Australia National University - Lecturer in Biological Anthropology (Human Evolution) - May 1[]

The School of Archaeology and Anthropology in the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint a biological anthropologist broadly specialising in human evolution to contribute to its research and teaching program, commencing in 2016. We seek to appoint a lecturer with an active commitment to research, who is able to translate that research interest into lively and engaging courses taught at the undergraduate level and above, and to supervise postgraduate research students. That person will be able to demonstrate energy and expertise in teaching, research and publication, at an early-career level. The successful candidate will be able to deliver existing courses in human evolution and will also be expected to develop their own courses and teaching program in evolutionary biology that complements existing course offerings within the discipline of biological anthropology in the School. Being able to teach primate evolutionary biology would be an advantage. The principal research skill sets sought are those of a biological anthropologist specialising in aspects of evolutionary history of humans or other primates. The appointee will also be required to contribute to the Honours program, potentially supervise graduate students, and undertake a modest, proportionate role in School administration.

  • APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications to begin on January 5, 2015. Position opened until filled (or recruitment canceled)
  • Can anyone clarify the letters of reference issue?  The advertisement on AAPA and AAA websites says 3-5 letters of reference must be submitted (up-front apparently?) but also says finalists will be required to submit "three to five current letters of recommendation (if not already submitted)".  So, does this mean that we don't send letters at time of submission?
  • Has anyone heard anything since submitting their application?
  • I didn't understand whether the letters should be sent or not either and I just received notice (2/16) that they have not received my letters of reference yet so please submit them now. 
  • Same here. I replied and stated that the AAA has asked that letters not be requested from referees until after initial review of applications is complete. I also indicated that there had been some confusion about whether letters were requested a priori or after finalists had been determined. I said I'd be happy to provide letters if I'd passed initial screening and was now on a long list, but that I'd told my referees I wouldn't be asking for letters before initial screening was complete out of respect for their time.

Central Washington University (WA) - Biological Anthropologist - Mar. 11 - CAMPUS VISITS COMPLETED[]

Job Summary: The Department of Anthropology and Museum Studies, in the College of the Sciences at Central Washington University, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track biological anthropologist at the assistant professor level. The successful candidate will have expertise in paleoanthropology and/or human osteology. The new faculty member will participate in an interdisciplinary Forensics Certificate program currently under development. He or she will also be responsible for continuing several aspects of our existing curriculum such as: undergraduate classes on fossil humans, comparative skeletal analysis and primate evolution, General Education classes in biological anthropology, graduate courses and thesis advancement in the Resource Management and/or Primate Behavior master's programs. The successful applicant must have an active research program and should describe how that program would involve undergraduate and graduate students. The successful applicant will be committed to working in a "four-field" department.

Florida State University- Open Rank Archaeology/Bioarchaeology - Feb. 16 - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED[]

The Department of Anthropology at the Florida State University invites applications for an appointment in archaeology/bioarchaeology. Ph.D. required. We seek a candidate with a strong teaching and field research record and RPA certification. Candidates with expertise in osteological analysis, remote sensing, collections management, or forensic anthropology are especially welcome. This is a tenurable position which will begin in August 2015.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in biological anthropology beginning August 2015. We seek a biological anthropologist with a specialty in bioarchaeology and/or forensic anthropology.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in introductory biological anthropology, osteology, bioarchaeology/ paleopathology, forensic anthropology, and specialized courses in her/his area of expertise. The position requires teaching 12 credit hours per semester (4 courses) at the annual academic year load of 24 semester credit hours or the equivalent, day, evening, and weekend, as needed unless they receive reassigned time to engage in other activities. Teaching involves activities that impart knowledge and critical thinking skills to students. It includes preparing for and conducting courses assigned, assessing student progress, curriculum development and revision, and staying current in the discipline. It also involves the use of new technology as appropriate. Monmouth University’s Department of History and Anthropology seeks applicants for an assistant professor in Biological Anthropology with a knowledge of general anthropology. This anticipated opening is for the 2015-2016 academic year and is a tenure-track appointment.Specialization in Human Evolution, Forensics and/or Bioarchaeology a plus.

We have strong BA and MA programs that strive to enhance methodological and theoretical bases with the practical skills that give graduates the edge to practice their anthropology in many settings.We have both local and international field schools, and we anticipate that the successful candidate can provide additional opportunities for biological anthropological participation.   • During the phone interview I had on 2/6 they said they were hoping to notify candidates about campus interviews within two weeks and conduct the interviews during the first two weeks of March, the second of which is their spring break.  I have not heard anything further.  I assume we basically have to hear by the end of this week in order to keep to their stated campus interview schedule.

Northwestern University (IL) - Biological Anthropology - Nov. 14 - INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED[]

Northwestern University, Department of Anthropology invites applications for a Full time tenure-track assistant professorship in biological anthropology beginning September, 2015. We seek an anthropologist with interests that complement current faculty strengths in biocultural and evolutionary perspectives on human biology, development, and health. Potential areas of specialization include, but are not limited to, molecular or population genetics, epigenetics, demography, life history theory, neurobiology, microbiome, and human adaptability. Applicants should have active research and publications related to human biology, and should demonstrate the potential to obtain external funding. The successful candidate will be involved in the ongoing development of the Laboratory for Human Biology Research, and undergraduate and graduate curricula in human biology within the context of a four-field anthropology program that encourages dialogue across the subfields.

The State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh seeks to hire an Assistant Professor in Anthropology for a tenure-track position to begin at the end of August 2015. We are looking for a biophysical anthropologist with an active research program and record of involving undergraduate students in research. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. He or she will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach courses each semester; engage in service to the department, college, and profession; maintain an active program of research and publication; and engage students in research. She or he will be expected to develop courses reflecting her/his own expertise, and may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.

Required Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Anthropology is required for appointment as Assistant Professor. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, upon proof that the applicant’s defense of his/her dissertation will be scheduled within the first year of the appointment. A successful ABD applicant will receive promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor and a salary increment at the start of the semester following verification of the terminal degree completion. Experience teaching Human Evolution or equivalent and a demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness and innovative pedagogy are required. Texas State University (TX) - Forensic Anthropology - Open Rank - December 1[]

The Department of Anthropology at Texas State University invites applications for an appointment in Forensic Anthropology, rank open, to begin Fall 2015. The successful candidate will be the fourth forensic anthropologist in the department. Texas State currently has a large outdoor human decomposition research laboratory (Forensic Anthropology Research Facility), a growing willed body donation program, and two dedicated forensic labs that comprise the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State (FACTS). The Grady Early Forensic Research Laboratory houses the permanent donated skeletal collection and advanced imaging systems. The Osteological Research and Processing Laboratory contains state of the art processing facilities and a secure laboratory for medico-legal casework. FACTS attracts international and interdisciplinary researchers, and provides training and research opportunities for students.

At the time of application applicants are required to have 1) a PhD in Anthropology with a focus in Forensic Anthropology, 2) an active research program with a record of publications in forensic anthropology, and 3) experience teaching and mentoring students at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Preference will be given to applicants who have experience teaching and mentoring PhD students, and who have a record of external funding. Areas of specialization are open but preference will be given to applicants with experience in morgue-based trauma analysis, stable isotopic analysis, chemical decomposition analysis, forensic DNA, and/or quantitative methods. We especially encourage applications at the associate and full professor level, or from those at the advanced assistant professor level. Diplomates of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology are encouraged to apply. Rank and salary will be negotiated and commensurate with qualifications.

Applicants will be expected to conduct research in forensic anthropology and teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in forensic anthropology and biological anthropology. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of a proposed PhD program in Applied Anthropology.

The Department of Anthropology & Archaeology at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II in Primate Genomics and Dietary Ecology, effective July 1, 2015. The Chair will be appointment to a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with tenure position and the successful candidate will be nominated for a Canada Research Chair. The successful candidate will combine genomics research with primate behavioural ecology to provide insights into the pressures that have shaped dietary adaptations in primates. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, the Chair will study the interplay of diet, the senses and the environment. Research foci may include, but are not limited to, genomic analysis of microbiomes, evolution and ecology of primate sensory systems, and reconstructing diet in extinct species.

There is an expectation that the Chair establish an extensive independent research program aligned with the University of Calgary’s Strategic Research Plan and to provide high quality teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The School of Medicine and Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University are seeking full-time Postdoctoral Associates who will contribute to the teaching of medical students in Medical Human Gross Anatomy and students and residents in other anatomically-based medical school courses at an advanced and clinical level. Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute/UC Davis - Post-doc in Movement and Foraging Ecology of Neotropical Frugivores - Jan. 20th - POSITION FILLED[]

A postdoctoral position is available on an NSF-funded project investigating the relationship between cognition and foraging efficiency in a Neotropical frugivore guild. The position is funded by and will be based at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama, but the successful applicant will be expected to spend time each year at the University of California, Davis in the laboratory of Dr. Meg Crofoot.

The research will involve (1) GPS-tracking the movements of six large-bodied, frugivorous mammal species on Barro Colorado Island, Panama during an ecologically simple period when only one major fruit source is available, mapping the spatial distribution of this keystone fruit tree species via remote sensing, and collecting data on individual travel routes, patch visit durations, and fruit intake rates to estimate the relative foraging efficiency of each species, and (2) analyzing observed animal movement patterns to evaluate what frugivores know about the distribution of resources in their habitat and how they integrate that information. The applicant will work as part of a collaborative team with Dr. Crofoot and project collaborators Roland Kays (North Carolina Museum of Natural Science), Ben Hirsch (STRI) and Damien Caillaud (Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund). S/he will be expected to supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and to participate in all aspects of the research project from field work and data collection to managing and analyzing data to writing manuscripts and grant proposals, and will be asked to contribute to the development of research approaches and directions.

Eligibility: a Ph.D. in ecology, animal behavior or a related field with expertise in movement ecology or animal foraging behavior. Experience with field-based animal research and movement modelling is necessary. Proficiency in (or the burning desire to learn) R and/or C/C++, the ability to communicate in Spanish, and experience with animal capture, GPS-tracking and GIS software are highly desirable.

The position will begin May 2015 and, subject to performance and funding, will last up to two years, with an initial appointment of 13/2 months and a possible renewal for another 12 months.  Salary will be commensurate with experience, and additional funding to defray the costs of professional travel is available. STRI in Panama is home to a lively and diverse academic community, and hosts 100s of visiting scientists from around the world each year (http://www.stri.si.edu/). The position is funded by the University of Calgary, the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, and grant funds from the main supervisor, Dr. Linda Fedigan.  The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology is the home of four full-time faculty primatologists and their research teams with long-term field projects in Belize, Costa Rica, Ghana and Madagascar. Our collaborative objective is to create synergies and new insights from comparative analyses of our datasets. To that end, we have developed an integrated database as part of the PACE project (Primates Adapting to Changing Environments). PACE currently includes long-term data on three primate species (with three more species datasets shortly to be integrated) and is comprised of behavioural, ecological, demographic, genetic, nutritional and spatial data.  It is both an online database and a physical space with computers, software and data storage devices, including a collection of satellite imagery for our field sites.  We seek a scholar with expertise in one or more of these areas: behavioural, social, spatial and/or reproductive ecology; life history and demography; primate (including human) adaptability in changing environments. The postdoctoral fellow should have a strong interest in collaborative research and cross-specific, comparative studies. They will be given access to the PACE database and encouraged to develop collaborative publications based on the PACE data (and their own data if available), to mentor graduate students and to organize workshops relevant to areas of overlapping interest areas.  

The salary is $50,000CDN per year, plus funds to cover extended health care and some relocation/travel/conference expenses that will be detailed in the offer letter. The Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Missouri School of Medicine is seeking a non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of anatomy beginning June 2015.  The primary responsibility of this position is teaching technology-enhanced anatomy education to pre-health professional undergraduate students and developing and implementing online anatomy instruction in collaboration with the anatomy teaching team.

  • It's par for the course, really. I interviewed at two other schools, and was shortlisted at three more, and haven't heard back from any as of today. It's not classy, but it's the norm.

  • - Question (Dec. 11): Does anyone know what the teaching load is like? I've heard that USC first year medical gross runs all year (Summer-Fall-Spring). Is that correct?
  • - Answer (Dec. 11): medical anatomy runs from the middle of August to the end of May, and is integrated with the rest of the first and second year medical school curriculum. On average, there is one lecture and one lab per week (~4 hours total).  At some times during the year there may be two labs per week, and at other times there are consecutive weeks with no teaching obligations. There is a lot of time for research related activities including traveling to museums and conducting fieldwork (depending on when and where you need to go) throughout the year.

Wright State University (OH) - Instructor of Biological Anthropology - Jan 2 - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

The Wright State University Department of Sociology and Anthropology is accepting applications for an Instructor of Biological Anthropology to start August 2015 (with the likelihood of paid course-specific training to begin in July, 2015). The ideal candidate will be a biological anthropologist with demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will teach an established and popular introductory biological anthropology course and several sections of weekly labs. Wright State follows a semester system and this position will include teaching 2 lecture sections and 9 lab sections per academic year. Some opportunities for summer teaching may also be available.

Anatomy positions[]

Next year, should we consider having a separate section for gross anatomy positions?  Would this make it easier for everyone to navigate?

A Running List of Schools Violating AAA Career Center Request[]

The AAA has requested that search committees refrain from asking for letters of recommendation until initial screening of applicants has been completed:

"Solicitation of letters of recommendation should occur only after an initial screening of candidates to minimize inconvenience to applicants and referees. Names of references may be requested, however."

Despite this (at least three year-old request), many institutions persist in requiring letters of recommendation as part of an initial application package.  This places a burden on both the applicant and his/her reviewers and places undue stress on advisor/advisee relationships.  Please list here the names of schools/job posts asking for up-front letters of recommendation so that we may alert the AAA to violations of their request:

For what it's worth, I applied to one of these positions without submitting letters. When HR emailed saying my application was incomplete and that I needed to get my letters submitted I replied saying that I was unwilling to do so. I said that the AAA is anthropology's primary professional organization and that it had asked that letters not be requested until after initial screening because it unnecessarily burdens reviewers and places stress on the relationships between job applicants and their colleagues. Finally, I said that if they could tell me I was on a long list after an evaluation of applications I would be happy to solicit letters. I assumed my application would be circular filed, but was then invited for an interview.
