About the Bard Early Colleges: Bard Early Colleges are founded on the belief that many high–school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty in seminar classes; they receive up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma. Bard Early Colleges begin preparing students for college work as early as the 9th grade and offer ongoing guidance and academic supports. Now in its second decade, the Bard Early College network serves over 2,300 students in campuses in Lower Manhattan, Queens, and Harlem, New York; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; and Baltimore, Maryland. Since 2003, Bard College has awarded 2,499 A.A. degrees to its early college students.

Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Cleveland, a partnership between Bard College and Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), invites applications for a faculty member in American and/or World Literature to join our faculty for the academic year beginning in August 2017.

BHSEC seeks candidates able to teach courses in literature; expertise in Caribbean, Latin American, African, Middle-Eastern or Asian Literature is especially desirable.  Expertise in the formal teaching of writing is also desirable. Candidates will teach American and/or World Literature at the high school and college levels; candidates will teach courses in their fields of specialization, as well as interdisciplinary courses in the Humanities.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in curriculum development (especially for new elective courses).
  • Commitment to regular and ongoing professional development.
  • Commitment to working with students individually and in small groups through tutoring, office hours and advising outside of regular class time.
  • Communicate regularly with administrators, parents and other stakeholders about student progress and engagement.
  • Participate fully in the life of the school, including student advising, club advising, and committee service.

Qualifications:

  • M.A. in Literature or related field (required).
  • Ph.D. at the time of employment, or candidates who are ABD (desired).
  • Expertise in Caribbean, Latin American, African, Middle-Eastern or Asian Literature (desired). 
  • Expertise in the formal teaching of writing (desired).
  • Experience teaching at both high school and college levels (desired).
  • Experience in urban settings (desired).

ENGLISH - Full-time, academic year, tenure track Assistant Professor of English, College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, to begin September 7, 2017. Ph.D. in English or related field is required with specialization in one or more of the following areas: Asian-American, Chicano/a, Latino/a, and/or Indigenous American literatures.

The typical teaching assignment is 12 units per quarter (with course load reduction in each of the first two years to help establish one's professional development activities), with correspondingly reasonable service and research expectations. All tenured and tenure-track faculty teach courses in their areas of specialization at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English or a related field, awarded prior to August 22, 2017. Specialization must be in Pre-Twentieth-Century American Literature & Culture with an emphasis in African American and/or Latino/a literature. Responsibilities: The University especially seeks individuals who will contribute both to their chosen disciplines and to the University’s commitment to student success. All faculty are expected to serve on departmental and/or university committees, contribute to teaching effectiveness, and demonstrate successful research, publication and other scholarly/professional/creative activities in their field of specialization. The standard teaching load is 12 units (4/4) per semester (3/3 for the first two years), although competitive reassigned time is available for research and/or curriculum development. All faculty in the Department of English teach a variety of classes, including General Education courses as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialization. The successful candidate for this position will likely be asked to teach surveys of American literature and will be encouraged to develop new upper-level and graduate courses in her/his area of expertise. While all full-time faculty remain eligible to teach lower division writing courses, the majority of these courses are taught by lecturer faculty. In practice, lower division writing courses are only assigned to full-time faculty members with specializations in composition or rhetoric, or to those specifically requesting such courses.

The Department of English at Farmingdale State College is a service department and does not have an English major. The department seeks a candidate holding a Ph.D. in English who specializes in U.S. literature, including its trans-hemispheric and diasporic dimensions. We welcome comparative, interdisciplinary, queer, and intersectional research. Special consideration will be given to candidates with documented research and teaching expertise in Black Studies. The fellow will be in residence at the University of Oregon’s English Department during academic years 2017-19. Fellows will teach 3 courses during that 2-year period. These courses will be developed and scheduled in consultation with the associate head of the English Department and cross-listed in Ethnic Studies. The fellow will make a research presentation to the English Department, Ethnic Studies Department, and other interested scholars. Further contributions may include offering a workshop for graduate students in the fellow's field of specialization or participation in student/faculty reading groups during their appointment. The fellow will offer mentorship to graduate students in English and, as a graduate program develops, Ethnic Studies. The fellow will work closely with a designated mentor or mentors who will be a senior faculty in English or Ethnic Studies. The fellows will earn a salary of $45,000 a year plus benefits, $1,000 a year in research funds, $750 a year for conference travel, a campus office, and up to $2,500 for a computer for use during the fellowship period. A budget for moving expenses may also be included in the fellowship package. Located 110 miles south of Portland, the University of Oregon has an enrollment of 24,000. The Eugene metro area (pop. 215,000) is in a region noted for its dynamic quality of life and progressive cultural environment. Position Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach seven courses over three quarters, including both general education and advanced courses in Native and Indigenous Literatures as well as additional courses determined by the candidate’s expertise and departmental need. The Department, the College, and the University value teaching and we expect you to be an exemplary teacher; to be current in your discipline; to engage students actively in their own learning; and to maintain rigorous standards for course content. We expect you to provide students with feedback on their course work and examinations, and to be available to students through regularly-scheduled office hours.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in English, Native American or American Indian Studies, American Studies, or a related field by time of appointment (or soon after)
  • Candidates with an MFA who can demonstrate experience successfully teaching literature courses will also be considered
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • Ability to teach courses in Native American Literatures and a secondary field, including both introductory and graduate courses
  • Demonstrated scholarly interest in the field of Native and Indigenous Literatures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach courses in US Multiethnic Literatures that engage Native and Indigenous Literatures through a comparative lens
  • Familiarity with Native and Indigenous Literatures in Canada
  • Expertise in critical approaches to gender, race, and sexuality
  • Demonstrated scholarly and teaching interests in a broad range of Native and Indigenous cultural production, including the ability to teach film as well as visual, digital, and fine arts
