Applications are invited for the position of assistant professor (adjunct) in English-language literature and media in the Department of Aesthetics and Communication

The position is attached to the English Degree Programme and involves research, teaching and supervision duties in English Literature and Media.

The position as assistant professor is a three-year fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of re-appointment to the tenured position of associate professor (lektor), and begins on 1 February 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position

A position as assistant professor includes tasks in all of Aarhus University´s core activities in the areas of research, teaching, and knowledge exchange.

Research

Key criteria of the assessment will be the quality of the research output, which is expected to meet international standards, and successful teaching experience at university level within the area of English-language literature and media.

We are looking for a dedicated candidate who

1) has contributed with research in twentieth- or twenty-first-century British, American, or other English-language literature and media, and

2) is qualified for teaching courses at BA and MA levels in both English-language literatures and US and UK media as well as seminars in subjects related to his or her area of research.

In addition, it will be considered an advantage if an applicant

1) can demonstrate research publications which foreground interconnections between literature and television, cinema, or digital media and

2) has experience with developing new courses and teaching strategies.

Education

As well as teaching courses in English-language literature and media to both English students and students from other programmes within the Department of Aesthetics and Communication and the Faculty of Arts, the position includes supervision at all levels.

Knowledge exchange

The appointee is expected to be share knowledge with various sectors of society outside of the university and be active in the general public debate in areas related to the position.

All teaching at the English programme is in English. However, if applicants are appointed who are not already speakers of Danish, it is a requirement that they acquire sufficient Danish within two years of commencing the appointment to participate fully in the activities of the Department of Aesthetics and Communication.

The English Degree Programme at the Department of Aesthetics and Culture

The English Degree Programme is part of the Department of Aesthetics and Communication, and it currently employs 14 full-time academic staff, a number of part-time lecturers, and a growing community of PhD students. A highly internationally oriented staff pursues a diversity of research interests characterized by research disciplinesliterature, linguistics, and history, society and cultureas well as geographical areas of focus, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, and Canada. The degree programme is one of the largest in the Faculty of the Arts and as such hosts a large and vibrant student body. Students have their own online magazine, The Dolphin, as well as the English Lecture Society, which hosts guest lecturers each semester. The degree programme also hosts three centres: the American Studies Center Aarhus (ASCA), the Canadian Studies Centre, and the Centre for Irish Studies.

The Department of Aesthetics and Communication hosts a large variety of disciplines including Foreign Languages, Semiotics, Linguistics and Aesthetic Information and Media Studies. With its wide scope of disciplines the department not only provides good opportunities for monodisciplinary research. It also opens for a large number of inter-disciplinary possibilities. The department is the organizational framework for about 180 academic staff, 60 PhD students and around 5000 MA and BA students. For the sake of establishing a good research environment it is expected that the person appointed will be present at the Department on a normal daily basis.

Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts is one of four main academic areas at Aarhus University.

The faculty contributes to Aarhus Universitys research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange activities.

With its 800 academic staff members, 300 PhD students, 13,000 BA and MA students, and 2,500 students following continuing/further education programmes, the faculty constitutes a strong and diverse research and teaching environment.

The Faculty of Arts consists of the Department of Aesthetics and Communication, the Department of Culture and Society, the Department of Education, the Centre for Teaching Development and Digital Media, and the AU Centre for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. We are seeking an outstanding researcher who will play a pivotal leadership role in cultivating interdisciplinary research in the areas of literature, media, philosophy, art history and the sciences, and stimulate investigations of innovative forms of poetic production and new ways of experiencing texts.

Georgia Tech's School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC), which provides diverse humanistic perspectives on a technological world, is seeking to fill one Digital Media tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in fall 2014. The program is a pioneering unit in its field and offers one of the first Ph.D. programs in digital media worldwide. It provides a studio-intensive curriculum that integrates theory and practice taught by a multidisciplinary faculty.

We seek practitioner / theorists who combine technical expertise with a strong grounding in the arts and humanities. Candidates should be prepared to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level in LMC's Computational Media and Digital Media programs. A Ph.D. (or MFA with a substantial research focus) in an appropriate field is required (e.g. digital media / arts, human centered computing, computer science, education, or design), as is computational proficiency and a demonstrated capacity for significant original research/creative work. Potential to secure external research funding is strongly desirable.

The Digital Media program in LMC covers three core areas and candidates should demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following fields. A strong preference will be given to candidates in the first area, but applications in all areas will receive full consideration:

  • Knowledge and Creativity: Investigates the role of digital media technologies in creative practices, learning, and the production of knowledge. Potential areas of focus include: creativity support tools, informational visualization, innovative interface design, AI-based art, design cognition, games for learning, new models of media-based learning, or computational tools for scientific discovery.
  • Civic and Public Media: Examines the ways in which interaction design and digital media construct and support civic life. Potential areas of focus include: the use of information design for public argument, participatory and co-design methods, and new modes of public engagement with technology.
  • Arts and Entertainment: Explores how digital media technologies can enhance, expand, and reconfigure arts and entertainment. Potential areas of focus include: digital performance, games, interactive narrative, and information visualization.

The Department of History at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) seeks a tenure-track assistant or associate professor in Digital Humanities, to begin August 1, 2014.  We are looking for a scholar with a strong academic background in historical research.  Period and area of specialization are open.  Ph.D. required by August 1, 2014.

The successful candidate's research should integrate the theoretical perspectives and digital tools of the evolving field of digital humanities and demonstrate the potential to produce significant scholarship. While technical skills, such as programming or expertise in database design would be beneficial, we are looking for candidates who have a firm understanding of the critical application of digital tools, the desire to continuously develop their technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate with specialists across the disciplines in order to build digital humanities capacity on campus. The IUPUI campus as well as Indiana University offer significant research support opportunities for digital scholarship within and across disciplines.

Teaching responsibilities include history survey courses and upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in digital humanities and the candidate's fields of expertise.  We seek a candidate interested in working with graduate students, the majority of which are in our nationally recognized MA Program in Public History.

The successful candidate will provide leadership for a digital media curriculum that emphasizes exceptional writing. The position will include advising the student newspaper, The Beacon, and its related website, as well as coursework in general education, including composition. The position requires a demonstrated commitment to excellent teaching and working with students in electronic and face to face modalities. The successful candidate can expect to help develop new approaches to media and digital journalism for our curriculum, help build online communities, and engender community participation.

The ideal candidate will have both academic and practical background and be prepared to offer courses in at least two of the following areas: newswriting, scriptwriting, or magazine writing. Readiness to teach courses in the literature of journalism is desirable.

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in on-line journalism, digital technologies, social media, and visual culture; experience in communication design for multiple platforms; and who are conversant with cultural studies methods for both instruction and scholarship.

The position is contingent on final budgetary approval.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. or M.F.A. (60 credit hours) in an appropriate field. Candidates who are ABD with a firm date of completion will be considered.

Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years of successful teaching experience at the college level, professional experience in journalism including digital journalism, demonstrated interest in ongoing professional development, and experience with instructional technology.

This is a ten-month, tenure-track faculty position with teaching and administrative responsibilities.  The founding Director will help shape the vision for the Rutgers-Camden Center for digital Studies consistent with the academic mission of the College of Arts and Sciences.  The director will coordinate an interdisciplinary academic program in Digital Studies for undergraduate and graduate students.  Additional administrative responsibilities include assisting with fundraising, as well as oversight for budgeting, planning, staffing and daily operations for the Center.

The CLIR/DLF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Curation for Early Modern Studies is an expansion of the CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Academic Libraries. These five, fully-funded fellowships will provide recent Ph.D.s with professional development, education, and training opportunities in data curation for Early Modern Studies. Through this program, CLIR seeks to raise awareness and build capacity for sound data management practice throughout the academy.

Each fellowship is two year appointment, with a commensurate salary, plus benefits, and a yearly travel and research stipend.

Who May Apply: Recent Ph.D.s from any discipline with relevant expertise in Early Modern Studies are encouraged to apply, so long as they meet the eligibility criteria for the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program . Folger Shakespeare Library
  • The Folger Shakespeare Library seeks to appoint a postdoctoral CLIR-Folger Digital Communities Fellow, for a period of two years, beginning fall 2014. The CLIR-Folger Fellow will join a community of 50 long- and short-term residential fellows at the Folger, fully participating in the daily exchange of ideas, sources, and research strategies. Fellowship will come with opportunities to present on work-in-progress to the Folger’s scholarly community. The fellow will also work closely with colleagues at the Folger with a range of professional backgrounds, from subject and materials specialities to project administration and tool-building. The fellow will enjoy exposure to a wide variety of career paths, and training opportunities will be provided. The fellow will be integrated into the work and organizational culture of the Folger through ongoing involvement in staff meetings related to digital access and preservation. A percentage of time will be allowed (up to 25%) for the fellow to develop or extend his or her own project, ideally one that contributes to Folger data curation initiatives.

  • Collaborate with Folger Digital Texts and other Folger-based textual encoding projects’ staff to develop a workshop curriculum for college teaching applications. :*Pilot workshop is planned for fall 2015.

  • The CLIR postdoctoral fellow’s research will focus on the challenges for data curation posed by the different types of readers’ annotations on early modern books. To date the guiding principle in digitizing early modern texts has been to provide “clean” copy. But where does this leave the common phenomenon of those books that readers have annotated, sometimes in painstaking detail? The Clark owns books so heavily annotated that they straddle the divide between published book and manuscript. As a consequence, our received histories of the transition between manuscript and print no long appear adequate. The annotations in many Clark volumes contain a trove of information on their circulation and consumption. How might metadata address the methodological and conceptual challenges presented by these objects, recording the level and type of annotation? How might recent work in the field of material studies/history of the book impact curatorial decisions? If, as seems likely for these texts, the study of annotation shifts the focus of understanding early modern volumes from authors to readers, how might this influence our description and cataloguing of the volumes?

  • The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seek an innovative and energetic CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Curation for Early Modern Studies to play an integral role in the working life of the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at Penn’s Van Pelt Library, including overseeing the transition of the Penn Provenance Project (PPP) and its data to a new platform.
  • Penn Provenance Project (PPP): Through its faculty and library resources, the University of Pennsylvania has long been at the forefront of book history and material text research, especially in the early modern era. Building on this strength, the Kislak Center is actively becoming a node for provenance history research. This research is essential for understanding how texts moved through the early modern world, what kinds of books collectors and libraries of the period valued, and the nature of print and manuscript cultural production. The fellow will play a key role in developing this field through his or her research and involvement in working with book historical data at the Kislak Center through the Penn Provenance Project.
  • Penn Provenance Project Fellow responsibilities:

The Neukom Institute for Computational Science at Dartmouth College is pleased to announce the 2014 Neukom Fellows competition. Neukom Fellows are interdisciplinary positions for recent Ph.D.s, DMAs, or MFAs whose research interests or practice cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries, but has some computational component, whether it be a framing concept for intellectual exploration or an explicit component of the work that is pursued. The successful candidate should have a history of collaborative work across disciplines, but still show good evidence of independence and initiative. The Fellowships are two- to three-year appointments, with the third year extension considered upon request after a review early in the second year. Neukom Fellows will be mentored by faculty in two departments at Dartmouth College, take up residence in one department, and will teach one seminar course each year on a subject of their interest. Beyond that there are no additional duties. Neukom Fellow stipends are $60,000 for 2014-2015. Additional funds are available for equipment, travel, and research materials.

Responsibilities of the Fellow will include:

The Postdoctoral Fellow is a key position in a new initiative in the Digital Liberal Arts at Middlebury College. We are looking for a creative and technically skilled person to promote the use of digital technologies and resources for humanities research, teaching, and intellectual engagement. This will take the form of four connected activities: building awareness, building capacity, project support, and connecting with the larger community of Digital Humanities scholarship. The ideal candidate will have working familiarity with a variety of digital methods, extensive experience with collaborative digital scholarship, a proven record of teaching at the college or university level, and broad awareness of issues at the intersection of digital scholarship and pedagogy.  The Fellow will work closely with a team of faculty, library staff, and research and curricular technologists to help develop and support the College’s vision for incorporating digital technologies in innovative, collaborative research. While the focus of the DLA initiative is to promote collaborative projects in the humanities, the Postdoctoral Fellow will also be involved in exploring the potential for cross-fertilization across the boundaries of the humanities, social sciences, and physical and natural sciences. We particularly seek candidates with expertise in textual technologies such as text mining, text encoding, topic modelling, digital indexing, and digital publication.

Qualifications: The Postdoctoral Fellow will be in residence in the Davis Family Library, under the supervision of the faculty Director of the DLA Lab, Anne Kelly Knowles. The Fellow’s primary responsibilities will include organizing and participating in digital training workshops, consulting on faculty projects, helping develop a speakers program, and following and reporting on trends in the Digital Humanities. In recognition of the importance of creative scholarship for this position, 30 percent of the Fellow’s time will be allocated to their own research, writing, giving presentations, and related scholarly activities.

The Alabama Digital Humanities Center (ADHC) is a vibrant and dynamic community of over 80 faculty and staff members and a collaborative workspace created and maintained by the University Libraries. The post-doctoral fellow will hold a joint appointment in the University Libraries and the English Department in the College of Arts & Sciences. The fellowship offers the successful candidate support for independent research combined with the opportunity to play a leadership role in the expansion of the digital humanities community at the University of Alabama.

The successful candidate will begin the fellowship in the Fall 2013, with a 24-month appointment through the end of the 2014-15 academic year. The fellow will conduct his or her own research and work in conjunction with the ADHC staff to promote and develop the digital humanities community on campus. The fellow will deliver presentations on his or her research and on digital humanities topics more generally to University of Alabama faculty and will provide leadership in identifying, understanding, and evaluating emerging technologies based on their pedagogical, presentation, and research uses.

The committee welcomes all applicants with an active research agenda in English or a related discipline. The successful applicant will have attained a Ph.D. by December 2013 and will bring an active research project whose strong digital component could serve as a model for other faculty at the University of Alabama. The applicant should demonstrate an ability to engage broadly with digital humanities as an interdisciplinary community of scholars.

University of Central Florida (FL) - Visiting Assistant Professor (Technical Communication & Emerging Technologies)[]

The Department of English is seeking to hire a visiting assistant professor primarily in our Technical Communication M.A. program with an allied position in the Texts and Technology Ph.D. program. This 9-month, non-tenure earning position may be renewable annually for up to four years. The position entails a 3/3 teaching load. This position is anticipated to begin in August 2014, pending the availability of funding.

Position Minimum Qualifications: The position requires a Ph.D. in English or a related field from an accredited institution. Candidates must have a strong scholarly potential, solid experience in teaching technical communication or a similar discipline, and a research focus on current trends and emerging technologies. Candidates must also have the ability to teach and conduct research in one or more of the following areas: technical communication, data visualization, usability studies, information architecture, digital humanities, or technical illustration.

Preferences: A theorist-practitioner comfortable working with and teaching in both theory and applied technology.

Special Conditions: Applicants who have previously served four years as visiting faculty at UCF are not eligible.

The School of Library and Information Studies, the iSchool at UW-Madison, invites applications for a two year Visiting Assistant Professor position. SLIS will provide research mentorship and support to further the career development of the VAP. The position would require teaching 2 courses per semester in SLIS’s information technology curriculum including courses such as database design, UX /HCI, information architecture or organization of information. Some courses will be online. The VAP will be expected to fully participate in the intellectual life of the School contributing expertise in target research areas such as: information retrieval and search/access, data mining, information visualization, or technological aspects of archives and electronic records. The VAP will also participate in student advising and SLIS governance.
