  • A Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships (SKO 1352) in Microrhythm is available at RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion at the University of Oslo.
  • RITMO is a Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway. This interdisciplinary centre focuses on rhythm as a structuring mechanism for the temporal dimensions of human life. Methods from musicology, psychology, neuroscience, and informatics are combined to study rhythm as a fundamental property that shapes and underpins human cognition, behaviour and cultural expressions.
  • All RITMO researchers are co-located and work in a unique interdisciplinary constellation, with world-leading competence in musicology, psychology and informatics. It is expected that all members of the centre contribute to the general activities and collaborations within RITMO. The researchers have access to state-of-the-art facilities in sound/video recording, motion capture, eye tracking, physiological measurements, various types of brain imaging (EEG, fMRI), and rapid prototyping and robotics laboratories.
  • The postdoctoral fellow will do research into rhythm at the micro level of groove-based music. The research should address timing in relation to one or more of the following topics: acoustic features, tempo, and body motion.
  • The research will ideally draw on perspectives from one or more of the following traditions: musicology, music cognition, and phenomenology. All applications must include a research outline. The postdoctoral fellow will be affiliated with the Structure and time cluster at RITMO, as well as the TIME-project.

University Paul Valéry Montpellier 3/CNRS: Postdoc – Vibrotactile mediation for shared musical practice (ANR Staccato)

  • The STACCATO project (ANR-19-CE38-0008-05, Vibrotactile mediation for shared musical practice) is an interdisciplinary project falling within the themes of vibrotactile perception and digital and electroacoustic tools allowing its implementation. More precisely, the objectives of the project are 1) to explore the vibrotactile modality as sensory feedback for the perception of the sound event and the gestural control of instrumental interfaces in musical practice with people having or not sensory impairment, 2) to develop a system of vibrotactile signs and analyze its use in context for communication between musicians in collective musical playing situations, 3) to analyze in a comparative manner the functions of the vibrotactile modality for sensory feedback and for codified communication. The originality of the project lies in its aim to combine a technological approach (acoustics, engineering) and a psychological approach to the sensory experience. Another is to bring together teams with complementary skills and expertise in psychology, mechanics and acoustics, music, electroacoustics, digital technologies, signal processing, linguistics and speech analysis (LAM, Lutheries-Acoustique-Musique, UMR 7190, Institut d'Alembert, Sorbonne Université ; Institut de Recherche en Musicologie, IReMus, UMR 3226, Sorbonne Université ; Unité Transversale de Recherche Psychogenèse et Psychopathologie, UTRPP, UR 4403, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord ; ISEN d'Électronique, de Microélectronique et de Nanotechnologie, IEMN, UMR 8520 Lille ; Praxiling, UMR 5267, Université Montpellier 3).
  • This research will be carried out with musicians and non-musicians (with and without sensory impairment). It consists of carrying out semi-structured individual interviews before and after two sessions of individual experimentation with the vibrotactile object. In parallel, two collective experiments with the vibrotactile object will be organized.
  • The mission of the recruited person will consist of: (1) helping to develop the protocol for collective experiments, (2) passing this protocol on to the participants and collecting the audio and video data during the experiment, (3) transcribe the data collected during the completion of this protocol using dedicated software (Praat, Clan, Elan), (4) annotate this data according to the different categories of analysis that will have been determined within the framework of the Staccato project, 5) analyze these data at the quantitative and qualitative levels and 6) disseminate and publish the results of these analyzes in collaboration with the other members of the ANR STACCATO.

  • 1. My rule of thumb for deciding which jobs to post is: "COULD an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" Not the more narrow question "WILL an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" So, this means I will post more general "humanities" jobs, and positions (mostly at small schools) looking for someone to teach music history/appreciation but also direct an ensemble/teach applied lessons/etc. (If the most important part of the job seems to be the ensemble directing/applied lessons and music history/appreciation is an add-on, I don't post it.)
  • 2. I post almost the entire text of the job ad (except in the case of part-time/adjunct jobs) so that if any changes are made later, they can be noticed and noted.
