  • Rumor is that they were turned down by their #1 choice who got an even better job, and the university's regulations prohibit them from offering to #2 even when they like the candidate.  So they have to re-run the search.
  • Indeed that is what happened-- I know the person who got offered this job last year and she went elsewhere, hence the replay.

Friends University (KS) - CANCELLED

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in US History, to begin no later than Aug. 2014
  • Responsibilities include teaching in United States History and related history courses in a traditional liberal arts college at the undergraduate level...
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in American Studies or History. ABDs with evidence of anticipated completion will be considered; Background in contemporary history/politics; Demonstrated passion for and effectiveness in teaching and assessment with a strong commitment to student engagement.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Three to five years of experience teaching History at the college level ... preparation to teach African American/Mexican American history and/or non-Western history; Experience initiating international study abroad courses; Knowledge of Kansas or Midwestern US History.
  • APPLICATIONS: Please visit our web site at http://www.friends.edu/employment to apply. Curriculum vitae, names and phone numbers of three professional references (please note the online application will only require two references to be completed but you must submit three written recommendations) and cover letter must be attached to the online application.
  • For full consideration: 1 Nov. 2013
  • Looking for clarification on the rec letters: The job ad states that you must submit three letters, but it also states that those letters will only be required of finalists. The online application had no instructions on sending rec letters. I assume this means they'll contact people if they want the letters, but otherwise don't bother. Anyone have any clue on this?
  • They want you to submit the contact info for three references, I assume. They will ask for letters only from finalists.  I'm more troubled by the fact that they want you to cut and paste your cover letter, and give you only 600 words.
  • Having served on a couple search committees I'll say this: the best qualified candidates don't need more than 600 words to explain why we should give them a look.  Here's an example of a great 9-word cover letter that would get you any job you wanted: "I'm Bill Cronon.  I wrote Changes in the Land."
    • Bill Cronon is leaving Wisconsin for Friends U? No wonder the job market is so competitive! I guess the next thing you'll be telling us is that Tom Sugrue is a lock for the Asuza Pacific job.
  • Has anyone heard anything on this job? (11/18)
  • Failed Search. Recieved an email today which read in part "we have decided to reevaluate this position and will not fill it for the 2014-2015 academic year." [posted 11/21]
  • Got email saying they have "re-evaluated" and decided not to fill this position this year. (11/21)
  • Glad I didn't waste the money on applying. I guess they decided that Bill Cronon wasn't available after all.[restored this deleted info - originally posted by two different users AFII (talk) 09:30, November 22, 2013 (UTC)]
  • Probably because they were holding out for Sugrue.

    • Interviews will be conducted at the AHA annual meeting in Washington D.C.
    • rejection email received 11/7, states they have selected 12 candidates out of over 200 applicants to interview at AHA (x14)
    • 6 days after the deadline?
  • I was discussing this with a friend who also applied to this position. It wouldn't surprise me if they started making a short list early in the process, then just benchmarked incoming CVs against their list. This is the kind of school that will attract lots of folks on the TT (or with tenure) who are looking for a new place; those kinds of folks will have more impressive CVs than those of us scrambling to stay above water, VAPing, sending out dozens of apps, and hoping that we can beat this dysfunctional labor market. That, or they cancelled classes this week and just plowed through the pile.
  • Agreed to the above.  I have a PhD in hand, a full-time job, and a book and I did not get an interview.  This is not to say that I think I'm a shoe-in for any job, but I would not be at all surprised if they're interviewing candidates who are a few years into the tenure track, or at the Associate Professor rank.  [replaced 8 Nov. after deletion - PLEASE use preview to make sure you're not removing text when you add comments AFII (talk) 08:04, November 8, 2013 (UTC)]
  • I have to say, I wasn't impressed.  This job specifically requsted a bunch of new syllabi, made from scratch, and tailored to their job ad on the first round. There's no way that they read those materials.  Why demand a bunch of materials that are time-consuming to produce that you have no intention of reading?  Just because you can?  And to address female PhDs as "Ms?" Completely unprofessional. x8
  • I'll never understand why first-round applications require anything other than CV, cover letter, and rec letters.
    • I can understand why a SC might want a teaching or research statement on the first round.  I have no problem with that, as long as they don't ask for anything they don't intend to at least skim. I know it's a buyer's market, but there's no reason to treat applicants poorly.

Lewis & Clark College (OR) - 19th & 20th C

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in 19th & 20th C US History, to begin Fall 2014
  • Ph.D. required at the time of appointment as a tenure-track member of the faculty
  • Teaching Load: 5 courses/year "The department seeks a candidate who can teach introductory nineteenth and twentieth century United States history survey courses. In addition candidates may teach topical or thematic courses such as Civil War/Reconstruction, U.S. West, African-American History or African Diaspora, American Indian/Native American History, Northwest or Portland history, Built Environment, and Environmental history"
  • "A complete application must include (1) a letter of application which includes a statement of teaching philosophy, how the applicant’s teaching at the College will contribute to a culture of inclusion and campus diversity, teaching experience, and research interests; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) evidence of teaching effectiveness; (4) sample of scholarship; (5) graduate transcripts, and (6) three letters of recommendation (uploaded separately by the referees). All materials should be addressed to Chair, Maureen Healy and must be submitted via apply.interfolio.com/14074. Click “Apply” to create your free account"
  • Deadline: 1 Nov. 2013
    • Make sure to do your homework and read the wiki for this same job that was posted two years ago. "Failed search" does not even begin to describe how dysfunctionally the department/administration of Lewis and Clark ran this thing....
    • So wait. This individual (from the 2011 search) did not get the TT job due to the Dean. The students rose up in protest. The department somehow kept her as VAP, but now they are running the same search with the same position description? 2013 must be the year with the record number of obvious inside hires. This one puts UNC-Asheville's to shame.
      • And more than 500 applicants in 2011--thousand of dollars and hours spent by hopeful candidates, and all of it completely wasted.
      • My favorite part was the head of the search committee telling the student newspaper that they had always intended to hire her and the search was, in fact, a fraud. And now they're putting people through it a second time.
    • The H-net listing linked to above is now dead and the posting on Highered has been deleted. Can we assume that the adminstration finally just gave the job to the poor VAP in question?
      • The job is still up at H-NET. Link above has been fixed. Also, the Interfolio link is still working. (10/5)
      • "Poor"? I wish I had a guaranteed job and got a year's paid research leave in order to plump up my publishing record... too many of us who paid out for this the first time around are adjunct.
        • Yes, but solidarity is important. The utter dysfunction of L&C isn't her fault. I hope she gets the job, too, and I hope L&C does the right thing, and not make us all jump through its ridiculous hoops unless it is really, genuinely going to treat us as potential colleagues. For myself, I've already been bruned by them once: I'm not applying--even if it were possible for me to get the job, I don;t want to be part of that environment. Or maybe I will apply just so that the SC has one more application to deal with....
      • Anyone hear anything back about this one? I am interested to see if this one actually will be an insider hire. Of all the jobs with inside hire warnings, this one seems like the most likely to actually be the case.
      • Haven't heard anything.  Am also curious. (11/18) (x3)  <-- I got a (automated, I thought) "acknowledgment of application materials" from Interfolio, but that's it. <-- Me too, come to think of it. Just nothing from the school itself.
      • Does anyone here have any news at all on this, personally or heard-through-the-grapevine? The deadline was so long ago, surely there must have been some developments....
  • Invite to AHA interview (12/11)
    • contacted by phone or email? (12/11)
    • Contacted by phone (12/11)
    • In response the above post, "My favorite part was the head of the search committee telling the student newspaper that they had always intended to hire her and the search was, in fact, a fraud." That's actually exactly NOT what happened, nor what the paper reported. Read the student newspaper more carefully.
  • I want my rejection letter dammit! (x2)

  • Ph.D. in history by June 2014 required; college teaching experience is strongly preferred. In addition to teaching courses in the U.S. history core, the candidate must be able to teach women’s history and public history. • Review of credentials will begin on November 8 and interviews will be scheduled for the January AHA conference in Washington, D.C.
    • Inside hire. (x2)
      • This one is pretty obvious to anyone doubting the first poster. There's an adjunct there who has a solid record of public history experience.
      • I would also like to point out that the first poster posted from an IP that has been banned from another wikia wiki for making obscene edits. I'm pretty sure all jobs are inside hires these days, but I don't find this source reliable given their history.
  • Contacted by phone for an AHA interview (12/10) x4
  • Rejection sent as an email attachment (12/11) x2
  • I received neither an email nor a phone call. (12/13) x2

  • Appointee will need to "Teach a variety of courses in colonial, revolutionary era, and early national American history, with courses in American Women’s History/Gender Studies preferred."
  • For full consideration: 11 Oct. 2013 but position is open until filled
    • Doesn't their chair teach all of these courses (and many others)?
    • I had the same question. Maybe they're just growing. They only have 4 faculty right now.
    • Any news on this?  I'm guessing by now that I didn't make the cut, but wondered.
    • Haven't heard a word.
    • My friend got a phone interview for this a few weeks ago.  They're apparently moving very fast and want to do on-campus interviews before AHA.
    • My friend has been offered the position.

New College of Florida

  • Tenure track Assistant Professorship in American history (specialization open).
  • PhD required by August 2014, when employment begins.
  • Apply online  provide a letter of application, CV, and a writing sample. Candidates should also have three letters of recommendation sent to ssc@ncf.edu.
  • Review of applications will begin 1 Oct. 2013, and will continue until the position is filled.
  • Anyone know the teaching load here?
  • There's a VAP who teaches American history already.  Proceed with caution.
  • Well of course there is. Are there any jobs that are not inside hires this year?
  • The VAP is there b/c their USist left and they needed someone to teach US history. It doesn't make it an inside hire.
  • Contacted for Skype interview (10/24)
  • Is this one already done? Any other "contacted for skype interview"?
  • My (second-hand, so grain of salt and all) understanding is that yes, they've already scheduled interviews with finalists.
  • I doubt that they have contacted finalists already. I just had my Skype interview yesterday (11/6), but it does seem like they are moving quickly. The committee wants to conduct campus interviews in late November/ early December, so finalists should be hearing soon. (11/7)
  • Right, sorry -- I should have been more specific.  I didn't mean "finalists" as in "people invited for campus visits."  I was simply responding to the "any other 'contacted for skype interview?' question above.  I meant only that yes, they had indeed contacted those they wished to interview.
  • Has anyone been contacted for on-campus yet? (11/16)
  • According to the history of the Wiki page, someone did receive an interview on 11/16, but they deleted the note shortly thereafter.
  • I'm not sure why or how my post was deleted. But I did receive an invitation for an on campus interview last week (11/18)

  • Inside hire??
  • Really? You people are paranoid. If people listened to this wiki, nobody would apply for any job because they are all, apparently, inside hires.
  • Nope, not an inside hire.  One of their American History profs retired in 2011. It has taken this long to get the line renewed.  [I heard this from an administrator at OCU]
  • Rejection by email (11/13) x2

  • They have a VAP who fits this description; been there since 2012. Of course, still apply, but odds are good he'll get the job.

    • The ASRC conducted this same search last year, but apparently didn't make a hire. Anyone know what happened?
      • You might be thinking of a different job. There was a 20th c. Af-Am history search in the Department of History last year, but I believe that search was successful (and this search is in a different department, with a different description).
        • No, I'm not thinking of the position in the history department. Last year both the history department and the ASRC had openings for practically identical positions. I know because I contacted both departments to verify that they were conducting separate searches and then applied for both of them. I know that the history department made a hire, but apparently the ASRC did not. I'm wondering what happened with last year's ASRC search.
        • after quite a long period of consideration, their first choice turned the job down to stay where she was. I don't know if they had a second choice or if by then it was too late to move to such a person.

X2
    • I don't want to be a pessimist, but my guess is that UK requested writing samples from people they're actually considering interviewing but did a global addition of a writing sample to the interfolio application so that it appears on everyone's file. But I could be wrong...just my two cents.   By the way, I didn't get a request for a writing sample either.   [x2]

  • Review begins: 1 Oct. 2013
    • This is an inside hire.  There's a very well-liked VAP whom this job ad fits completely.
    • This is actually the most obvious inside hire I have ever seen. Even more so than last year's UMKC and Westminster jobs.
    • UNCA actually has something of a reputation for this kind of thing.  The HIstory Department is good at bringing in VAPs to replace those who move on or retire, then "grandfather" them in if they prove popular with everyone.  They haven't conducted a valid cold search in many years.
    • Sounds curious. How do we know the "well-liked VAP" or a supporter did not write the three prior posts as a means of throwing folks off the trail? I have seen several supposedly "inside hires" work out in varying ways so everyone should take the above comments with many grains of salt. (10/2).
    • I wrote the first of these three, but not the other two.  I have never met the current VAP, but teach at another school in the area & therefore know how he is thought of.  I was merely trying to encourage folks not to get their hopes up, not telling people not to apply.
    • I wrote the third comment, and I know from having been a History major there, and--much later--an applicant for an open position in the department.  I was encouraged to apply by my mentor, and despite an excellent c.v., was not even contacted for a phone interview.  I got the word from a friend (full prof.) in another department about how the search was rigged, and the history of searches in the History Dept.

  • Anyone considering applying for this might want to look at the littany of confused comments below the identical job posting from last year. They conducted a phone interview with numerous people, and then never followed up with ANY of them. They also didn't have the decency to inform anyone that the search had closed (unless, of course, the search has been ongoing for the past eighteen months). I know for a fact that some of the people they snubbed already held tenure-track positions at the time they applied, while others went on to get tenure-track positions at other universities. In other words, they were strong candidates. Be warned.

    • any word on this one? (11/13)
    • Haven't heard anything, but I think it's rather early still (11/15)
    • Received request for additional materials (11/20) (x11)
    • Anyone have any idea whether additional material requests are usually all sent the same day?
    • The email came from interfolio and was sent to my junk mail folder, so if you might check there if you're still waiting. (x2)
    • Wow, 11 people on the wiki got requests for more materials!  That seems like a lot.  I wonder how many people made it to that stage.
    • Received request to interview at the AHA (12/10) X4
      • Was the request by phone or email? -- email through Interfolio, same as the original request for additional materials.
      • Has anyone else NOT received either an AHA interview or a rejection? I would expect a confirmed notice of rejection after being asked to prepare additional materials... any ideas?
        • Same, I made the req for extra materials but apparently not an interview request (12/11) - I think we can just read rejection into it + move on, and expect our more formal rejections when the search is over. (x3)

University of California, Berkeley

  • Tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate professor, with a start date of July 1, 2014.
  • We are seeking a historian of the United States, any period, with a specialization in women, gender, and/or sexuality.
  • Applications must include a detailed letter, a Curriculum Vitae, all published and unpublished scholarly work ready for examination (such as the dissertation or dissertation chapters, a book or book manuscript, articles, and book chapters), and three letters of reference. Ph.D. or equivalent is required by date of hire.
  • To apply, please go to the following link https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF00230.
  • Deadline:  21 Oct., 2013.
  • Is the committee really going to read the reams of documents they are asking for?  Why not ask for one sample and then request more from short listers?
    • This appears to be how Berkeley does things. They did the same thing last year in their open US history search. If I had to guess, they are just cutting out an unnecessary stage in the process. They probably do cut to a short list before reading most of the writing samples carefully, but this saves the step of having to go back and ask for new material from that list (and allows them to see what people actually have produced). Seems like a good strategy to me (so long as they are not printing stuff out if they don't read it!)
    • The above poster is problably right - but that said, I applied for a job at Berkeley a few years ago and was lucky enough to get an interview. I've been on the job market for years now and I've never seen a committee read more. Before the interview, at least two members of the committee had read my entire dissertation.
  • So I should be hearing from them any day, right?  This one's in the bag.  Can't be more than me and like 2 or 3 other people . . .
  • Anyone hear anything? The deadline was almost a month ago. I am guessing they take their time because there is no need for any "request for more materials." 11/20
  • Request for AHA interview received via email, 11/27 (x5)
  • Are they interviewing associate level folks at AHA as well?
  • Request for AHA interview received via email, 12/3
  • Is that an associate interview? Has any associate professor been contacted for an interview? Thanks. 12/4

    • n.b.: Four letters. Just to make life more complicated?
    • The four letter thing seems to be SOP for Chapel Hill.  That doesn't make it any less annoying, but at least it's not just this search committee.
    • Yes, it's a university policy, not one the department has any control over.
  • Review begins: 1 Dec. 2013
  • Any news? Does anyone know if they plan to interview at the AHA?
  • No news for me. Since app review only began on 12/1, my fingers are still crossed!

  • Contacted by phone for an AHA interview 12/3 (x4)
  • Rejection (by email) 12/4.  A very classy rejection, I must say. (x4)
    • I thought it was a nice rejection as well. But I did have to laugh at "your candidacy has NOT been advanced and our consideration of your file is at an end." ALL CAPS!!!!
      • Yeah, but then you know they'd get that person who didn't read the email all the way through and missed that it was a rejection because the search chair was trying to be nice about it.
  • Has anyone else not received a phone call for an interview or a rejection email (I was asked for the additional materials)? --> Yes, I have neither been rejected nor have received a request to be interviewed.  Perhaps we're either on an alternate list or in purgatory.  I also received the request for more materials. • For full consideration, apply by 1 Feb. 2014
  • As someone employed by "that other school down the road," I have to say that the previous comment is quite uninformed and curious at best. If a dept. at Duke wants to do an "inside" or targeted hire, they will not waste time running false national searches. Case in point, look at how quickly (and silently) the History dept. hired Vincent Brown from Harvard a few years back. There was no national search and, as far as I know, the dept. did not even create a search committee... If a dept. at Duke runs a national search, it should be clear to all that it is a legitimate search, especially when they have SO MANY resources for targeted, partner, insider, and diversity hires.

          • Does anyone know if this search has concluded?

    • The current department chair's scholarship is certainly revolutionary, in a cosmic sense, but he is not a historian of Revolutionary America.
    • Department chair is more Antebellum/CivilWar/ Reconstruction than Colonial and Revolutionary America. I doubt this is fishy.
    • Intend to interview at the AHA
    • They ran this search last year and invited candidates to campus, what happened? Is there a budgetary problem at John Carroll, is the department dysfunctional, or did they offer the job and not get their top choice?
    • No job offers made last year. No budgetary problems. Dept. functions well. Looking for the right "fit" for all parties involved.
  • Sent out invitation for AHA interview 11/11 (x4)

  • Rejection email received.  They have "selected quarter-finalists." (10/10) x2
  • Semi-finalists (preliminary interviews) selected (10/23)
  • Any insight on the fields they were looking for? They advertised for two very broad period-defined positions in a department that seems to specialize in thematic fields. Also, were they interested in fresh Ph.D's, early assistants, experienced assistants? Curious because I applied for one of these positions hoping to return home to western PA. <--- Me too, But hey - the world is now yours.  Feel free to roam about the Country.
  • Rejection email received. Finalists have been selected. (11/1)
  • Have any of the finalists heard from the chair?
  • Campus visits scheduled. (11/8)
  • Rumor has it this is a failed search.
  • Have you heard that the search for both positions has failed or just one of them?
  • Has anyone read (and heeded) the "Universities to Fear" wiki regarding this department? Scary stuff, but a job is a job I guess. (12/16)

  • Review of applications will begin 1 Nov. 2013
  • Any updates? (11/17)
  • Rejection Email (11/25)(x6)
    • As a bonus, my rejection was addressed incorrectly
    • One of the strangest rejection emails I have ever gotten.
      • Wikirules dictate that you must share examples with the rest of the class.
      • I don't know, I thought it was entertaining--as far as rejections go anyway.  I've definitely gotten worse :
"I’m writing to let you know that you are not among the initial group we are inviting to the AHA to interview for the Early America to 1815 position.

Although I know this is not the best of news, please do not think of it as final news: we will keep all applications for the position alive until we have completed or closed the search.

That being the case, I will postpone any expressions of regret or wishes for good luck.  For now, I’ll just thank you for making our decisions so difficult!"
      • Wow: won't even wish you good luck!? That's just cold.
      • Meh.  Their adjuncts have Ph.Ds from Harvard and Oxford.  They clearly are looking for candidates from big name schools with monographs to their names.
        • Funny because I've got both of those things and was rejected nonetheless.
          • This position is a replacement for their "star," who was poached to an endowed chair by another institution last year.  I cannot be sure, but it would not surprise me if they are after someone who is already fairly established.
            • Yeah, I know. The whole process is still very frustrating.
              • Indeed.
      • So...candidates with a monograph are less qualified than those without them? How does that work exactly? --> Candidates with monographs are more qualified than candidates without monographs, which is what the previous commentator stated.
  • So, has anyone actually had a yes from them yet? 12/10
  • Yes, AHA interview.

  • Deadline: 22 Nov. 2013
  • I assume Bing is interviewing at the AHA (given that they are for the early America position)? Is that right? Anbyone know?
  • Rejection email received (12/6) x5
  • Wow, I've never received a rejection letter that outright insulted candidates before: "Some were not quite as far along with their scholarship or as experienced in teaching and mentoring as we would like."  Classy!
  • over 150 applicants.  I'm probably one of those with fewer publications and years teaching than other candidates.  I wasn't insulted, I just accepted there were people more qualified than myself who applied.  Quick rejections make me hopeless. (x2)
    • Having been at the rodeo for a few years, I didn't find the rejection insulting in the least--I've had truly insulting rejections. I assume that, since Binghamton is NY's flagship research university, and since there's been so much discussion over rethinking the SUNY system, that they're strategically hoping to hire someone pretty polished. Though, as one of those who got the rejection e-mail, it still stings (I was perfect for the job!).
  • AHA interview scheduled via email (12/6) x2

  • It always weirds me out when I don't get an interview but also don't get the rejection that others received.  The paranoid side of my brain always wonders if they even received or read my application.  Anyone else in that boat?
    • You're most likely B-listed.

  • What's the good word? (12/5)
  • No news as of 12/9 (x4)

  • I heard they did some peliminary interviews at the SHA.
  • "Decision has been made, candidate accepted offer" [restored this info, deleted by another user AFII (talk) 09:32, November 22, 2013 (UTC)]
  • If the above is correct  this search was conducted in grave-like silence. Did they already have someone tapped for the job? That seems to be the way of things in the academy now.
  • Sadly, I have been able to confirm this through multiple sources.
  • There were preliminary interviews at the SHA and the committee moved quickly to bring finalists to campus. The person who got the job had no affiliation with the department previously.

    • At least they limited the search to a few areas of focus.
    • Does anyone know where Interfolio should email letters of rec? I've submitted the rest of the application, but the email address is no longer available.

Carnegie Mellon University

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in US History
  • Candidates' research should focus on the U.S. in the twentieth century, with an emphasis on the interwar or post-World War II period.
  • Teaching Load: 2/2
  • We encourage applicants to demonstrate how their research and teaching will contribute to one or more of our graduate program's thematic strengths in environment, science, technology, and health; African American and African diaspora; culture and power; labor and politics; and gender and family.
  • Ph.D. should be in hand by August, 2014.
  • Send letter of application; full CV; graduate transcript; a single writing sample the equivalent of 60 or fewer double-spaced manuscript pages; evidence of excellent teaching; and three letters of reference to Nico Slate, Chair, Twentieth-Century U.S. History Search Committee, Department of History, Baker Hall 240, Carnegie Mellon University, 5000 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15213-3890.
  • Deadline for applications: 1 Oct. 2013.
  • So, I'll go ahead and ask the question - they have a Mellon Postdoc and an adjunct that will meet the thematic goals of the program. Is this an inside hire?
    • I would not assume that with CMU.
  • Anyone know if this can be emailed to Prof. Slate or whether they're only accepting hard copies?
  • This posting has been taken off the Chronicle website and is not on CMU's website. Any know the current status?
    • It's still up at H-NET  (9/22)
  • Now that the deadline is less than a week away... does anyone know if materials to arrive by Oct. 1 or be postmarked by Oct. 1?
    • Generally, most places will accept materials postmarked by 10/1. Not sure about CMU specifically. Certainly they will not have time to go through the 450-500 applications they will receive for this job and they will have time to add new materials to the file without disrupting the search.
    • Has anyone received any feedback concerning this position? (11/4)
      • No (11/5)
      • I emailed today (11/11) to see if my application was received. I was told applications are under review and, if anything is missing, I will be contacted.
      • Rejection email stating they received a "very large number of applicants." (11/13)x4, (11/14)x1, (11/15)x4 - they were "impressed" - but alas, not impressed enough!  it was very kind of them to let us know early though.
      • I despise condescending e-mails like this... "we will not be able to consider your candidacy further at this time." To be fair, you will be able to, but you have chosen not to. (x2)
      • Sloppy mixing of fonts and font sizes in rejection email.
      • Is anyone else still waiting on a rejection email? - Yes, I haven't heard anything one way or the other (11/15) (x3)
        • I just heard (11/15). I'm guessing they're unaware of mail merge (the technical knowledge of the rest of CMU seems not to have made it to the history department), and the admin person is sending them individually, going down a list of some sort. Or maybe you made the short list.
        • I still haven't heard anything one way or the other - anyone else? (11/18)
        • I haven't heard - maybe they did one cut and are now going through the smaller group to make another cut before extending interview invitations? (11/18)
        • Not to discourage you, but they have already made interview invitations for AHA (I have heard through the grapevine) (11/18)
        • I hadn't heard anything & emailed the search chair - he confirmed that AHA invitations have gone out & that I hadn't made the cut.  Those of you who haven't heard at all are, sadly, likely in the same boat. (11/19)

Dartmouth College (NH) - US civil rights

  • Tenure track, open rank professorship in the history of twentieth-century US Civil rights and social justice movements, including comparative and transnational perspectives, to begin 1 Jul. 2014
  • "Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, and a short writing sample to http://apply.interfolio.com/22198"
  • Deadline: 1 Nov. 2013
    • I heard, via a committee member, that they are not going to consider ABDs. Whether this is a pre- or post-deadline sorting of materials decision is unclear (11/15)
    • Received request to interview either at the AHA or via Skype (kudos to the search committee for giving the option). (11/19) x3
    • "Would those who got interviews mind sharing their research focus?  I'm curious if this turned out to be an African-American civil rights search, or if they really did cast a broader net." [<-restored question deleted by another user AFII (talk) 09:32, November 22, 2013 (UTC)]
    • What a god-awful question to ask. Who in their right mind would respond given the clear set of assumptions made, particularly in the follow-up statement?
    • Would those who got interviews please wait until after the decision is made or until you are out of the running for the search to answer the above question? There is no need to reveal any information about yourself publicly....especially when the search committee and the other candidates can read this very well-known forum. (x2)

Duquesne University (PA) - Since 1914

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in the History of the United States since 1914,
  • "The successful candidate will have a PhD, an active research agenda substantiated by publication, and will employ an innovative thematic approach to the field.  Candidates must also have some experience in teaching"
  • Teaching load 3/3: including " the graduate seminar in twentieth-century US history, upper-level undergraduate and Masters’ level topical or methods courses, the second part of the US History survey, and courses within the University Core Curriculum"
  • "Duquesne University is Catholic in mission and ecumenical in spirit"
    • Love the selective highlighting there.  [21 Oct.] I generally flag religious affiliation in all posts, not just this one, as it's a serious issue for many applicants.  It's not a comment on this particular job. AFII (talk) 14:25, October 21, 2013 (UTC)
    • I see.  Well, then I suggest applicants make sure that they know the difference between Catholic orders and show that understanding in their job letters. Catholic at Boston College (Jesuit) doesn't mean the same thing that it does at Duquesne (Spiritan) or, say, Providence College (Dominican) or St. Bonaventure (Franciscan).  Knowing that a school is Catholic is only the tip of the iceberg.
  • "To apply, please send a cover letter, CV, graduate transcript, teaching statement and/or sample syllabi, and three letters of recommendation electronically to history@duq.edu.  The letter and inquiries should be addressed to: Dr. Elaine Parsons,U.S. History Search Committee, Duquesne University, Department of History, 603 College Hall, Pittsburgh, PA  15282"
  • Deadline: 22 Nov. 2013
    • Intend to interview at the AHA
    • Duquesne University: Failing to bargain in good faith and allowing elderly adjuncts to die in abject poverty as part of a proud Catholic tradition. Rerum Novarum anyone?
    • It looks like they have a visiting prof. who does "Contemporary History." Does anyone know about the potential for an inside hire in this search?
      • By now, you should realize that every job is most likely an inside hire. The individual there received an ACLS fellowship and a distinguished teaching award at CMU. No doubt his is doing a good job...he looks local to Pittsburgh....so yeah, it is more than likely his. He is one of the lucky chosen ones. You are not.
      • Someone in the York, PA area thinks they should remove my comment just above. I disagree.
      • Universities with high aspirations don't usually hire local PhDs for tenure-track jobs.  Duquesne wants to be perceived as a world-class school, not something for the local yokels.  If the visiting professor has a spouse in the department, I'd think it a possible inside hire.  But if the person just lives in Pittsburgh because he went to CMU and happened to take a temporary job at Dequesne, then I would not assume an inside hire.  Colleges and universities in the 'burgh are really good for hiring each others new PhDs for temporary jobs; this "visiting professorship" could be some sort of glorified (and better paid) adjunct position.  CMU grad students and PhDs teach at every school in the city.  Same goes goes for Pitt PhDs and grad students.  So, who knows if it's an inside hire or just business as usual.  Don't worry about it though.  Just send in your application and don't give it another thought unless you get an interview.

  • Deadline: 1 Nov. 2013
    • Inside-hire alert. But don't take my word for it. Do some research and you'll see, then thank me for saving you the time and money.
    • Good for her. She looks like she has put her time in and she has a book with a very good press.
    • I respectfully call BS on that one. The school should then just promote her to the job as an inside hire, instead of asking for a laundry list from "applicants" (both transcripts and recs cost $$ for most of us) and then running a fake search, including sucking up people's time and $$ at the AHA/on-campus visits for a job they'll never get.
      • Most colleges and universities have rules that make just promoting someone internally to a TT position very difficult -- often they mandate a national search. It certainly is a waste of time and money (and a real insult to the presumed inside hire, too, if they happen to not get hired for their own job), but it's not at all uncommon. I know that doesn't provide any help or insight about this particular search, but it might be helpful to realize that they're not just screwing with us for the sake of screwing with us -- they're screwing with us because of reasons.
      • That makes it all the better then.
      • Of course it doesn't, I was trying to provide some perspective.
      • Perspective appreciated-- and accurate, certainly! But I would add, such committees still have the option to ask only for a cover letter/cv rather than a laundry list/official transcripts etc. AND to Skype their "fake" interviews rather than make people pay out for the AHA.
  • Make sure to spell the name correctly if you do apply. It's Guilford, not Guildford.
    • The great thing about a wiki is that it's possible to edit spelling mistakes - possibly more useful than just pointing it out! AFII (talk) 07:39, September 16, 2013 (UTC)

    • Intend to interview at the AHA "We will contact finalists in mid-December to schedule interviews"
  • Anyone know what happened to this position. It was not posted on Oxy's website 30 days before deadline.
  • I don't think anything has happened to the position. I called a couple weeks before the deadline to ask a question and there was no sign that anything had changed, and as you see above they say they will contact finalists in December. So they are likely just reviewing applications, which they just started doing about a week ago.
  • I don't think anything happened to it either. I called a week before the deadline to ask a question and there was also no sign that anything had changed.
  • Invitation for AHA interview, 12/6

College of Charleston (Sth Carolina) US History & World

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in US and World History
  • "The successful candidate will teach upper-level courses in his/her areas of interest and training and survey courses in pre-modern and/or modern history.  The successful candidate will be able to contribute to interdisciplinary programs, such as the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program, Asian Studies, African Studies, International Studies, Jewish Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and/or Women's and Gender Studies.  Candidates must have, or expect to complete, a Ph.D. in History before August 15, 2014"
  • Applicants should submit a cover letter, c.v., three letters of recommendation, a writing sample, transcripts, and sample syllabi electronically at https://jobs.cofc.edu"
  • Deadline: 15 Oct 2013.
  • H-net ad said November 15th, but it looks like their website had October 15th all along.  Did anyone ask about this yet?
  • The due date is November 15th.  The head of the search comittee let one of my referees know.  However, I ultimately decided not to apply for this position because my degree granting institution was not nearly as prestigious as the institutions from which their adjuncts received degrees.  Many of their adjuncts received their Ph.D.s from Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, and Princeton.  In addition, their faculty all have prestigious degrees.  They appear to be a school looking for a candidate with a big name degree and big name fellowships.
    • Is this post supposed to be serious?
    • I don't know, but C of C's slew of adjuncts from elite schools could just be a sign of how bad the job market is and not necessarily reflective of C of C's supposed negative attitudes towards "lesser" PhD programs.  An abundance of adjuncts from Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, and Princeton signifies to me that even people from the best schools are having trouble gettting decent jobs.  It's a sign that maybe those from "lesser" schools should avoid not just this job but the job market altogether.  However, if you didn't go to Harvard and you got a PhD anyway, you might as well apply for the position.  It's the least you can do with a doctorate, no matter where you went to grad school.  It's not like you're not competing with ivy league graduates for other positions.  Not applying is the best way to guarantee that you won't be hired.
    • Has anyone heard from them recently? (11/20)
    • Is there really a need to go through every job you applied for and ask "Has anyone heard from them recently?" or "Anyone heard anything?"
    • Let's say there isn't a need. Is there really a need to ask if there is a need?
  • They have an adjunct, a 2012 PhD, who fits this job description perfectly. I'm curious about how real this job search really is.
  • Request for a Skype interview (12/10)

    • I've submitted all of my materials and my letters are all in, but the status of my application still says "in progress" - have I missed a step?  I do have a confirmation number. -- Normally when the online apps give a status of "in progress" they mean the hiring process, You usually get that status after you've sucessfully submitted.
    • I called the department check with the same problem as above, and the administrator confirmed that "in progress" with confirmation number meant that the application has been forwarded to the committee.
    • Request for AHA Interview.
    • Can you share the date of the request?
