Brigham Young University: Assistant Professor, Musicology

Courses include but are not limited to: Music Literature from the Middle Ages through 1750, graduate seminars in Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music. Hebrew Union College: Assistant Professor of Jewish Musicology

• Hebrew Union College—Jewish Institute of Religion, Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music announces the opening of a tenure track position as Assistant Professor of Jewish Musicology, to begin July 1, 2022. We seek candidates with a completed Ph.D. with expertise in Jewish musicology and ethnomusicology, as well as a grounding in Jewish liturgical music and text. The position encompasses instructional responsibilities in Jewish music, as well as in specific areas of cantorial development. This scholar and pedagogue will be part of a multi-disciplinary, integrative faculty team devoted to the education and training of cantors.
• The assistant professor will oversee Judaic musicological studies within the DFSSM, contribute to the study of Jewish music within HUC-JIR,and represent the College-Institute through their own research in the larger world of Jewish musicology and ethnomusicology. Academic duties will include full-time instruction in the cantorial school; serving as principal architect of the research component of the cantorial curriculum and lead faculty member in the collaborative process of DFSSM curricular development; consultant in areas of Jewish music studies for the broader College-Institute in partnership with the cantorial Program Director; individual academic advisor and capstone project advisor; and participation in the various academic, liturgical, musical, and deliberative activities of the DFSSM and the College-Institute. The assistant professor will become part of an integrative learning environment and community of practice in which holistic student growth—spiritual, vocational, and intellectual—is a priority.

University of Notre Dame: Associate/Full Professor, Sacred Music Program Director, Musicology

• The University of Notre Dame seeks a music historian, appointable at the level of associate or full professor, with tenure, who will direct Notre Dame's Graduate Program in Sacred Music. The person appointed to this position will have a distinguished record as a scholar, a gift for and interest in teaching graduate students, and successful experience in or a strong aptitude for administrative work and collaboration within the arts. Knowledge of the musical and liturgical traditions of some period within the history of the Roman Catholic Church, and/or an understanding of contemporary issues regarding music and liturgy within the Church is essential.
• Affiliated faculty, most of whom are also appointed in the departments of Music and/or of Theology, work with the Director of SMND to design the curriculum, manage the choral ensembles, and maintain musical instruments and facilities. The Director of SMND shares the responsibility with the Chair of the Department of Music for O'Neill Hall of Music and Sacred Music (opened in 2018), including its concert venues, classrooms, and other spaces. O'Neill Hall also houses a full-service music library. The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, liaises with the development officer within the College, manages the SMND budget, and is a member of both the Dean's Committee of Deans, Chairs, and Directors, and of the Provost's Committee for Departments Chairs/School Liaisons/Program Directors.
• The Director works in close partnership with the Chair of the Department of Music and with the professional staff of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart to sustain the vibrant musical life now flourishing at the University of Notre Dame. The Director also meets regularly with the Director of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center to advance common goals. DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (opened in 2004) (https://performingarts.nd.edu) has six acoustically outstanding performing spaces, including the Reyes Organ and Choral Hall, and presents top-ranked international and national performers. O'Neill Hall and the DPAC form the core of an emerging “arts corridor” on campus.

Chinese University of Hong Kong: Assistant Professor in Historical Musicology

• The Department of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Historical Musicology.
• Applicants should have: (i) a PhD degree in a relevant field; (ii) a primary research area in historical musicology (18th – 20th century) with a secondary specialty in pedagogy and global musicology; (iii) a record of outstanding publications and successful grant applications, or clear potential thereof.
• The appointee is expected to strengthen and complement the Department’s research activities and to actively apply for external competitive grants. Duties include (a) conducting top-tier independent and joint research; (b) teaching two courses per semester at the undergraduate/postgraduate level; (c) supervising students’ projects and theses; and (d) assisting in administrative duties.

Georg-August-Universität Göttingen: Research Assistant, “Sound Knowledge: Alternative Epistemologies of Music in the Western Pacific Island World”

• The Department of Musicology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is looking to fill the position of doctoral or postdoctoral Research Assistant (all genders welcome) within the European Research Council project “Sound Knowledge. Alternative Epistemologies of Music in the Western Pacific Island World” (see https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/617406.html). This position is for work on sound knowledge and social alienation/mental health in the Marshall Islands. The position is embedded within the wider research project.
• Commencement: 1 January 2022 or soon after.
• Qualifications: Successful candidates will have an excellent academic track record with a degree in ethnomusicology or music studies more broadly, as well as expertise in Pacific Island Studies. We expect a strong interest in the intersections between music and postcoloniality, a high level of interest in theoretical and methodological reflection and willingness to both contribute to the wider research project and implement fieldwork.
• The regular working hours will be 31.84 hours/week (80%). Salary: Pay grade 13 TV-L. The contract will be initially for two years with a fifteenth-month extension subject to a performance review.
• The successful candidate will hold a highly qualified M.A. degree in Musicology and have focused on research in Cultural Musicology or Ethnomusicology. Hebrew University of Jerusalem: Tenure-Track Position (open rank), Ethnomusicology and Popular Music

• The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites applications for a tenure-track position (open rank) in the Department of Musicology, in ethnomusicology (with a preferred specialization in Jewish, Arab, and Mediterranean musics) and welcomes applications from candidates who specialize in popular music (rock, pop, film music, and musicals) in both its global and Israeli contexts.
• The position is open to all candidates with a Ph.D. degree.
• Job requirements: Responsibilities include the teaching of required and elective courses in the candidate’s field(s) of specialization (at the B.A. and M.A. degree levels). • Sound Studies is a relatively young field of research, which is also rapidly transformed by technological development and processes related to globalization. Leuphana University of Lüneburg is one of the few German-speaking universities that offers a research focus in Sound Studies at a faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
• You intend to actively participate in shaping the field of sound studies and contribute to the profile of Humanities and Social Sciences in Lüneburg, which is characterized by a critical approach to contemporary culture. You are an expert in the analysis of sonic artifacts and their historical development. Your work focuses on the further development of Sound Studies in the context of Humanities by exploring and establishing innovative and internationally emerging topics and issues.
• While the field of Sound Studies was initially and primarily dedicated to phenomena such as soundscapes, sound art, or experimental electronic music, it has since broadened to include studies on urban sounds, acoustic warfare, transculturality, noise studies, or noise pollution. In addition to a key qualification in Sound Studies, a further research focus in one of the more recent fields is an essential component of the qualification for this junior professorship.
• Through the professorship you are involved in the „audioLab“, a studio for electronic music and post-production, which can be used for teaching and research purposes as well as by students and regional initiatives. Due to your Humanities orientation, you would like to become engaged in the scholarly initiatives of Leuphana University („Digital Cultures“ and „Cultures of Critique“). You will find particular affinities with the professorships of Media Aesthetics and Media Technology, Media Culture and Media Philosophy, Media Theory and Media History, Contemporary Art, Cultural Theory, Cultural History of Knowledge, Art - Theory - Criticism, and Cultural Mediation and Cultural Organization.
• You have a background in Sound Studies, Media Studies, Musicology, or Popular Music Studies, significant teaching experience, and have gained experience in research projects as well as in the acquisition of external funding. Your work shows a broad expertise in different methodological approaches of Sound Studies and in the history of sonic artifacts as well as a high potential for innovation with regard to the further development of Sound Studies. You publish in relevant journals and publishing houses on a national and international level. You have excellent skills in the English language and are able to teach courses in English. If you do not have German language skills, you are willing to acquire them within a reasonable time frame.
• In organizational terms, the professorship is assigned to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, Institute for Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media (ICAM). You will be teaching "Music and Auditory Culture“ (Major) and "Popular Music Studies“ (Minor) in the Bachelor's program and "Media and Digital Cultures“ in the Master's program, but also in the electives of the other cultural studies Master's programs (Critique of the Present: Arts, Theory, History; Culture and Organization; Theory and History of Modernity). In addition, you are involved in cross-faculty programs (Cultural Studies Core) and in cross-university programs (General Studies). It is further required that you will take part in the academic self-administration.
• The requirements for employment (paygrade W1) are based on § 30 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG), and include: a university degree in musicology, sound studies, popular music studies or a comparable degree in cultural and media studies; pedagogical and didactical competence based on experience in using innovative teaching methods; the particular ability to conduct in-depth independent scientific work, which is usually documented by an outstanding dissertation corresponding to the profile of the professorship.

Open University: Staff Tutor in Music (0.6 FTE) x2

• The role of Staff Tutor is a key academic role. Duties include the management of our student-facing Associate Lecturers, contributing to the presentation of modules and qualifications in Music as well as to our inter-disciplinary Level One modules in Arts and Humanities, and supporting students within the School of Arts and Humanities. The role includes a minimum of 22 days p.a. (pro-rata) for research & scholarship.

• Skills and experience: You will need: A strong academic background in Music or a cognate area, ideally at least a PhD. Experience in teaching, and the management of teaching and student support. • RITMO is a Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway. This interdisciplinary centre focuses on rhythm as a structuring mechanism for the temporal dimensions of human life. Methods from musicology, psychology, neuroscience, and informatics are combined to study rhythm as a fundamental property that shapes and underpins human cognition, behaviour and cultural expressions.
• All RITMO researchers are co-located and work in a unique interdisciplinary constellation, with world-leading competence in musicology, psychology and informatics. It is expected that all members of the centre contribute to the general activities and collaborations within RITMO. The researchers have access to state-of-the-art facilities in sound/video recording, motion capture, eye tracking, physiological measurements, various types of brain imaging (EEG, fMRI), and rapid prototyping and robotics laboratories.
• The postdoctoral fellow will do research into rhythm at the micro level of groove-based music. The research should address timing in relation to one or more of the following topics: acoustic features, tempo, and body motion.

• The STACCATO project (ANR-19-CE38-0008-05, Vibrotactile mediation for shared musical practice) is an interdisciplinary project falling within the themes of vibrotactile perception and digital and electroacoustic tools allowing its implementation. More precisely, the objectives of the project are 1) to explore the vibrotactile modality as sensory feedback for the perception of the sound event and the gestural control of instrumental interfaces in musical practice with people having or not sensory impairment, 2) to develop a system of vibrotactile signs and analyze its use in context for communication between musicians in collective musical playing situations, 3) to analyze in a comparative manner the functions of the vibrotactile modality for sensory feedback and for codified communication. The originality of the project lies in its aim to combine a technological approach (acoustics, engineering) and a psychological approach to the sensory experience. Another is to bring together teams with complementary skills and expertise in psychology, mechanics and acoustics, music, electroacoustics, digital technologies, signal processing, linguistics and speech analysis (LAM, Lutheries-Acoustique-Musique, UMR 7190, Institut d'Alembert, Sorbonne Université ; Institut de Recherche en Musicologie, IReMus, UMR 3226, Sorbonne Université ; Unité Transversale de Recherche Psychogenèse et Psychopathologie, UTRPP, UR 4403, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord ; ISEN d'Électronique, de Microélectronique et de Nanotechnologie, IEMN, UMR 8520 Lille ; Praxiling, UMR 5267, Université Montpellier 3).
• This research will be carried out with musicians and non-musicians (with and without sensory impairment). It consists of carrying out semi-structured individual interviews before and after two sessions of individual experimentation with the vibrotactile object. In parallel, two collective experiments with the vibrotactile object will be organized.

• Qualifications: Academic credentials: graduate degree in the field of musicology, museum studies, ethnomusicology, arts administration, or business required. At least five years of experience in museum administration, music administration, or other non-profit organization administration preferred. Experience with non-profit fundraising for operations and capital, including private-donor gifts, grant-writing, and membership development giving at a scale appropriate to this museum is preferred. College teaching and museum-curation experience are desirable. Knowledge of and passion for music history and for rare and historical musical instruments desirable. People skills to engage the Board, membership, donors, and the public, and to serve as the face of the Museum desirable.
• This position is a full-time, twelve month administrative job with the salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. USD offers a benefits package and the NMM and USD offer travel budget to attend conferences and maintain national/international contacts. The person in this position reports to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts.

• A few comments from 5120j:

• 1. My rule of thumb for deciding which jobs to post is: "COULD an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" Not the more narrow question "WILL an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" So, this means I will post more general "humanities" jobs, and positions (mostly at small schools) looking for someone to teach music history/appreciation but also direct an ensemble/teach applied lessons/etc. (If the most important part of the job seems to be the ensemble directing/applied lessons and music history/appreciation is an add-on, I don't post it.)
• 2. I post almost the entire text of the job ad (except in the case of part-time/adjunct jobs) so that if any changes are made later, they can be noticed and noted. The ads also usually disappear from the institution's website after the application deadline has passed, so it's helpful to preserve them here. And it's very instructive to see how the winning candidate did and didn't fit the job as it was advertised. I do usually excise the description of the hiring school/department/facilities and the EOE boilerplate, but I leave the rest of it as-is. Removing anything more feels like editorializing on my part.
