  • APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications to begin on January 5, 2015. Position opened until filled (or recruitment canceled)
  • Can anyone clarify the letters of reference issue?  The advertisement on AAPA and AAA websites says 3-5 letters of reference must be submitted (up-front apparently?) but also says finalists will be required to submit "three to five current letters of recommendation (if not already submitted)".  So, does this mean that we don't send letters at time of submission?
  • Has anyone heard anything since submitting their application?
  • I didn't understand whether the letters should be sent or not either and I just received notice (2/16) that they have not received my letters of reference yet so please submit them now.
  • Same here. I replied and stated that the AAA has asked that letters not be requested from referees until after initial review of applications is complete. I also indicated that there had been some confusion about whether letters were requested a priori or after finalists had been determined. I said I'd be happy to provide letters if I'd passed initial screening and was now on a long list, but that I'd told my referees I wouldn't be asking for letters before initial screening was complete out of respect for their time.
  • Request for phone interview (2/25). (x3)
  • Interviewed today. No indication of timeline, but expect not overly drawn out...(x3-They mentioned being on a pretty short timeline)
  • Campus visit scheduled (x1)

  • Phone interview [posted 1/16]
  • Contacted 3/4 for reference letters and additional materials. Asked for a phone interview in the same email, to take place next week. • Request for Skype interview (2/3) (x2)
  • In the email I received, they mention 12 candidates were selected for Skype interviews.
  • Any news?
  • Nothing here.
  • During the phone interview I had on 2/6 they said they were hoping to notify candidates about campus interviews within two weeks and conduct the interviews during the first two weeks of March, the second of which is their spring break.  I have not heard anything further.  I assume we basically have to hear by the end of this week in order to keep to their stated campus interview schedule.
  • I was told the same. (x2 - also that they would let us know either way)
  • It is possible they have contacted candidates for a site visit that do not use the wiki. But I should add, I also remain optimistic.
  • Do you know something the rest of us don't or is that idle speculation?
  • Idle speculation, but always something to consider on here.
  • Good to know. I like to keep optimistic via a little self-delusion, so glad the door is still open for that.
  • While there is always the chance for any of these positions on here that non-wiki-users are getting contacted, if multiple people were told by the search committee that they would be letting us know either way I choose to believe that since I haven't yet heard a "no" that means I could still get a "yes"
  • 2/28 - Invited for an on-campus interview
  • Anything new?
  • 5/15 rejection email

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm going to assume that the AAA posting has the right information.
  • (11/25) Letters of rec requested. I'm wondering whether this is automatically going out for all applicants, since they asked for contact info up front.

University of Montana (MT) - Visiting Assistant Professor in Anthropology, non-TT (Deadline April 30 2015) - OFFER MADE[]

The University of Montana invites applications for a non-tenure-track Visiting Assistant Professor position in Anthropology, beginning August 2015, focused on Forensic Anthropology.  The teaching load will consist of four courses per semester, which will range from introductory courses through graduate seminars and will include classes in forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, osteology, forensic science, and other subjects in biological anthropology.  Duties will also include advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, including serving on graduate committees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology Certification (those without may still be considered, so you may still apply!)
  • A research agenda in forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, and/or skeletal biology as evidenced by funding, publications, presentations, and experience
  • A geographic focus that enhances the Department, preferably in an area or areas within western North America
  • Use of advanced computational methods in research
  • Experience with stable isotope analysis of bones
  • Strong teaching abilities, demonstrated through experience, favorable evaluations, and philosophy, preferably including experience with lab and online classes
  • No offense to anyone who applies to this, but this job ad makes me want to throw up. (x2) - We'd like you to have sophisticated analysis tools at your fingertips, but we'll have you teach 4/4 so you won't actually have time to use them. Also, you will serve on graduate committees, but we won't employ you for long enough to actually see anyone to graduation. Delightful. [Note from the person who has done this job for the past 3 years and was just hired on a TT line here, it's a tough load, but you'd have a ton of support from other faculty. There's a TT line that will be opening shortly and this person would have the inside track--which doesn't guaranty a hire, but does make it more likely.]
  • 5/8 - Skype interviews scheduled
  • 6/4 - Rejection. Offer made to other candidate.

  • A few things are worth noting about the position:
  • -The teaching load is reasonable---six courses a year on a quarter system which means two courses per quarter for three quarters (Sept-June).

  • -While the specific courses are TBD based on our developing curriculum needs, the faculty are in agreement that we want the lecturer to have  flexibility to teach at least some of the courses they have the most passion/experience with.
  • -The UW and the anthropology department cares a lot about diversity issues, so is particularly trying to get a diverse pool of applicants who have inclusive teaching and mentoring styles.

  • No news?
  • Has anyone received a rejection letter yet? (1/15)
  • Still haven't heard anything either way.

  • Yes. (1/31)

A Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment. We are seeking a teacher-scholar committed to undergraduate liberal arts education with an active research program in the health of modern humans. We welcome a colleague whose research and teaching combines biological research and attention to human inequality. This hire will join a small but growing anthropology program that supports a rapidly expanding Public Health minor popular with pre-Med students. The hire will create courses in biological/physical anthropology that would complement our existing strengths in cultural anthropology, in preparation for launching a new anthropology major. Candidates should provide evidence that they can maintain a successful program of research at an undergraduate-focused public college with a limited research budget. The standard teaching load is three courses (usually two preps) per semester. In addition to teaching and research, faculty participates in the TCNJ community through a variety of service contributions. Candidates must provide evidence that they can contribute to the development of our intellectual community.

  • Send a letter describing how your credentials meet these needs, a copy of your curriculum vitae, a recent publication, and names of three references by September 1, 2014, to Dr. Elizabeth Borland, Chair of Sociology & Anthropology, bioant@tcnj.edu. After initial review, candidates may then be asked to submit a statement of teaching philosophy, description of research program, student evaluations or other evidence of teaching effectiveness, and copies of additional publications. The successful applicant must present proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Request for additional materials (9/5) (x4)
  • Note: AAA website says that the deadline has been extended, now a rolling deadline. And I have inquired about medical anthro and they are happy to accept applications from medical anthropologists.[posted 09/16]
  • Link to new ad (review begins Oct. 1).
  • Request for Skype interview (x3) (10/8)
  • Interesting, since it appears they did a first round and are asking for more interviews - did they happen to give any information in the request about when they expected to be making decisions on campus interviews etc?
  • Wonder if it's too early to ask for an update...
  • Any news, campus interviews scheduled?
  • Rejection email (x3) (11/18)
  • Anyone heard from them?
  • 12/16: the position just got posted again (?): http://careercenter.aaanet.org/jobs/6700474
  • They will not reconsider applicants from previous rounds, FYI. Wonder what's going on with this search...
  • It looks like they are starting the search over. As mentioned above, they have re-posted the position but it is for "new applicants"...just in case anybody else was planning to email them. Kind of strange indeed.
  • I applied in the first round, had a skype interview, and a few days ago got an email asking if I still wanted to be considered for the position.
  • Jeez, that makes the email I got seem somewhat disingenuous. How unpleasant! They must realize that we check the Wikis...
  • I heard they cannot re-consider applicants who were rejected in the first round.
  • I had a first round Skype interview in October and just got called for a campus interview in February. Not sure how many people they are bringing in.

Dartmouth College (NH) - Biological Anthropologist - Sept. 1 - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

The Department of Anthropology at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time appointment at the tenure-track or tenured levels in biological anthropology. A preference exists for specializations in paleoanthropology or human biology and for advanced assistant or recently tenured associate professors, although post-docs and recent PhD recipients are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have a proven capacity for integrating lab and field research and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring. The appointment will begin July 1, 2015.

  • Formal review of applications will begin September 1, 2014 and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information for three references via Interfolio at the following link: http://apply.interfolio.com/25291.
  • 8/4 - anyone know what the course load is?
  • Since this is Dartmouth, would assume 2/2...
  • -They are on quarter system, so not sure what it would be
  • Does anyone experienced with Dartmouth know what the tenure requirements/expectations are? (8/11)
  • I've heard they might be kind of unrealistic like some of the other Ivies. Being a private Ivy, I doubt they release transparent data on tenure rates.  (x2)
  • For what it is worth I believe this is a replacement hire for a faculty member who was denied tenure
  • It also might be worth knowing that they have twice, in the last 4 years, hired associate professors (bioanth in 2010, archaeology in 2011) even though they explicitly advertised for positions at the assistant professor level.
  • 9/10: Submitted by the 1st, then today got an email from Interfolio asking me to fill out a 'General Applicant Information' form which basically is a summary of cover letter info (name, date of degree, diss title, sig pub, areas of interest, names and institutions of references). Kind of tacky to make the candidates resummarize themselves in this way after submission of full apps...
  • 9/26 - request for additional materials (x2)
  • 10/17 - any more recent news?
  • 10/19 - and I am curious to know what kinds of additional materials were requested.  Was this the 'General Applicant Information' sent to applicants after submission, letters of reference, or something else entirely?
  • 10/20 They have announced their shortlist
    • Was short list announced by email?
    • 11/21 Any recent news?
  • Offer made and accepted.

Indiana University Bloomington (IN) - Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology/Human Biology - Nov. 1 - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

The Department of Anthropology at Indiana University Bloomington seeks to hire a biological anthropologist at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) to start August 2015 with PhD in hand. This hire will be shared with the undergraduate interdisciplinary Human Biology program, with teaching responsibilities split equally between the two units. We are particularly interested in a scholar with an active laboratory and/or field-based research program in human biology (broadly defined to include molecules to morphology to behavior, and from the past to the present) that is informed by evolutionary theory and that addresses questions of broad anthropological significance. The candidate should demonstrate ability and interest in innovative undergraduate teaching in the human biology program (including case-based learning and interdisciplinary team-teaching) as well as a large introductory class in biological anthropology and upper-level and graduate courses in the areas of expertise.

  • Link to Apply: http://indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/1052
  • Review of applications will begin by November 1st and will continue until the position is filled. We may conduct preliminary interviews through Skype or at the AAA meetings in Washington D.C.
  • References were contacted for letters (~11/10) x 5
  • Anyone know if all applicants had refs contacted? Or is this some kind of long-long list?
  • I have not had references contacted, may be some kind of long list.
  • 12/1: Anyone heard anything about AAA interviews?
  • Invitation for skype interview (12/2/2014) x3
  • No news here - guess that's a rejection... x2
  • Any news on this front?
  • Fairly certain campus interviews have been scheduled. (Yes, they have.)
  • Can anyone confirm?
  • I  had a skype interview and asked the search chair afterwards when they might have a short list. She replied (on 12/12) that it will take several weeks to get university approval and that they're hoping to interview end of Jan - early Feb. Haven't heard anything since.
  • Yes, same here.
  • Sometimes departments schedule talks just to reserve the timeslots without having selected candidates yet- there will just be a placeholder (candidate 1, candidate 2, etc.) later to be filled. Two questions therefore: 1) Has anyone actually been invited to interview? 2) For the people who wrote "interviews have been scheduled", what's your source of information?
  • Yes, interviews have been scheduled.
  • This is now listed as a 1 yr. position on the AAPA website. This happened for a position at IU Northwest last year. It started as TT and then the funding was taken away. It is too bad IU cant get their act together.
  • Could they be hiring 2 candidates? I know the Human Biology program is a fairly new development.
  • Offer made and accepted for TT position.  Candidate delayed start date, thus the 1 year position.
  • And they emailed everyone who applied for the TT job to invite them to apply for the 1 year position - a bit obnoxious, right?
  • Did anyone receive feedback on what they were (and I guess are) looking for?
    • I was told by search committee chair that they did not consider any ADB candidates at all during the original search, though she did encourage me to apply for 1-year position (I'm ADB).

  • For full consideration, please apply by September 22, 2014.
  • FYI - recommendation letters. To me, this advertisement reads as if the system is going to automatically request letters for ALL applicants. I submitted my application a week ago, and no letter requests were sent. I emailed HR (no answer). Now I've called HR and the woman on the phone said, 'no, they would only ask for letters for candidates they were interested in'.
  • in this case we should scratch them from the list of universities violating AAA guidelines
  • Removed from AAA violators list
  • When I emailed HR about it, they manually sent the LOR requests to my recommenders. So, a bit confused.
  • Request for Skype interview (10/8/2014) x3
  • On campus interview scheduled [posted 10/24]
  • Offer made and accepted (12/5)

Discussion / Rumors / Speculation[]

Is it just me, or is this round looking like it might be a bit more thicker in terms of number of searches than the past two years? I'm hoping.

It's good to hope, but it's way too early to tell. (7/26/14)

Anatomy positions[]

Next year, should we consider having a separate section for gross anatomy positions?  Would this make it easier for everyone to navigate?

2/22: I like the idea of adding an anatomy section, lots of anatomy positions go unposted here. btw did anyone apply for the Marshall anatomy position?

  • I had a phone interview ~ Jan 20th, but haven't heard anything since. It's listed on the ecology wiki, but there have been no updates posted there. I also like the idea of an anatomy section.
  • Agreed - an anatomy section would be greatly appreciated.
  • Campus interviews are scheduled, they are flying me out to Huntington on March 12

2/24:How many candidates were invited?

  • I don't know, I honestly don't remember if they ever said a number in any of our correspondence

4/14: Has there been any news re: Marshall job?

  • An offer has been made, I don't know if it has been accepted

Miscellaneous - High Point University[]

Did anyone here apply for the High Point Anatomy job and receive an email that the search was deferred?

  • Yes, I received an email saying that the search is deferred.
  • It appears that this search has been re-posted on the American Association of Anatomists website. 1/28
  • 1/29: Saw the listing in AAA website but listed with additional teaching needs for biology classes. A bit different from the Exercise Science listing.

Misc: Has anyone heard anything about the University of North Florida job search?[]

Does anyone know why it is not listed on the wiki?

  • 1/29: Haven't heard from UNF. It's not listed here maybe just because no one bothered to do it?
  • 1/30: Letters were solicited from writers two weeks ago. Didn't hear anything since then.
  • Interviews were held the last week of January and are continuing the first week of Feb
  • Skype interviews, right? Were campus interviews scheduled?
  • Phone interviews
  • 3/2: Has anyone heard anything post-phone interviews?
  • 3/3: I still have not heard anything.  They said in the phone interview that they were planning to move forward with the search the week following phone interviews.  So, my assumption has been I did not make the short list....
  • 3/5: Yeah, they posted the job talks on the university acitivities calendar.
  • 6/5: Rejection email.

A Running List of Schools Violating AAA Career Center Request[]

The AAA has requested that search committees refrain from asking for letters of recommendation until initial screening of applicants has been completed:

"Solicitation of letters of recommendation should occur only after an initial screening of candidates to minimize inconvenience to applicants and referees. Names of references may be requested, however."

http://www.aaanet.org/profdev/index.cfm

Despite this (at least three year-old request), many institutions persist in requiring letters of recommendation as part of an initial application package.  This places a burden on both the applicant and his/her reviewers and places undue stress on advisor/advisee relationships.  Please list here the names of schools/job posts asking for up-front letters of recommendation so that we may alert the AAA to violations of their request:

  • UM Amherst
  • Whitman
  • University of Toronto Mississauga
  • University of California, Riverside
  • Purdue
  • University of Montana - Missoula
  • University of Central Missouri
  • California State University, Long Beach
  • University of Oregon - Clark Honors College
  • MacEwan University

For what it's worth, I applied to one of these positions without submitting letters. When HR emailed saying my application was incomplete and that I needed to get my letters submitted I replied saying that I was unwilling to do so. I said that the AAA is anthropology's primary professional organization and that it had asked that letters not be requested until after initial screening because it unnecessarily burdens reviewers and places stress on the relationships between job applicants and their colleagues. Finally, I said that if they could tell me I was on a long list after an evaluation of applications I would be happy to solicit letters. I assumed my application would be circular filed, but was then invited for an interview.

Misc. - Utah Valley University[]

  • Nothing was every posted on this position on this site.  Anyone know the status of it?  I imagine they are well into the search and I simply wasn't a candidate.
