  • The successful candidate will teach Modern History (18th to 21st centuries) and Urban and Environmental History in all programmes taught at the Institute of History (BA History with a focus on Modernity, Joint BA, MA History, History for Teachers at secondary schools, MA of Education). It is expected that she/he will take active part in the further development of these programmes (in particular the planned interdisciplinary MA “Urban Studies”).
  • The successful candidate has to have an excellent track record in at least one of the two areas of Urban and Environmental History and should be willing and be able to teach in the other. She/He should contribute to at least one other key area of research of the department. Research perspectives beyond Europe or in theory or methodology of history would be an advantage. We expect a readiness to collaborate with colleagues, also beyond the range of the Humanities and Social Sciences. We expect experiences from the acquisition of external funding. Participation in academic administrative work is of importance.

  • This tenure track position is broadly conceived and we welcome applications from scholars working on any dimension of race and sport, including, but not limited to, cultural studies, media, history, social science approaches and urban studies.   • FASoS is seeking an assistant professor with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research in Cultural History (19th and 20th centuries). We are particularly interested in applications with a strong interdisciplinary profile (particularly links to heritage studies and with a focus on the uses of history) and research that stresses the regional dimension of European cultural history (ideally in a global perspective).
  • Suitable candidates will have a PhD degree in a relevant humanities/social science discipline (e.g. cultural history, cultural sociology, heritage studies). Fluency in English is a prerequisite, while non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch (basic level).   • In order to verify whether the individual performance meets the requirements of a permanent employment, an evaluation process will be opened not later than four years of service. The professorship will be funded by the „Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses“. The aim of the programme is to pave the way for a secure career in academia for early stage researchers. Tenure track professors at the HU Berlin are expected to carry out research and teach, as well as be active on various university committees and acquire leadership and management skills. The concrete requirements out of the framework catalogue [1] will be specified in the course of the appointment process.
  • The professorship deals with problems of applied computer science in the historical sciences. The future position holder should represent the subject as broadly as possible in research and teaching by linking questions and methods of history with those of computer science. An interest in the changes in historical knowledge through the digitisation of its information and transmission media is most welcome.   • In a joint appointment procedure based on a cooperation agreement, the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe invite applications
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate a proven expertise in the field of Digital History. Ideally, we are looking for someone with specialist knowledge on the history and cultural heritage of East Central Europe as well as experience in developing digital knowledge resources and teaching programs. The successful candidate must also be willing to immerse her or himself in the content and regional focus areas of the Herder Institute. Knowledge of an East European language is an advantage. Internationally recognized research and successes in applying for third-party funding (for example, through the DFG or BMBF) are required. Preferably, applicants have experiences in managing projects or network structures.
  • The successful applicant for this position will be expected to make a strong contribution to the JLU while at the same time actively supporting the development of the Herder Institute’s research infrastructures. The professorship will also involve further developing Digital History as a field of research as well as developing and carrying out independent and third-party funding applications for projects related to Digital History. A further responsibility will be to collaborate with researchers in visually-based subject areas on topics pertaining to visual history. We are looking for an applicant who will have a strategic interest in cooperating with partners in East Central Europe, both within universities and in non-university organizations, on questions around the Digital Humanities. The position will also involve working at the Institute for History at JLU, the Center for Media and Interactivity (ZMI), the Giessen Center for East European Studies (GiZo), the International Graduate Center for the Study of Culture (GCSC) as well as participating in the Herder Institute Research Academy (HIRA). An important part of the role will also entail overseeing aspects of gender equality and representation in both research and teaching.

This position will end on June 30, 2021; this position may be extended or become renewable
  • The Project Director will be responsible for linking diverse community members within and beyond the University in order to recover and acknowledge the history of exclusion on the campus, especially through the voices of those who experienced and resisted it. This project has been proposed in response to a recently completed report about the history of organizations named for the Ku Klux Klan that operated on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus in the 1910s and 1920s.   • 9 month tenure track assistant professorship in the History of Physical Culture and Sport Studies, to begin Aug. 2019
  • The successful candidate will teach and mentor graduate students in the doctoral program in Physical Culture and Sport Studies, teach in the department’s undergraduate major in Physical Culture and Sport, and assist with the closely affiliated master’s and undergraduate programs in Sport Management.
  • Candidates should have: 1) Demonstrated knowledge of the history of physical culture and the ability to teach a variety of courses such as Historical Research Methods, The History of Physical Culture, the History of Exercise Science and Sport Medicine, Historical and Ethical Issues in Physical Culture and Sports and other courses tied to their research expertise; 2) A doctoral degree in Kinesiology or Health Education with a specialization in Sport History or other field in the Sport Humanities; or a doctoral degree with a research specialization in the history of physical culture, history of exercise, or history of sport from departments such as History, American Studies, Women and Gender Studies, African-American and Diaspora Studies, Latin-American Studies, other programs in race and ethnic studies, or other programs in the Humanities. (ABD candidates will be considered if graduation occurs before August 2019); 3) An established record of scholarly publication and presentation in the field of physical culture history, sport history, and/or sport studies.

  • You'll need: A good first degree, complemented by a PhD in History or a related subject; The proven ability to produce world-class research, including a research plan which supports the activities of the department; Proof that you have led national or international research groups and networks, mentoring early career researchers and making an internationally recognized contribution to the development of research fields; A track record of contributing significantly to the development of PhD programmes and the supervision of PhD students; The proven ability to develop successful research project proposals, with the scope to secure funding or generate income; Experience of delivering high-quality teaching across lectures and in smaller study groups, with the ability to attain the rank of Principal Fellow of HEA; Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team.
