)
  • It seems like an internal hiring because the job ad is exactly written according to the profile of their current visiting professor.
  • Those who got rejections- was it from HR or from the department?
    • Yes it was from HR since it was sent from uwm-jobs@uwm.edu. And I have to agree with everyone above - fastest rejection ever.
    • This is the person who asked originally- I wonder if all of you didn't match some specific criteria. I've seen really fast rejections before, and they were all from HR on the grounds of not matching the departments "necessary" criteria (e.g. PhD in wrong discipline, not enough years teaching, etc.). It's curious here because I can't figure out, based on the job ad, what that criteria would be.
    • This must be an internal hiring. I satisfy all of their requirements, Ph.D in women' studies, teaching experience, research experience and even all the required research areas. It is obvious that they did not even look at my materials and then just let the HR send out the generic rejection letters to everyone except for the person on their mind. Maybe a couple of other people invited as the camuflage.
    • This is so mysterious!
    • Weird. I didn't get the email today, and although I do have a PhD in women's studies, my fields are not in the desirable areas. But yes, quite certainly, this job description is written for an internal candidate.
    • (3/13) To above poster: A cynic might hypothesize that they will shortlist candidates that aren't as close to their position description as some applicants who were rejected, in order to facilitate the internal candidate emerging as the "best fit."
    • (3/19) My work fits the description perfectly and I haven't received a rejection yet. I know someone in UWM who is not in the committee but has some knwoledge about the search and s/he feels that while the visiting person will be considered, might even be given some priority, it is not an internal hire. Who knows though.
  • Any news? (04/01)
  • email rejection (04/01) X 2

  • Has anyone heard anything since the phone interview? I assume that they moved to campus visits, but haven't heard a word either way (4/01)  <--If I may vent:  this is so obnoxious!  On another job, I phone interviewed last November, and still have heard nothing officially...thank god for this wiki (position filled).   I wonder if it's the economy, or if some places have always been this rude....
  • I agree, the rudeness of the employers is pretty disturbing. How can departaments teach students to be responsible and courteous when they treat potential candidates this way?

  • 9/28: application acknowledged
  • 10/5: application acknowledged (x4)
  • any word since the deadline?
  • 10/16: application acknowledged
  • Did anyone not get an acknowledgement? I just ask because I'm hoping Interfolio is e-mailing my application material correctly... [I would contact Donna Kepley (women@artsci.wustl.edu) to see if your materials were received. I got a confirmation both when my application was received (by mail) and also when my recommendations were received in the mail from Interfolio]
  • I didn't get an acknowledgement either and sent my material via USPS. (10/24)
    • (10/27) I also sent my application by USPS and have not received an acknowledgment.
  • I had not gotten an aknowledgement. I emailed the program administrator Donna Kepley and she said they had received very many applications. She was in the process of confirming the last wave of applications that came in, but it was a slow process at this point due to the large pool of applicants. 10/24
  • Does anyone know if WashU is interviewing at NWSA? any news?
  • Haven't heard anything about interviews, but I saw on last year's wiki that they hired a postdoc in masculinity and queer studies...I'm wondering if they plan to hire that person permanently.
    • To my knowledge, that person is now at another school in the Northeast. (google searches, etc.)
    • From what I can gather (from wiki from last year and google searches) there was a postdoc there from 2009-2012 and then another hired last year for a two-year position. The 2012 wiki says an offer was made in March of 2012. The person who moved on to a school in the northeast started at Wash U in 2009.
    • I can confirm that the postdoc they hired last March is still there now. The job description is slightly different from the postdoc posting (call for sexuality studies generally rather than emphasis on queer theory/masculinity studies exclusively), and they really advertised it a lot, which seems like it would just generate a lot of work if they planned to hire that person from the start- also, they started advertising this position well before the postdoc position even started, so my bet is we all have a shot. (I hope this is coherent, I am sleep-deprived.)
  • 11/1: email stating "The search committee will meet in mid-October to review all submissions." Did they mean mid-November?
    • Is the email the acknowledgement of your app or is this a second email? Maybe you could write back and ask if they meant November.
    • OP: Committee is still currently reviewing applications.
    • Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what does "OP" stand for?
      • OP = "Original Poster" (thank you!)
  • 11/7: Has anyone got the invitation for the interview at NWSA?
    • Nope (11/7)
    • Does anyone know that they are doing interviews there or are we just expecting them to? (11/8)
    • I am at the NWSA meeting and there's only 2 committees conducting job interviews here. (11/09)
    • Actually there were 3 comittees conducting interviews from what I saw (ASU, Dartmouth, and GVSU) but not Washington. I heard some interesting things about the university and program though (not entirely positive either). (11/13)
  • 11/15: request for Skype interview x4
  • 12/10 campus interviews scheduled.
  • job offer made & accepted
  • Congrats! The rejection email said there were 338 applications, so whoever came out on top must be very impressive!
    • I don't think that an offer says anything about the quality of the rest of 337 professionals who applied for this job. I hold a very prestigious postdoc at the top public university in the country. I specialize in racialized masculinities. I attended the NWSA meeting where the chair of this search commitee presented a paper. It was flat and uninspiring. My criticism is 100% biased as I was not granted an opportunity to interview for this job. However, given my credentials, not being invited to a preliminary interview tells me a lot about the standards of the search. Congrats to whoever received the offer but the rest of the applicants pool should not think much about why it didn't come to them (us).
    • Look, people, the person who got this deserves to be proud! Yes, rejection sucks, yes, the academic job market is brutal and oppressive. But surely our egos can survive without shitting on the lucky and obviously well-qualified person who got it.
    • Yes, I agree with you, this process is like a gamble, but being bitter and egoistic won't help. I congratulate the person that received the offer.
    • I'm a huge fan of the successful applicant's work: http://wgss.artsci.wustl.edu/articles/179. Congratulations to her!

We will consider candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds (natural sciences, social sciences, humanities) with expertise in LGBT and/or Queer Studies. • Review of applications will begin on December 30, 2012 and continue until the position is filled. Please send a letter of application and curriculum vitae and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to: c/o James-Henry Holland, Co-Chair, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered Studies Program, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, 300 Pulteney Street (Stern Hall), Geneva, NY 14456.
  • Email acknowledging receipt of application and a request to fill out a candidate identification form (01/09) x5
  • Any update on this?
    • I haven't heard anything since getting the EEO form. (2/4) x3
  • Request for Skype interview (2/11) x5
  • Interviewd yesterday via Skype, and was informed that they will be doing campus visits sometime before mid-March. A friend who works at the school says that there are 12 candidates in the initial pool. (2/17) x2
    • I can second the timeline based on what they told me as well.  I assume you mean that there were 12 candidates interviewed via Skype (not that only 12 people applied)?  Speaking of the Skype interview though... did anyone else feel like 20 minutes was WAY too short? --> yes! --> yes yes. we didn't even get to talking about the timeline!... which is why I'm so glad others posted it here. thanks.
    • Yeah! The interview was extremely short (only 15 mins), and they seemed rushed. And yes, there are 12 people being Skype interviewed. The timeline they gave me was VERY short: they appared to be under a lot of pressure. My friend at the school says that there is no inside candidate for this job, which makes the rushed feeling a little strange. Why interview so many if you have such a short time window? Guess we'll see!
      • The rushing of the actual interview did seem odd.  Due to the shortness of the interview, my guess that is that it might come down to specialty areas since I'm sure we're all pretty equally talented candidates and had similar issues rushing through our answers and whatnot.  In terms of rushing the search itself, it might be because people are getting offers elsewhere and they'll lose the top candidates if they put it off much longer.
    • Does anyone know when they'll be contacting those who are invited on campus?
    • I would assume very soon? It's kind of down to a knife's edge for me right now (x3). Anyone know?
    • Request for campus interview (via email 2/20) (x3) - congrats!!
    • Offer has been made and accepted (3/21)

QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION[]

See Gender/Sexuality_Academic_Opportunities for a relevant blog.

New Question 12/20--how much does it hurt if I don't have a PhD in WGS or Women's Studies, but have a gender focus in a related field (History)?  I'm wondering if these WGS programs expect now a PhD in WGS, whereas ten years ago, you could more frequently have a PhD in related fields.  I don't have a PhD in WGS, but have taught for a WGS program, and my research and teaching is WGS related.

- Social science w/ focus on gender here.  It depends on the job (and the elusive fact that we have no idea what a lot of committees are actually looking for, despite their advertisement!), but I received advice that in my area of specialty, it does not necessarily require a PhD in Women's Studies. Interestingly, have interviews in WGS, but not in my home discipline.
-- As a faculty in WGS, I can say that we give priority to those with a PhD in the field. But we will consider those who have interdisciplinary degrees in other fields (ethnic studies or American Studies for example) and those who have a graduate minor or certificate in WGS. Good luck to everybody!

I'm a graduate student just looking at jobs. Please don't berate my naivety, but would some of you consider explaining how one might distinguish between the sociology of gender (or a social science perspective) and gender studies proper. My understanding is that gender studies proper is explicitly interdiscipinary, but I'm interested in gauging others' thoughts.

Dudes! This process sucks. Amongst the many rejections we are all getting, let me take the risk of blindly asserting: all your feminist, queer, anti-racist scholarship and teaching is awesome, worthwhile and interesting. Jobs help to pay bills but are not statements on our work's value. Quite simply, here's to rejecting both rejection and the competition inherent in this whole process.

-Thanks! I like this. Also, I wish we could all be friends and colleagues instead of being pitted against each other through this process as competitors.
- I agree, and overall would like to think that we will all get jobs, sooner or later, and that we are already all colleagues and in some cases friends (this is a small world after all), and that once we are through this it will be easier to be colleagues at large. Mostly because we will stop spending time and energy on the market and focus on writing, and our work will become more accessible. Extra hugs to everyone who is going through this for the first time.

- I like this spirit of solidarity and understanding. This process is hard, and sometimes de-humanizing, but I believe we will each find our niche. Thanks for posting words of support and encouragement.

Hello all- There was a job posted at VCU on the Chronicle, and the deadline was Feb 5, but now the posting at the Chronicle is gone. Does anyone know what happened to this search? This was the description I managed to copy down before it disappeared:

The Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a tenure-eligible position at the assistant level. We seek a candidate with a strong potential for research and demonstrated teaching in the areas of gender and sexuality studies. The successful candidate will have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. Applications are encouraged from scholars whose work engages creatively with expertise in philosophical or social scientific approaches to gender and the health sciences and STEM.
  • Thanks for the link. This job is now posted in the list above. Deadline: Feb. 5.
http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/facjobs/facjob.asp?Item=4819

Question: What happened to the numbered list in the "contents" section? It was very helpful!

A: [Reposting from several other pages]: The issue seems to be that users who are not logged into the site cannot see the Contents formatted with Heading 3. I have contacted Wikia about this issue (which seems to have been introduced with yesterday's site update) and have been informed that this is an unintentional glitch that they are working on fixing. Hopefully, it will be fixed soon, but it is a larger interface issue that I do not control (beyond informing tech support about it). In the meantime, if you want to see the former "Contents" format, create a user log-in at this link http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Special:UserSignup  and you should be able to see it. Alternatively, if someone wants to go through and reformat all of the listed schools in Header 2, that will also take care of the problem more quickly (I am already beginning to work through some pages, but there are a lot, so I could use some help!) Thanks for your patience.Una74 (talk) 22:59, November 29, 2012 (UTC)

  • UPDATE: pending Wikia's fix, I reformatted the Headers so they should now show up in TOC at top of page even if you aren't logged in. But do let me know if you continue to have problems viewing the page. Una74 (talk) 20:23, November 30, 2012 (UTC)
  • 12/5: TOC bug fixed, headers reformatted.
