The Amherst College Department of Women’s and Gender Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor in the field of Gender, Science, and Technology Studies. The department, founded in 1987, is committed to inclusion, diversity and a high standard of interdisciplinary scholarship and instruction. We benefit from our location in the Connecticut River Valley, which boasts one of the largest concentrations of women’s studies scholars in the world, and we also maintain linkages with the Five College Women’s Studies Research Center and the Amherst College Center for Community Engagement.
We seek candidates whose scholarship makes a creative and interdisciplinary intervention in science policy, medicine, and/or technology as they intersect in a global context with gender, race, and sexuality. Topics that candidates could address include (but are not limited to): the role of race and gender in environmental policy; the gendered dimensions of scientific and medical developments and controversies (i.e. surrogate motherhood, sex selective abortion, medical tourism, HIV/AIDS, and maternal/infant health); contestations over genetic engineering, and the impact of the internet and digitization on practices and discourses of gender and sexuality. Candidates from the sciences, social sciences, humanities and interdisciplinary programs will be considered.

Arizona State University (ASU) seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Women and Gender Studies. Applicants are required to have a PhD in Women and Gender Studies or related field by time of appointment (August 2013), a record of interdisciplinary research and teaching; and a focus on structural inequities (legal, social, political, economic, etc.) in any area of sexuality studies. We are particularly interested in candidates who look at LGBTQ issues of economic justice or human rights, sexual citizenship, indigenous sexualities and/or masculinity studies from a transnational and/or intersectional perspective. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core undergraduate and graduate courses as well as upper division courses related to their specialty area.
Women and Gender Studies (WGS) at ASU is one of the largest, most vibrant undergraduate and PhD programs in the U.S. Located within the nations first School of Social Transformation (SST), a new transdisciplinary school unique to ASU that brings together interdisciplinary fields to integrate the study of gender, race, class, sexuality and nation. Qualifications:The Gender and Women's Studies Department at California State University, Northridge seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor, whose work focuses on Feminist Legal/Public Policy and/or Human Rights issues from a feminist decolonial perspective. Preferences are for research specialties in the Muslim world, or indigenous populations in the Americas. The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Gettysburg College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2013. This is one of five eventual positions in a multi-unit cluster initiative on “the Racialized Body” focusing on the ways that contemporary and historical notions of race, racial ideology, and racial politics manifest in how the body is represented, inhabited and regulated. The position in Post-Colonial Sexualities studies will focus on the racialized body as a nexus where intimate forms of power that emerge out of gender and sexual relations intersect with imperial power and colonial legacies. Scholars who adopt an intersectional perspective will be strongly considered.

I've seen really fast rejections before, and they were all from HR on the grounds of not matching the departments "necessary" criteria (e.g. PhD in wrong discipline, not enough years teaching, etc.). It's curious here because I can't figure out, based on the job ad, what that criteria would be.

- From what I can gather (from wiki from last year and google searches) there was a postdoc there from 2009-2012 and then another hired last year for a two-year position. The 2012 wiki says an offer was made in March of 2012. The person who moved on to a school in the northeast started at Wash U in 2009.
- I can confirm that the postdoc they hired last March is still there now. The job description is slightly different from the postdoc posting (call for sexuality studies generally rather than emphasis on queer theory/masculinity studies exclusively), and they really advertised it a lot, which seems like it would just generate a lot of work if they planned to hire that person from the start- also, they started advertising this position well before the postdoc position even started, so my bet is we all have a shot. (I hope this is coherent, I am sleep-deprived.)

- I don't think that an offer says anything about the quality of the rest of 337 professionals who applied for this job. I hold a very prestigious postdoc at the top public university in the country. I specialize in racialized masculinities. I attended the NWSA meeting where the chair of this search commitee presented a paper. It was flat and uninspiring. My criticism is 100% biased as I was not granted an opportunity to interview for this job. However, given my credentials, not being invited to a preliminary interview tells me a lot about the standards of the search. Congrats to whoever received the offer but the rest of the applicants pool should not think much about why it didn't come to them (us).

- Yeah! The interview was extremely short (only 15 mins), and they seemed rushed. And yes, there are 12 people being Skype interviewed. The timeline they gave me was VERY short: they appared to be under a lot of pressure. My friend at the school says that there is no inside candidate for this job, which makes the rushed feeling a little strange. Why interview so many if you have such a short time window? Guess we'll see!

Due to the shortness of the interview, my guess that is that it might come down to specialty areas since I'm sure we're all pretty equally talented candidates and had similar issues rushing through our answers and whatnot. New Question 12/20--how much does it hurt if I don't have a PhD in WGS or Women's Studies, but have a gender focus in a related field (History)? I'm wondering if these WGS programs expect now a PhD in WGS, whereas ten years ago, you could more frequently have a PhD in related fields. I don't have a PhD in WGS, but have taught for a WGS program, and my research and teaching is WGS related.
- - Social science w/ focus on gender here. It depends on the job (and the elusive fact that we have no idea what a lot of committees are actually looking for, despite their advertisement!), but I received advice that in my area of specialty, it does not necessarily require a PhD in Women's Studies. Interestingly, have interviews in WGS, but not in my home discipline.
- -- As a faculty in WGS, I can say that we give priority to those with a PhD in the field. But we will consider those who have interdisciplinary degrees in other fields (ethnic studies or American Studies for example) and those who have a graduate minor or certificate in WGS. Good luck to everybody!
I'm a graduate student just looking at jobs. Please don't berate my naivety, but would some of you consider explaining how one might distinguish between the sociology of gender (or a social science perspective) and gender studies proper. My understanding is that gender studies proper is explicitly interdiscipinary, but I'm interested in gauging others' thoughts.
Dudes! This process sucks. Amongst the many rejections we are all getting, let me take the risk of blindly asserting: all your feminist, queer, anti-racist scholarship and teaching is awesome, worthwhile and interesting. Jobs help to pay bills but are not statements on our work's value. Quite simply, here's to rejecting both rejection and the competition inherent in this whole process.

- - I agree, and overall would like to think that we will all get jobs, sooner or later, and that we are already all colleagues and in some cases friends (this is a small world after all), and that once we are through this it will be easier to be colleagues at large. Mostly because we will stop spending time and energy on the market and focus on writing, and our work will become more accessible. Extra hugs to everyone who is going through this for the first time.
