The Department of Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2013-14 academic year, with the possibility of a one-year renewal. We are seeking a scholar of modern British literature (1800 to 1945) with wide-ranging research interests in nineteenth- and/or twentieth-century literature, preferably with competence in at least one additional language literature that is relevant to the field. Evidence of scholarly activity, such as publications, is required. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests may include: Victorian studies, modernism, 19th- and 20th-century English, continental, and/or non-European literatures, transatlantic studies, postcolonial studies, studies in material and digital cultures, and gender, race, and sexuality studies. We have particular needs in fiction, but will consider candidates who work in other genres or across genres. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue research, to have clearly demonstrated university teaching skills at the undergraduate level, and to be able to teach large lecture courses as well as smaller classes. The applicant must be able to work with students and faculty from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their writing, research, teaching, and/or service. This position carries a teaching workload of four scheduled courses over three quarters with an expectation that the selected candidate will pursue an active program of research and writing and will perform significant departmental service.
RANK: Visiting Assistant Professor
SALARY: $54,800 – $61,300, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of English at Flagler College invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2013 with a specialization in Modernism and a secondary interest in Post-Colonial and other world literatures. The teaching load is four classes per semester divided between general education courses and upper-level major courses. Other responsibilities include committee service, student advising and contributing to the first year program.
Requirements include a completed Ph.D. (or a documented completion date for ABDs prior to appointment), a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, and evidence of scholarly production with the promise of continued professional development. Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities: Workload is 12 credits per semester. In addition, all department members share student advising and committee assignments. All faculty members are expected to be active in their fields.
The English department at Southern is dynamic, with 31 full-time members (including six recent hires), a brand new majors curriculum (including concentrations in literature, secondary ed, professional writing, and creative writing), and ongoing dialogues about how best to meet our commitment to student learning. The successful candidate must be able to teach both postcolonial literature and British literature 1900-present, as well as graduate courses in the field for our MA, MS, and MFA students. Teaching assignments will also include first-year composition, general education literature, and introductions to the English major.
Required Qualifications: PhD in English by time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who speak to their experience teaching reading and writing to the wide range of students at a regional comprehensive university or similar institution.

Has anyone who interviewed received a rejection? Or are we all being kept in the "just in case" pile? I haven't heard...
N.b. In the timeline described to me by the search committee, they did not anticipate scheduling campus interviews for a week or two after MLA, for several good reasons. This person says it was scheduled the very day after MLA... are they sure they don't mean a Skype (preliminary) interview, because they couldn't make it to MLA? Or some similar misunderstanding?
Mmm...I doubt it, though it's an optimistic thought. My guess is they called the 2 people they were interested in right away. Search committees often overstate the time they will take to make decisions, simply because they believe it gives them a buffer zone. [So, for example, if their top choice agrees to a visit, then gets snapped up by Princeton before coming and bows out, they can go to #3 without that candidate knowing s/he wasn't a first choice. Or so they imagine. Of course, it invariably happens that #3 has seen the wiki, is friends with at least 1 of the chosen candidates, and has a friend in the Princeton dept. who has filled him/her in on developments...So it's not exactly an effective method.] But I do wonder whether anyone other than the candidate who posted a visit has heard? Strange that SC chair would respond to the first poster's thank you note on the day visits were scheduled without any indication of what the status was.

Well, has anyone heard/found out anything? I'm thinking either visits are happening/have happened with no notice to other candidates, or this job is in funding trouble. (N.b. This is complete speculation on my part, but it's just plain weird that they would tell no one their schedule, then be incommunicado this long. And this is notoriously a dept. that doesn't do so well with the administration.) If anyone has or knows of a campus visit, please do tell!

- None that I've heard. Do we even know if they'll interview at MLA? Have they, historically?
- A: It would be highly unusual for U. of Toronto to do MLA interviews. Historically, they (and most other Candian schools) don't do MLA, and that practice seems to be holding this year. They are running numerous other searches in other fields, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are just running more slowly on some of them. Those U of Toronto searches that have scheduled interviews so far this year (in Medieval, Ethnic American, and Victorian) appear to be doing video interviews or going straight to campus [12/09].
- Just one Skype interview noted so far... Does anyone know if this committee is still in the process of selecting candidates for interviews?
- They have chosen everyone they want to interview and the interviews will happen next week.
- Actually they DO historically interview at the MLA. I've been there twice with them. Have also interviewed with McGill at the MLA. Not sure what they're up to this year; assume that the skype interview replaces the MLA.
- This should be interesting to watch. Friend is a TT up in Canada (square in the field) and not selected for interview. I guess UToronto is always pretty interesting to watch (for those of us who find this interesting - bless us).
