Jobs for 2021

Note: in keeping with prior practice, "Jobs for 2021" shall be interpreted as covering jobs that fall into the 2020-2021 application cycle for jobs starting during the North American / UK 2021-2022 Academic Year. Although exact start times will vary, this will generally include any positions starting between January 2021 and April 2022, and can include such things as 1-term visiting professorships, temporary lecturer opportunities, etc. Listings accidentally placed here but belonging to a preceding or following academic year will be moved appropriately.

In keeping with discussion on previous year's wikis, this listing welcomes postings about jobs from institutions around the world (however, we only post international jobs which are advertised in English), including but not limited to: full-time tenure track faculty, full-time non-tenure track faculty, full-time community college faculty, and part-time/adjunct faculty appointments. (We do not currently post listings for part-time adjunct pools, only for specific part-time/adjunct positions.)

Tenure-track Faculty Positions, Ethnomusicology and/or Musicology

  • For 2020-21, we are going back to combining all tenure-track jobs together, since the number of "pure" ethnomusicology or "pure" musicology jobs continues to dwindle. If anyone wants to argue for splitting them like it was last year, please state your case now (preferably in General Discussion) since it'll be way harder to reorganize once there are more jobs up.

  • You will receive email confirmation once you have successfully completed the application process.
  • 12/3 (1) I submitted a day early and received a confirmation email, but no links to send to my references. Anyone else in that boat, or did I miss a step?
    • 12/3 (2) my understanding is that the search committee will contact your five references you are asked to fill out on the online application form.
    • 12/3 (3) Yesterday I received what I assumed was an automated email requesting that I login to their portal and request letters from my five references. The process involved logging into their portal and clicking "request letter" five times, once for each reference that I had entered earlier in the process.
    • 12/3 (1) Okay, I did not receive that (presumably second) automated email. My references on the site still say "not sent" and the help desk basically gave me the FAQ answer. Oh well. Perhaps it will still come.
    • 12/3 (3) Yes, I had received a first email (weeks ago when I applied) acknowledging receipt of my application and a second the day after applications closed. I can't imagine they had gone through and hand selected a second round the day after the applications were due. I had never seen this quirk before in which I had to request letters (rather, click "request" on each recommender) myself following the application deadline. Typically this step is automated by HR.
    • 12/3 (4) I wonder how many people received this second email about logging in to request letters? I also submitted the day before the deadline and received confirmation of receipt but haven't received this request.
    • 12/3 (5) Submitted a few days before the deadline, but haven't received the second email about reference letters either. x2
    • 12/7 received the second email requesting reference letters through the application portal. x2
    • 12/7: request for Zoom interview. x2

  • The complete Application Package must be submitted by 11:59 PM (ET) on 10/01/2020.
  • (7/21/20) Not sure why this is included in Tenure-Track jobs. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education listing, this is a non-tenure-track position working on 3-year renewable contracts.
  • 7/23 Thanks! All I saw on the USAJOBS ad (which, admittedly, I did not read word-for-word) was "Appointment type: Permanent." Moving to non-tenure-track. - 5120j
  • Also posted at Music Theory/Composition 2020-21
  • 10/21 This was one of the most complex applications I've done as they wanted so much in the cover letter and/or accompanying documents.  Did I read correctly that the application goes through the USA Jobs site and if everything is in order, goes on to the AFA?  My portal still reads "submitted for processing."  Is that what others applicants are seeing?
  • 10/21 Mine is ever so slightly different: "Received" for processing. No clue if that distinction is significant in any way. I've applied for a couple other USA gov jobs before (NEH, NEA) and the application portal and bevy of required info is identical.
  • 10/21 -- Mine also says "received for processing."
  • 10/22 -- Application referred to hiring manager. No clue what this means.
  • 10/22 -- Ditto. They have a FAQ on the USAJobs page explaining each application status: https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/how-to/application/status/#what-does-each-application-status-mean/. Referred reads, "Your application is among the best qualified and is referred to the next step in the selection process." So I'm assuming something akin to a semi finalist group
  • 10/22 -- Mine too, just saw the 'referred to next step' notice. My understanding is that the initial review is just to weed out candidates who don't meet the basic requested qualifications or who did not follow the instructions (eg one does not get forwarded if one failed to write "I am an American citizen," and so forth). Those who meet the requirements and who followed the instructions correctly are forwarded to the next step which, if I recall, is a hiring committee at the AFA. Now the real weeding begins. I'd love to know how many of us applied for this post.
  • 12/8 - Any updates anywhere? My "referred" status has not changed since these last posts, nor have I received further contact.
  • 12/11 - Nope. I think there is an AFA general hiring committee which further weeds candidates and then sends a reduced list to the departmental committee, so my expectation was more movement on this in the spring semester.

University of Toronto, Jackman Humanities Institute: 2021-2022 Community Engaged Humanities Early Career Fellowship

  • Deadline: 30 November 2020
  • The Jackman Humanities Institute at the University of Toronto will accept applications from recent doctoral graduates for a one-year Community-Engaged Humanities Research (CEHR) Early Career Fellowship intended to foster knowledge exchange between the academy and public. The JHI CEHR Early Career Fellow will be a recent Ph.D. who is establishing a track record in their own discipline and working on a project at the intersection of the academy with one or more extra-academic, public and/or non-profit organizations (e.g., museums, galleries, Indigenous communities, archives, libraries, arts organizations, etc.). The JHI CEHR Early Career Fellow will hold a 12-month residential fellowship at the JHI where s/he will be expected to pursue their own research in their own discipline while developing their public humanities research profile. At the JHI they will pursue their own research in their own discipline, including some work relevant to the JHI’s annual theme; participate in activities with the multigenerational circle of fellows, including weekly lunch seminars and occasional workshops and lectures; and present aspects of their research that engages public and/or community interest at one or more Community-engaged Public Humanities Workshops. In addition, the JHI CEHR Early Career Fellow may participate, as appropriate, in the other “Humanities at Large” pillar activities.
  • The Jackman Humanities Institute interprets “Humanities” as a broad category, including political theory, interpretive social science, music, and the arts.
  • The Annual Theme for 2021-2022 is PLEASURE: Whether understood as light amusement or passionate pursuit, as pure enjoyment, sensual gratification, bliss or hedonism, pleasure may be the most agreeable motivator. Yet pleasure has been described as “curious and appalling,” one of modern civilization’s most deadly poisons. Through its diverse manifestations – as intellectual satisfaction and the pleasures of knowledge, across studies of media audiences, addiction, virtual sex – when, and how, has pleasure become divorced from ideology, politics, and power? Uneasiness concerning pleasure resonates readily with humanists’ tendencies to formulate our subjects of study as constellations of problems, but is there space in our discourses for unironic joy?
  • Eligibility: Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. within five years of the beginning of the fellowship (after 1 July 2016). Applicants who will complete doctoral degree requirements before 1 May 2021 are eligible, but a letter from their supervisor or Chair may be requested to confirm completion. Any award will be conditional on a successful defense. Applicants who received their Ph.D. before 1 July 2016 are ineligible. Fellowships are open to citizens of all countries. Doctoral candidates and Ph.D. recipients from the University of Toronto are eligible to apply. This position is not open to those who hold a tenure-track position.
  • Selection Criteria: We are seeking individuals whose intellectual scope moves between formal academic research and public communications. The JHI is a site for interdisciplinary humanities research conversations, and we are therefore interested in candidates who have an interest in and capacity for presentation of their research across disciplinary and institutional boundaries.  Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of commitment to the public humanities knowledge exchange, achievement as appropriate to their career stage, promise of excellence, and relevance of their proposed research project to the Annual Theme.
  • The Fellowship: The Fellowship provides funding for twelve months, with residency required for nine months (September—May). The stipend is $50,000 CAD plus benefits. Moving expenses are not provided. The JHI will provide an office, University of Toronto Library access, faculty mentoring, and administrative support.  Fellows are expected to attend weekly lunches on Thursdays from September through the first week of May. Teaching is not a component of this fellowship, but incumbents may apply for sessional positions in their home disciplines as available.
  • Procedure: You must have or create an account in the JHI website (https://humanities.utoronto.ca) to apply. You will be asked to upload the following documents in your application:
  • Letter of Application (maximum 1000 words)
  • Curriculum Vitae (formal, as for academic job applications; include public humanities work)
  • Proposal for Public Humanities Research relevant to the annual theme of Pleasure (maximum 3000 words)
  • Writing Sample (academic) – a thesis chapter or published article
  • Communications Sample (public) – an article for popular press, a blog post, podcast, interview or other media product. Please upload a .pdf format file that contains links and a brief explanation of what each sample is.
  • This application is located at: https://humanities.utoronto.ca/funding/37809
  • All documents must be in .pdf format. The size limit for your completed application is 8 mb.  If your upload documents are too large, you will see an error message; please reduce the size of your files and try again. You must complete this application in one sitting.  It is not possible to edit or revise once you have saved your application.
  • You will be asked to provide the names and email addresses of two references. Your referees will receive an automated request for their letters, which will be due on Monday 7 December 2020.  Please ask your referees to watch for our request email.
  • Deadline
  • Application materials: 30 November 2020 at midnight
  • Reference letters: 7 December 2020
  • Questions? For questions relating to the scope and expectations of this fellowship, please contact Professor Alison Keith, Director, at jhi.director@utoronto.ca

University of Oslo: Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship, BENEDICAMUS (x2)

  • Deadline: 01 October 2020
  • Two Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships in Musical and Poetic Creativity in the Western Christian Liturgy, c.1000-1500 are available at the Department of Musicology, University of Oslo.
  • The two successful candidates will pursue postdoctoral research as part of the €2m European Research Council-funded project, BENEDICAMUS: Musical and Poetic Creativity for A Unique Moment in the Western Christian Liturgy, c.1000-1500. The candidates will work as part of a team lead by Principal Investigator Catherine A. Bradley, alongside doctoral researchers, an international Advisory Board, and the performing ensemble Sequentia. The postdoctoral fellows are expected to publish both independently and in collaboration with the BENEDICAMUS team, to present research papers at workshops and international conferences, and contribute to wider public communication of the research results.
  • We seek candidates whose work intersects with at least one of the specilised areas of the BENEDICAMUS project as well as its broader themes. BENEDICAMUS pursues a transformative focus on creative practices surrounding a particular moment in the Western Christian liturgy: the exclamation Benedicamus Domino (“Let us Bless the Lord”), which sounded in song several times a day from c.1000 to 1500. BENEDICAMUS undertakes the first longue durée study of musical and poetic responses to an exceptional liturgical moment, using this innovative perspective to work productively across established historiographical and disciplinary boundaries. The project encompasses half a millennium of musical and ritual activity, hundreds of musical compositions, poetic texts, and manuscript sources. It engages with the beginnings of musical and poetic genres and techniques that were crucial in shaping practices still current today, reflecting on music’s enduringly complex relationship with spirituality, ritual, and the sacred.
  • Successful candidates may have a disciplinary background in cultural studies, history, musicology, Latin language and/or literature, liturgy, medieval studies, renaissance studies, ritual studies, or theology. Ideally, candidates would already have experience in at least two of these fields.
  • Candidates are asked to provide a Project Description, in which they outline how their research record, interests, and skills align with the BENEDICAMUS project (see detailed proposal here).
  • The Project Description should explain exactly how candidates would undertake one of the specific postdoctoral projects sketched in the BENEDICAMUS proposal. Candidates may suggest ways in which they would tailor or adapt one of these postdoctoral projects to better suit and develop their existing expertise. Alternatively, they are free to design a project that may differ in the specific methodology, reportorial focus, or disciplinary orientation of the postdoctoral projects stipulated in the BENEDICAMUS proposal, but which must still fall within the purview of and further the overall aims and outputs of either Work Package 1 or Work Package 3.
  • The successful candidates will receive a competitive salary and have access to dedicated funds for research and conference travel. They will participate actively in and assist with BENEDICAMUS’s international conferences, workshops, and publications. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to live in Oslo, to engage with wider research networks in the faculty of humanities and the department of musicology and to contribute to their development. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to better qualify researchers for future academic positions.
  • The postdoctoral fellowships are available for an appointment period of four years. The posts are available from February 1st 2021 (candidates must take up the posts before September 1st 2021).
  • Qualification requirements
  • A PhD in cultural studies, history, musicology, Latin language and/or literature, liturgy, medieval studies, renaissance studies, ritual studies, theology, or other fields that can be demonstrated to offer a solid foundation for research into Musical and Poetic Creativity in the Western Christian Liturgy, c.1000-1500
  • Doctoral dissertations must have been submitted for evaluation before the application deadline
  • Strong skills in written and oral English
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
  • Evaluation Criteria
  • Scholarly merit and relevance of research proposal for the BENEDICAMUS project
  • Knowledge and experience of the study of music, Latin poetry, liturgy, and ritual in the period c. 1000-1500
  • The candidate’s track-record and their potential to complete the proposed project within the time frame and to contribute actively to the BENEDICAMUS project
  • Good team-working and communication skills and the ability to collaborate within and across disciplines.
  • We offer
  • Salary NOK 523 200 – 605 500 per year, depending on qualifications
  • A professionally stimulating working environment
  • Attractive welfare benefits
  • Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • Candidates must submit the following attachments with the electronic application, preferably in pdf format:
  • Application Letter describing the candidate’s qualifications and motivation for the position
  • Curriculum Vitae (complete list of education, positions, teaching experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activities, including a complete list of publications)
  • Project Description (approximately 3-5 pages). The project description must include a feasible progress plan. It is expected that the applicant will complete the project during the period of appointment.
  • Diplomas, certificates, doctoral thesis and other academic works will be requested later.
  • Please note that all documents must be in English or a Scandinavian language.
  • The short-listed candidates will be invited to an interview at the University of Oslo or we will arrange for an interview on Skype.

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Musicology/Ethnomusicology 2020-21 Wiki Moderator: 5120j (5120janon@gmail.com)

  • A few comments from 5120j:
1. My rule of thumb for deciding which jobs to post is: "COULD an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" Not the more narrow question "WILL an ethno/musicologist fill this post?" So, this means I will post more general "humanities" jobs, and positions (mostly at small schools) looking for someone to teach music history/appreciation but also direct an ensemble/teach applied lessons/etc. (If the most important part of the job seems to be the ensemble directing/applied lessons and music history/appreciation is an add-on, I don't post it.)
2. I post almost the entire text of the job ad (except in the case of part-time/adjunct jobs) so that if any changes are made later, they can be noticed and noted. The ads also usually disappear from the institution's website after the application deadline has passed, so it's helpful to preserve them here. And it's very instructive to see how the winning candidate did and didn't fit the job as it was advertised. I do usually excise the description of the hiring school/department/facilities and the EOE boilerplate, but I leave the rest of it as-is. Removing anything more feels like editorializing on my part.
3. I don't have a current membership to CMS/MVL or SEM so if jobs are posted only in those locations, I won't see them. I don't think we've missed too many in the last few years though, since most jobs are advertised fairly widely.
4. My anon email is 5120janon at gmail, and I welcome comments and questions about the wiki and its moderation this year. I'm not a musicologist of any type and am not (and will not be) on the market myself, but I have a professional interest in the ethno/musicology job market and have been moderating the wiki for (ugh) going on six years.
  • Alt Ac jobs for ethno/musicologists discussion
    • 9/24 As an alternative to the VAP and/or adjunct gig market, where have you found employment? How do you market your work in music research within these fields? [I'm an ethnomusicologist and I've had some luck within the museum/heritage fields.]
  • Is the SEM annual meeting now (or has it ever been) an opportunity for finding full-time employment? Are you attending the SEM 2020 virtual conference in order to interview for a position? If you are unemployed, can you afford the expense of attending? (10/24)
    • 10/25 As someone who's presented at 5 of the last 6 SEMs and applied for ~200 jobs during the past three years, I haven't found SEM to be a useful place for networking. At least, I've never met someone at SEM who has then been on a job search committee. Most job committees are comprised of a majority of musicologists with one ethnomusicologist. So, I'm inclined to not renew membership at SEM and instead join AMS, just out of a sense that networking there might be more beneficial. Can't afford both and really wish for a dual-membership or conference situation like AMS-SMT this year. And none of my interviews have been at conferences. All of this is not to say that networking at SEM hasn't been useful at all. I've met wonderful and kind people, and I'm sure my presence at SEM has helped my candidacy w/ jobs. But the job crisis means that I can't wait 10 years to build these slow connections but need a job soon. So when I speak of usefulness re: networking, I'm thinking of the short-term job-getting approach.

Other Positions of Interest

  • As an experiment, this year I am going to post links to "alt-ac" (for lack of a better term) jobs I come across that might be of interest to the readers of this page. I will post the organization, job title, and a link to the ad only. -5120j
  • 8/10 Thank you for this category -- I think that "related jobs" might be better, as "alt-ac" has been used less, currently. Also thanks for the smaller number of categories -- easier to scroll through for updates and comments.
