Bates College (USA: ME) - 19th-early 20th c. (Asst. Professor / Mellon Postdoc)

• Tenure track faculty appointment in 19th & early 20th C US History
• Teaching load 2/year rising to 2/1/2: the post-doctoral fellow will have a two course teaching load the first year followed by an automatic conversion to a tenure track, assistant professorship in year two. The latter carries an annual five course load. Full-time teaching responsibilities include a one-semester survey course of U.S. History, thematic courses and seminars, and senior thesis advising. The annual teaching load is five courses spread over two semesters and a short-term in the spring.

• A: This is something that the institution requires of all candidates, regardless of what the specific search is. It is supposed to underline FGCU's commitment to undergraduate research but probably just confuses people. For history positions, you would normally write about the way in which you mentor students in historical research, which could include both in class and outside the classroom experiences. It's also fine to talk about what you *would* do at FGCU, not just what you have done (especially if you are ABD, no-one expects you to have worked with a lot of students independently.) It really doesn't have to be long - a couple of paragraphs is fine
