Discussion / Rumors / Speculation[]

A special request: This article highlights some interesting trends in the music theory job market, and it’s only possible because of the way academic musicians use this wiki: when they accept a job offer, they post their name, where and when they earned their PhD, and what job they’re moving from. I’d like to do something similar for anthropology, but it depends on you. If you’d like to help us understand who gets which jobs and how quickly, please consider posting your name and info when you accept an offer. Thanks! DanielG_AAA (talk) 17:45, March 21, 2016 (UTC)

  • - This sounds useful to me. Its information that can eventually be gleaned by the obsessive scanning of dept websites in the fall, so its not like its secret information. I can't think of a reason that the happy job-getters would be reluctant to share.

A Running List of Schools Requesting Reference Letters Upfront (Contrary to AAA Career Center Request)[]

The AAA has requested that search committees refrain from asking for letters of recommendation until initial screening of applicants has been completed:

"Solicitation of letters of recommendation should occur only after an initial screening of candidates to minimize inconvenience to applicants and referees. Names of references may be requested, however."

http://www.aaanet.org/profdev/index.cfm

Despite this (at least four year-old request), many institutions persist in requiring letters of recommendation as part of an initial application package.  This places a burden on both the applicant and his/her reviewers and places undue stress on advisor/advisee relationships.  Please list here the names of schools/job posts asking for up-front letters of recommendation so that we may alert the AAA to violations of their request:

  •  California Polytechnic University Pomona
  •  University of California, Santa Barbara
  •  University of Central Arkansas - generates automatic request for letters to letter writers. Be aware.
  • SUNY-Oneonta auto-requests letters from references
