The Department of English at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Contemporary British Literature, effective August 17, 2015. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. The successful candidate will teach lower and upper-level literature and writing courses and will contribute to the ongoing development of the curriculum. Expertise in contemporary or 19th-century British Literature or British Modernism and a demonstrated potential for strong scholarship and publication are required. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3-3.

The Ph.D. in English or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position requires teaching experience in contemporary British fiction and British multicultural literature, as well as substantial scholarship in at least one of these areas. The teaching load is 3/3, and responsibilities include first-year writing courses, introductory literature courses, surveys, and upper-level specialized courses.

The Department of English and Comparative Literature at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure track, in Comparative Modernisms, with a core specialization in British and Irish Literature.   • Recovering from small heart attack after seeing that this thread was edited...* No, none here either. They did say that they have a very involved provost who wants to look over all finalists personally (though tends to agree with search committee choices), so may be late January before any word.
  • Anything today or last week (1/26)? This really seemed like the kind of decent committee that would tell everyone where he/she stands when visits were announced. BUT...I have a hard time believing they've gone this late.
    • I do think at this point that no news is bad news. Once we've passed the 2-week MLA mark...
    • Ditto. FYI, there's a huge snowstorm rolling through the Northeast (not sure if it's going through Geneva, but hey), so I doubt any committees or provosts will be doing much of anything for the next ~48 hours. (And so we pour ourselves another cup of hot cocoa and we wait...)
  • For the record, I think this really sucks. Not that they may have taken a little longer to get their list in order/approved. So be it. But WHY does anyone (not just HWS--so many places this year and last for me) think it's OK just never to tell candidates who aren't brought to campus anything? It's obnoxious and rude. And easily fixed with a 2 line email. "Thanks for interviewing. We're not bringing you to campus right now." How hard is that? And it's not as if anyone will be upset if things shift a month from now and another visit invitation is extended.

    • Have courage friends! Some schools are still doing (or just starting!!) their Skype/Phone interviews with candidates who couldn't make it to Vancouver. So maybe that's the case here too.
  • Hey y'all -- I don't want to seem all sour grapes, but now that I can count myself among the "rejected (after prelim interview)," I'm curious: does anyone know someone who got a campus visit *besides* the inside candidate at HWS? (I do know for a fact that there is an inside candidate.)
  • If that is true (and I too had heard about the inside candidate but didn't know he was preferred, and I too was rejected after MLA and have not previously posted to this thread), then Hobart should have mentioned this in the ad or to the people they interviewed. Phony searches waste time and money. But maybe we are jumping the gun. I guess we will know soon.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Ph.D. in English with specialty in modern and contemporary American prose and drama, with ability to teach modern and contemporary British prose and drama. Prior college teaching experience desirable.

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with qualifications, education and experience. Writing and Later British Literature: The ideal candidate will have expertise in creative and technical writing with the ability to teach a variety of courses in Later British Literature (Restoration/18th century to contemporary literature). Averett is looking to expand the number of English majors through the growth of a writing program.

Both candidates must have a sound background in the teaching of composition to support the general education curriculum in addition to offering courses in the major. Background in one or more of the following areas-English education, technical writing, literary theory, service learning, minority writers, environment and literature, and women's and gender studies-would be a plus. The ideal candidates will teach general education, lower level and upper level major courses, and will be willing to teach in both face to face and online modalities. Faculty also participate in ongoing multidisciplinary curriculum development and assessment, engage in academic scholarship, and serve on appropriate university committees.

Qualifications: Candidates should have appropriate graduate education in the fields listed above, and priority will be given to those with a completed doctorate by the time of appointment. Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level is preferred.
