The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies at American University of Sharjah invites applications for faculty positions in classical or medieval Arabic literature at the rank of assistant or associate professor to begin in Fall 2020, subject to budgetary approval.  A PhD in Arabic studies is required, with a specialization in a genre or era of classical or medieval Arabic literature. The willingness and ability to teach entry-level Arabic heritage classes is essential. 

Successful applicants will have native or near-native proficiency in Arabic and English. The language of instruction at AUS is English, however, candidates able to teach courses in both Arabic and English are preferred.  A strong scholarly record/potential and relevant teaching experience are expected.

starting on Apr 1st, 2022.

The successful candidate (m/f/o) will be expected to represent the entire field of Arabic Studies in research and teaching. He/she will have expertise in the general area of Classical Arabic with a focus on one or more of its following dimensions: Arabic linguistics, Arabic philology or Arabic cultural history. Expertise in the field of Semitic Studies is desireable. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at undergraduate and graduate level in the Bachelor and Master programs Arabistik (Arabic Studies) and to organizationally supervise the Oriental numismatic collection (Orientalisches Münzkabinett Jena). Course language is German. Furthermore, he/she must have a proven track record concerning the successful application for external research funding, a scientific visibility at a national and international level, leadership competencies, and the capacity to contribute to both the development of interdisciplinary research projects within the Faculty of Arts and to collaborate in teaching and research projects within the university network Halle-Jena-Leipzig.

Applicants must hold a PhD and habilitation in Arabic, Semitic or Islamic Studies or equivalent academic merits as well as pedagogical qualifications through prior teaching experience. In case of a candidate’s first professorial appointment, the appointment is intended to be initially on the W2 level and limited to six years; the transition to a W3 professorship without renewed job announcement is envisaged on the basis of a positive tenure evaluation, at the latest after six years.

The Role

The Department of Ancient History in the Faculty of Arts is seeking a Lecturer with a strong research and teaching record in the area of Egyptology. The appointee will be expected to develop, teach and convene units in ancient Egyptian language in the hieroglyphic script at all levels (from beginners to advanced) and in Egyptology at all levels and will be required to contribute to other interdisciplinary undergraduate and/or postgraduate units offered in the Department. You will actively seek funding for, and contribute to, the research activities of the Department of Ancient History (including interdisciplinary research as appropriate) and make an active contribution to the administration of the Department, Faculty and University. 

About You

You will be a highly motivated academic with a PhD in a relevant field of Egyptology and a strong research track record. You will have experience teaching and convening units in ancient Egyptian language and Egyptology and using technologies associated with blended learning to ensure students are successfully learning at a tertiary level. You will be able to supervise higher degree research students, and to collaboratively contribute to the ongoing success of the Department of Ancient History and the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University.

The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies welcomes applications for the position of Associate Professor in History of the Middle East. Applications from candidates with a specialisation in History of the Ancient Middle East up to and including the early Medieval period will be particularly welcome. An ability to teach an ancient Near Eastern language will be desirable. Applicants may have one or more regional specialisations including (but not limited to) any of the following: Egypt, the Mediterranean World, Mesopotamia.

Applicants must hold a PhD and have a strong research profile appropriate to their career stage.  The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate an ability to address wider thematic debates and to teach survey courses to undergraduates, as well as offer more advanced research led modules in their area of specialisation. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop modules for post graduate students and to contribute to teaching of an MPhil and a Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies.

The candidate will develop new modules as well as contribute to modules in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies and in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies. The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for an appointment as Assistant Professor (tenure-track) of Arabic Studies. Strong candidates will have research interests centered on expressions of contemporary social and political phenomena in the Arab World, including but not limited to migration and refugee issues, statelessness and conceptions of nationhood, treatment of minority groups, fundamentalism, liberalism, modes of social activism, and the like. They will also be skilled at translating these interests into engaging courses that meet student interest in the current political moment and related cultural production, while expanding their understanding of the diversity and plurality of the contemporary Middle East. The successful candidate will actively participate in all aspects of the Arabic Program at UMD, which consists of a major and a minor and hosts a federally-funded Arabic Flagship Program that draws a diverse student body from majors across the campus. The teaching load is four courses a year (a 2-2 load). In addition to a dynamic research agenda, a passion for teaching Arabic as a second language at all levels is essential. Candidates who can contribute to the intellectual life of the School and the University through interdisciplinary collaborations are particularly desired for this position.

Housed equally in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of French and Italian, the position will focus on modern Arabic and Francophone literatures, preferably in North Africa. Background



The Arabic Research Fellow will contribute to the creation of knowledge relating to Islamic poetics by undertaking a specified range of  activities, including in particular translation of classical Arabic works of literary theory and criticism into English, as part of the contribution to the ERC funded project ‘Global Literary Theory: Caucasus Literatures Compared (GlobalLIT)’. The postholder will work from their home country, yet will have the benefits of a UK position, including library access and optional pension contributions. Proficiency in translating from classical Arabic will be determined by a timed test. Although this is intended as a full-time position for a single person, part time applications and/or splitting the position between two individuals will be considered.



Summary of Role

  • Translation into English of classic texts of Arabic poetics and literary theory
  • Assist with compilation of anthology comprising primary sources of literary theory and poetics in the literatures of the Islamic world translated into English
  • Coordinate with project team and assist with Arabic-related issues in Persian and Turkic texts being translated
  • Gather Arabic texts and manuscripts that will enrich the anthology and related project outputs

Person Specification

  • PhD in Translation Studies, Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, or Comparative Literature
  • Extensive knowledge of Arabic literary theory and poetics (‘ilm al-balagha)
  • Expertise in translating texts from classical Arabic
  • Fluency in English and familiarity with Anglophone rhetorical norms and knowledge of Anglophone poetics
