The English Department invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position in contemporary ethnic-U.S. literatures with a secondary interest in film, cultural studies, or global literatures. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate courses in introductory literature, mid-level and advanced-level seminars. Qualifications: Ph.D., college teaching experience, a promising record of publication, and a strong commitment to teaching. Teaching load is between 5.5 and 6 courses, depending on Senior Project advising. All faculty are expected to participate in delivering college-wide first-year/sophomore seminars that emphasize writing and speaking. The successful candidate will provide evidence of excellence in teaching, ongoing scholarship and professional development. Position: Tenure-track Assistant Professor of English with a transdisciplinary focus on comparative race and ethnic studies in relation to citizenship, rights, and cultural belonging.
Binghamton University seeks applicants whose work on race and ethnic studies crosses disciplines and develops an approach compatible with a major campus initiative in Citizenship, Rights, and Cultural Belonging, one of five Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence (TAEs) that Binghamton University has identified for growth under its SUNY2020 plan. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of this TAE as an area of intensive research and teaching. The search committee will include members of the English department as well as members of the Citizenship, Rights, and Cultural Belonging steering committee. The project could focus on literature addressing issues of citizenship and rights by African American, Asian American, Native American, and/or Latino writers, on representations of cultural belonging and its challenges by transnational ethnic writers, on global perspectives on race and ethnicity in relation to rights, or on other topics related to the ways race and ethnicity inflect rights and cultural belonging. Candidates should be prepared to teach literature and culture from transdisciplinary and transnational perspectives and to engage in dialogue with faculty from other disciplines about citizenship, rights, and cultural belonging. The position includes graduate teaching at a research-intensive public university with a diverse student body.
Qualifications:
- 1. Completed Ph.D. by time of appointment in August, 2014.
- 2. Dissertation with a transdisciplinary approach to comparative race and ethnic studies and a focus clearly related to citizenship, rights, and cultural belonging.
- 3. Evidence of or potential for significant scholarly publication.
- 4. Evidence of excellent teaching.
Salary: competitive.

Desirable areas of expertise include Afro-Caribbean or Latino/a Literature and Culture. Possible secondary fields might include queer studies, drama, or visual culture. This faculty member will teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including topics within American literature from pre-Columbian to contemporary and including Latino/a literature. A typical teaching load is two courses for two terms and one course for one term during the academic year.
Minimum/Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in American literature with a specialization in Latino/a literature at the time of appointment. Evidence of high quality teaching and scholarly activities that result in referred publications. Ability to establish a program of research leading to scholarship that leads to timely promotion in rank and the granting of indefinite tenure.
Preferred Qualifications Significant teaching experience, publication record, and demonstrated scholarly innovation and commitment. We are especially interested in secondary specializations in the following literatures and/or methodologies: Chicano/a, Afro-Caribbean, Native American, Borderlands, or Environmental Humanities. Capability of teaching American lit survey pre-Columbian to contemporary. A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

We seek applicants working in theories of sexuality, racialization, and citizenship with a comparative emphasis in Latina/o and Mexican American Literatures.
