  • ^^This is my first year on the job market, but isnt this an insanely fast turn around? Just trying to know when to give up hope approximately...
  • I've been on the market for seven years. I've received rejections anywhere from two days to eighteen months after searches close, and of course (too) many departments never send a formal noification. Still, for those that do, I'd guess the average time from deadline to the first cut is somewhere between two weeks and a month, depending on the school, size of the application pool, and mood/efficiency of the hiring committee. I would't panic if you don't hear back after a week or two for most jobs.

    • [20 Mar] interview request
    • Ghosted after Skype interview x2
    • [4 Apr] Rejection email (no Skype interview request)
    • Super weird "anglophone" (by this I mean that while it was clearly intended to be polite and an effort to avoid hard feelings, it was also semi-insincere and very hard to understand) rejection email that makes it seem like I am not being rejected even though they couldn't bring me to campus. And it was sent to me well after I had already concluded that this one was over. Baffling. (x2)

  • Have folks who applied to this with interfolio letters had their letters downloaded yet? I thought it's sort of weird that there's no word that they've accessed the letters (as you usually get), but maybe they're just waiting untillater in the process.
    • My letters were sent via Interfolio and have been received. In fact, they were received the same day I submitted the application. Have you checked the application status on Academic Jobs Online?
  • Has there been any updates? (X2)
  • Not a peep yet. Haven't acknowledged receipt of application. Sad.
  • I did receive an acknowledgment that my application was successfully submitted. Additionally, the due date changed from 15 Oct. to 31 Oct. so it could be that the applications are just undergoing review.
  • I am rather surprised that there has not been any updates on this one.
  • Anything at all with this one? [Dec. 6]
    • I cannot help but to think interview requests have already been made though I find it incredibly odd that there has not been any information leaked. ***160.39.16.217 -- you are not an admin/moderator so do not remove my post***
  • I received an email asking for my letters on Dec. 4. I guess the Interfolio service didn't work with Academic Jobs Online. My guess is that they are organizing application files this week.
    • This is positive news. On a related note, my recommendations were sent through the Interfolio service and confirmed; I did apply very early, however.
  • Any word yet? Thanks to the poster above about the request for letters! Good to know. [Dec. 12]
  • Anything? At all? [Dec. 14]
  • Request for Zoom interview (Dec 17)
  • Email rejection received. They “wish you the best of luck in your job search in this difficult job market.” [Dec. 21] x 2

Any news?

Yes. They had a whopping 47 applicants (you don't put the number of applicants in a rejection letter when that number is embarrassingly low as it is in this case):

"Thank you so much for applying for the Visiting Assistant Professorship at Indiana University and the Assistant Editorship at the Journal of American History. I am sorry to inform that we cannot offer you the position.

This was a highly competitive search. We received applications from forty-seven very accomplished historians. Many of them brought extensive teaching and editorial experience, in addition to compelling agendas for research. Ultimately, we offered the position to the candidate whose qualifications most closely aligned with the needs of the IU Department of History and the Journal of American History.

We regret the lost opportunity to work with you as an editor, but perhaps we will work with you again one day as an author, a reviewer, a referee, or simply as a member of the Organization of American Historians. In the meantime, we wish you success in all your professional endeavors."

  • [15 Nov 2018] Campus Interview scheduled
  • [17 Dec 2018] Two offers extended
  • [22 Dec 2018] Both offers accepted
  • [13 Jan 2019] Wait, two offers accepted for one job? What am I missing here?
  • [13 Jan 2019] It's uncommon but not unheard of. R1s with deep pockets will sometimes let departments make an extra offer if the dept chair can make a compelling reason to the dean. In addition, Pitt tries to hire rockstars who are often juggling multiple offers or might leave after a year or two so there is likely some 3-dimensional chess going on here. Rather than make just one offer and potentially lose out on both your 1st choice, who is playing you for a counteroffer at their home institution, and your 2nd choice, who already has an offer in hand and needs to make a decision, make offers to both and let the chips fall where they may.
  • It is very common for departments to ask for two candidates to be hired in searches where there is either extrodinary talent or extrodinary need or a combination of both. Some searches are also priority hires for the university.
