  • Review begins: 9 Nov. 2015 and continues until position filled
  • I don't know about your institutions, but neither of mine would release an OFFICIAL transcript to a student, so "transcripts for faculty positions must be an official copy scanned into an electronic format and attached to the application" is simply not possible.
  • Every institution that I've attended would give official transcipts to students. You have a right to your transcripts. Why wouldn't they provide them to students?
  • Let me rephrase that: if you scan official transcripts in, they "become" unofficial, as "COPY" appears all over the scan. It was the electronic attachment part of the instructions that gave me pause. It wasn't until I actually applied that I found their note saying unofficial transcripts were acceptable until the candidate was actually hired. Probably miscommunication with HR.
  • Has anyone heard anything about this?  Considering the AHA is less than a month away I suspected to hear something either way by now.  A flight to Atlanta is getting more interesting by the day...
  • AHA invites were sent out [24 Nov].

  • Send cover letter, current CV, statement of teaching philosophy, copy of graduate transcripts and three letters of recommendations to: History Search Committee Chair at HISsearch1@southernct.edu. All application materials must be submitted electronically.
  • For full consideration: 30 Nov. 2015.
  • FYI: this is posted as a "local job" (I'm paraphrasing). Applying to this job requires you to click one of two radio buttons: "I am already local" or "I will pay for my own relocation."
  • Whatever your status will have no bearing on the search committee's decision.
  • I think you're confusing this job with another one. There is no online application for this job, you just email your materials. There are no "buttons."
  • App can be submitted through AHA website. Look at the posting there.
  • The Search Committee is looking into this, but the job is definitely open to candidates from outside the "local" area (I'm on the Search Committee).
  • I discovered that the company (called Boxwoods) that uploads the job ad to AHA was responsible for the wording. The intention was to say that the faculty in this position will not be able to telecommute. The AHA has been contacted, and we are attempting to change the wording.
  • Also, there is some negotiable funding for relocation, although it is scarce.
  • Any questions about the Search can be sent to the chair of the department, Dr. Troy Paddock (paddockt1@southernct.edu).
  • The "local job" requirement has been removed per Search Committee request.
  • Any thoughts on whether someone without a science/technology focus should bother to apply? It seems like a very specific focus.
  • I'm of the mind that applying is better than not applying. I've been on enough searches (on both sides) to know that the person hired doesn't always perfectly match the job search ad. The only reason not to apply for a job (that you are remotely qualified for) is if you are not willing to go if offered the job.
  • [16 Jan] Skype interview scheduled
  • [19 Feb] Campus interviews scheduled 2/29-3/9
  • [15 March] Offer made and accepted.

      • Any update?
        • [8 Dec] Nothing here. But they requested so much in the way of writing, I imagine it'll take them some time, yet.
  • Any inside scoop on this one? It's been a long while, now.
  • [21 Dec] To anyone still waiting for news, you can probably stop: the on-line department calendar has posted dates for job talks. Congrats to the finalists.

  • [21 Mar] Job offered and accepted - https://www.facebook.com/groups/348042621910930/?fref=nf
  • What a nice rejection letter. Congratulations to the candidate selected! x2
  • Nice, yes. But also very weird. Esp. the first sentence, which praised the candidate who was selected in the most exotic terms I've ever read on such an occassion.

Bard College (USA:NY)[]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in 20thC US History, to begin Fall 2016
  • The successful candidate will be able to teach survey and advanced courses in U.S. History since 1876, including a 20th century U.S. history survey, along with thematically-based courses in interdisciplinary fields or candidate’s areas of specialization. • Candidates will be expected to have completed all the requirements for the doctoral degree by August 2016.
  • To apply, please send a cover letter describing current research and teaching experience, a curriculum vitae, teaching and research statements, a sample of written work (no more than 30 pages), relevant supplementary materials such as course syllabi and student evaluations, and three letters of recommendation (at least one addressing teaching) through Interfolio.com at: http://apply.interfolio.com/32919
  • Review begins: 4 Dec. 2015
    • Intend to interview at the AHA
    • So they assume all candidates are going to AHA or is it just going to be booking a ticket at the last minute if you get an interview?
    • That part is up to you.
    • Yup, should definitely speculatively buy plane tickets and book a room because a search committee might want to interview me. Perhaps this belongs on the talk page, but I find it frustrating to express a desire to interview at the AHA but wait to notify candidates one way or the other. In this case, is the committee really going to read 250+ apps, make a cut to 10-15, and notify candidates before winter break? And, if they do, should those candidates book an expensive ticket that could have been bought more cheaply a month ago?
    • They aren't on the AHA listing of people conducting interviews- perhaps they changed their mind.....
    • [16 Dec] Contacted for AHA interview  (x3)
    • [21 Jan] Contacted for campus interview
    • Job talks posted on their website: http://historicalstudies.bard.edu/events/
    • Any updates on an offer?
    • Heard through the grapevine that it was a failed search.
      • Wow. I know failed searches happen, but in a year with a mere handful of 20th C US jobs and hundreds of applicants, they couldn't find/select one person to meet their needs?
      • Agreed. It is a travesty though it may have saved someone from being the choice in a department divided over their hiring.
